as they turn a new page in the country's history the interim government says gadhafi was taken alive in the city of sirte only to die later from wounds inflicted during his capture well let's cross live now to the libyan capital and get the latest from. we've seen the images of people celebrating across the country and the interim government is expected to announce the symbolic liberation of libya later today but it's set to happen in the city of benghazi not in the capital but what's the reason for this. well just a couple of days ago there were shootouts here and clashes between the troops and the loyalists and i think it's fair to say that security situation in tripoli is far from untended if you will it's still very chaotic in a sense but at the same time very relaxed unexpected in terms of the n.t. see as to exactly why they decided to be a part of that reason of course would be it's very clear is because it was course the first original stronghold of the rebel forces but also because it's very wary
4:02 pm
a situation here no one knows what could happen if that official ceremony of liberation was held in the capital with that said the mood here is quite celebrate story lots of people honking their horns hazard lights on it's very different from what we saw when mubarak was ousted in terms of singing songs down the street a lot of people walking around plainclothes people with semiautomatic an automatic weapon sitting into the air so the situation is very tense very few people here are thinking about a question that global analysts are asking which of course is what's next for libya a lot of fears that the country could break out in some kind of tribal war that there is going to be a real push and a power struggle here for people to get into power it's no secret that the country enjoys vast vast oil wealth and this is something that's all going to begin to unfold in the next couple of days but right now the people of tripoli and most of the country are not thinking about that they're thinking and celebrating the fact that gadhafi is finally got. at least. the u.n.
4:03 pm
wants an investigation now into the circumstances of colonel gadhafi is death why the questioning didn't the libyan interim government say he died from his wounds after he was captured in the city of sirte. they do say that there are so many conflicting reports as to how moammar gadhafi was actually killed very different variations of video brutal video which went viral certainly on the internet i lot of the mainstream media selling those images the world watching some people of course and all others just horrified to see this man despite the fact that many people knew that he was kept completely lost you know just being is very much hated by most of the people here a lot of people horrified by some of those images western officials certainly praising the situation very happy about gadhafi being gone but we're hearing concern from the u.n. certainly that an investigation you speak wants into that and also that backed by russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov who had this to say about the fact that
4:04 pm
there needs to be help some kind of investigation into the way gadhafi was killed and also about when this nato no fly zone is going to end. with. the footage shown on t.v. proves that he was captured alive and wounded and after that he was killed later there were reports that a convoy carrying the colonel was attacked by nato planes and after that the rebels captured members of that convoy has been repeated numerous times that nato planes are only have a u.n. mandate to ensure a no fly zone over libya and the convoy wasn't posing any threat to civilians on the ground and couldn't be a legitimate target so nato actions pose a number of questions as well alliance members also stressed that when they began the campaign in libya the goal was to protect civilians i'm not to get rid of gadhafi but now they're saying different things saying they've achieved their goal in libya although the u.n. security council never set out with such goals. now we're hearing that the u.n.
4:05 pm
security council is looking into and will be reviewing trying to cope another resolution as to when to officially and that no find so for now this mission officially still on but there you go some of that celebratory shooting that i was talking about taking place here in tripoli as people celebrate the death of moammar gadhafi and i mentioned earlier the world watched those very graphic videos where it's the mainstream media most certainly took advantage of basically twenty four hours of these videos people from around the world watching parties ivor bennett analyzes what that all means and the shady circumstances surrounding moammar gadhafi. this frenzied mob is about as far as it gets from a trial at the hague. but the death of gadhafi is now being cheated around the world yes we came we saw mark and he died there. even by those who

