oh i'm tom marvin in washington d.c. and here's what's coming up tonight on the big picture protesters in zuccotti park are being bombarded by an unwelcome group who occupy ors the homeless and drug addicts it barely come courtesy of any p.d. so is this true and if so one of the tactics will be york's finest using the term of the moment the movement and the people's choice and voice finally be heard in the grease. economic turmoil prime minister george papandreou says he will not pay off the bank's tears crashes country without
9:01 pm
a national referendum so how are the banks going to respond to this. you need to know this occupy nashville patriots got a boost from the courts yesterday as a federal judge struck down a law passed last week aimed at shutting down the occupation of the new ten pm curfew after a weekend of ongoing police raids and mass arrests as the result of this new law u.s. district judge alito trotter put a stop to the crackdowns ruling yesterday that the state of tennessee could no longer enforce the law after the ruling a legal director of the tennessee a.c.l.u. trisha hertzfeld said the state cannot arbitrarily create restrictive policies just because it does not like people using a public space that is decision is the first step in restoring demonstrators free

speech rights so while the occupation nashville is set to continue the occupation in new york city is dealing with some headaches even though the n.y.p.d. has decided not to raids. the park ground zero the occupy wall street movement it is doing its best to frustrate the occupation right into a report from the new york daily news police officers are encouraging the homeless and the drunks who take their business to zuccotti park and this flood of shady or figures is starting to have an effect on the movement more and more free loaders and dangerous elements floating around the occupation tensions are reportedly growing in what has been a peaceful demonstration for nearly a month and a half and then there's what's going on in occupy oakland or a citywide general strike is planned for tomorrow yesterday i call occupy oakland held a press conference to talk about their plans for the strike. in this general strike did not come from be. affiliated.
9:03 pm
from grass roots organized to look you want me to tell you. is very important and it's just that you shouldn't as they this this is good news it really. what it will take to bill ford for general strike because the only working people give you kind of concessions in this country is when they hear them as immobilized in their own name and i want to conclude with this from the former slate. do you really think that. concedes to nothing without a demand. and you never will. the city of oakland is telling business to deadbolt their doors preparation for the strike and already the oakland school for the arts has announced plans to be closed tomorrow if indeed the strike takes
9:04 pm
off it will be the first general strike in the in a major american city since one thousand nine hundred six for more on this and what else is going on with that i nine percent open across america i'm joined from new york by jay myers occupier and contributor to truthout and alter net jay welcome hi tom good to be back thank you for joining us what do you make of this report by the new york daily news that officers are pushing the homeless and drunk to zuccotti park. well it makes perfect sense i mean we saw what happened when brookfield and bloomberg tried to evict the park publicly right the all of the affinity groups in the city that are sympathetic to the aims of occupy wall street mobilized their people and sent thousands of people at six in the morning to zuccotti park to link hands in defiance and so it became clear that occupy wall street was in effect too big to fail right it couldn't be without exacting too big a political toll on the bloomberg administration so now it has to resort to subterfuge i just want to make it clear that homeless folks and drug dealers or
9:05 pm
drug users rather are not especially shady characters right these are victims of an uncaring society that doesn't provide help for people in their position and a lot of them find that they can get help it's a part they can get warm clothes a place to sleep and things like that it would be awesome if one of the effects of this movement were to create pockets in major american cities of radicalized and eloquent homeless and drug user populations that would be really really great the issue now is that bloomberg and those guys are trying to. send these folks in in order to be hostile in order to shake up the park which is officially nonviolent so the question before the occupiers at wall street is how to maintain a commitment to nonviolence and still maintain some sort of law and order which is a concept that for the last few millennia has required the threat of violence for its successful pursuit. at least on one side i mean there was no threat of violence
9:06 pm
from martin luther king. right of course like that what i'm saying is that in order to get people to follow the law the people whose job it is to uphold the law the authorities have had to exert the threat of violence right by way of police and beyond and so the people in zuccotti park who have set up this free open democratic society and want everyone to be a part of it and are peaceful and peace loving have to figure out how to maintain order right how to make sure that the people for instance working in the kitchen are not harassed by hostile agents without resorting to violence without physically kicking people out of the parks it is that this was the challenge of the civil rights movement as well though and i'm sure of probably every movement prior to that this decision in nashville in the national there was this court decision where the judge said sorry national you can't just like make rules that a bridge people's first member rights of freedom to peaceably assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances is going to ripple across the nation with
9:07 pm
