from wall street to your street the occupy wall street movement spreads to cities around the u.s. it's reaching an important junction so which direction will the protesters choose what's coming up next we'll have a live report from new york. and a tactical victory for the movement this as protesters in oakland take back their square defending themselves from the tear gas and stun guns and from those very same police that attacked an iraq war veteran. that letter should be fired. strong words for strong emotions and support a fellow military officer supporting not only this severely injured marine the occupy wall street protests as a whole and he is not alone so as those who fight abroad join the fight at home lots to change. despite some of the negative reporting from the mainstream media
8:01 pm
the movement continues to spread this as protesters try to clean up america's mess fighting against corporate greed and those in the one percent but how does this movement fix what it says is broken talk to peter joseph founder of the site guys movement with his solution. it's thursday october twenty seventh eight pm in washington d.c. and christine and you are watching our team start this hour with a look at the occupy wall street movement protesters around the country are standing their ground despite attempts by many others to dismantle the movement in richmond virginia for example members of the tea party there on apparently given the mayor a bill for eight thousand dollars the amount they say the occupy protesters should pay for staying in the park. they say they're not going to leave and in oakland
8:02 pm
california protesters have reclaimed their square they were staying in after the oakland mayor decided to scale back police presence after some pretty violent pictures have upset masses of people around the country even around the world these pictures of course of police in riot gear using tear gas and non-lethal projectiles to try to clear protesters out of the way one of those protesters you see in here iraq veteran scott olsen he was critically injured you can see him being carried off with a fractured skull and brain swelling from a blunt force trauma possibly that happened from an exploding tear gas canister much of the movement of course just outside while wall street itself and i want to go now to new york and talk to our two producer lucy catherine lucy talk to me about what you're seeing i know you spent a lot of this month in zuccotti park you came back here to washington for a few days and now you are back in new york what is the latest that you can tell us about. well one of the things i was really struck by christine was sort of the way
8:03 pm
the physical and count has really changed i mean it looks a lot bigger and more impressive than than than before and of course the rain and the bad weather today is about indicator numbers but as opposed to last time we now have a couple of these giants tents that have popped up across park liberty plaza as like to call it and that raises some interesting issues for one when things are more open in the past for example a lot of times it's easier for the protesters for the organizers to sort of keep track on things and make sure that sort of illegal activities weren't going on that people are behaving themselves and keep out sort of the so-called riff raff a lot of the protesters in fact i've spoken to have expressed the concern that these tents are not going to be a dividing factor in numerous ways a it's an opportunity for bloomberg theoretically to come in and crack down even harder a lot of people are really suspicious as to why there hasn't been sort of a more aggressive response by the police on the stance because it was one of the sort of illegal things they're not supposed to do in this area and the other thing
8:04 pm
is again they really feel like it's sort of divided the camp there's a lot more different elements there you know they have to see in the tents no one really knows exactly what's going on and so it just looks a little bit more imposing a little bit less open and friendly and democratic than it did before in the past i'm wondering a lot of the head i haven't been down to to zuccotti park i've only been here in d.c. to macpherson square to occupy d.c. i didn't realize there were there weren't any tents before where there are a few and you say there there's a lot more now how many more tons i mean at least a hundred but i counted and that was actually one of the funny issues because when we had the anticipated major crackdown by the bloomberg administration just a few weeks ago when there were thousands of protesters in the park that was one of the things that police would go into the park to physically sort of breakdown or move in arrest protesters for so a lot of people are very suspicious as to why the new york city police department isn't really acting on the sort of anticipating. or perhaps the proverbial other
8:05 pm
shoe to drop well perhaps one of those reasons lucy is of course what we saw in oakland those pictures out of oakland and how much they've really upset people kind of a violent reaction there by police who used these non-lethal projectiles to use tear gas and tear gas and as we saw an iraq war veteran severely injured i want to know i know you're in new york but from what i understand a lot of the protesters in new york have really gained strength from what they saw in oakland what have you seen. oh yeah i mean i completely agree with that in fact i've spoken to at least three different protesters who now came out today or last night to be more accurate and specifically because of this reaction you know they were shocked to see this kind of level of crackdown in their own country for centrally nonviolent actions and while it has rallied a few more people to the cause so to speak it has been sort of interesting to see how it's changed the nature of the protests here some of the organizers that have
8:06 pm
