i've seen it and want to. take on a person one or more and it's always a few of them you know three four five in one person is this police brutality this is police. but it's not only taking place in new york city occupy wall street protesters in chicago are the new was victims to experience police crackdowns so as the movement continues to spread one brave marine standing up to cops with brutal honesty. here's a. futile are entitled to. but it's a great many here in the united states don't have instead thousands are waiting in line for free health care so the rich get richer we'll show you the faces of poverty living in one of the world's wealthiest nations. and it's the birthplace of the arab spring and now it's unusual prepares for a new day as thousands head to the polls to vote and what the islamic parties slated to win and shari'a law are springing forward in egypt and libya the

democracy in the middle east backfire on u.s. interests. it's monday october twenty fourth seven pm in washington d.c. i'm liz of all and you're watching our team. president obama today is kicking off a week of fund raising and he's heading to hollywood to raise some cash for more than buffett to jay leno obama is tapping into deep pockets of the answer taman world is slated to attend a fundraiser at the home of actors and so many of them that us and melanie griffith tickets to attend the gal all five thousand it's nearly thirty six thousand dollars meanwhile the president has yet to show his face that the occupy wall street movement sweeping across the country a movement like he has said he supports but clearly the president would rather she rusal with these celebs as political in. the political system skewed toward the
7:02 pm
wealthy joining me now for more from our studio and our legates community organizer ron go child ron thanks for joining us president obama has to have a he supports the occupy wall street movement and understands our plight so why what do you think the time to talk to them and said he's having having over to hollywood. right because the thing in hollywood who find the one percent and that's the group who really supports him and that's the group who he really represents not the ninety nine percent of the rest of the working class so it doesn't surprise that broke obama comes back to los angeles today not to announce you know jobs not to announce the immigration reform that he promised this not so known as these things he simply gets a phone raise here to reelect himself or when we're just president not to represent the working class but the represent the class that is if you go visit today and that's the one percent ok and speaking of inequality let's take a look at some new pretty scary figures lose their job today and there's a seventy percent chance you won't find
7:03 pm
a job and next month if you're in it it's worse if you've been on an unemployed longer for a year that is a ninety one a per cent chance that you won't find a job in the next month only forty seven percent of the workforce is fully employed two million people have exhausted ninety nine weeks of employment benefits and another four million will do so in two thousand and eleven what are your what's your reaction to those scary statistics. i mean those that this are very scary and for people of color we understand that they're even worse so with that understanding i think what we have to identify is what is the root cause of this problem of a system that allows people to be extremely rich like the ones that will be having dinner tonight with the president obama and at the same time allows a place like the united states have so many homeless people and that you know if we have to name it it's called capitalism that's the rule system that creates the conditions that will allow some people to be extremely rich in so many people or the great majority of people to be working class or to be poor so these statistics
7:04 pm
should not be frightening to anyone was even a basic understanding of economics because what we see is that the capitalist system is crumbling as we speak and i think that's why this country in this world is looking for alternatives and the united states is occupy wall street movement is one of those manifestations and i think that for us in los angeles you know we have a long history of struggle here and for us we know that capitalism is the primary enemy of humanity and if we don't get rid of capitalism then these these situations or these conditions of ninety nine percent versus the one percent will continue and that somehow we cannot agree with and that's why we don't want to become ten percent of the twenty percent and we want to live in a society that doesn't have rich middle class and poor people that is the true solution to all of these problems you know the united states was once considered one of the most a gallon tarion places in the barrel but what is happening now where we're seeing this is growing any quality. well i don't know that i would agree that the united
7:05 pm
states is a get it terry and i think if we had to go native americans african americans i don't know if they would agree with that but i think what's happening in the world today is that the peoples of the world are upraising and they're taking back their resources they're having political and social movements that are because they are becoming the appendant they are becoming self-determined and because of that the they are taking the resources back and that of course will inevitably have an impact on the u.s. standard of living so it should be no surprise that places the today like india brazil and iran even you know their standard of living is going up and at the same something in the united states we're seeing poverty that hasn't seen in eighty years so i think that the current paradigm in the world power of power dynamics is rapidly changing and that's why i think we see today in the united states so many people confuse about what's happening because they are now realizing that the system that has given them the highest standard of living in the world is simply not sustainable and that's why so many people today are seeing
7:06 pm
