11:01 pm
welcome to the loner show where we get the real headlines with none of the mersey i can live in washington d.c. now it's not going to talk more about police tactics to occupy oakland as an iraq war veteran now remains in the hospital after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister or to speak to somebody who knows him and talk about why veterans are one of the groups that are hit hardest by this current recession but alas and his fairy and if this could be a turning point for the occupy movement as oakland occupiers seem to have won a tactical victory over the police last night and a number of large defense contractors released a doom and gloom report about the possible results of defense cuts they say that

one million jobs are going to be lost are they right we're going to have all that freedom and more getting a dose of happy hour but first take a look at what the mainstream media has decided to miss. i. want to see here there's a lot going on in america today real unemployment is over sixteen percent ten million homeowners are underwater and more to forty six million people are living in poverty and apparently third quarter growth for the economy was better than expected his numbers came out today but that still doesn't look like it's trickling down to average americans and their lot but the mainstream media they had a much much bigger story that they decided to spend hours on this morning. a stunning revelation from the wife of bernie madoff ruth made off claims that the couple tried to overdose ruth made off tells sixty minutes that she and her husband swallowed a handful of pills she says they popped the sleeping medication ambien and the

anti-anxiety drug clonopin at bed time and they expected never to wake up we just. kill ourselves because. it was so horrendous you put your mind back that was really a crazy time they were caught in a firestorm of whiskey something she'd never experience before she's talking about christmas eve two thousand and eight roughly a month after the revelation that her husband was behind the largest crime ponzi scheme in history. now says think about this for a moment is the fact that bernie made often his wife attempted suicide a sad thing yes absolutely but you know it's even sadder the fact of the man who ran the biggest ponzi scheme of all time actually financially ruined countless people in this country some of whom sadly succeeded in taking their own lives as a result i haven't really seen the media display the same amount of hurt the same emotions when it came to the made of the victims as they did of the story where his wife here decided to open up and in fact i'm kind of confused as to why this one
11:04 pm
story deserves hours of reporting but the iraq war veteran who's been in the hospital after being hit with a tear gas canister occupy oakland and who just today was upgraded to stable from critical condition why isn't he the one that's been on every single t.v. screen but then again who am i kidding right it's the mainstream media that we're talking about and this is a perfect example of who they choose to devote their coverage to now i'm going to go on a limb here say that before all this blew up the made office were probably a part of that one percent and sure people are going to tune into a sixty minutes interview to hear this story because audiences eat that kind of stuff up but leave it to sixty minutes leave it to that evening t.v. that's not the daily news you need to turn on in the morning the people who are occupying. he's all over the country and starting a populist movement that's the news the fact that our government easily bought justice for all gets thrown out the window and people are fighting back against that that's the real news sob story from bernie madoff's wife when they realize
11:05 pm
they'd be caught rescreen so many people over who trusted this man with their money they wanted to make it all go away suicide is terrible and sad like i said again but considering everything else that's going on in this country right now to millions of people looking back story i don't really think it compares but it's not my book but that's the mainstream media for you that is part of the establishment that kisses up to and follows the elites around like little puppies that will ignore popular movements are massive corporate funded enterprises and try to shield the eyes of their viewers from what's really going on around the country the one percent drama all the personal stories they're all over that the plight of everybody else that's what they choose to miss. more than two thousand people came out in oakland last night following two prior nights of arrests and tear gas and flash grenades being thrown by police at occupy oakland protesters on efforts to disperse the crowd and kick them out of franco
11:06 pm
gobble plaza but last night it looks as if the protesters want police back down to the thousands and let them take over that loss again and one of the tragic events that galvanized large numbers was the story of iraq war veteran scott olsen was hit in the head by a tear gas canister at close range leaving him critically wounded here's video of scott being carried out after he was initially hit. when it was. shot. but you do what you can. now today scott was upgraded from critical. stable condition but he still remains in the hospital already calls been made for the city's mayor to step down people across the country veterans abroad in war zones have all decided to join and call for solidarity to join this movement ask for more people around the country to
11:07 pm