been here in new york from day one said that this sort of they do a lot of this nonviolence training where you know they ask people to stay calm and sort of make their get their message across without actually getting aggressive with the police and a lot of that they said went out the window last night where several hundred of not a thousand protesters marched across new york getting a little bit more aggressive the police shaking barricades in some cases pulling netting the infamous are internetting out of the police hands and what many protesters said to me is that they were really surprised by the sort of mild unusually mild response by the police force here because remember this is the same police force that pepper sprayed women drove a scooter over a scooter over an attorney's leg and beat several protesters down so again they were very they don't know what exactly to make of this you know it is the police force calming down because the mayor and the city has realized that this has gotten too big to sort of continue the bad kind of p.r. with the crackdowns or is this a sign of something to come and
8:07 pm
a lot of the mood here in the park is quite wary they really think that the something immense is going to happen in the next few days where there will be some sort of crackdown a massive crackdown to essentially stop the accusation they just they don't know what why there is this sudden loss in the storms that is interesting so perhaps behind closed doors police are planning something and in interim they're going to just lay low and you think about i'm wondering. as a result of this or as a result of anything what we can. to come you know in the coming days and weeks i know that in oakland they've called for a general strike and a mass day of action that's set for november second i do you know also on the weekends we often see a lot larger numbers come out anything that you've heard in terms of events planned or training or anything if there is a kind of park. wasn't going to mention the open general strike that's actually one of the proposals that folks are here are considering doing which would be sort of unprecedented if they were able to pull it off
8:08 pm
a general strike means you know taxi driver stop working students cut school workers employees take off from work whether or not they'll it will be effective and that remains to be seen but a recent new york times poll in fact one that came out today says that eighty seven percent of residents now support the occupy wall street movement which is a huge jump from last week was about sixty seven percent we know there is a mass sort of action plans along the line likes of what we saw with the brooklyn bridge rally or times square but they're doing a lot of sort of defensive training because again as i mentioned the general mood here is that something's going to happen they don't quite know what this law is but they're quite concerned about it in fact on sunday one of the organizers i spoke to said that they are going to be sort of doing a fake run in terms of what to do with the police actually crack down and try to clear the park so they'll be going through different practice actions you know how to defend so to speak the territory they're putting together in place this text messaging alert system because twitter is so notoriously unreliable in terms of
8:09 pm
when things are actually getting out of hand and that's actually one of the text message alert system is one of the things that was able to get so many people turned out in oakland when that devastating action took place so i guess wednesday the november second general strike would be a day to watch for but a lot of focus also later in november november seventeenth and twenty eight mass rallies are planned not just here in new york or across the country and the world so we'll have to see how that plays out she. be interesting also to keep our eye on this as the weather continues to turn i know it was rainy here today rainy there are some of the protesters here been talking a lot about how to stay through the winter they're planning on staying through through the snow through sleet and we will of course keep our eyes and loosely will keep you there to our team producer who's a cavanagh's in new york city and to get out the up to the latest news from the occupy wall street front lines in new york you can log on to lucy's twitter page
8:10 pm
she is at least the caffeine of. all right and as we mentioned the latest events have certainly garnered support and the number of people joining throughout the u.s. these numbers have been really skyrocketing i want to take a deeper look now in the changing faces of the movement and how it's changing the movement itself argues on the south a church on a saucer church going to take a look at the events from the last several days. america's autumn faces covered up protesters fleeing from tear gas shot into the crowd by police i miss ninety seven arrests in oakland california. on tuesday night. to four year old marine and iraq war veteran scott olsen shot in the head by a police tear gas canister unable to even see his name. he's now in critical condition. at a march of solidarity with the open protesters in new york leads to ten arrests. protestors slammed into the ground and netted by colleagues earlier in other marine
8:11 pm
confronts police treatment of protesters in a video now gone viral on the web. if you like if you think those who risked their lives for america now part of the uprising marines and others who serve the u.s. go public in their fight for the occupy wall street cause let's find out what this means for the fact that more and more military personnel are joining us shows that they recognize that this is an american movement it's not about hippies in a negative stereotype thirty year old gary briggs has served in the national guard for the last two years he's spending his short vacation at occupy wall street got some marines national guard navy seals. then more the better the guardsmen is outraged at the fact that marines are getting attacked at home and the cop that better should be fired and hung up by the balls. others here believe it won't be