a drastic change in their life their living conditions and are on what can be done in your opinion turn this around. i think that you know people in the united states you know if they're a little more objective can see around the world and see other places and other other systems that are being or other movements that are achieving things they can win as well for example where you know what sort of education and health care where things are than they were you know the resources of a country are going to social programs to help the people instead of the billionaires like we see here in this country you know there's a recession or even a depression in this country at this moment but you know the richest of the rich are not feeling it it's simply the majority of people who are the working class so i think that where these for me it's clear if we look across the world and look at places that are really developing a socialist program in their governments they are having success i mean if you look at what's happening as well and i mean look at what's happening in china china's
7:07 pm
growing tremendously and i'm not trying to say that in these systems are perfect but i think there's a lot that this country and the world can learn and what's happening specifically in south american bolivia in a swathe in other places around thank you so much for weighing and i guess that was community organizer ron go with cash. so out of the prez president obama winds and dined with the one percent the ninety nine percent are still going strong occupy wall street protesters in new york remain camped out on wall street where they believe is the scene of financial crimes that have gone on punished crimes that they say has led to economic depression and increased economic inequality in the nation over the weekend protest out nothing in chicago where police cracked down on demonstrations and arrested over one hundred thirty protesters there the second round of mass protests in the city last week one hundred seventy five protesters were arrested but one marine is taking a stand against police brutality let's take
7:08 pm
a listen to sergeant should march home and criticize police for turning on the protesters. the and the image. the image. now or at the correspondent we're going to pour in i have paid a closer look at the sergeant some are calling a hero fighting against the military evasion of the police force. just six weeks into the occupy movement nearly one thousand on the activists have been arrested in new york city. thrown to the ground beaten and that is mike wise
7:09 pm
and pepper spray. the n.y.p.d. sackets have it harshly criticized yet the most profound and public condemnation recently came from the u.s. marine sergeant shamar thomas while defending demonstrators in times square. tonight. the lone man that stood up to dozens of new york cops comes from a family of honor my step father he was he would have been a stand in two thousand and six. so wasn't even that long ago me my mother were actually in iraq the same time sergeant thomas completed two tours in iraq before returning to his homeland working now lines in south with the activists he senses
7:10 pm
are being targeted by aggressive authority. have a scene and watch t.v. . take on a person one on one it's always a few of them you know three four five of them or one person these are you know protests as much as this police brutality this is police were tell you hands down twenty five year old morgan says it's come to a point where iraqi activists are treated with more respect and humility then their american counterparts he recalls an incident when hundreds of iraqis got violent with u.s. soldiers a few people started throwing rocks and everybody kind of started the rocks and we actually had a marine hit in the face he was on back of a truck but at that ad you know people were free to go you know and i mean we didn't arrest anybody we didn't. go beat up on anybody so to see the police officers doing a stuff on our civilians in our own country was just it was you know stuff like i was amazed like i was in shock this coming from
7:11 pm
a man who's taken part in fifty combat missions in iraq. where u.s. war that's reached for nine years finally ends december thirty first we asked this marine if all the struggle and sacrifice was worth it not at all why because what would what is the result would have gotten out of. you know a lot of different political agenda you know it's a political war machine it's not really a woman for the people the people united states can't even. peacefully protest so how are we going over there to defend the rights of the people when you know it's been proven you know through you know the various media outlets that we can you know protest peacefully visiting the protesters he stood proudly to defend sergeant thomas received something of a hero's welcome in zuccotti park so yes blessing really you know we can have gestures of appreciation towards the marine that completed combat in baghdad but
7:12 pm
just became his battle against police brutality here at home because the go to you know people present was a be courteous and they're taking advantage of the bad you know honor that you know has bestowed on him by the american people to protect them sergeant thomas's public lashing of the end like he has for one week inspired the birth of a new group called occupy marine it calls on us that are all military friends to join anti-war street protests and with roughly forty thousand soldiers coming back from iraq by the years and this international grassroots movement may grow even my idea of what i am artsy here. and growing inequality is affecting all aspects of people's lives there seems to be a rising trend of people losing access to health care and the need. health care reform has been one of the many issues raised during the occupy wall street demonstrations nation why are these are among the lindo houses the magnitude of the health care problem and los angeles where those desperate for health care line up
7:13 pm
are treatments i can't afford this is what it says on to and shame on america the united states of america at sixty three ruth brown has vision problems and her fair share of aches and pains but what really hurts she says is thinking about with her country is headed i thought it was the people by the people for the people. that we changed down that brown was recently laid off and now waits along with five thousand other people to see a doctor at a free medical clinic in los angeles it's a lie which seems to never end this morning thousands of people lined up early in hopes of receiving free medical care this is just a fraction of the tens of millions of americans who still have no sort of medical coverage nationwide more than sixteen percent of the population does not have
7:14 pm