really join up but you know this is one of the things too that shed light on the mainstream media the fact that it's overlooked so much of the coverage of the occupy movement or i guess what you can better explain as mockery of this movement as they've basically described them as a bunch of spoiled dirty hippies but now u.s. veterans are taking part because they've been a group that's been harder hit than the average population in this economy so on national official unemployment not counting the six stands at nine point one percent for post nine eleven veterans it's twelve point four and that's only expected to get worse so joining me to discuss this is matt howard a member of iraq veterans against the war mad i want to thank you so much for joining us tonight and i know that you you actually know scott so what's it like seeing somebody that you know who you know is now in this condition because of what happened with the police the other night. i think that we may have just lost scott we're going to try to we're going to try to get connection with him again just wait with this one moment but let's i said again he was upgraded today from critical to
11:08 pm
stable condition there have been a lot of friends of his relatives in the hospital they have been trying to update the crowds and this is something that everyone has gotten behind we've seen a lot of media figures all calling for the for mary jane kwan to step down but basically what she did today is she then did an about face after all of this happened and came out and said that from here on out the police are going to use minimal violence that she's going to try and keep an eye on that and in fact she said that she has now supports the occupy movement i think that we may have to we have that back. ok we're still waiting for matt here we're going to try to catch up with him and just a moment here and coming up next we're also going to talk to barry and to see if this could be some kind of a turning point for the movement's we're going to take a break real quick as we wait for matt so coming up next we'll talk to ana and then we're going to talk about the latest version of the protect ip act that's been released is just as bad as all the others some to give you the details on that as soon as you return.
11:09 pm
wealthy british style it's time to. go. to the. market. find out what's really happening to the global economy for a no holds barred look at the global financial headlines. there's a report on our. news today is once again flared up. these are the images the world has been seeing from the streets of canada. showing corporations rule the day.
11:10 pm
all right we're back we're talking about the case of scott olsen an iraq war veteran who was hit with a tear gas canister at close range occupy oakland and he's been in the hospital for the last couple of days and today he was upgraded from critical to a stable condition and so tonight we're speaking to matt howard a member of the iraq veterans against the war i want to thank you for joining us now i think hopefully everything set up and i know that you know scott so i just want to ask you you know how it feels to see somebody that you know in this type of condition after everything that transpired with police. it's pretty disturbing i found out this basically the morning after scott's injury and you saw something on facebook and realized indeed scott had been struck with a projectile and a broken skull now what do you think of the police tactics here because you know a lot of people are calling for the mare to resign you know and i think it's it's
11:11 pm
pretty discuss in proudly out of town that has washed their hands of that and that's i think that's pretty pretty ridiculous of at the end of the days she's the leader and the oakland p.d. these tactics that really kind of demonstrated by scott's injury to be just come to scott's team and really entirely too forceful. we don't that one hand as you said matt injury has shown a lie on the tactics of the police there but it's also i think showing people that there are also veterans right there are former marines iraq war veterans afghanistan and afghanistan veterans that are all part of this occupy movement so how important do you think that is to show to the country to the media to the critics out there that have been trying to you know just dispel this as a bunch of spoiled rich hippie kids that have nothing better to do. scully was
11:12 pm
a true tour veteran of the rot in the marine corps as i am also. i think that's ridiculous realistically scott was passionate about and so were activism along with you know the occupy movement and the true issues are really similar related. economic europe you know because they were dealing with the wars that were continuing to be and. you know unfortunately had to pay a really awful price now earlier in the show to i mentioned that the statistics if you look at unemployment in the united states you know unemployment rates are levels excuse me for veterans post nine eleven are also higher than it is for the national average of the twelve point four percent and you feel like that's something that is often you know that that's forgotten. yeah i think so unfortunately the military population that we have is less than one percent of the country as a result there's not a lot of interaction between you know big rest of america and military and veterans
11:13 pm
