9:31 pm
what about the big picture i'm sorry hartman coming up in this half hour of voters overwhelmingly oppose ohio's anti-union well known as a speech by so called next month's election when the laws on the ballot for repeal will or voices be heard or will corporate cash drowned about an answer coming up and more than fifty years ago harry truman said something that still rings true today we can only get the democrats to act like harry. through war and what the
9:32 pm
democratic party needs to do right now turn things around and ideally take. the. republican efforts to subvert our democracy are rampant around the world in tennessee an eighty six year old veteran is essentially forced to pay a whole tax since a new law there requires citizens in that state to get a photo id to be eligible to vote in the next election and then went to the d.m.v. to get his new photo id and was told he needed to pay eight bucks for it it's a clear violation of the twenty fourth amendment which clearly says that the right of citizens to vote should not be abridged with a poll tax or any other tax state officials have since said this was a mistake and if the man had simply made it clear they needed the id to vote then it would have been free so i guess you could avoid pain for the right to vote as
9:33 pm
long as you know the secret code words meanwhile in michigan republican lawmakers are pushing through legislation to make it harder to register people to vote similar legislation has already been passed in florida were high school teacher is now facing thousands of dollars in fines simply for helping her students register and there then there's what's going on in ohio where important election is looming that will determine the fate of that union law as the five there corporations and special interests are trying to drown out the voices of the people who want to send governor john k. sic a message on where he can stick his anti-union laws so we're boats for corporate money when the selection for more on what's going on in ohio i'm joined by mike woodward reporter truthout dot org mike welcome. now thanks for having me here great great to have you with us thanks for joining us this is an off year election it's not even a midterm election how much money is being spent on this not. what people estimated
9:34 pm
that about thirty three to forty million dollars would be spent and we just got new numbers in just today that shows that over thirty million dollars have been spent by both sides on t.v. ads on mailers and it's coming from unions and it's coming from you know private companies on both sides are how much how much money is secret corporate cash. well we don't know that because the g.o.p. groups there are trying to keep it on the books instead of buying on the books aren't revealing any of their finances they don't have to pay set themselves up as nonprofits and they set up front groups to raise their money so we don't actually know how much is coming from from private interests but we can look back at who supported case sick in getting him elected and then you know he was elected and quickly turned around and champion senate bill five so we look back at his election we can see how groups like the republican governors association and and their front
9:35 pm
group which is happening why right now it's comical hio great how the republican governors association in the past funneled money from companies like coca-cola and wal-mart and private healthcare companies into defeating democratic incumbent ted strickland getting case that into office and then allowing casing to quickly turn around and get it on books so amazing what role is fox news and news corp playing in this. well governor case they used to be part of news personality and you know he received a million dollars from news corp during election actually he didn't the republican governors association did and then use that money they been able to middleman money from and it is like box news and the koch brothers into getting him elected and now that he's elected he's you know this is not just this s.b. five go isn't just a referendum on the bar it's a referendum on case the self and if he gets embarrassed with if you go vote for his own citizens it's not going to look good for the rest of his term so you know
9:36 pm
we can assume that now that it's more money coming in from the people who supported him originally trying to protect their investment are there any kind of laws know how to force disclosure of the. you know invisible corporate cash that's coming in the state. there are but the way that these groups set it up they set up a non profit corporation as fundraising arms and they don't have to report. any of their any of their fundraising one of the groups building about ohio which is the main republican view while defending senate bill five just today revealed some of their joints they didn't reveal donation amounts they got a lot of money from the house chamber of commerce and. you know companies like discount drug mart and large steel companies but they didn't tell us how much money they got from each one of the donors and make y.-o. great a front group for the republican governors association is also
9:37 pm
a nonprofit based in d.c. they don't have to disclose either now on the union side in the pro-labor stovey of we are ohio that's the major vehicle campaigning for repeal this them selves of the political action committee and under iowa law they have to disclose and they have been disclosed and from what information we has it looks like the pro-union side it's actually raised and spent more it's interesting we saw this same inundation of corporate money in the wisconsin recall elections earlier this year and frankly you know union money coming into the fight you know to push for the recalls. but the the big corporate box really helped republicans keep control that that state by just by the skin of the cheaper one vote could the same result happen here in ohio . well the repeal is been ahead in the polls for a while and there is a pretty large grassroots contingent of people going towards the door to get this repealed however after the republican governors association building
