8:00 pm
it's the birthplace of the arab spring and now it's a new user prepares for a new day as thousands had to the polls to vote but what the islamic parties slated to wear and sharia law poleward in egypt and libya because democracy in the middle east backfire on u.s. interests are the scene that you. take on a person who want to war and it's always a few of them you know three four probably one person is this police brutality this is police were here. but it's not only taking place in new york city occupy wall street protesters in chicago are now the newest victims to experience police crackdowns so as the movement continues to spread one brave marine standing up to cops with his brutal honesty. healthcare is a human right people are entitled to do but it's a right now here in the united states don't have instead thousands are waiting in line for free health care so as the rich get richer we'll show you the faces of
8:01 pm
poverty living in one of the world's wealthiest nations. and it's a system that is down to wiki leaks no longer leaking until further notice this as money for the site goes down the drain so who or what is behind silencing and what's next for the whistleblower website. it's monday october twenty fourth eight pm in washington d.c. i'm liz gall and you're watching our team. the polls have closed and tunisia's first free election it's the first task for emerging democracies in the arab world and tunisia as are exercising their rights and that's made it ninety percent turn to the polls to cast their vote the election will decide the over two hundred representatives that will draw out the new constitution and choosing who will lead
8:02 pm
the north african country so what does this historical of that mean for the future of tunisia and will democratic practices acco throughout the rest of the arab world meanwhile in libya a revolution and its earlier stages is underway after the death of longtime libyan leader moammar gadhafi now the interim leader. says islamic sharia law will form the foundation of legislation in the budding government this marking fears that an intolerant islam is resurgence will take hold of the country for more on this earlier he spoke to artsy correspondent a nice and now he is on the ground in tripoli. these so-called liberation ceremonies haven't quite come for an answer you can hear the fireworks. people still celebrating and already this announcement from obviously deal who announced such real law would be the way that libya goes if it falls apart before and of course this plays into fears that we've been hearing from analysts where you go for
8:03 pm
moammar gadhafi was killed because you would take a hard line islamist direction and this announcement of force just ensures that that's most likely the way the country is go if most of the members of that and you see do go ahead and get elected in these is elections that were being promised over the next month or so in eight months i should say and yes there are fears here that this is going to become a very different country that it is essentially going to become and it's won this state. and and then what about in terms of another concern is women's rights. there are some conflicting interests there with shari'a law and women's rights and what is the reaction you're seeing it that. well really libya during that daffy was a relatively liberal country in terms of women's rights women's rights here they have a choice of whether or not wear headscarves or so and already today my producer on
8:04 pm
the ground said to me you might want to put something on your head today people might be looking at you differently than just on friday and of course she was joking but that is really a sense of some of the fears here on the ground that the things are going to become a lot different in terms of women's rights the way women are treated here and that's going to be very different from the way it was while gadhafi was still in power now and he said i wanted to shift our attention to tunisia. where they just underwent there with their first free election and. from what you know of the process there didn't go smoothly or were there any irregularities reported. there were some minor irregularities reported we do know that voter turnout was very high although we're hearing that ninety percent of those eligible to vote came out to vote i just want to point out that according to my sources and only fifty percent of the population is in fact eligible to vote so that's something that might perhaps be easier baited in the coming weeks and months
8:05 pm
with this country moving forward in its so-called democracy really their very long lines at the polls some of them were mixed gendered some of them separate and not really highlights some of the issues that people are starting to focus on there is with it looks like the main islamist party is going to get most of those seats in the parliament and that's something that people are worried about and in terms of irregularities you were asking me it was in fact with party although like i said minor a small group of about fifty people or so did gather to protest saying that the irregularities that are car were with another party which is the leading islamist party there and this election is a huge milestone for tunisia and the middle east at least symbolically look for the rest of the arab world learn from tunisia especially where you are in libya.
