4:00 pm
the purpose of the american jobs act is simple. to put more people back to work simple solutions seem like a great idea but will mean work to tackle the big complex problems as politicians on all sides often mystically look toward the future of america's economy one of the real unemployment numbers out there will uncover the ugly truth u.s. lawmakers seem to be ignoring. you could call them the new oakland raiders police in riot gear tearing through the peaceful occupy wall street can occupy oakland camp ripping down their tents and arresting dozens we'll take you to the latest battlefield in the war between this country's police and its protesters. at the end of the losing lots of people here i'll go to the cup we told him polish up to sleep in the raid on the grounds usually. the occupy wall street protesters may not have five star accommodations
4:01 pm
but they sure do have five star food all thanks to this man the unemployed chef feeding the movement for free. and it's the sounds of liberation as millions celebrate in a post darfur libya but with infrastructure destroyed and thousands dead are the people forgetting about the road they took to get to this point and choosing to ignore the road ahead. good afternoon it is tuesday october twenty fifth four pm in washington d.c. i'm christine for you're watching our t.v. . starting off this afternoon at libya's interim rule an ounce today that gadhafi his body has been laid to rest at a secret location this so it doesn't become
4:02 pm
a shrine to his supporters meanwhile thousands from libya's new ruling class are devoting their time and energy to rejoicing instead of attending the present task of rebuilding their country so with routine water shortages thousands dead and the country's infrastructure largely destroyed are the people ignoring the price that's country paid for freedom argues a new so now he is on the ground in tripoli and has this report. of liberation of mild. looks like a state of euphoria here i mean everybody is happy here you know. even though there is no formal you know law and order but are they ignoring the price paid for freedom in libya from the thirty thousand civilians are said to have been killed four thousand still missing this house was one of needles and this is a single family lost five people including two children bringing the meaning of
4:03 pm
their cold joys to all government but no one saw as who is going to rebuild my house who will compensate on the school or so much of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed fighting longer is now a serious challenge in the capital. supplies and try to collect what we can. have a family with six kids we would have to leave to come here every day and get water is very difficult. bomb the electric station and then wally for ten days they haven't fixed the problem at least we can come here for now. but maybe not much longer. before the war there be a good boast one of the best living standards on the continent with high life expectancy and world title mortality rates but after months of heavy bombing and fierce fighting the country social and economic achievements have been brutally reversed its people now betting on
4:04 pm
a heavily armed and inexperienced group to govern them through a fresh start in the wake of destruction i only asked us not to reveal his face during my play for saying this. that if you talk or say anything positive about gadhafi you will have serious problems with the rebels there is no government in speaking of the end of human life he tells me if people were truly happy about the end of the daffy the way he was killed there would be millions if not thousands on the streets to get their free movies i'm sure some sixty to seventy percent of the country does not approve of the way gadhafi was killed we expected it to be tried as a prisoner of war not killed like and we are told in new libya there will be justice people to help this country and those not justice in the way he was killed i have no hope for the future but it's just the beginning don't you think that it could get better with time but things will take time to change in the country it's not the only agreement i think there will be
4:05 pm
a lot of fighting in the future right now is the mountains won or in this fighting going on between china and anyone with a weapon that's power who can do what they want. so many celebrate this new era libya's history people like army are quietly bracing for the worst. and he's now a r.c. . well some important questions here about the price of peace and if what we are seeing is actually peace so i want to go now to atlanta georgia where columnist and former reagan administration official paul craig roberts is standing by hey there paul i know you just wrote about this and raise several questions namely now that gadhafi has been murdered what is next for libya break this down for us and how you see the future there in washington. state. and of course the country is not united and this was. rationing.