9:38 pm
a better ohio start bear media campaign the pro repeal side was then dropped in the polls are still ahead but it's going to be close and you know we're looking at ohio we can think about governor scott walker in wisconsin he was received some of the same out of state support in his arguments for alexion campaign as its case they did it from you know the koch brothers from alec companies and from the republican governors association and you know the result was two governors with similar ideologies and then putting similar bills through the legislature. just really in the last minute here we think we have if senate bill is as the five as repeal the false question to i guess it's called. passes what will move what will it mean for the as a whole and for the state of ohio. well you know the union movement in ohio has definitely invigorated by this battle they've raised a lot of money but they've also gotten thousands and thousands of volunteers on the
9:39 pm
street and it kind of created a sense of solidarity between private sector unions and public sector unions that hasn't seen an eye on a long time i talked to a lot of people there on the ground group very excited about the energy and the momentum that was created by the movement to get this repealed to get there once it's on the ballot it's good shoot too and if you vote no you're voting to veto a senate bill five to get this veto vote has really brought together the union movement is going to be tougher for public employees have passed the five states on the books certainly as are quite a party right there you have to pay more attention health care costs and the unions might lose a bit of influence in a key swing state but on the grassroots level this is really created it isis sense of solidarity how many together for a lot of parents and wonderful wife just to just be clear that should be vote no on issue two. is are you though no one issue to you voting for a veto if you vote yes you're going to be on the books ok. woodward thanks a lot for being with us. thank you so much thomas jefferson famously said i know of
9:40 pm
no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves unfortunately with the republican assault on democracy and voting rights around the country it's becoming harder and harder to hear the people's voices. it's the good the bad and the very very sad was sogginess leave a really. good to tighten the pit bull normally when people think of pit bulls they think of ferocious thoughts of a tight as a lifesaver after titans owner gloria benton suffered an aneurism and fell down fractured skull type immediately sprang into action and notified her husband of the x. . running around the circle to monitor the first level and background earth of the step to back down. so i think i'm going to follow him which i did low and behold
9:41 pm
a sort of a new there's no end to the time frame and dark and then the quicker we had he when i'm in here because when i leave i don't take making the computer caught napping and we can even play the death of a new rhythm killer. thanks to titans guidance he found his wife and rushers were hospital to a hospital vantage point neighborhood association has since awarded titan the neighbor of the year award making him the first dog ever to receive such honors now a titan could just teach john boehner eric cantor value you know there's the bad evan coyne maloney the conservative filmmaker associated with fake journalist act james o'keefe was spotted in new york city at the occupy wall street movement it wasn't very cover the movement as a journalist was there to give it a bad name lonnie was caught hanging out and eating out belongings and rolling papers to occupiers in hopes of getting a nifty little shot that would likely end up on fox. news later when his plan
9:42 pm
didn't work out and he was exposed as. you have farms in your backpack stuff and you taking pictures with people which he could hear was not only shaken far rolling papers are you taking pictures of people who were given what we expect to see those pictures on fox news i don't know the filth taken out nevil so you don't see what's a perfectly killer not taking pictures of people with gongs given out bars softness or somehow you give it away paul no one surely can you give us some thermals we're staying up all. as the right wing so-called journalist credo goes if what you're trying to uncover isn't religious make it up that's the way the right with it and the very very ugly house republican leadership in charge of the house of representatives republican leadership is in charge of figuring out what bills will be brought to the floor and voted on and they have a lot of explaining to do as to why one specific piece of legislation hasn't moved
9:43 pm
anywhere and congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz introduced legislation to rename a room in the capitol building after gave zimmerman gave was the congressional aide who was killed while trying to save congresswoman giffords in the tucson shooting sure he was the first congressional aide ever killed in the line of duty in the history of our nation a bill has three hundred sixty six co-sponsors but has not been voted on and no one can explain why the having imposed as majority leader eric cantor why his office directed questions to speaker john boehner as office which declined comment because republicans are just too busy with their war on women and the e.p.a. is too busy running post offices after reagan to honor a hero. who was killed and just happens to be a democrat at spirit here. it's
9:44 pm