other courts supporting the rights of the ninety nine percent movement or is it going to hit some you know bush appointee or maybe even the supreme court just go up in flames and maybe take part of a little more of the first minute with it. it's tough to say i mean i'm no judicial scholar but i sure hope that it sets a precedent that has a rippling effect i mean that the fact is that for instance the city council of new york all of those folks and many of whom are people of good conscience have sworn an oath to uphold a document that expressly prohibits government abridging the right of the people peaceably to assemble and so when they see acts like police subterfuge and let's remember this is a country where police subterfuges the bombings in haymarket and put newton on crack which killed him ultimately. these folks need to stand up and condemn this sort of action from the police and say that you know these folks that have a right peaceably to assemble and that has to be respected by the authorities in
9:08 pm
fact it has to be protected by the authorities by sworn oath the oakland police department. to the police department's website or the the union's website i don't recall which i read it this afternoon had a statement from the police to the citizens of oakland in today saying basically a we just did with the marriage told us to do be take it up with her see we really don't like being in this position stuck in the middle and be she's like kind of talking out of both sides of her mouth saying she supports the strike but she told us to go break up the strike but she's going to have the strike but not the strike what are your thoughts on the occupy oakland general strike care worker similar actions being planned elsewhere. i hope it can work i mean it's difficult to say what it would mean for it to work out what ideally what would happen is that somebody in the authorities in oakland would be held to account jean quan is perfectly welcome to say that it wasn't her choice she was in washington somebody else called the violent raid that you know put in iraq war vet in critical
9:09 pm
condition with a shot to the face but in that case whoever called that shot needs to get fired and so far there's been no accountability for this horrible violent raid that they conducted on peacefully protesting civilians in oakland so it's difficult to say i think the general strike is is wonderful i hope it can work i know that the longshoremen are supporting it and that's a big port town oakland is primarily what it what it was and it's as a as it rose as a city and there's going to be solidarity all around the country i know that in zuccotti park is going to be a big march and a big rally in support of our brothers and sisters in oakland best of luck to them indeed just a half a minute what's the next step for for as a crowded parking for the. well to consolidate our organization right we've got the attention of the public we've got their sympathies and now it's time to really really organize and the general assembly just passed a spokes council which i urge everybody to go online and look up it's
9:10 pm
a brand new addition to the structure of occupy wall street and hopefully it will ease our communication and coordination and lead to so really impressive political organizing on the part of the occupy wall street movement jay myers thanks so much for being with islam. thank you tom yesterday we saw more evidence that occupy wall street is working as big banks around the nation decided to ditch their plans to impose a five dollars monthly debit card fee sun trust and regions bank both came out on monday to announce of their any their debit credit card feet policy also wall street giants j.p. morgan chase and wells fargo announced that they will be moving ahead with new debit card fee plans at all and now bank of america which started the outrage over debit debit card feeds he's decided today to drop their fees with the occupy movement in the streets banks are thinking twice about how they treat their customers.
9:11 pm
it's time for a daily poll your chance to tell us what you think here's the days russian the house g.o.p. wanted to vote actually did vote today on in god we trust becoming the official motto of the nation so is the house ever going to get around to voting on jobs your choices are yes republicans won't continue to ignore the jobs crisis or no this bill like the anti-abortion legislation defunding n.p.r. legislation passed earlier and i create a single job log on to tom hartman dot com and tell us what you think the poll be open until tomorrow morning. coming up did republicans get a mandate in the last election to ignore jobs and the economy and instead give welfare to exxon mobil criminalize abortion put us all under god go after n.p.r. and make it harder for american citizens to vote really. drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions
9:12 pm
9:13 pm
for the first time in the greek debt fiasco it may be up to the greek people to decide their fate it's days after global investors and banks toure's breathed a sigh of relief when european leaders agreed on a rescue package to bail out greece and prevent a global financial crisis greek prime minister george papandreou threw a wrench in the banker's plans since the banks to bail out the second of its kind are required greece to raise taxes on working people slash government spending and lay off tens of thousands of government workers measures that have already unsubtle the streets of athens over the past year prime minister knows that he will not accept the banks to his terms without his people having a chance to vote on it themselves they call for a national referendum on the bailout sent shock waves across europe this morning global markets and in the greek parliament itself calls for bob and drew to step down and at least one member of his ruling party quitting european leaders and
9:14 pm
financial giants are now struggling to prevent any sort of vote on the bailout and ensure the greece gets the money it needs to pay off the banks' triggers so how all those play out and what is exactly the choice that the people of greece may be facing i'll get to get the details of that in just a moment but first what role did goldman sachs and american bank play in triggering this whole greek does. ask your scenario for an answer to that question independent investigative journalist greg powers joins me now from central africa is the author of the book vultures picnic in pursuit of petroleum pigs power pirates and finance carnivores greg welcome back. glad to be with you from. the heart of darkness from africa to washington. it's very important i'm glad you brought this up greece exploded but people should know that it was cool. that lit the fuse so how do you go because of. ok to join the euro currency
