4:00 pm
it's the birthplace of the arab spring and now it's a new prepares for a new day as thousands has to the polls to vote but because a lot of parties slated to win and shari'a law springing forward in egypt and libya the democracy in the middle east backfired on u.s. interests well a live report. and it's a system down wiki leaks no longer leaking i'm still further notice this as money for the site goes down the drain so who are walk is behind the silencing and what's next for the whistleblower website i haven't seen it and what. they call a person one on one and it's always a few of them you know three four five and one person is this police patrol and this police will tell you. but it's not only taking place in new york city occupy wall street protesters in chicago are now the newest victims through theory and police crackdowns so as the movement continues to spread a lot of brave soldiers standing up to cops with his brutal honesty. here's
4:01 pm
a human people are entitled to. but it's a right that many here in the united states don't have instead thousands are in line and a waiting line for free health care so lots of rich get richer we'll show you the faces of poverty living in one of the world the wealthiest nations. it's monday october twenty fourth four pm in washington d.c. i'm liz wall and you're watching our team. the polls have closed and some news just first free election it's the first test for emerging democracies in the arab world in tunisia and are exercising their new rights and estimated ninety percent turned up to the polls to cast their vote the election will decide the over two hundred representatives that will draft a new constitution. and she was who will lead the north african country so what
4:02 pm
does this historical of that mean for the future of tunisia and will democratic practices acco throughout the rest of the arab world meanwhile in libya a revolution and its earlier stages is underway after the death of longtime libyan leader moammar gadhafi now the leader says islamic sharia law will form the foundation of legislation in the budding government this fear is that in and tolerant islamic resurgence will take hold of the country for more on this joining me now is r.t. correspondent and he's now live is on the ground in tripoli and he's a thank you for joining us. so the interim leader there in libya just announce that the basis for legislation for the new government will be based on sure real law this is sparking fear of an intolerant islamic regime regime coming forward also fears that women rights will go be violated what is the reaction you're seeing there to this announcement. that's right these so-called
4:03 pm
liberation ceremonies haven't quite come to an end where you can hear the fireworks behind the mix of gunshots also people still celebrating and already this announcement from most obviously who are now it's a real war would be the way that libya goes if it follows the power he sees for and of course this plays into fears that we've been hearing from analysts way before moammar gadhafi was killed the country would take a hardline islamist direction and this announcement of course just ensures that that's most likely the way the country will go if most of the members of that and so you see do go ahead and get elected in these elections that were being promised over the next eight months or so in eight months i should say and yes there are fears here but this is going to become a very different country that it is essentially going to become and this one this state. and then what about in terms of another concern is women's rights.
4:04 pm
there are some conflicting interests there with sharia law and women's rights what is the reaction you're seeing it so that. well really lived. during the draft was a relatively liberal country in terms of women's rights women's rights here they have a choice of whether or not where there's so unready today my producer on the ground said to me you might want to put something on your head today people might be looking at you differently than just on friday and of course he was joking but that is really a sense of some of the fears here on the ground but things are going to become a long different in terms of women's rights the way women are treated here and that's going to be very different from the way it was all because he was still in power now and he said i want to shift our attention to tunisia. where they just underground there was their first free election and. from what you know of the process there did it go smoothly or were there any irregularities
4:05 pm
reported. there were some minor irregularities reported we do know that voter turnout was very high although we're hearing that ninety percent of those i was able to vote came out to vote i just want to point out though that according to my sources and these are only fifty percent of the population is in fact eligible to vote so that's something that might perhaps be debated in the coming weeks and months as this country moves forward in its so-called democracy really their very long lines at the polls some of them were mixed gender some of them separate and not really highlights some of the issues that people are starting to focus on there is where it looks like the main party is going to get most of those in the parliament and not something that people are worried about and in terms of irregularities you were asking me it was in fact party although like i said minor