not even holloway yet but at least here on the east coast cold and flu season is already upon us people have come up with many odd remedies in the never ending battle with the germs that inevitably so many of us shivering under the covers for a few days out of the year back in one hundred thirty five before we had penicillin or modern antibiotics two doctors at st mary's hospital medical school in london succeeded in treating pneumonia with injections of. olive oil doctors fraser and walsh and mole so five the oil and then and then injected it into the veins of pneumonia patients the high temperature of pneumonia patients drop to normal within twenty four hours of receiving the injections and three weeks later the patients from back to normal doctors concluded that the olive oil injections worked because the oil was very effective at absorbing the pneumonia or other toxins circulating in the blood because the oil globules attracted and sopped up the toxins but they
9:45 pm
that me also a little crazy and dangerous but this week a researcher at harvard university said that the oil ready actually made sense specifically for that time and place number those are the days before an exotic sort of scope so it was not uncommon for people to die of pneumonia when it was left untreated in fact ammonia was the leading cause of death in the united states in the early one nine hundred s. and harvard scott podolski wrote the book pneumonia before at about x. so that the olive oil therapy had some solid scientific roots ciro therapy treatment by the one nine hundred thirty s. involved injecting animal derived antibodies to a specific strain of bacteria and people attacked it required some level of immunological no likewise the idea of using oil to sop up nasty bacterial by products for detox a vacation in the liver depended on elevated understanding of how the body fights and clears invaders and it's probably not just a coincidence that alexander fleming the scientist who discovered the penicillin
9:46 pm
mold worked just down the hall from frazier and walsh at st mary's hospital medical school back about that time now where's that salad with olive oil dressing. coming up it seems democrats and the gang of twelve have forgotten something. about them as the leader of. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through had sort of been made who can you trust no one who is in view with the global machinery see where we had a state controlled capitalism is called session so when nobody dares to ask we do our tea question more.
9:47 pm
your take my take of the second of the show when we answer your questions comments criticisms and opinions here on the big picture our first comments are night is from the tom hartman page on facebook but he wrote it's quite apparent that the republican party are not americans anymore as showing us they do not care at all about the people put them in office to do a job that they're not doing how do they think they're going to get elected again
9:48 pm
or is the voting fixed again i'll pick you the republicans have made it very clear that they're focused on politics first and serving the best interests of americans a very second they say that their main priority right now and they come right out and say this is to make sure that president obama doesn't get elected to a second term and they're doing everything within their power to blame all of our current political and economic struggles on president obama even though it's their obstructionist behavior in congress this time the president's hands and preventing any legislation from being passed particular legislation like create jobs whatever mandate the american people may have given them in last year's congressional elections disappears every time they shoot john another piece of legislation they could be putting people back to work but they still have the support of their super rich and corporate backers want to make sure that their interests are protected on capitol hill but now as the ninety nine percent movement is showing that it's
9:49 pm
a force to be reckoned with we're going to start answering to we have people as well earlier this week i asked you to imagine a world without fox so-called news also known as g.o.p. t.v. it seems like that daily take. it hit home with many of you especially on our facebook page michael wrote it's like saying imagine a world without read selfishness and war for if the world was totally develop a boy had these three behaviors there'd be toadies there for anyone to watch fox news and your posted let's get a little real here fox news is not the only station providing fear and hatred there just the ones doing it out the open c.n.n. is a b c all the local mainstream channels do a great job of promoting everything that is wrong with the current political discourse trisha's i would love it my family are all victims of their propaganda it's so sad to see once thinking and all its talk and soundbites maria agreed that
9:50 pm
i would love to shut down the fox forever i'm strong believer that we need to versity for our survival and i'm one hundred percent sure that we can all live without fox lies and propaganda that world would be much better without a network where the whole concept is based on exploitation of less fortunate people meanie share this advice i write it right around with a bumper sticker that says fox news is bad news for america turn it off today that's a great it and finally adam said i can dream that big. ok well here's my take on it i really don't personally have a problem with fox news being and doing what they do if only they would stop calling it new fox's regionally conceived back in one nine hundred seventy two memo to richard nixon from roger ailes who is currently the president fox news said and at that time was working for nixon suggesting that the white house get some rich republicans to fund what roger ailes called g.o.p. t.v.