9:15 pm
greece's right wing government secretly hired goldman sachs to come up with a scheme to hire it's massive to hide its massive deficit you can't be in the euro if your deficit is more than three percent of g.d.p. the right think government has screwed things up badly so the higher goalkeeping in your opinion dollars jim oh it's just completely secret to come up with a way through seizing financial derivatives to completely flimflam the world markets the other governments and european central bank using massive. and when it was uncovered by the new socialist government when they came in and exposed the holders of the securities to the greeks which they didn't have fought it they just live while they don't the stuff they demanded all kinds of that was knee high interest as you can well imagine and so the greek economy has to has completely
9:16 pm
imploded trying to pay off its incredible extra interest surcharge which came from goldman sachs running a scam. to greece which which ran the government didn't run the funds with goldman sachs a scheme and they walked away you know with their half million do you dollars you know i'm scaife as they as they seem to do in every situation including the one where they almost took down this country greg greg palast thanks for your great investigative work we'll talk again soon you're very welcome tom thank you greg for more on what's ahead for greece i'm joined from our new york studio by professor kostis pontiacs to professor please correct my pronunciation if it's wrong associate professor of sociology of the new york city college of technology at suny and author of the forthcoming book remaking sphericity from capitalist inefficiency to economic democracy professor welcome. thank you for.
9:17 pm
thank you could you tell me how to say your name please. ok talk to us if this does indeed come down to a vote choice to the greek people have. well it's. what the greek government is trying to do right now is it's trying to cling to power because these are spirit people programs that have accompanied the rescue packages have not been working and this is why greece needs a second rescue package it's after the first rescue pockets eighteen months ago or so the greek government has lost support from the population he's losing support even from people within the socialist party its base that trade unionists even the deputies saw they this is a bit of a of a gimmick they feel that they are very weak and they need
9:18 pm
a new kind of lead zip in the sea for pursuing these destructive policies and they know that if they were to call for an election they would be trance all the polls show that so what they're trying to do is basically blackmail greek people and tell them you know either you vote in favor of our policies and we'll stay in europe in the into the euro zone or you vote against it we go bankrupt and weak of to basically leave the euro zone and you know this government has not been able to produce any solution to the crisis it's making are the policies that it's adopting and that are being imposed by the european union in the i.m.f. or do making the crisis. warse and worse and this is why it has for a long time been now resorting to this kind of from a practical fear well wouldn't it actually be to greece's benefit it was paul
9:19 pm
krugman who piece on this today several economists have weighed in suggesting that if greece just said ok screwed out of the euro we're out of the e.u. we're going to go or we're going to go back to the drachma we're going to go our own way there'd be short term pain but long term they get their country back. well i think there is a debate on this issue even among. people who are opposed to the some austerity measures i mean there is one side but that makes the argument you just mentioned there is another side that says that you know the discussion of getting out of europe would go basically to. the banking sector people getting their money owed to italy goes negative commentary. it's so it's so so what effect would so personal do you think that there actually will be a vote on it was this. a hollow threat or a or a gimmick on public or is this part or is there actually going to be
9:20 pm
a vote like there was in iceland because in iceland elite actually had two votes the first one i think was ninety four percent the second one was in the seventy's where the people said no screw the banks or we're not going to pay him back. well the first aid is there is. a vote of confidence for for the government on friday and the socialists have a razor theme my not in majority being the party greek parliament and the reason it's razor thin is because they've lost many of their deputies over the last few years because with the successive was very good programs that went against the platform of the socialist party two years ago many of the socialists. have basically. left so i think the first page is to see whether you know the government immediately survives this crisis and then what happens after that i mean
9:21 pm
the discussion there is the possible date that it's being mentioned he's saying yuri and that's a long time away and there would be. a lot of volatility in the meantime now there is also or the greek prime minister and the finance minister will be going to the g. twenty meeting and perhaps they will be subject to pressure from. leading countries to sort of reconsider or methods so the situation is you know really in flux and it's impossible to predict down what exactly you will happen it's going to be a very very interesting to watch professor thank you so much for being with us tonight. thank you thanks a prime minister popular is curveball the stock market today here in the u.s. plunged two hundred ninety four points but the european sovereign debt crisis is just one problem dragging down our our economy it's also the current jobs crisis
9:22 pm
