same brutality different location today a nasty tune out of music city as police in nashville arrested does it occupy wall street supporters but it doesn't stop there america's finest city experiencing some not so fine behavior with san diego police in riot gear pepper spraying peaceful protesters we will bring you the very latest on the occupy wall street please. and how that movement grows marines and military personnel band together the support of their injured brothers startles that and occupy wall street as a whole so with those who fight abroad heading to the front lines at home will anything change we talk to iraq war veteran sergeant shamar tom. and she's a symbol of the american dream and today lady liberty turns one hundred twenty five years old but with mass protest economic inequality and deportations skyrocketing
4:01 pm
how the statue of liberty reached her statue of liberty limitations well debate. it's friday october twenty eighth four pm in washington d.c. and christine for sound and watching our team well it is day forty two of the occupy wall street protests and it has become very clear this week but this has become a nationwide movement. this is video from nashville tennessee very early this morning protesters have been occupying a legislative plaza for about three weeks now they were told they would need to evacuate by last night but those who stayed were removed from the area by police who least site concerns about safety after reports of fights fast and disruptions from homeless people. occupiers they please intentionally stop patrolling the area
4:02 pm
once camp was set up leading to the increase in crime and now just san diego california you can see police making an arrest here as other protesters stood their ground you know more than forty people were arrested and we're also told officers confiscated all personal belongings as well the supplies and food that had been donated to the protesters was video also taken very early this morning. this week of course marked by the situation in oakland california iraq war veteran scott olsen who you see standing here he is fully protesting well moments after this video was taken he was severely injured you can see him there on the gurney being carried out taken to a hospital with a fractured skull this of course sent shock waves throughout the world and in particular through the military veterans community as well as the occupy movements we also have some video from last night in oakland california more than
4:03 pm
a thousand people came out with candles and signs holding vigil in honor of scott olsen we're told by the way his condition has been upgraded from critical to fair but he will need brain surgery hospital officials say scott is awake and aware but unable to talk since the injuries he sustained are near the speech center of his brain two tours in iraq and it's oakland california where scott olsen is badly injured it's a reality again that has really outraged so many people including military veterans in this country and one in particular you remember you may remember this video that we showed you last week. the you didn't mention. the it. this is sergeant mark thomas and yelling at police officers in new york about their treatment of protesters now this video was taken before scott olsen was injured and it went viral on you tube with literally millions of hits i did speak
4:04 pm
to the man in that video just a little bit ago sergeant jim our thomas he gave me his reaction to this turn of events you know. my initial reaction especially the video that i had was why rule was shock and disbelief scott olsen is you know a patriot in this country and he you know decided to go out and stand up for the people that he chose to protect and so to see that you know the police had no disregard for him or his uniform was shocking you know unbelievable so interesting too he was wearing a veterans for peace t. shirt at the time that this happened i know that your reaction is not unique a lot of people just simply outraged when they saw these pictures come down i want to play some video from a couple nights ago in new york when news of what happened in oakland the raid came down these are some pictures of occupy wall street protesters in new york just a couple nights ago
4:05 pm
the protesters showing solidarity with what happened in oakland i think. we're seeing your head in this video actually as well i'm pretty sure you were down there just tell us a little bit about what that was like so many people in the street looks like there are police officers there as well what was the mood i just a couple nights ago there in on off by wall street in new york. well the mood out there was you know one of shock and disbelief of what happened in oakland and then it turned into you know pride and solidarity we initially started the peaceful protests just walking in the streets and. somebody was slid off the curb and you know put a foot into the street the police you know i saw a man get pushed down just for you know step and you know one foot off the curb and
4:06 pm
so you know approach as it decided that they would peacefully march through the streets you know you know cheney i mean you know these are our streets because you know effect the streets and the police you know really going hard to. stop what we're trying to do peacefully and trying to you know i feel like they were trying to incite violence and psychos to you know be disorderly but everybody kept it peaceful nobody you know did any sort of violent acts toward the police but in my twenty five years on this earth i was one of the greatest things that i've ever been a part of i'm so. pleased with the people who are out there with the way they protested the way he acted the way they carried themselves. scott olsen is an american hero and you know that march you know signified how you know we feel about the people of oakley in. patients across the world do you think that this well will