4:06 pm
and there will be tremendous. in-fighting and it'll probably break roofies and washington will lose it to subdue the country very strong. in the meantime washington will be building a new ruling class and enriching the. only connection. with washington in libya under the sun i want to stop you right there you said that you think that washington will very likely turn libya into a puppet government with but we've got to stop for a second and say you know this has been said about other places let's look at what we just saw in tunisia the first place where the arab spring sort of happened elections there this past weekend islamised largely came out ahead there of course we expect egypt when they have their elections we expect that large likely to be run by the muslim brotherhood leaders in libya have vowed that it will be run by
4:07 pm
muslims but it certainly remains to be seen what kind of policies those in charge will push i mean you say it could be a puppet government but it seems to me that those who could very well come into power may not have a policies and ideals of the u.s. in mind. well you see there christine tunisia was a. proxy army overthrow the government or in libya this was this was a western instigated revolt i was not true in tunisia but when you talk about the national transitional council i mean still at least they. tell me. right exactly this was there are several people believe that it's largely made up of former and current members of al-qaeda so i mean. don't you think it's very possible that when alexion happen in libya that it's going to be people who have differing policies than the u.s. . well i certainly don't believe that washington and its nato puppet states
4:08 pm
conducted thousands and thousands of military or sorties on libya destroying most of the country killing thirty thousand people just in order to turn it over to al-qaeda and they certainly didn't do that and therefore that's not going to happen well certainly i think most people would hope that's the case probably only thing this country above figure take a look at this week alone just staying for a little longer because you know while talk about the puppet government of the us iraq this week kicked us out said sorry i know you want to keep a few thousand troops here after the end of this year not going to happen i mean karzai in afghanistan who a lot of people say is a puppet government for the us this week that afghanistan would support pakistan were attacked by the us you know so what about those as examples of other puppet governments and things like the us. if not
4:09 pm
a good idea for this country to engage in that anywhere. well i agree that we shouldn't be bothering you these people but we're not doing it in order to liberate them from charleston or anything of the sort we have when i say we i don't mean it i mean washington washington has its own agenda and that engineer is not in the interest of the people. bearing the brunt of the american military so in the case. against him washington is a bit off more than it could chew just like the soviets is there and karzai who is apartment has to be worried as to whether or not the united states is going to be able to make it stick to stand and as the americans get more more reckless and aggressive and threatened pakistan. he has to see that it looks like it may be overreaching and it's all going. no collapse and i'm going to go down so you may be
4:10 pm
trying to make his own arrangements with the taliban and the cracks there with afghanistan is different you say it's not it's a different situation and so in the case of iraq. the country is disunited because that's how the united states was able to go in there and spend seven years killing people and destroying everything and trying to occupy the place because it's disunited and there's been a transformation in power from sudanese to sheer but even the sheer aren't really united and it is quite likely that malarky would occur sort of here the operation is also wondering about the yard carman so he may take public positions that he doesn't really meet because this american embassy is massive it's still there it's huge i mean there's nothing like it on the face of
4:11 pm
the earth it must have some purpose and so we don't really we can't really say the americans are not going to continue to control iraq from the island scenes and they certainly didn't go to all the trouble to destroy libya and order to hand it over to their enemies and so there are there are agendas you mention at the embassy the u.s. embassy in iraq and we said much about is the only place where about one hundred sixty or so u.s. troops on the ground will remain after the end of this year what's left continue talking about libya though dr roberts and put it in the context of foreign policy in general under president obama and many in the mainstream media over the last few days think president obama's foreign policy is spot on from getting rid of all of that live on we're all lucky and now moammar gadhafi not to mention that the wars in iraq and libya. coming through it and what do you think about this assessment of
4:12 pm
the president's foreign policy especially as they have into the twenty five campaign well it's really not just his next washington's foreign policy and what we have is that for a a number of years the united states has been concerned about channels penetration of africa and certainly can trace in our libya and so we have a situation where china have all this oil investments in libya and elsewhere in africa and so bush and his last year created the american african command they call it afrikaner and its purpose is to counteract militarily china's economic contraction and so this was probably one of the main reasons for attacking libya for withdrawing khadafi it was because china was coming to dominate the energy economy of libya and the united states does not want china having
4:13 pm
independent sources of energy because it sees china as a main contender for for world power and leadership and so this is this is the real reason for the attack on libya and what about do you think there's a connection also between on that announcement that washington wealth and those i think have hundred or so troops into uganda as well that's that's the next step you see that's the africa command africa that you see also cut off he was all about a leader of opposition to west and going to trace you know he used to be a parent pan arab as he was trying to get the arabs organized he couldn't do that so he has to split so he switched to africa and he was sort of the hair of the african. you know whatever they call it and they were opposed to american.