8:06 pm
well it depends i mean this is where the whole arab spring that started so much focus was put on from the usual last december really as as the brave country that went forward and tried to roust been a leader had been in power for for too many decades as people saw it and so really it's for egypt and for libya they were very much but on a pedal still but in a way their revolution i think it's fair to say has been hijacked because so much focus then moved on to egypt and then on to libya and i've been to all three countries and it has to be said that they all have very different atmospheres if you will it's all about something else a long thing they do have in common and if anything tunisia this will be less of a problem my father's actually from news and i spent summers there and really it was a very liberal north african country probably the most liberal so the islamist problem is much less something that they're going to be worried about as opposed to here in libya we've already spoken about the proposal of syria last and even more so in
8:07 pm
egypt where the muslim brotherhood is expected to get some thirty percent of the parliamentary vote in in november so they do share very common things what could egypt and libya learn from tunisia it's hard to say because the countries are very different and of course egypt there's relations with israel libya there's oil sneezer doesn't have very much of the sides to resume in the united states knows that in fact they didn't even back a candidate that's not the case here in libya where obviously they're backing the national transition committee and it's not the case is this where most certainly we'll hear some kind of official backing of one of the parties and these are thank you so much for keeping us updated there that was our view correspondent and he's anally with the latest from tripoli. and from the middle east uprisings in the united states occupy wall street protesters are going strong since they sparked over one month ago a new york protesters remain cans out on wall street where they believe is the scene of financial crimes that have gone unpunished crimes that they say at let's
8:08 pm
economic depression increase economic inequality in the nation over the weekend protests got messy and chicago works this crackdown on demonstrations and arrested over one hundred thirty protesters there it's the second round of mass protests arrests in the city last week one hundred seventy five protesters were arrested but wondering is taking a stand against these brutality let's take a listen to sergeant shamar thomas who criticize police for turning peace for turning on cities all protestors.
8:09 pm
her her and. in new york city i'm. thrown to the ground beaten many like flies and pepper spray . the n.y.p.d. says tactics have it harshly criticize it yet the most profound and public condemnation recently came from the us marine sergeant shamar thomas was offending demonstrators in times square.
8:10 pm
tonight. the lone man that stood up to dozens of new york cops comes from a family of honor my step father he was he would have again i stand in two thousand and six. was anyone i want to go me and my mother were actually in iraq the same time sergeant thomas completed two tours in iraq before returning to his homeland where he now aligns himself with the activists he sense are being targeted by aggressive authority in uniform have a scene and watch t.v. . take on a person one on one it's always a few of them you know three four five and i'm a one person yes these aren't you know protests is my size is this police brutality this is hands down the twenty five year old war vet says it's come to a point where iraqi activists are treated with more respect and humility then there are american counterparts he recalls an incident when hundreds of iraqis that
8:11 pm
violent and u.s. soldiers a few people started throwing rocks and everybody kind of started the rocks and we actually had a marine hit in the face he was on back of a truck but after a day you know the people were free to go you know what i mean we didn't arrest anybody we didn't go beat up on anybody so to see the police officers doing stuff on all civilians in our own country was just it was you know. well i was amazed like i was in shock this coming from a man who's taken part in fifty combat missions in iraq. where u.s. war that's reached for nine years finally ends december thirty first we asked this marine if all the struggle and sacrifice was worth it not at all why because what would what is the result would have gotten out of this size you know a lot of different political agenda you know it's a political war machine is not really a woman for the people the people united states can't even. peacefully protest so how are we going over there to defend the rights of the people when you know it's
8:12 pm
been proven you know to you know the various media outlets that we can't you know protest peacefully visiting the protesters he stood proudly to defend sergeant thomas received something of a hero's welcome in zuccotti park so yes you know god was a really you know we can for gestures of appreciation towards the marine that completed combat in baghdad but just began his battle against police brutality here at home the concept of over you know people fresh knows it be courteous and they're taking advantage of the badge and the honor that you know has bestowed them by the american people to protect them sergeant thomas is a public lashing of the end like he has for what we inspired the birth of a new group called off the pipe dream it calls on u.s. interests of all military friends to join the anti-war street protests and with roughly forty thousand soldiers coming back from iraq by the years and its international grassroots movement may grow even mightier arena when i am artsy we
8:13 pm
are. and growing inequality is affecting all aspects of people's lives there seems to be a rising trend of people losing access to health care and the need for health care reform has been one of the many issues raised during the occupy wall street demonstrations nationwide artie's ramon glendower shows us the magnitude of the health care problem in los angeles where those desperate for health care i know are treatments they can't afford. this is what it's done to and shame on a mare the united states of america at sixty three ruth brown has bigger problems than her fair share of aches and pains but what really hurts she says is thinking about where her country is headed i thought it was the people bad the people for the people. that we change down bad brown was recently laid off and now waits along with five thousand other people to see a doctor at
8:14 pm
a free medical clinic in los angeles it's a lie which seems to never end this morning thousands of people lined up extra early in hopes of receiving free medical care this is just a fraction of the tens of millions of americans who still have no sort of medical coverage nationwide more than sixteen percent of the population does not have health insurance this free clinic attempts to fill the void in america's broken health care system like looking at this you can see that there's something horribly wrong with our health care system thousands of medical volunteers provide everything from dental fillings to mammograms doctor tongue chong has volunteered in some of the poorest countries in the world but now sees the desperate need here at home. same thing that's. if i don't have to go across to do some. work but he also you know affordable health care has been one of the demands of
8:15 pm
occupy wall street so our educational systems are dealt with and access to health care and food and shelter are actually available to every citizen we have no intention of stopping back at the free clinic it's not just the most impoverished who are lining up for help many year have advanced degrees and jobs but aren't offered insurance at work or can't afford the health care is a human right people are entitled to be able know that their if something happens to them that they're not going to go bankrupt johnny chung has an english degree and works as a data entry clerk she blames wall street corruption and excessive military spending we're taking we're taking money away from people that need it like everyone that's in line over here most families can't wait for health care reform christiania is a cook at a family owned restaurant which does not offer health insurance he has dealt with
8:16 pm
pain for years even coughing up blood for him but he has few options to get expert attention people can afford things and i mean i want to be around for my son and my little goes on the way i want to belong. anywhere else despite being the world's richest nation nearly forty five thousand americans die yearly because they lack health insurance and can't get into care ruth brown hopes the nation's elites see these long lines and take notice to do you really care those people their nose high places that we make this mother people love pay and put him in a nice whether or not those in power here her brown is hopeful and i. i am so happy to see that. it's like taking it to the streets. in los angeles ramon lindo r.t.