4:07 pm
change anything shamar i mean certainly occupy wall street the movements have been going on for much more than a month now but certainly this week there's a different feel india there's a different mood yet from people that we interviewed people that we talked to about this what do you think will change if anything on the ground where you are in new york. well that's as far as what will change this is a progressive movement what happens is. the media that is the wall of mainstream news you know put out a lot of different images and a lot of different you know soundbites of what's really going on what they really think what they say is really going on but as far as they go the american people is on the catcher and we're all about then this is this is about is not enough incentive america that a hard working better you know good citizens that go to you know go to work every day come home and take care of their kids this is this is about the america that we all know and love was people you know start seeing you know the kind of people that
4:08 pm
are really out there once the media stars are training it for what it really is i think that more people will come out and support and you know we just have to you know get this country back on track and you know get it back to where it needs to be i think it's so interesting when you talk about the america that we all know in law there are so many people both here in washington and in the mainstream media on those cable networks people who are constantly talking about loving the country supporting the troops wanting to be resilient in afghanistan in iraq wanting to just support the military in so many ways a lot of times it's so interesting these are the same people who are also saying pretty crazy things about the occupy wall street protesters calling them unpatriotic telling them they don't love freedom they don't love this country what do you think about those two very in my mind different opinions coming from the same people. i think they just don't understand what is going on i think you
4:09 pm
know even before i went to war for the first time the media coverage was you know that we smoke and hippies and you know these are people who who are not resilient who don't want to work in things that at nature but both my parents served in military i served in the military college educated people i don't understand how you can go to college to serve in the military or be a fly a slider or you know being a local you know because for us to work at and not be considered resilient so you know we have a lot of people out there who are from all walks of life but the media portrays it as one life and so that's why the opinions of who is down and what's going on is different from you know place the place but i would be you know be the first one and tell you that we are we are resilient and that's what we are we're fighting for the people no matter you know if they believe in us and at the end of the day if we're successful then we're all we will all live well and you know credit needs to
4:10 pm
be given to the occupy a few foreigners who out there twenty four hours a day seven days a week you know you know the freedom of this country and we should mention to scott olsen that injured veteran from oakland was protesting but he is somebody who has a job in addition to having served two tours in iraq if you don't mind started talking and i can put up a photo this is a picture of jay gen feel that we have this is a former sergeant with the u.s. marine corps we spoke to him yesterday and he was just in shock and he's holding a picture of scott olsen he's also holding a sign that says you did this to my brother i know this picture really elicited a lot of response including comments from other veterans and one of them really sticks out to me it says i think it was aimed at police it says you have awoken the big dogs marines we need you military personnel we need you to stand up i'm wondering if this continues if there's more police brutality that we see do you
4:11 pm
expect that former military will come out and sort of act as a security force do you think they should and what are your thoughts about that. well i encourage all the military members that are veterans you know i don't really you know want active duty to you know leave their post because you know i don't i don't want you know to jeopardize their careers but i do believe that all veterans you know have a responsibility to protect these people because we you know like myself and scott we fought in foreign lands for you know. you know the idea of peace and that we were there to be you know to ensure freedom in our way of life in america and so to come back to america and not you know stand up for the people that are here the people that you fought for you know it is an injustice to yourself and you know which of values are i want also to tell another side of the story this week we also saw in albania new york the governor of new york the mayor of albany asked the
4:12 pm
state and local police to enforce a curfew there and police officers actually defied their orders they said you know what these protesters are being peaceful we don't want to start any riot and they actually defied orders want to get your reaction to that and if you think you know that's something that we're going to see more and more because of what we've seen coming out of new york city coming out. well first of all i must say that is you know i applaud those men and women throughout the who allowed those peaceful protesters to peacefully protest. you know that's what we need more in this country because you know the police have to understand that they're applauded and not enough is sent in and that we all look up to them we all you know happen put our trust in the police officers to protect us on a daily basis regardless of how they feel about you know who we are as far as agenda what we're there for what we're doing as long as we're peaceful you know they need to understand that you know that's their job to protect it that's why you know little kids want to be police officers and firefighters when they go because
