business news a russian company makes a major breakthrough suma capital ish a job to build a huge oil terminal and for more two minutes twenty minutes. walk away seven pm thursday afternoon here in moscow my name's kevin owen you're watching r.t. on the top story the breaking news from libya where government officials say colonel gadhafi has been killed the news comes from the city of sirte which is reportedly being overrun by government forces today these are the latest pictures we got through from there you can see people celebrating officials first and said that gadhafi had been taken alive with serious injuries to both his legs the latest we're hearing from national transitional council is that the colonel has died from his room full of gadhafi sons has reportedly also been killed and today he m.t.c.
11:02 am
is said the fall of sirte would spell the liberation of libya after nine months of civil war well it's early days but let's try and get some analysis on that from the london based on the right of his chris nine am chris very good evening chief thanks for being on from london there but if the colonel has indeed been killed and we still need to verify that would that be a logical conclusion i ask to nine months of civil war in the country. well it's not just a civil war we're talking about the logical conclusion of a massive nato intervention which wasn't supposed to be about regime change but clearly was about regime change from the start illegally as it happened so in a certain sense yes this is the logical outcome of what is basically a colonial operation to remove the government. in an african country by european and. by european powers and the u.s. to questions it want to hear we saw the u.s. secretary of state visit earlier on
11:03 am
a couple of days ago saying that they wanted him captured or killed or wanted to seal his fate then maybe if he hadn't been killed we're still trying to get the evidence that he has been but if he were ever to have been taken alive and appeared in court what sort of implications could that have had what sort of a trial would have. well i don't think you've got particularly for a trial. in any case but i mean nevertheless the what is basically i guess a kind of summary execution of what may well have been a summary execution is a kind of fairly barbaric came to what i believe was a very barbaric operation from the start and as a site you know this was not this was never supposed to be about regime change this knights of operation but that's that's really what's been the outcome of it and i mean you know i think the celebration on the ground of the kind of triumphalism that will no doubt going to hear from the western powers is. premature because this is. a transitional government that is essentially handpicked in washington in paris
11:04 am
and in london and it's not it's the outcome of the democratic aspirations of the libyan people so you know i feel this is very much. you know the sort of colonial operations that are being orchestrated for and from the european capitals and from washington if these pictures where you are talking of your shoulder showing them really graphic pictures of purported to be colonel gadhafi if it is true if he is dead was it always on the cards this would happen. well of course it was always on the cards because the way the operation from the european for the western part of this operation has really. been framed is a regime change operation so clearly you know when they capture him they're going to. the chances are they're going to kill him. but you know it was it was supposed to be a humanitarian operation if you remember it was supposed to be about protecting
11:05 am
civilians and saving civilian lives but actually the night of bombing must have killed thousands of innocent libyans and i don't believe the outcome is going to be one of. you know peace some progress some fortunately because just like the kind of interventions in iraq and in afghanistan the truth is i think it will turn out to be that you can't impose democracy you can't impose progress. by bombing the country and by manipulating the outcome from abroad but we're going to have with the nato side of it no i guess if he has been killed the last battle on the face of it is over now in. their lives will move all no. well i mean you know that's should be the case but i guess it probably won't be the case because i think they'll find ways of continuing to. have. if it's
11:06 am
advisors or security forces of some sort on the ground then they'll continue to have very very close relations with the government because essentially the government has. been chosen by the nato allies many of the people at the top of the at the top levels of the. the. people who. had actually relations with the west and with america and with the western powers and many of them of course were in the. or in the gadhafi cabin anyway so i don't think this bodes well and on either. in either case for a transition to sort of democracy and freedom in progress for the libyan people that's the problem chris not a lot of a study we're activists thank you for being on the program much appreciated. well moamar gaddafi ruled libya for nearly forty two years before he was ousted in august artie's peter all of a takes a look back at the role of one of the world's most controversial leaders. hunted

billions of dollars of business being conducted between libya and the global community world leaders going out of their way to make sure that they were seen to be working with kids after shining five star hotels and presidential palaces he stayed in the traditional bedouin tent flanked by a security detail of glamorous female agents his face bearing the marks of repeated cosmetic surgery partially hidden behind sunglasses at all times the beginning of the end came in february political unrest swept along on the wave of popular revolt in egypt reached libya the response from the libyan leader was brutal the u.n. passed a resolution to allow air strikes on libya as rebels backed up with military aid from foreign governments closed in on his last safe haven eight months after the first protests and despite claims from gadhafi that he would fight on and when one of the most colorful and controversial figures in modern history was removed from power peter all of a party. greece remains paralyzed with
11:09 am
