meanwhile the military alliance has postponed its preliminary decision to end its libyan mission by the end of this month following calls from the interim government to stay on as artists and he said now i discovered that off his death isn't making the country safer but. one of the major concerns here are weapons of firearms that are massively in the hands of the population here there are efforts from the end to see to try to collect and get people to willingly disarm and bring their weapons back but so far it doesn't look like that idea is working out we went to one a collection center if you will yesterday it covers an area of tripoli and for the entire day only about ten or twelve a k forty seven type had been returned just to give you an idea of what that number means walking down one or two blocks here in the capital you can see maybe two times or three times more of that amount of automatic weapons being waved around but even more serious concern here in terms of security about weapons storage arsenals unguarded warehouses full of weapons what
8:02 am
happens if those weapons get into the wrong hands already human rights watch has expressed grave concern about ground to air missiles that could essentially hit civilian aircraft if they get into the wrong hands of the security situation here very very sensitive not just recently some three hundred people were found murdered in sirte with their hands tied behind their back that is sparking accusations of political executions which is exactly what these former rebels were fighting against another thing that they just stinks if you will of hypocrisy of course is the way they could jaffe was killed i mean we saw the brutal gruesome footage that went viral the whole world watching pleading of course libyans here and although of a lot of the things you're seeing in the mass media is people just full of elation that gadhafi is dead that dead when you go out and speak to people and you push them a little bit you do find that there are a lot of people here that are hasn't changed. expressed just just terrible feelings
8:03 am
about the way he was killed not to mention the fact that he was of course very different to muslim tradition he was put on display for days and only after thousands of people came to see him was he finally buried just so it's not exactly as it seems from afar what people feel about gadhafi oh we come here and actually start talking to them that however not the case in the last three years how some people very outspoken and happy about the way gadhafi was killed distrust really the mass media experts are telling us that's because gadhafi with him to the grave took many of his secrets and dealings with the west. while the gruesome images of gadhafi as lynching were met with cheers and applause in america's mainstream media which was quick to herald his demise as the dawning of a new libya are just going to check out it's been finding out whether dancing and get off his grave is justified. it started with cheers and. the joy of killing the african leaders spread like wildfire in the us media it was just
8:04 am
a trillion dollars to get saddam and a billion dollars to get gadhafi the libya says they're going to pay back the billion that we spent too so it's going to end up being sort of free for free for nothing so let's get in on the ground there's a lot of money to be made in the future in libya there's a lot all to be produced no american soldier killed probably great opportunities ahead seems like the perfect new word for years but one that's meant to be a lesson to others but i think it's sense of an important message to other leaders in the region but i tell you that these arab dictators they are not very original just like saddam hussein caught amid a whole new market da he was a bad guy over many reviews would argue how bad he was for them considering what they don't people don't see the welfare rights but i think the ire of the u.s. audience as presented by the media he was all too much evil it's a demonization every step of the way against gadhafi in the media today always
8:05 am
one one man becomes a justification one leader of a country becomes a justification for destroying an entire country. for a few days the media savored the bloody made use of. and laughed at similarities between his character in a ditch and that of saddam hussein all the cheering about qaddafi is killing in the eye of the public effectively or raises the bad taste after the nato campaign no mention of league in civilians killed in nato strikes not much talk about that this structure in the country caused by those strikes conduct his killing is presented as a triumph a triumph which can create a perception that somehow it's perfectly ok to invade a country and help its leader be lynched but if it's presented as such a success doesn't it become more tempting to try the same mess. that's somewhere else i'm going to check our reporting from washington art. for reaction to this so
8:06 am
let's talk to the pet journalist james corvet he's been closely following what's happening as well as the coverage of the events that mr corvet what is your assessment of how gadhafi is brutal and was portrayed by some of the world's major news channels. well sadly i don't think it's very surprising how it was portrayed and that's an indictment of the western media but again it's not really surprising to people who saw for example the way that osama bin laden's death was was portrayed in the western media as just an opportunity for i guess a crass celebration rather than any type of introspection or soul searching and and of course in the libyan instance it's even even more apparent just the hypocrisy behind it this is supposed to humanitarian intervention that was supposedly about protecting civilians is now turned into reports of the n.p.c. fighters committing mass atrocities in certain against civilians including gadhafi himself so so there is an absolutely no no pause for thought or introspection in any of them that it means three media reporting that i've seen and that really is
8:07 am