champion democratic justice. people in libya today have an even greater chance of to this news of building themselves a strong and democratic future i'm proud of the role that britain has played in helping them to bring that about and i pay tribute to the bravery of the libyans who've helped to liberate the country we will help them we will work with them a long way from cameron's insistence that gadhafi be put on trial and to see fighters were even dissuaded from the shoot to kill policy agreeing in august they'll take him alive i don't think he did go up to trial. in any case but i mean nevertheless the war is basically i guess a kind of summary execution of what may well have been a summary execution is a kind of fairly barbaric and two i believe was a very barbaric operation from the start and as a side you know this was not this was never supposed to be about regime change this night of operation by. that's that's really what's been the outcome of it the
4:07 pm
backslapping has been fuelled by this gruesome footage of gadaffi his body splashed across headlines pleaded for the world and the people power is not going to be put back here in libya thanks to the u.s. and its nato allies this video shows gadhafi was still alive when captured it clearly didn't last long some suggest an execution and question why this is now being applauded he was assassinated third after he was caught one that this is a very handy else crime against one that man and the other public will see it such i've talked to people who dislike raftery this like the way he was killed they think that this tells you something about the moral of the so-called revolutionaries this view is also shared by many on twitter there are several posts here already concerned about the coverage questioning the need for such graphic images and why daphne's death dictator or not has been reported with such jubilation the images have been labeled her ific this tweet says the b.b.c.
4:08 pm
wouldn't have used the images for anyone else and other suggestions are having a competition sally bercow a prominent activist in the u.k. says she sees where the same wasn't done for bin ladin back then a bomber refused to release the images saying it could incite more violence or be used as propaganda but for gadhafi the vultures were too quick for bennett r.t. london. one of colonel gadhafi sons would trust him was also captured alive in sirte only to be declared dead shortly after libya's interim government claims he also died of his wounds but the video you're seeing are clearly shows the little tyson gadhafi casually smoking a cigarette as he leans against a wall then shortly afterwards he seemed to trade sprawled out on the floor completely lifeless let's get some more analysis now from u.s. based journalist and author susan lindauer joining us live in washington so is this a great development for libya now that he's gone what's the country will we see in
4:09 pm
the future. i do not believe this war is over the libyan people are not going to stop fighting until nato leaves the country and i find it questionable that nato will do that france is already demanding thirty five percent of libya's gross national gross oil production and i suspect that the people of libya will be furious and outraged that they are paying france for having bombed the infrastructure having destroyed the schools the hospitals the the water supply having the electrical grid there's tremendous damage in the country and i i do not think that this is over at all what about those libyans are saying they couldn't have had a regime change the end of gadhafi with no help well i think that's a very small number of people you're talking about benghazi you're talking about
4:10 pm
islamic radicals who have been suppressed by gadhafi not without reason qaddafi for all of his faults as of as of with forty years of rule had one of the best track records on women's rights and the salafi lists as they are called oppose those progressive reforms they want islam to be true to the old shariah and they their goal which has been very clearly stated and the west needs to accept it because they have been emphatic about their position it is their intention to instate shariah and that is what they're going to do will the libyan people accept shariah that is a very big question do people give up their freedom and easily but i don't think the so recently view you have you didn't sorry to interrupt recently been to see you were saying we want a future with moderate islam within the government which is very different what
4:11 pm
you'll saying is not. when the n t c is divided there's a lot of infighting the radicals who are on the ground the soldiers the foot the foot soldiers who have been fighting they are fighting for islam and they are they have hated khadafi because he pursued a moderate and socialist islam and the people that you are talking about are from the old kadafi regime who are being fully into the revolution in other words if they would have banned and qaddafi then they would be accepted in the new government but that does not mean that their policies will be accepted it remains to be seen who's going to come out on top do you know i don't think it i don't think the west is going to get what they want do you know then have any options or optimism over the promise that in the future of the near future there will be elections after all the m.t.c.
4:12 pm
is an interim government it's a transitional government and we will see democratic stall elections in libya in the near future you don't believe that will happen. well i heard two different stories i heard that they would have elections in two years and then i heard that they would have elections in eight months. i am very suspicious about it i'll believe it when i see it because i don't think the transitional council will win i think that they will be pushed out and i think that. i do i do not have confidence in this government at all i think they're going to they're going to do everything they can to protect their own power and if it turns out that the libyan people are against nato which they are then the nato governments will push to delay elections because they will know they are going to lose certain facts or time susan and journalist north speakers live from the u.s. capitol well for more on the developments in libya we cannot cross live to the

director of the transform center for conflict analysis. is in berlin thanks very much indeed for joining us now the un wants an investigation into the circumstances of death is death what will not achieve what does it really matter now. i don't think investigation. should be an investigation for sure but getting to the reality. is this. is actually something that was will become almost unanimously by the so-called international community i don't see what kind of oh when the u.n. . force or push in you see an investigation of course if an investigation has to go. through. just the best of. it is bound to reveal so many things that i think a lot of people because we would want to be so i needed any investigation.

of the fighting over well that of course leads us to the mission for nato suggestions that particular from the earlier that the operation there is now complete implying that nato will indeed leave libya but bearing in mind its mission was in its initially to protect civilians and you're talking about the possible future violence and conflict that may arise surely that's a reason for nato to stay in libya. my understanding is that we have to remember that no significant ground forces in libya so. leaving is not really the issue as far as movement on the ground is. my understanding is the problem in that mission of nato would be transformed. the libyan army would have to be somehow configured up to be