so our issues tend to be obscured the another scariest statistic is that the teacher of the day commits suicide in the united states that's released by the v.a. so there's a there's these mental wounds are really continuing because of the fact that we're in iraq and afghanistan it's hard to deny. that this wondering too because what we see is a lot of veterans a comeback in the current wars abroad a lot of them right now go into law enforcement or on these police forces and so do you feel like what does that do to the relationship to know that you have as brotherhood between you but that you're on opposite sides i guess you could say of what's going on where the battle lines are drawn here at home it's difficult i mean i think the realistically a lot of our population is suffering p.t.s.d. and the fact that they go into law enforcement encouraged to basically geisha and infant tactics only exacerbates that so i mean if it really sickly this is
11:14 pm
is it kind of a disturbing thing i think that all of this involved and. this is something that you know we're passionate about our viewers that we just kind of have to persist. and that tell me tell you about what you've seen in terms of the occupy movement down there i don't know if you've been occupy oakland but i know that you've been to occupy san francisco what do you make of the group and what's going on. you know i think it's a diverse group of people you've got people that have had there are homes foreclosed people that are unemployed people that are employed like scott what has been and gone to sleep done and then count meant the last two meets you've got a really big mix of people and i think that. obviously the characterization it's been bad there you know people that are unemployed when be employed even if the economy was better which is ridiculous and so why have you decided to go down there and you know to show your support. because i think it's really clear and present the issues that are ins and mainstream you know the main street america is dealing
11:15 pm
with are very similar the economic inequality that we're dealing with the corporate greed there really has led us to this place in terms of really high unemployment and a really drastic difference in inequality between the the richest the poorest is is you know it's high time that skews that and you think there needs to be more focus on an anti-war aspect in this movement in terms of how much money we spend you know when it comes to massive wesson weapon systems when it comes to waging war in iraq and afghanistan and libya and drone strikes in yemen somalia pakistan you know i think the people perhaps sometimes forget how stretched thin we are i think personally absolutely and i think the idea of you and peter as a general are kind of saying the same things the d.o.d.'s obviously the largest bureaucracy in our government and the second to that is the v.a. and the v.a.
11:16 pm
is essentially paying for the mental and physical costs of our veterans and that's ridiculous that's i mean in part why we're in this condition we spend entirely too much money on wars that we have no business being in in the first as those are costs that are only expected to rise as well as now that we're winding down the war in iraq and troops are going to be coming home at the end of the year now that afghanistan is trying to be white or starting to wind down they only expect unemployment rates for veterans to go that's going to be a tough slog ahead matt i want to thank you so much for joining us tonight thank you so much. so yesterday protesters occupy oakland seemed to win when police backed off and they took back franco plaza and then last night quine after numerous calls for her resignation made an about face and she released a statement saying that she now supports the occupy oakland protesters and that she's going to minimize police presence for the time being i think that all of the question as to whether or not the occupy movement is now beginning to reach
11:17 pm
a turning point no longer just a menacing force to be subdued but something to be taken seriously joining me from our studio in los angeles to discuss this is and co-host of the young turks and i want to thank you so much for joining us tonight and you know you and i have been speaking about this for weeks on end is essentially since the moment since the movement began talking about the developments and where it's going and so what do you think about what happened yesterday in oakland is this you know just a symbolic victory they won the day because the police went back because the crowds are so big and they let them take the plaza back or is that really something that could be a turning point where you know where it seems like cities are going to start reacting differently. i think that it was certainly symbolic and it could also be a turning point because of the fact that now we have you know iraq veterans afghanistan veterans participating in this movement you know there's been this misconception in the mainstream media and this misconception in the heads of
11:18 pm
critics that all of these occupy wall street protesters are just dirty hippies they don't really know what they're protesting about and you know people are very quick to disparage what's going on and occupy wall street but now all of a sudden we have american heroes taking part in these protests you know scott olsen went to iraq twice and he has fought for democracy in that country and it's symbolic that he's fighting for democracy in our own country now and to see what happened to him in that video footage i think spoke very loudly to a lot of people out there and i think inspired them when it comes to this movement so i do see it as a turning point because now you can't point to this movement and say that these people are just dirty hippies we have true soldiers and american heroes participating in it so if you're going to criticize that are you not supportive of the troops is that what the situation is you know when it came to the war in iraq and when people were outspoken against it supporters of the war would say well you've got to support our troops you've got to support our troops well in this case