4:06 pm
small group of about fifty people or so did down there to protest saying that the irregularities that did occur or with the i'm not a party which is the leading islamist party there and this election a huge milestone for its needs and the middle east. at least symbolically what for the rest of the arab world learn from tunisia especially where you are in libya. well it depends on and this is where the whole arab spring started so much focus was put on from the usual last december really is as the great country that went forward and tried to rouse been a league would been in power for for too many decades most people thought and so really it's very easy for libya they were very much put on a pedestal but in a way their revolution i think it's fair to say has been hijacked because so much focus then moved on to egypt and then on to libya and i've been to all three countries and it have to be said that they all have very different atmospheres if
4:07 pm
you will it's all about something else the one thing they do have in common and if anything from these this will be less of a problem my father's actually from news and i spent summers there and really it was a very liberal north country probably the most liberal so the islamist problem is much less of something that they're going to be worried about as opposed to here in libya we've already spoken about the supposal of syria law and even more so in egypt where the muslim brotherhood is expected to get thirty percent of the parliamentary vote in in november so they do share very common things like when egypt and libya learned from tunisia it's hard to say because the countries are very different and of course egypt there's relations with israel libya there's oil misa doesn't have very much supply tourism in the united states knows that in fact they didn't even back up candidate that's not the case here in libya where obviously they're backing the national transition committee and it's not the case in egypt were most certainly will hear some kind of official backing of one of the
4:08 pm
parties and he said thank you so much for keeping us updated there that was our key correspondent and he's anally with the latest from tripoli. and from the middle east uprisings in the united states occupy wall street protests are going strong since they sparked over one month ago and new york protesters remain camp down on wall street where they believe is the scene of financial crimes that have gone unpunished crimes that they say led to economic depression an increase in the quality economic inequality in the nation over the weekend protests got messy in chicago for a police crackdown on demonstrations and arrested over one hundred thirty protesters there it's a second round of mass protests in the city last week one hundred seventy five protesters were arrested but one police officer is taking a stand against police brutality let's take the lessons of sergeant shane marsh who criticize police for turning on peaceful protesters. in the and
4:09 pm
he didn't mention the name. the you are to correspond a marine corps and i am take a closer look at a police officer that some are calling a hero biting against the military as a share of the police force. five. six weeks into the occupy movement nearly one thousand on our activists have been arrested in new york city. thrown to the ground beaten netted like flies and pepper sprayed. the n.y.c.
4:10 pm
these tactics have been harshly criticized yet the most profound and public condemnation recently came from you must marine sergeant shamar thomas was defending demonstrators in times square. tonight. the lone man that stood up to dozens of new york cops comes from a family of honor my step father he was a he would have been a stand in the two thousand and six years so it wasn't even that long ago me and my mother were actually in iraq the same time sergeant thomas completed two tours in iraq before returning to his homeland where he now aligns himself with the activists he says are being targeted by aggressive authority in uniform have
4:11 pm
a scene and. take on a person one on one it's always a few of them you know three four five in a one person these are you know protests as is this police brutality this is police will tell you hands down twenty five year old morgan says it's come to a point where iraqi activists are treated with more respect and humility then their american counterparts he recalls an incident when hundreds of iraqis violent with u.s. soldiers a few people started throwing rocks and everybody kind of started the rocks and we actually had a marine hit in the face he was on the back of a truck but at the head you know the people were free to go you know what i mean we didn't arrest anybody we didn't. go beat up on anybody so to see the police officers doing this to run on civilians in our own country was just it was you know stuff but i was amazed like i was in shock this coming from a man who's taken part in fifty combat missions in iraq. where u.s.