4:13 pm
you know it's about serving the community and i would hope that everybody you know take that as an example that you know we we have to come together this is about all of us this is about it's not about you know the college students it's not about the non the five workers it's not about anybody else but the whole collective unit as america as americans and you know as a as a global nature global world as well thank you my comic want to thank you so much for joining us today thank you iraq veteran also occupy wall street protests are joining us from new york. and protesters hoping to shed light on a system they call unfair are succeeding in part with certainly more discussion in the public eye about the inequality gap on the campaign finance system many protesters say the country is on the wrong track though and they've also started discussions about the extent to which so many feel imprisoned and about how freedom is no longer a given in this country i want to dig deeper into this notion as today is the one
4:14 pm
hundred twenty fifth anniversary of the commemoration of the statue of liberty and it was of course a gift from france to mark the friendship between the two countries but all lady liberty is also a symbol of freedom and opportunity and a country that calls itself the land of the free and the home of the brave i'm joined now by two of those free and brave men think mali president of less government and jesse lee graca an activist with the occupy wall street movement who is making his way around to several movements around the country right now thanks so much guys for being here and i'm going to start with a very simple question is america still a free country worse and worse with obamacare neutrality. the administration's conduct but by and large it is still a free country it was founded on the principles of limited government. less regulation those taxes less burdensome intrusion of the government in people's lives we're getting more and more away from the tea party movement is into fixing
4:15 pm
it and returning us to a constitutional republic status. but a lot of think if you opened up all the borders ninety percent of the population in the world would be here because of your thoughts on you know i do agree with you on the point of our ability to express our freedoms i think that what i thought and is trashing our freedoms are there's no way you would for instance net neutrality i'm a writer on a website if you were to get rid of. their power to govern the internet over to providers like arisan agency to go along. with this. no problem with present day if you were to take that and give them more power than they already have many more were asking to keep a status quo i'd rather not give the government rather that i'd rather not give the government more power this isn't seen in egypt of the scene in syria as we've seen in china as we've seen in north korea it's not the corporator problem go to.
4:16 pm
his point my point being is that if we were to change the system that the internet is governed right now if we were to do anything about it we would fundamentally change the entire way in a way that someone as myself who is not backed by corporate interests who doesn't have big powerful people watch my back my voice will get silence so i'm a strong supporter of net neutrality because i would also argue it's the same so it's the same because little of the world wants to limit. let's say they want to. say they want to let me finish my question if they want to sounds my voice they can drive down the user should my traffic by limiting my ability to have easy webs of those laws exist to do that yes by the way we get rid of noise right i didn't realize you're adding new was it would net neutrality right now you've been blogging unimpeded without neutrality so by that get it will or there is no net neutrality will you if you have that system there are so many religions now neutrality there you don't understand where you are and like the article on sunday go ahead let's make this discussion a little less specific a little more pride and i want to put up an interesting map we found that shows the
4:17 pm
distribution of wealth in this country this shows that if land in this country was distributed the same way that wealth it would look like that's the one percent owning a whole lot of it and at ninety percent as you seem at the bottom of that country owning very little jesse this seems to me one of the realities that people are protesting occupy wall street and it's not just in new york around the country what do you think officials like best and what they are saying you know my grandfather used to say never live alone as was trying to figure and i think when you use these graphs it paints a very clear picture. you know i keep some people i'm not against capitalism i'm against crime and what we have right now is an unjust system that exploits human resources natural resources i mean literally the fact is that since the one nine hundred eighty s. wages have been totally stagnant while all the while general in this country has gone to the wealthiest people in the system and the trickle down that we've been promised for thirty years has not taken place so i feel that we need to try a different track to give people the same opportunities are enjoyed by those who
4:18 pm