4:14 pm
engines and now. taking over. more children you could go along with merck and the only reason. he had to go very interesting stuff sounds like you're all fired up and sound like your cat paris fired up about it too thanks so much for joining us coming up columnist and former reagan administration official paul craig roberts. moving on now to a look at the economy for many it is a snapshot of rising unemployment and standards of living that continue to fall with no end in sight these are just a few reasons thousands of americans across the country have joined the occupy wall street movement frustration and anger say many have reached their boiling points here in washington the occupy d.c. protest has doubled in size as more and more people say they want to not only
4:15 pm
protest to make but to make sure their voices are heard by those in the white house and those on capitol hill it's important to stand their ground here because this is after all for so many important decisions are made and it is also here where lawmakers and the president also him to be touting new plans that promise to fix some of these problems but more and more those hurt most to say leaders in this country are way too out of touch with how bad the crisis actually is to bring forth real change artie's maria explains these are difficult years for our country but like all americans we are talking of the times we live in the u.s. great recession began as a real estate crisis in two thousand and seven he day it's expanded into a national job emergency impossible to ignore the purpose of the american jobs act is simple. to put more people back to work according to the u.s. government nine point one percent of americans are unemployed yet experts say
4:16 pm
deceptive measures and statistical shenanigans are being used to mask a jobless epidemic that's far worse they even not count or time workers who are working full time work and they also don't count long term unemployed people who then unemployed for over six months back in time those people would have been considered unemployed but big government constantly changes the definition of who's unemployed and they do that so that the unemployment number looks lower and then it otherwise would and then when part time workers and the unemployed who have given up hope are factored in the real u.s. unemployment rate increases to more than sixteen percent a more telling but often ignored statistic so they were included and you know the government would have to look now as if they truly have a major crisis on and and have you something you know this is part of the problem and it can be
4:17 pm
a little house in you the status quo society starts completely breaking down broken down and in ruins the city of detroit is feeling the full force of america's economic decline one in three residents live below the poverty line half of the city's public schools are closing in crime is skyrocketing the capital of the country's motor industry now has an official unemployment rate of just under thirty percent but city officials and residents like the no b.s. after his say the real figure is close to fifty how do you describe it if. i think it's. indicative of what's going on in the rest of the country and they're just now feeling it to heal america's economic suffering experts say u.s. leaders need to abandon exaggerated optimism for the ugly truth unemployment is going to continue to get higher inflation as you can to get higher and rather than trying to rip out at the situation isn't as bad as it is we need to accept i'll bet
4:18 pm
it is our biggest then we have a better chance of recognizing the mistakes that were made us president barack obama has proposed a four hundred forty seven billion dollars plan to help resuscitate america's workforce but just like any light saving procedures recovery can only begin to takes place one of the condition is fully understood. r.t. new york. so what about this disconnect between those who can help and those who need the help joining me now for more is the author of this book black tuesday nomi prins. hey i know me you know let's start with with this if campaign season right now we've got a huge g.o.p. field hundreds of members of congress campaigning for reelection not to mention the president fighting to keep his job and i keep hearing jobs in the economy are the number one issue why so much talk and so little action.
4:19 pm
well first of all it's always campaign season and that's one of the reasons why we always hear so much and see so little getting done and there is a realization because there can't not be any that we have a jobs problem but as you know we've been looking at the stats here running into this segment and as people know when their day to day lives and see in cities and in the outskirts of cities throughout the country the job situation is a lot worse than any politician says and you've got one situation on the one hand you have obama who knows it's bad but is campaigning so wants to pretend that he can do something to make it better soon we have the republicans who are basically saying there's no way that's going to happen but we're going to be the ones who are going to fix it soon none of them are really citing those very dire statistics and therefore know that or accept that there is a problem bigger than they can handle or are handling it hence that disconnect continues but the president says he wants to handle this of course the american jobs act the president and his team traveling the country trying to sell this to
4:20 pm
the american people regardless he's certainly not selling it to congress i mean do you think with this is one of those things where i'm out of what is proposed the republican house says no way or is the president's plan fundamentally flawed. you know i think it's a bit of both the planet self has a significant proportion that just basically extends unemployment benefits which are necessary because we have a real problem with people who want to find jobs and can't find jobs because they don't exist because for every job that even does get created there are four people minimally in line to apply for that job there's just the inability to attain that work and so there's an unemployment benefits component to that bill which needs to be extended the other component really doesn't have a lot of power in it to create many jobs in the problem is that individuals who hear obama speak on either side of the aisle whether they supported him or don't like him just don't see those changes happening in fact we are continuing to