4:12 pm
war that's raged for nine years finally ends december thirty first we asked this marine if all the struggle and sacrifice was worth it not at all why because what would what is the result would have we gotten out of this size you know a lot of different political agenda you know it's a political war machine it's not really a woman for the people the people united states can't even. peacefully protest so how are we going over to defend the rights of the people when you know it's been proven you know to you know the various media outlets that we can you know protest peacefully visiting the protesters he stood proudly to defend sergeant thomas perceives something of a hero's welcome in zuccotti park to see yes you know the blessing is really you know we can have gestures of appreciation towards the green that completed combat in baghdad but just began his battle against police brutality here at home because the govt you know people are fresh you know that be courteous and they're taking
4:13 pm
advantage of the bad you know honor that you know has bestowed him by the american people to protect them sergeant thomas is public lashing of the n.y.p.d. has from what we inspired the birth of a new world of the primaries it calls on us veterans of all military branches to join me as i was speaking through time and with roughly forty thousand soldiers coming out from iraq by the years and this international grassroots movement may grow even might be going up on our party we are. president obama today is kicking off a week of fund raising and he's having to hollywood to raise some cash for more and buffett jay leno obama is. being into deep pockets he slated to attend a fund raiser at the home of actors antonio banderas and melanie griffith take it to his head to gallop five thousand to nearly thirty six thousand dollars meanwhile the president has yet to show its base and address the occupy wall street movement
4:14 pm
sweeping across the country a movement that he has said he supports but clearly the president would rather schmooze with these celebs as the political system skewed toward the wealthy and speaking of inequality let's take a look at some scary news and yours lose your job today seventy percent chance you won't find a job in the next month and it's a lot worse if you've been unemployed longer if you're unemployed for a year there's a ninety one percent chance that you won't find a job in the next month and only forty seven percent of the workforce is fully employed at the moment that's when you at up do you will. the long term unemployed and the those that aren't fully employed and two million people have exhausted ninety nine weeks of unemployment benefits and another four million will also do so in two thousand and eleven joining me now for more on this is david the grow author and journalist of the dot is dot com thank you for joining us david
4:15 pm
president obama has said that you support the occupy wall street protest and you understand their plight why won't he take the time to talk to them instead he's having to hollywood. ok looks like we're having a little bit of technical difficulty but we are going to talk to our ramon the lindo he is he is taking us to los angeles our theater mungo in those shows of the magnitude of the health care problem in los angeles where those desperate for health care line up for treatments that they cannot afford. but it says two and shame on america a united states of america at sixty three rose brown has vision problems and her
4:16 pm
fair share of aches and pains but look really hurt she says it's thinking about her country is headed that out it was the people bad the people for the people. that we changed down that brown was recently laid off and now waits along with five thousand other people to see a doctor at a free medical clinic in los angeles it's a lie which seems to never end this morning thousands of people lined up early in hopes of receiving free medical care this is just a fraction of the tens of millions of americans who still have no sort of medical coverage nationwide more than sixteen percent of the population does not have health insurance this free clinic attempts to fill the void in america's broken health care system i think looking at this you can see the something horribly wrong with our health care system thousands of medical volunteers provide everything from
4:17 pm
dental fillings to mammograms doctor tongue song has gone cheered in some of the poorest countries in the world but now sees the desperate need here at home sending that's. if i don't have to go abroad to do some of the work here also need help affordable health care has been one of the demands of occupy wall street so our educational systems are dealt with and access to health care and food and shelter are actually available to every citizen we have no intention of stopping back at the free clinic it's not just the most impoverished who are lining up for how many year habit of banks agrees and jobs but aren't offered insurance at work or can't afford the deductible health care is a human right. people are entitled to be able know that their if something happens . they're not going to go bankrupt johnny chung has an english degree and works as
4:18 pm
a data entry clerk she claims wall street corruption and excessive military spending we're taking we're taking money away from people that need it like everyone that's in line over here both families can't wait for health care reform chris is a cook at a family owned restaurant which does not offer health insurance he has dealt with pain for years even though you know blood or when he has few options to get expert attention people can afford things you know i mean i want to be around for my son and my little girl was on the way so i want to be around the. world despite being the world's richest nation nearly forty thousand americans die yearly because they lack health insurance and can't get care rules brown told the nation's elites see these long lines and take notice do you really care those people their nose places we the smaller people are paying your immunities
4:19 pm
whether or not those in power here brown is hopeful and i am so happy to see that the masses are taking it to the streets. in los angeles. r.t. . and back for more i have david think raw data thanks for joining us. president president obama has said he supports the occupy wall street protests he says he understands their play but he won't take the time to talk to them and said he's kicking off his campaign as there is a campaign fund raisers in hollywood. why is it. going against all straight. well bombers are all about talk of rhetoric you know he really cared about helping the ninety nine percent of americans he would have been