8:17 pm
. and earlier i talked to david the rocker and journalist of amp status dot com i asked him about the income gap in america and might the ranch just keep on getting richer it's a six keep for themselves you know you had us millionaire households now have it so forty six trillion dollars in wealth breaking it down even further wants tenth of one percent of the u.s. . me smolder million dollars per year so we have a very small fraction of the illusion that has just run away with it well it's happened over the past thirty years you know we've had conspired generation of massive wealth creation that ninety nine percent of america hasn't seen because so it would get so caught up and right now because of this you know high is more superior any quality it well we've ever had no nation's history and you know this is why people are out on wall street and even the clip you just showed with the
8:18 pm
medical care you know sixty percent of personal bankruptcies are because of medical care and seventy five percent of those bankruptcies are people who actually have health care insurance so on top of the million americans who don't have any health care insurance the cost of health care is exploded so much that when we're down to liberty or protesting there are many people down there who have been a college student medical bills that's probably the number one issue down there right now i mean the system has been corrupted in us ninety nine percent of. and and growing inequality as we just saw in that story there is affecting health care more than half unaided one in five in the fate of california without health insurance you expect a problem think how north. well there's no sign of the getting better right now though so you know again you know the health care bill that was passed by the iraq ministration and congress was especially a bailout of the health insurance industry is once again this is another bailout
8:19 pm
for really you know business roundtable companies like cigna you know well well later all these big help insurance companies will basically bailed out health insurance so you know we had politicians who were more concerned with the americans instead of the people who are going to campaign we would have a much different health care system and we all know it and that's why we're coming down the street from where we're demanding that action is taken in the absence of the government is going to defend us we realize now we have. this move we've had to identify some of the problems david what can be done about this rising inequality we're seeing these problems infiltrating the political system what is the solution and what can be done. well there's a lot of things that need to be done but getting down through the rubble and what
8:20 pm
you know i ninety nine percent of the population when you break the two big bang you know there was a whole remember. that failed to make it through you know last year. last year the legislation that should be reenacted a new role just first steps but i'll be asleep you know getting. a. campaign finance law being. all these things need to be addressed and you know once those are there or they think. ultimately breaking up the banks getting money out this is what we need to move on right now in my opinion that was david de graw author and journalist of amps dot com. and what so many americans unemployed and struggling to survive and the ninety nine percent protesting nationwide the president winds and dined with that one percent today obama is kicking off
8:21 pm
a week of fund raising and he's heading to hollywood today to raise some cash from warren buffett to jay leno yvonne is tapping into the deep pockets of the answers payment world he's slated to attend a fundraiser at the home of actors antonio vendetta and melanie griffith tickets to attend a gala five thousand to nearly thirty six thousand dollars meanwhile the president has yet to show his face and address the occupy wall street movement sweeping across the country a movement that has said that he has said he supports but clearly the president would rather schmooze with the celebs and the political system skewed towards the wealthy for more only or i spoke with community organizer ron go child i asked him a simple question why is the president having to hollywood instead of taking the time to talk to protesters take a listen. because the thing in hollywood you find the one percent and that's the group who really supports him and that's the group who he really represents not the ninety nine percent of the rest of the working class so it doesn't surprise that
8:22 pm
obama comes back to los angeles today not to announce you know jobs not to announce the immigration reform that he promised this not to announce these things he simply had to fundraise here to reelect them so for four more years as president not to represent the working class but the represent the class that is in your visit today and that's the one percent ok and speaking of any quality let's take a look at some new pretty scary figures lose your job today there's a seventy percent chance that you won't find a job that next month if it's worse if you've been on him unemployed longer per year that is a ninety one percent chance that you won't find a job in the next month only forty seven percent of the workforce is fully employed two million people have exhausted ninety nine weeks of unemployment benefits and another four million will do this in two thousand and eleven what are your what's your reaction to those scary statistics. i mean those that this is are very scary
8:23 pm