11:19 pm
do you support the troops i think you should. yeah and i feel like the mainstream media specifically channels like fox news or maybe erin burnett over at c.n.n. they might be in a little bit of a pickle over this one right looking at the coverage today i haven't seen a whole lot being spoken being said about scott olsen being said about what happened in oakland so i'm just wondering if they think that they can ignore it and hope it goes away and everybody forgets about the way they mocked it or at some point are they going to have to apologize or really regret. i seriously don't see the mainstream media apologizing about their coverage especially fox news the only way that fox news would cover any aspect of this coverage is if there is a part of it that makes the protesters look like clouds if there's anything that indicates that the protesters are unintelligent or don't know what they're protesting about fox news will be all over it but when it comes to scott olsen you're absolutely correct they have not covered this story and the reason why they
11:20 pm
haven't covered the story is because they know that when you see police officers provoke such violence people get even more inspired and they get even more motivated to take part in this movement and that's against fox news's interest that's against corporate interests so i wouldn't be surprised at all if they continue to ignore the story and in the end don't even apologize for the lack of coverage they've provided of this movement now do you think to you know of course we're talking about the violence of the tactics by the police and one hand you could say that it really inspires people because unfortunately often that's what brings a lot of attention is when you have clashes between protesters and police and suddenly more cameras are there seven lee you see more pictures coming out but at the same time do you think that it's scaring more people away from actually wanting to go in and join because of what they've watched. i'm sure there are individuals that see this and it does scare them you know i was talking to a few of the r.t. producers about the video footage of scott olsen and it doesn't look like it's footage out of the united states it looks like it's footage from iraq. and when
11:21 pm
they had their protests i mean it's bloody it's violent and i'm sure a lot of people are scared of that but at the same time you know from what we've experienced in the past when police do incite violence when you do see these types of situations people get even more angry and they're more willing to you know join this movement and fight for what they believe in so police officers don't realize that when they do this they're being extremely counterproductive you know if government officials and police officials want to shut these people up this is not a good way to do it this is only going to bring more attention to the movement and more people are going to get involved and i think that's great by the way and you know our previous guest also who is a veteran we were discussing the fact that now you have a lot of veterans that are in law enforcement and there are police and you know it's really becoming a very tense situation there but i want to talk to you about you know demands right these are the things that the occupy wall street protesters don't have they don't have specific goals and so they have been
11:22 pm
a lot of critique over it but i think that joshua holland over from alter net made a very good point and i want to know if you agree with him he said that they've already achieved one victory and that's to shift the national conversation that's going on away from deficits and from the need to cut cut debt ceilings back over to jobs and what the problems are about average americans every single day that they face. you know joshua holland and elliott split spitzer on slate had mentioned that they believe the wall street protesters have already won because they've been able to shift the dollar the dialogue from deficit discussions to jobs wealth disparity the fact that corporations are buying our politicians issues that actually matter and you're seeing a shift in the mainstream media and they're finally covering topics although they're doing so in a very shallow superficial way they're finally covering topics that are important to the american people now i'm very hesitant to say that occupy wall street has already won because that sounds to bush asked to me i don't want to hang mission
11:23 pm
accomplished banner i really want to be careful with what we say when it in terms of achievements i will say that it's great that we've achieved that goal and that people are now finally focusing on issues that really matter to us however we are nowhere close to winning this war and we have to continue fighting so i want people to remain inspired because even though the dialogue has shifted we haven't seen any policies that are different you know politicians are still doing the same things in fact you know there's a fundraiser taking place tonight in winnetka illinois and it's for barack obama it's being held hosted i should say by a former goldman sachs employee his name is byron trott he worked for goldman sachs for twenty five years and it costs about thirty eight thousand dollars i'm sorry thirty six thousand dollars just to attend that fundraiser and it's all bankers investors people who are extremely wealthy the reason why i bring that up is because it just shows you these are the people that the politicians pay attention
11:24 pm