health insurance this free clinic attempts to fill the void in america's broken health care system looking at this you can see that the something morally wrong with our health care system thousands of medical volunteers provide everything from dental fillings to mammograms doctor tongue has gone today in some of the poorest countries in the world but now sees the desperate need here at home. same thing that's. if i don't have a coal brought to tucson to work here also we help affordable health care has been one of the demands of occupy wall street so our educational systems are dealt with and access to health care and food and shelter are actually be able to every citizen we have no intention of stopping back at the free clinic it's not just the most impoverished who are lining up for how many year have advanced degrees and jobs but are offered insurance at work or can't afford the health care is
7:15 pm
a human right people are entitled to be able know that their if something happens to them that they're not going go bankrupt joining chung has an english degree and works as a data entry clerk she brings law street corruption and excessive military spending we're taking we're taking money away from people that need it like everyone that's in line over here most families can't wait for health care reform chris is a cook at a family owned restaurant which does not offer health insurance he has dealt with pain for years even coughing up blood for him but he has few options to get expert attention people can afford things you know i mean i want to be around for my son and my little girl was on the way so i won't be around. anywhere else despite being the world's richest nation nearly forty five thousand americans die
7:16 pm
yearly because they lack health insurance and can't get you to care ruth brown hopes a nation's elites see these long lines and take notice to two you really care those people there nose high places that we like the smaller people of pay and no immunity whether or not those in power here brown is hopeful and i am so happy to see that the masses taking it to the streets. in los angeles ramon bill and archie. and i earlier i talked to david to go author and journalist and status dot com i asked him about the income gap in america and why the ranch just keep getting richer the statistics speak for themselves you know you have us millionaire household now that's forty six trillion dollars well breaking it down even further want chancellor one percent of the u.s.
7:17 pm
relations makes over a million dollars per year so we have a very poor fraction relation as there's a runaway with massive wealth that's happened over the past thirty five years you know we've had an entire generation of massive row creation that ninety nine percent of america has seen because all that it's always been right now because of this we have the highest growth of beard in quality wealth we've ever had in the nation's history and you know this is why people are out on wall street and even the clip you just showed with the medical care you know sixty percent of personal bankruptcies are because of medical care and seventy five percent of those bankruptcies are people who actually have an inch or so on top of the million americans who don't have any health care insurers the cost of health care slowed so much that when we're down to liberty for protesting there are many people down there who have been in poverty due to medical bills that's probably the number one
7:18 pm
issue down there right now i mean the system has been corrupted rigged against ninety nine percent. and growing inequality as we just saw in that story there is affecting health care with an estimated one in five in the state of california i went out health insurance do you expect the problem to get worse. well there is no side to the getting better right now though so you know again you know the health care bill it was well you ministration and congress was essentially a bailout of the health insurance industry is once again this is another bailout really you know business roundtable companies like at cigna you know well well following all these big health insurance companies will basically bailed out insurance policy so you know we have politicians who are more concerned with the american public instead of the people who are going to campaign we would have
7:19 pm
a much better health care system and we all know it and that's why we're going out on the street from where we're demanding that action are speaking in the absence of a government is going to defend us we realize now we. think we're out of this group we've identified some of the problems david what can be done about office rising inequality we're seeing these problems infiltrating the political system what is the solution and what can be done. well there's a lot of things that need to be but i think getting down to the root problem and what unites ninety nine percent of the population when you break up the too big to fail banks you know there was a whole remember. that failed to make it through the senate you know last year. last year the legislation that should be reenacted i mean the role just for steps and obviously you know getting. a. lot of campaign
7:20 pm
finance lobbying. all these things need to be addressed and you know once those are there are many things that happen or ultimately breaking up getting money out of it when you're right in my opinion that was a david de graw author and journalist but the amp sound is calm and the polls have closed and to me just first free election it's the first test for emerging democracies in the arab world and sneezes are actor sizing their rights and that's about it ninety percent turn up to the polls to cast their vote the election will decide over two hundred representatives that will drop a new constitution and who will choose who will lead the north african country so what of this historical in the event mean for the future of tunisia and while democratic practices echo throughout the rest of the arab world meanwhile in libya a revolution and its earlier stages is under why after the death of longtime libyan
7:21 pm
leader moammar gadhafi now the interim leader there as islamic sharia law will form the foundation of legislation and the budding government this sparking fears that an intolerant islamic resurgence will take hold of the country for more on this earlier i spoke to r.t. correspondent and this that now we who is on the ground in tripoli. the so-called liberation ceremonies haven't quite come to an end for you can hear the fireworks behind the guns are people still celebrating and already this announcement from the . deal who announced real law would be the way that libya goes if it falls apart. and of course this plays into fears that we've been hearing from an aloof way before moammar gadhafi was killed that the country would take a hardline islamist direction and this announcement of force just in stores that that's most likely the way the country is go if most of the members of that and you see go ahead and get