8:12 pm
long however until the police join the crowds instead of restricting they're going to see a lot of protesting. and they're going to see that their picture is zero but even if this doesn't happen the movement won't be scared to wait any time soon but marines and other military vets pledging to how. the protesters back. everybody is being together and the rope that's being created here goes toward this those who chirp you know archie. you know the last forty eight hours have in some ways changed the direction of the movement and many say there's a different feeling in the air let's go back to very early tuesday morning this is once again oakland california you could say this is where it all started with police in riot gear busting up the camp where protesters have been staying for about two weeks they used tear gas to clear crowds and proceeded to stomp on
8:13 pm
people's tents and their personal belongings also arrested nearly one hundred people later in the day protesters returned to reclaim that space just outside of city hall and were met with an even more violent barrage of police these pictures we did show you a little bit earlier but we want to show you again because this really is one of the faces of men now scott wilson a military veteran who served two tours in iraq he was carried away with a fractured skull and brain swelling from blunt force trauma. still trying to figure out why they think it might have been an exploding tear gas canister now earlier i spoke to want to scott olsen's friends and also a fellow iraq war veteran names emily gates to start things off i asked her to give me a quick update on her friend scott wilson's condition take a listen. well yes the last i heard is that god is now in their condition of greed and. breeding on his own but it seems like he's going to need surgery to remove some of the pressure from his brain. what was your reaction the reaction of
8:14 pm
other veterans that you've spoken with over the last twenty four hours to see this video i could be mistaken but i'm pretty sure scott was even wearing that trend's t. shirt when this happened what has been the conversation about the fact that this happened . well first got was at an impact bring a better and for peace t. shirt which i think makes all of this even more ironic but the veterans community is just completely horrified that all this happened to scott and that this could happen to anybody but especially to a veteran it just goes to show you the the reaction of law enforcement to the. kind of fire indiscriminately rather than actually look for individuals causing trouble and attempt to root them out i want to play some video from yesterday i believe this happened after the news of the police raid in oakland and of scott
8:15 pm
olsen's injuries came down. oh. oh oh these protesters say it's dark it's night time but what they're saying is new york is oakland oakland is new york they're showing solidarity with you guys in oakland some people even we're seeing signs that say we are all scott wilson i'm wondering if you have any idea i mean it's got aware of the reaction that his injuries have generated from across the country. and far as i know he is still not able to communicate to communicate with people so i'm not sure what his reaction is but i do know that god. has. his situation has shown that there needs to be strained and solidarity because otherwise individuals are going to keep getting harmed and we can't if
8:16 pm
we're all sitting together i know it's a cliche but if we're all sitting together we can we can all be taken down and we need to all be looking out for one another and. i think that that scott passion just the fact that god was there and was there. in in uniform with the veterans for peace t. shirt and you know he works you have a job you know he's not sitting around that is on and that's all day he's he's contributing and in every way the person i think contributed you know i wasn't even down there i i you know now i'm going to for indeed out there you can bet your ass . you know he's. his passion you should be inspiration. and especially in light of the rewards that he got for perfection that was only eight iraq war veteran also
8:17 pm
a friend. then if you want to put up some additional reaction by veterans those pictures of scott olsen sparked anger from so many people especially fellow veterans the internet today filled with a major show of support i want to read just a few comments we got these from the business side of them by today euthanasia rights of fellow veteran here as well that's our asking brother i didn't stomp around in the you know what to come home and watch my brothers spit on like this. and one key pros when someone attacks the u.s. marine who are everyone my family i will stand and i will fight to protect them because they did the same for me and asked nothing in return and a lot to live in comments oakland just woke up a sleeping dark dog that people need to protect them the police are supposed to be that dog instead they bite their owner off like they woke up the big dogs marines we need you we have reached a tipping point many of those comments in response to
8:18 pm
a photo posted on the web site take a look at that this is marine corps sergeant j. j. until holding up a picture of scott often and a sign that says you did this to my brother just a little while ago i spoke to the man in that photo who also served two tours in iraq and ever met scott olsen and told me why he took the picture and what it meant to him i wish. the vocabulary to describe the plethora of illusions that i felt when i saw the picture of corporal basin. that picture was taken about fifteen minutes after i found out what happened and i just felt a need to express all the various emotions that were going on inside of me. and i knew that i wasn't the only person that felt this way i figured i would go and. try to be one of the people that was able to express the feelings that he felt.