to i mean this money corrupts every single aspect of politics right so is brock obama going to listen to occupy wall street or is he going to listen to the people who are donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to his campaign i think the answer to that is very simple and you know we need to see changes in policy to prevent this from happening in the future i really have to be brought. because i was going to mention that next that meanwhile the president is holding a very fancy a very expensive fundraiser let me just ask you really quick how long do you think our media our public doesn't they're not known for having the longest attention spans right so how long does occupied this occupy movement have until the attention starts to fade away until they need to have perhaps a centralized figure or a leader. you know that's a really difficult question to answer the really great thing is that occupy wall street has been happening you know since september seventeenth and media coverage continues to increase on the movement and i think it's because more and more people
11:25 pm
are getting involved so hopefully this movement continues to gain traction it continues to get attention and the media won't be able to ignore it i mean how can you ignore an uprising in your own country it's impossible to do that so i think that so far the outlook is positive i think that the media is going to be forced to pay attention to it regardless of their short attention spans. i like you and i can say that it seems impossible to ignore an uprising in your own country but they really really try as hard as they can to do that but i don't think of they'll be able to succeed and i thank you so much for joining us tonight. thanks. all right now it's talk about the protect ip act something that we've covered extensively here on this show and it's about as alarming a piece of legislation is there is when it comes to your rights on the internet now the first version of this bill was approved by the senate judiciary committee back in may and in the senate version of the intellectual property protection the d.o.j. would utilize court orders to shut down any websites that are engaging in copyright
11:26 pm
infringement the bill also calls on internet service providers to block any incoming traffic to those offending websites so as you can imagine those that have been paying attention to the legislation have voiced their concerns a lot of people are saying that it gives the government far too much power to blacklist websites and that survived the once defunct notion of an internet death penalty and in fact a group of ninety law professors wrote a letter to congress calling this measure internet censorship a ban on first amendment rights and even they put it they put the u.s. government a step closer to aligning itself with oppressive regimes so now despite all of that criticism which we've heard before on the show now two members of the house of representatives are planning on introducing their own version of the protect ip act bob goodlatte and lamar smith version of the intellectual property legislation would include all the elements of the senate version but it has a few more disturbing additions so this new version will hold sites that host user
11:27 pm
generated content accountable for its users infringement now when i say sites the host user generated content i mean facebook twitter you tube basically any other site where users can get an account so it's bad enough legislation when they were trying to hold i a speech responsible but now they're trying to include web sites in that category and i would see group demand progress is characterize the inclusion of web sites as a potential violation of elements of the digital millennium copyright act a bill to protect p.s. and web sites from being held responsible for user contact content now there are two sides to the argument over the protect those the favor of it namely the ira and then p.a. and say that this bill would shut down for. and sites that sell counterfeit or pirated materials they also claim they would save us jobs by protecting them from cheaper foreign alternatives that people can pick up on light and as we've mentioned in the past supporters of an anti-piracy bills absolutely love to fearmonger the hell out of people especially when they come up with ads like this.
11:28 pm
now thankfully many people see through the flashy anti-piracy ads and bring up the larger issue at hand here is this bill a huge invasion of your first amendment rights monday a consumer electronics association sent a letter to congress asking them to hold off on signing this bill until they listen to all the concerns of opponents they also set the technology industry is leading america out of the recession and inadvertent damage to the tech sector could not happen at a worse time and i write if websites actually worried about every user those sites will inevitably shut down so who really benefits from this legislation other than hollywood i think it's really hard to say so let's just hope that the opposition speaks loud enough to prevent this house version from passing. now we're taking
11:29 pm
a break but after we will have show and tell and defense contractors or fear mongering about the economic consequences of defense cuts lawmakers are listening to this type of government spending not like the rest of the. culture is that so much good news or leave it to a lot of people a very early look at is it do you feel your leaders say we have a plan to cope with greece's sovereign debt problems and to build a firewall against italy's. and welcome back you're watching our live from of the heart of moscow. headlines the u.n. security council approves