to the detriment of of the media itself although again as i say it's not really surprising and unfortunately it's turned into a left right political spectrum type type thing where unfortunately the liberal left in america has seems to have bought on wholesale to the extension of american military might around the globe as this unadulterated good that's bringing happiness right let's just let's talk about his family's reaction be they want nato to ass or a war crime charges over what they regard as his deliberate killing what do you think their chances are. well i would say their chances are slim to none but i would be happy to be proven wrong in this instance but as we've talked about before i think the international criminal court is really just an extension of nato the nato powers foreign policy and i really don't think that this of this suit has much of a chance of getting anywhere but again it exposes the ocracy of the international criminal court which managed to indict gadhafi despite not
8:08 am
a single person from the prosecutor's office so much as stepping foot in libya to check on any of the charges that he that had been brought against him but of course now that we have this documented atrocity this war crime that had been committed of executing a prisoner i would very much doubt that this is going to go anywhere but again i'd be happy to be proven wrong on that point ok let's talk about some nato saying on in libya i mean the m.d.c. they want me to stay in leave it to the end of the year if it's not considering it does nato have to stay. well at this point one wonders what what would happen in any event it seems like libya is a country that's that's been broken and shattered and unfortunately the pieces are quite dangerous we know that there are weapons reserves that are now unguarded and they're just sitting there and we know that the. affiliated forces the m.t.c. have really taken charge of the country so so it is a destabilization that has happened in the question is who is going to stabilize the country so i think really the destabilization was part of
8:09 am
a foreseen it was certainly not something that was unforeseen so i think this is part of a strategy for for getting nato to stay so again it's not surprising that the in t.c. have asked their nato buddies to to stay on until the end of the year and presumably longer if if the case need be so so i think the question of how to stabilize the libya is at this point a very good one and i don't know what the answer to that is but it seems that nato forces have been the ones destabilizing the country and bombing civilians and causing such atrocities but i don't think that they're going to be part of the solution for the libyan people you haven't given this the current circumstances that m.t.c. is there right now do you think they are able capable of bringing that stability that libya needs right now with human rights groups are ringing the alarm about the atrocities apparently committed by the n t c fighters of course this goes both ways as well so i do think they're capable certainly not certainly not and i think that's been apparent since the beginning because they never enjoyed the support of
8:10 am
the majority of the tribes in in libya whereas gadhafi was obviously able to keep the country together for decades so we've gone from a regime of whatever sort that it was that was at least stable and enjoyed some of the highest living standards in all of africa to now a regime that self evidently is incapable of keeping a country together without leave the military might of nato backing them up and i don't think anyone can argue that things have actually substantially improved for the libyan people in all of this so so again i'm not sure what the solution. but the i think the solution cannot be to do you have more of the problem that created this whole mess in the first place which is the nato backed into see forces. as you mentioned that we have do do have a correspondent in tripoli were talking about arms you mentioned that earlier and she said our correspondent there says that libyans are heavily armed you walked up to what blocks you see a lot of arms weapons and the country is in a state of flux right now do you think we will see another violent struggle between various tribal factions this has been raised over and over what do you think. i
8:11 am
think it's almost a foregone conclusion considering how deeply divided libyan society is along tribal lines and to have these factions now basically not united behind any one leader because the in d.c. obviously is not does not enjoy the support of the entire country i think it's a very dangerous situation which of course raises the possibility of some sort of civil war and strife and again raises the question what's going to be done about it and unfortunately i think nato has positioned themselves to try to be the peacekeeping force involved here so again it's a win win for the nato forces that wanted to destabilize and affectively occupy the country and lose for the libyan people who were enjoying some of the highest living standards in all of africa all right thanks very much for a foster have had a journalist james corbett thank you. well ahead on r.t.e. at three thirty pm g.m.t. peter lavelle grills his guests over whether gadhafi is death was an execution or the logical outcome to libya's civil war. i just don't think there's any sign that
8:12 am
there's a war crime involved here i don't think it's murder and i think it's it's part of an ugly process that we call war the murder was in the ambulance so far as i can tell by young libyans and you know maybe he should be he should be held responsible for that but i just don't think that the attack on the convoy in the selfish never the order this was a drug that american drone plane that attacked his convoy alongside the french was warplanes and these two so really this was a joint french nato u.s. and murder could be the fact that he was technically alive but he got out as he scrambled out of his convoy hardly negates the role of the united states in his murders. and.