8:19 pm
from what i understand you don't know scott olsen but you also served two tours in iraq talk to me sergeant about the relationships of you know people who serve in combat zones whether or not you serve together what is that is in the it seems to me there's a very loyal sort of feeling that you build up among and within the military community to talk to me about this. they don't reserve the english language seem to . the five i mean they're all just honestly there are no words to express the bond that marines feel for each other and this goes across the service but it's very specific for marines loreen's regard each other as brothers and sisters and we mean it i know but i may not personally know corporal olson but i know his story i know what he had to eat when he went to iraq i know what is what to work was like and i know how it feels to have rockets and mortars flying at you
8:20 pm
just like corporal olsen does we lot of people say that marines are initially broken down and then rebuilt to be marines and a lot of us look at that as as the start of a new life so what are also started his life in the sack same way that i started mine we are similar things basically we will always share a bond together whether we're active or not and to see what happened to my brother and i do use that word almost as literally as i can to see what happened to him just surprised me i may add i couldn't believe it and i immediately felt that bond again and you know one of my own was injured how does that make you feel to know that across the country this bond is also stretching just to other protesters. to be honest i wouldn't expect less from from any other american military or not
8:21 pm
veteran or not i would expect people to feel despond we're all year on the planet together and you know like it or not we're all in this together. i'm thankful and proud to be associated with the people of new york and in cities all across this country that share this bond that i share with all. that was j. gentil former sergeant in the united states marine corps. and a lot of what those protesters on our occupy wall street are frustrated and angry about is a system that no longer works that's harming the economy making it difficult for both veterans and regular people people with college degrees to find jobs it is a system many say is broken well earlier i spoke to peter joseph about this he is the founder of the man he has been also very critical of the mainstream media's coverage of the occupy movement so i asked him to lay things out for me and tell me what his biggest problems are with it here's his take. well needless to say the
8:22 pm
mainstream media is doing what it always does best and that's maintaining the status quo it's not far fetched understanding to see that the values that are perpetuated by the system are so seeded with wealth generation and the corporations that run this country obviously to do the best they can to make sure the public is not aware of the growing crisis that this economic system is creating across the board so i want to commend our to you once again for what i've just seen for example it's really wonderful the service that you're providing and some of the mainstream media. have dismissed it long ago well we appreciate it we have been covering this since the first day before a lot of people even heard of this but you know i will say i you know i keep my eyes on what's on the cable networks that they have started to be out there a little more in terms of covering and showing that this is actually going on first of all and you know i do also have to say that i've seen more and more stories about. for example the gap between rich and poor income inequality. are you've
8:23 pm
given up on the mainstream media but do you think that after some time that having this discussion will change things will lead to a better country. or a better world i do think the pressures that are emerging are not going to stop what's been generated with occupy wall street excuse me what underscores that generation that banks that anger that. that insurrection if you will isn't going to stop because of the mechanisms of the system which i'm happy to talk about as we continue and the mainstream media will be forced to recognize some attributes of it but it's always going to be colored in a particular way because that's basically what they do that's what they have to do that's their talking points come from but i don't dismiss the mainstream media i say that in rhetoric obviously i'm paying attention to or if i would make the commentary that i do but i think the public needs to begin to understand that have seen the concentration of corporate power ownership of these major mainstream
8:24 pm
institutions is always going to produce biased media and it's a natural consequence that people are unethical when the mainstream is just the value that's associated and so if they promote just like our t.v. and other great more independent avenues have values that are much more open they're much broader and more more informed and therefore you have present actually what many people want to see what the voice of the people may actually be as opposed to the filtering that goes through the mainstream i know the entire occupy movement began as a blackout of course and then the outrageous criticisms calling them communists and socialists in the bunch of you know drug addicts or people without jobs or no incentive and all that stuff went through that phase now we have hit a phase where the mainstream is going to do some kind of attention some type of attention but again i want a word everybody that is going to be colored so everyone needs to go to outlets that are not mainstream and you can start to frequent blogs need to frequent all of the independent media media that has arisen from common people that are reporting are enabling really we live in