7:22 pm
a life fit in these elections that were being promised over the next eight months or so in eight months and yes there are fears here that this is going to become a very different country that it is essentially going to become an islamist state. and and then what about in terms of another concern is women's rights. there are some conflicting interests there with shari'a law and women's rights what is the reaction you're seeing it so that. will really libya during that was it was a relatively liberal country in terms of women's rights women's drive here they have a choice of whether or not where there's so and already today my producer on the ground said to me you might want to put something on your head today people might be looking differently than just on friday and of course he was joking but that is really a sense of some of the fears here on the ground but things are going to become a lot different in terms of women's rights the way women are treated here and
7:23 pm
that's going to be very different from the way it was was because he was still in power now a nice i want to ship our attention to tunisia. where they just under land there with their first free election and. from what you know of the process there did it go smoothly or where there are any irregularities reported. there were some minor irregularities reported we do know that voter turnout was very high although we're hearing that ninety percent of those as i was able to vote came out to vote i just want to point out that according to my sources in news only fifty percent of the population is in fact eligible to vote so that's something that might perhaps be debated in the coming weeks and months as this country moves forward in its so-called democracy really there are very long lines at the polls some of them were mixed gendered some of them separate and not really highlights
7:24 pm
some of the issues that people are starting to focus on there is with it looks like the main islamic party is going to get most of those seats in the parliament and that's something that people are worried about and in terms of irregularities you were asking me it was in fact repair party although like i said mine are a small group of about fifty people or so did john there's a protest saying that the irregularities that did occur were with the another party which is the leading islamist party there and this election a huge milestone for its needs and the middle east. at least symbolically look for the rest of the arab world learn from tunisia especially where you are in libya. well it depends on you because where the whole arab spring started so much focus was put on tunisia loft with amber really of the brave heart to be about that went forward and tried to out going to leeward been in power for for too many decades of
7:25 pm
people thought for really a pretty good plan for libya they were very much put on the pedals still but in a way their revolution i think it's fair to say it's been hijacked. that was our it's a correspondent a niece and now we with the latest from tripoli and while those incendiary i get the opportunity to vote and protesters in the united states get the opportunity to express their anger as they continue to grow louder and stronger the world's biggest little glowing web site is having its pretty down taken away and is going silent wiki leaks founder julian assange says the organization of boulder frayne from spilling secrets and selling various enough cash to continue operating resources for wiki leaks were spread then after several banks public log on them after they released hundreds of thousands of u.s. state department cables now wiki leaks says they are going on an aggressive a fund raising campaign to keep the organization afloat earlier i spoke to author
7:26 pm
and activist david swanson here's what he wants to say i certainly hope not but you're under greater threat i think from the u.s. justice system but. of course there was abroad but they deserve our support and our gratitude with out their information we wouldn't know half of the things we're protesting in these occupations without the information that apparently bradley manning leaked to wiki leaks there would have been much less pressure on me within the iraqi government to say no to a continued occupation of troops with legal immunity we owed them as much gratitude as we go principled activist movements and i hope people will put some money into it and you know why are these financial companies they're playing the plug on wiki leaks but some say they're not legally obligated and they're not legally obligated to in fact julian aside just calling it an lawful financial blockade. whether it's on lawful or extra legal it's immoral it's discreet spittle it's it's

corporations with power they should not have with monopolies they shouldn't possess acting at the behest of a government that they shouldn't be listening to just as they have done in actions that are clearly illegal including sharing of information and spying on our own people without warrants and so forth this is this is the problem in this country is the power of corporations and this complicity between them and a government that is operating against the public will and you know some people have accused wiki leaks as being a terrorist organization for putting national security at stake others have touted wiki leaks for encouraging transparency for holding governments for holding corporations and counts of all and now with this with the organization at risk of extinction what do you think that has to say about the freedom of the press and the
7:28 pm
attacks of organizations and whistleblowers such as wiki leaks well we have an assault on whistleblowers that mr bradley manning among others we have record prosecutions of whistleblowers under the obama administration we have we have rather a joke of freedom of the press to begin with with monopolies of the mega international media corporations in this country but the assaults on weekly leaks for exposing information for which there is no evidence that they have caused any danger to our national security well the government routinely week's classified information in support of its own efforts is hypocritical and discreet small and dangerous and i think increasingly the american public recognizes the hypocrisy here and that was on fire and activists they have it swanson well that does it for now for more on the stories we covered that are the flash usa and check out our you tube page at