9:51 pm
to put out republican talking points under the guise of a new us i make no pretense that what i'm doing is not is news it's not it's a pain and i'm pretty blunt with my opinions and my opinion is that any network that has the word news as part of its name and particularly it claims to be fair and balanced when in fact it's a g.o.p. t.v. is not a positive thing for america that's it for your take my take tonight if you'd like your comments and questions for it on this segment a picture of the big picture listen up. you know democrats need to take a good long look in the mirror because many of them seem to have forgotten just who
9:52 pm
the heck they are yesterday the six democrats on the gang of twelve super committee introduce their first proposal as in first offer a starting point for negotiations and go she asians and the republicans over the next month and in it they proposed cutting four hundred billion dollars from medicare that's a four hundred billion dollars cut from medicare the program democrats created. a program the democrats fought hard against republicans like ronald reagan who even voiced ate a thirty three lp a recording heard by millions of americans the a.m.a. sent off all over the country suggesting that medicare would put us on the road to a soviet style of socialism that's a four hundred billion dollar cut for medicare a program that seventy eight percent of americans want left alone and that's a four hundred billion dollars cut from medicare it's only going to get worse
9:53 pm
because again this is the first offer on the table from the democrats on the game it's worth so once the republicans start negotiating it's a safe bet i think that that number is going to get bigger and bigger and bigger which begs the question why i'm earth would democrats put their second most prized creation behind social security on the table for sacrifice when everyone knows that the republicans are going to compromise on raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires no matter what the democrats offer up a democrat not yet we learn their lesson you know why the republican base can't get excited about mitt romney because he's a flip flopper he doesn't stand for anything he does what's easy he does what he needs to do to get a few votes or cut a deal or a couple years ago the sea pack conference if you want a radio show from there every year after five years they were walking around there
9:54 pm
was a flipper somebody dressed up like flipper the dolphin and people were handing out flipping you know the answer ironically republicans and democrats for some reason are acting like a bunch of mitt romney's they're willing to ditch the party's principles in the hope that they can strike some kind of deal with republicans. some kind of backroom deal which they might. get a tiny morsel but what they're looking for are the republicans as john boehner famously brag after their last negotiations said he got ninety eight percent of what he wanted democrats this is a losing strategy the american people don't want compromisers they want someone who sticks to their guns who believes in something and is willing to fight for it for example americans might have hated bush's policies or at least many americans but
9:55 pm
they like his swagger or at least his convictions are the appearance of the same was true of rated and f.d.r. and harry truman you may have disagreed with them and a lot of people did vehemently all of you always knew where they stood the american people have aggressively embraced what progressives have fought to bring to this nation over the last century from teddy roosevelt square deal to franklin roosevelt's new deal to lyndon johnson's great society seventy eight percent of americans oppose cutting medicare a program created by democrats seventy three percent of americans oppose cutting medicaid another program created by democrats sixty two percent of americans oppose any kind of cuts to social security another program created by democrats sixty seven percent of americans oppose cutting off unemployment insurance another program created by democrats let republicans run on their desire
9:56 pm
to cut these programs what a moron you try to run on handing over social security to wall street bankers they handing medicare over to for profit health insurance executives because they can't win at least not as long as democrats don't give in. and offer cuts up themselves like the six democrats in the gang of twelve just did it's really something democrats want to act like there's no difference between them and republicans that's the point of even having two parties as legend has harry truman saying people don't want to follow any democrat but it's a choice between a genuine republican a republican a democrat a close it will choose the genuine article every time it's time for democrats to stand up and be proud of what they've created over the last hundred years in america and to fight to defend these programs from this unprecedented attack
9:57 pm
against them by the republican party democrats may not win this debate but that's fine at least the american people will start realizing that one party is fighting for them again and if they keep doing it if they keep standing up for something and fighting like democrats then of that eventually the electoral victories will come as they did when harry truman took on the republican do nothing congress in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight and democrats took and held the majority in the house of representatives for the next forty six years harry truman laid out the message everybody heard it everybody got it but democrats held the congress for the next forty six years after truman said this. and the reason is that the people know the democratic party is the people's party and the republican party is the party of special interest. has been and always will be.
9:58 pm
it's time for democrats to wake up and remember that they are the party of the ninety nine percent and the republican party is and always has been the party of the one percent always has been and always will. that's the big picture for tonight for more information on the stories we covered visit our website to tom hartman dot com free speech dot org and archie dot com also check out our you tube channels the ranks of tom hartman dr this entire show is also available as a free video podcast on i tunes and we have a free time have an i phone i pad app in the app store it's on the speed back and twitter it's all mothers who are both facebook it's all members who are on our blogs message boards and telephone comment line at tom parker. no forget democracy begins when you get out there get active occupy something your it since.