a two general strike as thousands of greeks continue to protest across the country against new budget cuts parliament's to vote on another round of intensely improper austerity measures needed to secure a continued payment from international bailout fund it's going to go to athens now talking to a first but. more violence has broken out again on the streets of athens what is the situation like in the greek capital now. very chaotic scenes unfortunately that we saw breaking out following clashes not just between the riot police and the protesters but originally between the protesters themselves the separate groups at the beginning started fighting amongst each other you had a greta van a kitty came in and the people who were protesting in the front of the parliament building wanted to keep things peaceful and so recently that's where the violence started a riot police of the woods moving in and again we still more that tear gas being used in the central square and off the side streets as well it really is extremely
11:10 am
chaotic indeed you've got things burning everywhere bits of wood burning stove things being train left right and center and a number of injuries sustained today as well we were watching it just from a balcony a little while ago and we could literally see greeks and people fighting amongst each other and people being dragged all think it and beaten by groups of about twenty of the other protesters so it was extremely disconcerting to see with that chaotic scene these two again rocks being thrown at people who are completely unprotected so a local media here reporting that unfortunately one man has died following a heart attack in hospital where he was taken when he sustained injuries in the protest and we've heard unconfirmed sources at the moment saying around fifty people have been injured you see lots of the ambulances game back and forth trying to make their way through the protesters there on syntagma square and the protesters still remain there at the moment as the parliament votes on this next round of the state's measures that they need to push. three to obtain the next

tranche of money from the eurozone lenders i mean i don't know if it's an obvious question to ask you a kind of know what the answer is going to be but what is the feeling on the streets there about this eurozone leaders gathering in brussels on the weekend you know what are they saying very think the chances are going to be that this. crisis is going to bring any positive result from those talks. but i can tell you the a full well meaning feeling on the streets from the people is one of absolute fury people has said again and again when we seen these protests about this growing public anger reaching a breaking point it really is and it's something that affects so many people here in the country you really can't convey that enough when you down there amongst the protesters these are schoolchildren that teaches their parents garbage collectors louise you good judges it's every single person in the country turning out and
11:12 am
they've told us it's because absolutely everyone's been affected by these measures they really have reached the limit they don't feel that the e.u. is saying leaders that they government anymore is working in their interests to tell it you know they do make a fair argument because we've seen a lot of these measures tried to be put in place they haven't had the required results and so the people really have reached the limit and the people that we've spoken to here in the country the economists the analysts say the you know the eurozone leaders in the government here really seem to have lost sight of the focus of the whole euro same project and it's the idea of. more and more to be looking like leaders who've lost their way and so we're seeing again this public anger bubbling a fire with the protests on the streets today and i surf earthlings have a solution for you so they will be crossing back to regularly throughout the course of the evening for more. functional northern kosovo nato peacekeepers are least to some ethnic serbs today pushing them away from the disputed border crossing the
11:13 am
serbs have barricaded the area claiming it belongs to them as they still don't consider kosovo an independent country. is there with the latest for you. we are now at the scene of the tensions of this standoff between the soldiers ok for the nato led peacekeeping force here in kosovo and the cost to insert civilians the soldiers have come here earlier in the morning as you can see on army to be called the riot police three of them behind this very case all as you can see looking frightening in full riot gear to try to remove the barricades that ethnic serbs erected here three months ago but the ethnic serbs living here in kosovo have gathered here to prevent the peacekeepers from doing that from taking the barricades away as they say nato as well as k. four here in the region known as pay peacekeepers but they are exceeding their mandate the u.n. security council resolution number twelve forty four the only legal reason for them
11:14 am
to be here but they're right now rather it's just in pristina in all its institutions over the course of a over. the territory that the ethnic serbs see as their heartland as an independent state they don't recognize course of his two thousand and eight self proclaimed independence and don't recognize the authorities and laws and institutions from time to time the peacekeepers are using loudspeakers address into the crowd and calling on that to disperse and threatening otherwise the force would be used and from time to time they are using these words which is happening gas pepper spray this is something like tear gas it has the same impact on human being as the tear gas has but serbs are not ready to surrender as they say they are protecting themselves with masks using special liquid to wash their eyes and they say they will be here until the very and as long as it is needed to protect
11:15 am