8:25 pm
a world with everyone having cameras now so it's very easy to go to video blogs and actually see and digest information yourself or even going to if you want is some of these parks where people are you know it seems like more and more they're happening all around the country. peter i want to talk real clear about your movement does ice movement it encourages also a change in the system so when it comes to some of the things that these protesters on wall street are frustrated with you know government officials that are very much chosen by the amount of money they can raise banks being bailed out veterans returning home and not being able to find a job i guess i want to get your take pick your brain a little bit what are your solutions to some of these problems. well just to correct the language really quickly it's not my solutions it's solutions that have come about through a very simple technical analysis of what defines society and what creates good public health good mental health what we have learned about social management when it comes to our scientific benchmark just to point out before i answer that question our entire social system is based on archaic view
8:26 pm
a traditional notion that was established long long ago it's really kind of extension of feudalism is what the political system is today the economic system is a socially darwinistic notion that there isn't enough to go around so therefore we have all these mechanisms built in for scarcity and we now have one billion people starving on this planet three billion people living on less than two dollars a day so you look at the clock consequences of the system and then you step back and you think about what a true economic system might be in a train of thought would be established true of economic system is not a system based on exchange in money and labor for income that's a contrivance that we've concocted through a trip traditional unfoldings as we've learned through time what our place in the world actually is what we are it said are a true economy which is what's now emerging in the public mind is the management of the earth the true economy is management of this household that we have and proper management is a technical orientation we do need of the human population as a technical orientation so just as we build an airplane with
8:27 pm
a very specific design you can't have too much too much deviation on that or you might injure the efficiency of the efficacy of the airplane we have to construct a society technically now i can go on a long tangent about what a technical approach to social management may be but let me just say this if we do not actually begin to manage the earth's resources if we do not actually begin to take care of society as it is we are going to see numerous forms of destabilization occur systemically breaking down the social order causing much more chaos that we're beginning to see now appears raking in gary lee is speaking in broad terms that i totally restructuring of society. sound like great. ideas but what about realistically in terms of some of these very specific problems plaguing society right now obviously everyone especially down there in this movement believes that an entire restructuring needs to happen but do you think that there's some things that can happen now yes i do think that there are things that can happen now but
8:28 pm
the things that will happen now will only be patches until the larger or restructuring occurs again the most of people in the protest community occupy wall street or even the mainstream activist community never stop to think about the structure of the system the structure and the psychology and values that come from that structure and what's reinforced and that's where there's like there's a moment really comes into play and i could list all sorts of things that i could alleviate different tensions as far as the debt crisis first of all you can have to have a right debt forgiveness across the board if you expect to stop the cancer of that growth that's that's it the entire system is based on debt being created money being created out of debt interest charged upon it so therefore you have boom your black hole instant exponentially increasing unstoppable debt growth period that's it so it's structural to the system how many people are talking about that not that many well i get a lot of what you call this what it is i think a lot of these protesters are talking about that the system needs to change most people just still very unsure of how that happens unfortunately we're out of time
8:29 pm
peter joseph founder of this i want and that is going to do it for now but for more on the stories we covered that archie dot com slash usa or check out our you tube page youtube dot com slash r t america you should also follow me on twitter i'm out for as easy the big picture when thom hartmann is up in a half hour for me and christine for south so much for watching. you know how sometimes you see a story and it seems so bleak you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm tom harvey welcome to the big picture.