are given those opportunities on their own income as jesse says numbers don't necessarily lie i mean do you at least understand why some people are upset as they continue to see your serious their onerous misguided mr acted as government grows the gap between wealth and poor poor grows because if you increase regulation if you create increased taxes the rich are already rich and it doesn't hurt them if you took every penny bill gates need this year in taxes it wouldn't hurt him he'd still be rich but the people who are trying to become rich are woefully impeded by that all these additional regulations are impediments so new business start ups so new so rich people can absorb those business costs so people who are trying to grow their businesses cannot so as government grows and it has grown exponentially over the last thirty years it was a girl of your lot of the decisions that government has made it was the decision to extend the bush tax cuts when you do that and you know not adding new taxes but
4:19 pm
extending tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. job creators mating with a cult meeting with a rate of under the last few years of bush however that has resulted in ralphie people getting much out of their ellerey money they earned earlier money must marry more money or there are more not a lot less of the other. their money did what about all the people who were earning their money we're going to jobs and these large corporations the c.e.o.'s of which are earning more and more money are cutting people's jobs they're laying off workers but what about the community. welcome to what capitalists or someone said other people do get another job retrain themselves don't don't tell me i really don't sit in leisure i grow up in a car going to grab her single story of three brothers my best friend was a union iron worker an economy class in two thousand and eight he was not able to find a job so he did exactly what you would suggest he retrain themselves into this new economy and study to be urgency a technician emerged to work even though he missed his girlfriend is
4:20 pm
a professional as well she works there now you so you have a two income household now my best friend who saves people's lives in the image thirteen dollars an hour they are struggling to figure out what they can afford this month rent or food now for a capitalistic system is working and regular what it's like out of the system i consider a corporate assistance and i don't give a lot of favors to multinational corporations cronies so that all the math obama that oh you guys like a vendor out there again and then i think you understand that word i mean to say that it's socialism right now is the tracks of an honest conversation i'm trying to get is socialism in what regards because that word it could very well be word yeah ok you guys use it an honest man i think you guys use that if you're taking money from people who are going to say redistribute it to people who don't but the little things that i'm sure you have going on when president obama and it's insulting to them are not a how they're going to get to them they didn't know about education or about our wars right here you're basically saying if we tax people to fund these wars i'm a tax i was the wars you're talking about it we're having the wars never less so let's just you know and that late with this is the first time in american history
4:21 pm
that we've had we're fair and cut taxes the same time that's created a massive deficit no it doesn't have that we can spend what i was we spent less on both wars but the entire length of the war that we've been talking about obviously have a status as a reserve it's our passwords or numbers don't lie the numbers don't lie but let's be honest health care versus ten years of record war you really can't compare the two so she says no you're already going because if you weigh the class that the bill has even been implemented medicare bit last cycle they could make it work but many conservatives have taken this as an overreach of government i would i don't have health insurance where because if you. well we were encouraged to go forward into. didn't george washington ordered that every able bodied and purchase firearms during working with the revolutionary war the likes of me and that was that it was that i mean those critical issues for your constitutional washington i think he supported a mandate and everybody left he was only going to do what else we're seeing and he's massively waterfronts the country that's even movement that you are visiting and taking part of the us occupy wall street movement what is it that you and other
4:22 pm
people out there are fighting for i believe this is a foe for economic justice i believe it's a fight for social justice the reality is i don't want to take away the ability from people who have those successes i don't want to take that away but so many millions of people are being denied he has to share in a sacrifice for a disaster that they did not create and they're being denied these opportunities that we were promised i mean a lot of this argument is about broken promises that we were promised or security the same our grandparents had a government failure a government failure really you guys throw that word allowed around i'm not sure those are security private lives my mother is going to be receiving source curity if you're telling me that she's participating in a party scheme i would rather go to bed now my mother in law about a new mother a bad mother in social security i think a lot of really needs are non-disabled out about the consequence of he's a wall street no one ever mentioned a lot of the way to see on social security and out of social security i think a lot of people who receive social security not only now not your mother in the future but what about all these people the past few decades would disagree with you