their rise from time to time the leaders of the serbs here are dressed same crowd calling on. to remain calm and peaceful as much as possible but as you can see the situation may look staple but this is very dramatic this is an absolutely no win situation and tensions are very high and it's boiling. all the time last month when he came forward try to remove the barricades by force they used tear gas against protesters and rubber bullets even at least seven civilians have been injured and this time as well fears are growing that it could be violent and they could be blood and victims from both sides. of some reaction of the serbian carol belgrade talk to serbian canadian film director producer barroso morris hi thanks for being on the program you've made films about the west role of the balkans you know that
11:16 am
area extremely well how do you assess what mates of currently doing in northern kosovo. well for as acting as as force to further nato's goals in the province of kosovo and this is something that is just a continuation of their policies for the last ten years the serbs who remain in kosovo are are there living in horrible conditions basically living in a ghetto and they have been there and their presence there is a form of silent protest against what is happening there as they do not want to leave their homeland they want to stay with as they were they are and stay in the country in which they were born and which they believe is theirs what is happening right now is. something that is very extraordinary and the serbs there are saying no to the west and their attempts to. further their goals they are there in peaceful protest protesting against what nato has and planned has planned for
11:17 am
kosovo and if this was happening in a country where nato and the west supports the regime of that country they will be hailing the serbs as freedom fighters in fighters for human rights of course because the west does support the government in pristina after all they install them there they are criminalizing away the serbs and demonizing them once again and presenting them as criminals and people who want to make a profit out of all this while the west is in fact those who want to make a profit out of imposing you know customs over there boris i guess the counter-argument the worry is without any peacekeepers the serbs in the course of us will go for each other's throat surely will they. well first of all to make such an assessment is a very linear approach and we have to go much deeper than that but i don't want to go too much into the causes of the kosovo war. the serbs and albanians there have lived together for decades and for even centuries the west has aided one group in
11:18 am
the separatist word that was fought during the one nine hundred ninety s. and that group has prevailed and at this point they have no intention of being a balanced. force in this whole conflict as they and by they i mean the west obviously supports only one side so if they want to be peace keepers then they should act like peacekeepers and be neutral and balanced of course kiefer is not doing that and they are supporting their own interest of course which would go in sync with the cost of all being interests thus the big picture let's focus bucket on this kind of news event now these blockades of the causing the problems where is it going to go the peace talks how is this going to go will those blockades be removed by any saw it was going to. well i think the serbs have no intention of giving up because they're fighting as i've said before for their existence if they give up now then they've lost everything and i would like to see some more support . you know at least from from the government of serbia who the government is
11:19 am
basically saying that they're just hoping that somebody will come from the sign and fix the problem i personally believe that the government. everybody who is in the government should go down there and sit down with the serbs in their province and show support the way not just sit in belgrade and basically just talk so i would like to see some more support by the government serbia to show i would like to see a show of support by the people of serbia who can go there and support their fellow citizens i think the west there were at this point is unwilling to try to find a compromising solution they just want to you know further their interests at any cost and if they're not met with no resistance then i'm afraid they will succeed but i want to get on an optimistic that to the solution is to be found in the peaceful resolution that people have to show their disagreement with what's going on and if the people here are united they will. have you know the human rights that they deserve the big picture do you ever see see if they will ever accept the
11:20 am
independence of kosovo. i think i think the serbs as a nation will never accept courses and penance there are some people within the serbian people who accept this as a reality and and accept it as something that has to be done unfortunately people like that do tend to have a lot of influence simply because they're very easily supported by the west but i think the average serbian citizen will never accept kosovo's independence because not only because of historical interest but because this is been done in a way that has. been contrary to international law has been contrary to any moral code that was trying to promote. so i think the serbs there in kosovo and serbs. who claim because who is a part of serbia are simply promoting european values i mean true european values not the ones that the european union is trying to force upon certain people so i think you know fighting for human rights in kosovo and fighting for international
11:21 am
law when it comes to kosovo is very is a very real western value and i hope that the west is fully realized that the people of the western world and world altogether will realize just what situation the serbs are and how much they need the help of decent people to achieve their rights ok takes a bit of the program live from belgrade their serbian canadian film director producer boris mitigator scheme. is on the ground in kosovo so we're just now updating us with the latest on air as well as online just about just well then you can head to our twitter page the latest from wherever you are if you're not buying a t.v. you know scale the latest videos to on our you tube channel. the first ever launch of a russian rocket from a western platform has been temporarily perspired because of technical difficulties carrying a european satellite navigation system called galileo the rockets no shuttle to set off from space from french guiana on friday the study bushell reports.