and for people of color we understand that they're even worse so with that understanding i think we have to identify what is the root cause of this problem of a system that allows people to be extremely rich like the ones that will be having dinner tonight but president obama and at the same time allows a place like the united states have so many homeless people and that you know if we have to name it it's called capitalism that's the real system that creates the conditions that will allow some people to be extremely rich and so many people are the great majority of people to be working class or to be poor so these sophistic should not be frightening to anyone was even a basic understanding of economics because what we see is a bit of the capital system is crumbling as we speak and i think that's why this country in this world is looking for alternatives and the united states occupy wall street movement is one of those manifestations and i think that for us in los angeles you know we have a long history of struggle here and for us we know that capitalism is the primary enemy of humanity and if we don't get rid of capitalism then these these situations
8:24 pm
or these conditions of ninety nine percent versus the one percent will will continue and that's something that we cannot agree with and that's why we don't want to become the ten percent of the twenty percent that we want to live in a society that doesn't have rich middle class and poor people that is a true solution to all of these problems i think what's happening in the world today is that the peoples of the world are uprising and they're taking back their resources they're having political and social movements that are because they are becoming self dependent they are becoming self-determined and because of that the they are taking the resources back and that of course will inevitably have an impact on the u.s. standard of living so it should be no surprise that places like today like india brazil and iran even you know their standard of living is going up and at the same time here in the united states we're seeing poverty that hasn't seen in eighty years so i think with the current paradigm in the world power of power dynamics is rapidly changing and that's why i think we see today in the united states so many people confuse about what's happy. because they're now realizing that the system
8:25 pm
that has you know given them a higher standard of living in the world is simply not sustainable and that was community organizer ron go check. now while obama is in california fund raising with some of his goats a prominent donors the world's biggest whistle blowing web site has lost some of its funding force and despite the go silent at least for now with the leaks founder julian assange says the organization of over frane from spilling secrets and sell they raise enough cash to continue operating resources for wiki leaks were spread then after several banks pulled the plug on them after they released hundreds of thousands of u.s. state department cables now wiki leaks says there and barking on an aggressive campaign fund raising campaign to keep the organization afloat earlier both the author and activist david swanson i asked him whether this was the end of wiki leaks here's what he had to say i certainly hope not but they are under or greater
8:26 pm
threat i think from the u.s. justice system and allies and coerced allies abroad but they deserve our support and our gratitude without their information we would know half of the things we're protesting in these occupations without the information that apparently bradley manning released so we can believe there would have been much less pressure on me within the iraqi government to say no to a continued occupation of troops with legal immunity we owe them as much gratitude as we owe principled activist movements and i hope people will put some money into that and you know why are these financial companies they're pointed toward on wiki leaks but some say they're not legally obligated they're not legally obligated tailing back doing an aside just calling it an lawful financial blockade. whether it's on lawful or extra legal it's immoral it's disgraceful it's it's corporations with power that should not have with monopolies they shouldn't use
8:27 pm
this afternoon at the behest of a government that they shouldn't be listening to just as they have done in actions that are clearly illegal including sharing of information and spying on people without warrants and so forth this is the this is the problem in this country is the power of corporations and this complicity between them and a government that is operating against the public will and you know some people have accused wiki leaks of being a terrorist organization for putting national security at stake others have outed wiki leaks for encouraging transparency for holding governments for holding corporation accountable and now with this with the organization at risk of extinction what do you think that has to say about the freedom of the press that and the attack the organization did and whistleblowers such as the wiki leaks. well
8:28 pm
we have an assault on whistleblowers in mr bradley manning among others we have record prosecutions of whistleblowers under the obama administration we have we have rather a joke of freedom of the press to begin with with the monopolies of the mega international media corporations in this country but the assaults on wiki leaks for exposing information for which there is no evidence that they have caused any danger to our national security well the government routinely leaks classified information in support of its own efforts is hypocritical and discreet swollen dangerous and i think increasingly the american public recognizes the hypocrisy here. and that was author and activist david swanson well that does occur now for more on the stories we covered go to artsy dot com slash usa and check out our youtube page it's youtube dot com slash artsy america you can also follow me on
8:29 pm