4:23 pm
that it's a failure it works the money though it is related so yes it's true dollars and it could be friends it goes in there even the people that are also not working are not out on the street a large. area where you want to hundred percent sure i was hardly for elderly americans has died does anyone time since nine hundred fifty where they have ninety percent tax rates on the wealthy is not present when the smallest gap of income inequality i mean we look at it let's say we went back to the tax rates are actually socialist reagan social security enterprises can you get one point two percent or you and i have an honest debate it's a one time or it's very. you have a lot more examples of your present right now and it's going to go underwater about so you turn it off for one k. because there are people swirling he's turned into a tool of one who want to heloise rehashes their money disappear the government's question right now it's up to you through the dollars and has never played let me bring in our know who says neary and interesting thing you know we talk about occupy wall street the way it's been covered by the media everyone seems to be
4:24 pm
covering it in different ways a lot of the mainstream media having their own opinions about people like you jesse i'm sorry you know you've been called a thirty hippie un-american unpatriotic but i want to show something that a station in portland oregon put out this is the n.b.c. affiliate crime statistics that occupy wall street stinky people two hundred fifty angry people four hundred fifty not angry people to hand over falling toilets three i should mention the news director there apologized and said that this was a mistake that it wasn't supposed to be shown what do you think about that jesse to me that shows just exactly the narrative that we hear i mean let's be honest millions upon millions of people are suffering and what are we shrieking about deficits where's the jobs commission and i can see it on the streets of those petri who are conservative that it's very frustrating to me that they are derogatory against any government program but then when it's time to ask where the jobs are they know exactly who to scream at so let's discuss the fact that wall street everything's government or at what point do you guys ever blame a private industry for anything you really want to do is to kill you and one
4:25 pm
industry that's detrimental to america's future right now same one police and more than one any one industry any one of a big business government so i have noticed problem andrew breitbart for instance as well as they call big government is rather straightforward oftentimes they don't have a website called big banks they don't have a website called big health insurance we're big industrial complex i mean literally this the freshman to blame the government on every single thing is an attack on the manifestation of our democracy because what is that are going to resort to public i hear that argument a lot of us all the millions of voters very early. what's new limits in media stats thirty one percent of the occupy wall street people think violence is ok to do so there's a wide where i've actually research dogs shown as i was younger people two hundred people which are millions of americans are judged by two hundred people who participated in occupy was terry students founder of occupy wall street speak or quote violence will be necessary to achieve our goals occupy wall street post-process are saying yes the usa and he didn't agree v.a. there anti jewish chants and chicago if you want to bring up
4:26 pm
a jewish chance please put over twenty four hundred i post your questions over twenty four hundred occupy wall street is that since it's fact it's are you are well i am. taking to over the life you put one youtube videos the only four hundred millions of people are racist you can't win on these guys are for your daughter and i am twenty two i'm ugly you live twenty four there are girl i see what you thought it was all there was to be will get arrested around the world the crime of as for some more than seventy years the rest of you have locking with your thumb good guys are the liberty people over one hundred thirty year residency probably does it though some of those stats there were seven hundred people arrested on the brooklyn bridge many of them we spoke i was interviewed they said that police actually escorted them and i was there and as far as using violence and thirty percent think i just can't believe that number because i was shown as a democrat told you so many and all the people participate in that poll it's on line you can find it two hundred people participate in that poll out of occupy wall street discouraging sexual assault victims from even attacking police police are you getting this very well i don't know what i have we have all these are all going
4:27 pm
so you don't have it for you do i don't have a computer in front of me. it's hard it's hard to call the side out because i know that's what you have been to several of the movements you've seen differently but certainly we have seen one or two or five people yelling at racist lance and saying it's the laughs we're going stuff or the rabbit or is it that that's what this is going to be ok or your absence of the role in the whole movement can't be touched by it so sad when that way that we're out of time so that we judge the tea party very quickly i was just feeling back out thanks so much for coming. molly president of less government always an interesting discussion here i don't porton one we should mention that needs to be had i want to thank you guys so much for joining me we are out of time you can follow me on twitter i'm out frowsy i'm sure to stay with us right here on our t.v. or unless there is up next with capital account.