4:20 pm
acting the past three years you know putting tim geitner in charge of the treasury footing larry summers the head economic advisor supporting the reconfirmation or ben bernanke they can bill daley his chief of staff or the daley of course were junky morgan all of these things he's he's essentially been a bank's their puppet to put it broadly you know either also of no action exactions or wall street at the expense of hardworking americans and you know that is what they are protesting across the nation is this growing and equality do you think our political system is skewed to favor the miles thanks. oh i obviously the statistics speak for themselves you know you have a u.s. millionaire outworld now forty six trillion dollars and well breaking it down even further was there one percent of the u.s. relations makes over a million dollars per year so we have
4:21 pm
a very small fraction elation that has just run away with man so well it's happened over the past thirty years you know we've had and so i are generation of massive wealth creation that ninety nine percent of america had seen because bill that it's already there and right now because of this we have the highest work with beer and he called it well we've ever had in the nation's history and you know this is why people are out on wall street and even the clip you just showed with the medical care you know sixty percent of personal bankruptcies bill because of medical care and seventy five percent of those bankruptcy different people who actually have health care insurance so on top of the bit million americans who don't have any health care insurance will cost of health care road so much that when we're down to liberty park protest think there are many people down there who have been to college due to medical bills that's probably the number one issue down there right now and you know david an expert i understand recently found that wall street is
4:22 pm
washington washington is wall street that the corporate elites and infiltrated the system and now they're using it to their advantage at the expense of everyone else to what extent do you agree with that. oh absolutely there's a system a political bribery in this country campaign finance rotting in the revolving door between washington and wall street the global financial interests the so-called to the failed bank board control of not only the u.s. government but of many governments throughout the world and you know through these campaign finance lobbying method they can still completely dominate you know little process and. well we've seen such a concentration of wealth that's why we're bailing out banks that committed trillions of dollars of fortune activity about in this mess begin with i mean the system has been corrupted rigged against ninety nine percent. and growing
4:23 pm
inequality as we just saw in that story there is affecting health care with an estimated one in five in the stand of california without health insurance you expect a problem to get worse well there's no signs of it getting better right now so you know again you know the health care bill that was passed by the obama administration and congress was essentially a bailout of the insurance industry and once again this is another bailout or really you know business roundtable companies like at cigna you know well well point all these big health insurance companies were basically bailed out health insurance policy so you know we have politicians who were more concerned with the american public and that are the people who are going to campaign we would have a much different health care. and we all know it and that's why we're going out on the streets where we're demanding that action is taken and the absolute the real government is going to defend us we realize now we have to defend ourselves and
4:24 pm
that's what's happening throughout this movement and well we've identified some of the problems david what can be done about all this rising inequality we're seeing these problems infiltrating the political system what is the solution and what can be done. well there's a lot of things that need to be done but i think getting down to the root problem and what you know i. thought relations when you break up the too big to fail banks you know there was a remember. that failed to make it through the senate you know last year. glass steagall legislation which will be reenacted i mean these are all just for steps and obviously you know getting running. a. bribery campaign finance robbing and. all these things need to be addressed and you know once those are there are many things about that. ultimately breaking up getting
4:25 pm
money out of politics this is what we need right now in my opinion. david the occupy wall street protest now it's been going on for over a month. there is some fear that you know that it's going to remain stagnant these people may want to see some real change what else can they do to make their their message loud and clear. and actually take action to lead to change i mean do they need to take it a step further or what can be done to move this along. well you know i don't know the exact answer but you know right now i would say you know people watching this if you haven't taken for a local station you know go down there everyone has a skill that they're good at something that they're passionate that they can contribute to this movement we've got the moment you know it's up to people who haven't come out yet. and you know to be centralized movement is really
4:26 pm
a roots movement so where that it's going to go we don't know but the more people keep taking action to keep pushing the issue you know it puts the politicians on and the third warning about people things they're going to worry about the people on the street people there are people coming to their homes so that's what we have to do we have to keep the pressure you know we're going to build what you know where all those. remain they were thank you so much for your thoughts on all of this that was david de graw author and journalist and dot com. and coming up all new well we'll continue our coverage of the many different protests taking this country by storm activist and author david swanson have been living in washington d.c. it's freedom plaza since the beginning of the october two thousand and eleven and occupy d.c. protest join us to discuss the latest developments coming out of the nation's capital plus we'll have some insight on the end