4:21 pm
hemorrhage jobs we have you know since december two thousand and seven when this recession began we've lost eleven million jobs we have nineteen percent of individuals who are part time employed and not able to basically make ends meet we have a youth unemployment rate close to twenty twenty to twenty five percent of pending on the area in the demographic we have a significant problem and i don't think anyone expects or except that obama can really change that on the other hand the republicans won't let anything through and that's an issue as well nor are they really proposing a better way of encouraging job creation here they're kind of going through the same tired rhetoric that if you cut taxes on corporations somehow magically there are going to be all these millions of new jobs created when in fact a corporations are sitting on money and not creating those jobs anyway or they're off shoring or outsourcing those jobs anyway and they're not paying any taxes already and not creating those jobs so so both sides have
4:22 pm
a real problem here and we talk about the difference in the numbers that we see often and the real numbers i want to throw something up here for people look for those without a job the average length of unemployment is twenty two weeks according to the bureau of labor statistics i should. mentioned that for workers over fifty five that number is almost double that's forty three weeks we talk to me about this i mean what do you see as some of the long term effects of having so many people especially in their last ten years really being able to work from age fifty five to sixty five being out of work well there's two reasons that's going to continue to be really devastating number one is those people have counted on the fact that they would have a job and therefore the ability to create more of a retirement nest for themselves you know there's all this fear of social security potentially going away or even though it's stable now might in the future so there's a fear that they are going with i talk across the country and many people that age group come up and and are really concerned that there's going to be
4:23 pm
a dramatic down grade to benefits even expected to find if you add into that the fact that they're not. making money in the meantime to pay their regular living costs right now and not able to save anything for the future and that becomes an even deeper concern and so the fact that this this period of of how long people have remained unemployed is not just large historically it's also continuing to grow because of the other fact that jobs are being created that's only going to continue to accelerate and exacerbate that problem. young people coming in who can't find jobs they are basically living at home with parents who are potentially looking at losing their own jobs and there's an encouraged cost of having that additional family member at home when that wasn't anticipated and that's a further drain on families across the country you know me sadly we're out of time next time i get john i want to talk more about your book black tuesday certainly came out at a perfect time considering what we're seeing with occupy wall street and the ninety
4:24 pm
nine percenters thanks so much for joining us thank you i want to turn now to oakland california where very early this morning protesters with occupy oakland were forcibly removed from their camp. part this is a police in riot helmet armed with flash grenades and rubber bullets or through their encampment about four thirty this morning after announcing over a public address system that the occupiers had been there for about two weeks breaking the law and all about eighty five people were arrested and those who went to other locations and were again matched by police and frustrated protester was overheard saying you know the cops are in the ninety nine percent they're doing the work of a one percent. some great pictures there let's turn now to new york city to look at the story of one member of the of occupy wall street whose economic rollercoaster
4:25 pm
took and kept him out to the streets archy's honest reports. from riches to rags an american fairy tale gone sour eric smith walks by a luxurious manhattan hotel the chef here for six years he whipped up posh meals for the rich and famous we did a bank which for. we did parties for the past three presidents there with. the recession changed everything today eric is jobless and broke leader we're now collecting unemployment which is. about three months because ingredients change too we work with a lot of high and. now it's lettuce and tomatoes for simple vegetable brought in a brooklyn soup kitchen where he volunteers as one of the cooks for occupy wall street protests walk in the thirty eight year old detroit native dreams of starting
4:26 pm
his own business at taco truck but doesn't have the money you know it's going to struggle. has made me think about all the people who struggle even more than most of the realization that one in six americans are living in poverty i didn't work. out because lead eric to the occupy wall street protests calling for change just go from bad to worse to even worse and it's really happening all over the country the food he and other volunteers cooked at the soup kitchen chairs everybody in the revolution. gets delivered to the protesters who spend day and night camping out our eric also sleeps here at the end of the night when there's a lot of people here i'll go to the comfort zone and find myself a sleeping bag and wait out the ground usually even though the shot is penniless in this revolution he says he's been waiting for it his entire life looking for which back cats in manhattan and trying to get the senate out as fast as possible and
4:27 pm
make sure. the for the rich operated in the now we spoke was wrong this this is something that's really going to make a difference in the country and even though life is tougher than ever before eric says he would not choose to be anywhere else but here from relatively well off to flat out broke is not an exceptional biography to have in the west these days eric story is one of millions but he is one of only hundreds that have found their way here so far is the future of our party new york. and that's going to do it for now up next to the capital account with warren lester worldwide protests against global financial system continues and economists say they fail more and will speak to one from down under i want to thank you so much for joining us we will be back in a half hour i'm christine.