and don't expect republicans the house to do much about it at least not today instead of voting on any portion of president obama's american jobs act or any other legislation to put americans back to work as republicans voted to ensure that in god we trust remains the official national motto as you know no one was trying to change the national not a bill passed and it's just like the anti-abortion legislation passed the week before and the defunding n.p.r. legislation passed earlier in the year will not create a single job. single job republicans who have controlled the house since january so what do they have to show for it here to defend the republican job killing economy crashing agenda is george landreth president of frontiers of freedom george welcome both of us could be with you i'm guessing you wouldn't characterize it that way but if you know what what kind of mandate do different public really have a mandate to attack abortion reaffirm the national motto go after n.p.r. and planned parenthood of it i don't recall any of those issues being raised in
9:23 pm
election two thousand. i wouldn't disagree with that but i don't think that's a characterization that's accurate of what they've done in the last year they actually have fifteen bills actually more than have been at least fifteen that are job bills they're sitting the senate waiting for a vote some of them are actually things that obama expressed some support for one of them. one of them but and it is then it's not acting you can have the democratically controlled but you know the vast majority of them the rest of them have to are you know are variations on let's give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires i don't think so i think a lot of them have to do with things like energy independence they have to do with looking at a regulatory system and trying to figure out how we can make it both environmentally . friendly and job was another one was that it was. you know i just find it astounding that you guys call these things jobs bill when none of them were leads and the irony of anybody what they lead to is less regulations on the koch brothers and lower taxes on the koch brothers who seem to own
9:24 pm
a half the republican politicians in this town well i think the reality is if you look at rock obama's jobs bill it's not going to create jobs either what it basically is doing is a lot granting a lot of money to states and localities the hire people for one year so you have a temporary one year but next year there won't be those jobs because the government can't forever decide to hire everyone's policemen and teachers around the country and and those have bigger debt so it seems to me we actually need to do some things that create a fertile ground for employment i mean as i see it the government can actually create new jobs well it can do is create a climate in which new jobs can be created so so when the when the government hires police officers are so that'll be permanent because i just described they hire foreign fighters there they want to be permanent jobs the government doesn't hire the city so so those people who back you know i mean do they have they have money in their pockets they buy things and then the next leader of the those those local people the local communities their local businesses to provide them with those needs that i mean how do you think we got out of the great depression. and world
9:25 pm
war two for only a massive jobs program massive jobs. grow our two was three times larger than than the cost of the of the great new deal. that's fine so i say you're suggesting we do massive jobs but now i'm not because i think the reality is if you look at the if you look at lots of what was done during during the great depression the it was made worse by the government actually has taken place how could i suppose that made it worse for you want from a twenty eight percent unemployment rate or thirty thirty four percent unemployment by some measures down to what was a sixteen percent i think thirty six had a double dip and there actually a trend thirty seven when when when roosevelt went along with the republicans and dial back the program absolutely there was a there was one before that that's what i was that that was the third. impression the point i think it. as government won't create jobs right now we don't have money to pump into we're already fourteen trillion in debt we can't send a couple trillion more out to the states the horrible thirty years of reaganomics has left us devastated i get it you know the republican plans you could ultimately
9:26 pm
have destroyers had been to what reagan borrowed three trillion dollars george herbert walker bush borrowed another trillion and a half dollars is son borrowed five and a half trillion dollars i don't see a lot about last year i have about three and exactly and by the way three trillion dollars was a hell of a lot of money oh i guess we can argue that but i think if you look at obama's own paste outstretch anybody is a spender i mean it's funny that he ran saying he was in the cut spending isn't go through the budget line by line and right now the most important thing congress and the white house can do is balance the budget as we have in the heart of what can this is a republican states with three hundred to four hundred thousand people in those states and at the at the federal level we've lost about three hundred thousand employees these are actual jobs government can hire hire people and those jobs and those people have pay in their pocket and that creates demand demand is what drives economies unless you're unless you're still going with the supply side nonsense that you wouldn't came up with seventy six is that what i'm going with is the concept that i'd like to have permanent jobs not
9:27 pm
a one year blip so that after the election this piece of them or you will you join me in calling for it and to our participation after getting the b.t.o. go back to the trade policies we had for two hundred years not necessarily i think that there i would i would argue that the reason why i agree we have some trade problems but i don't think that the problems created by now after a gap i think that steve jobs and he's actually look i'm not quoting republican here he said that it's easy business in china than here we've made we've never it's not this is cheaper it should be well there's a difference because we did away with our tariffs there's a lot of transactions we're out of time thanks for thanks i appreciate. even though they haven't created a single job republicans in the house and work hard to preserve their individual wealth as well as the wealth of their corporate donor for example there's an analysis by roll call magazine the found the net worth of congressmen members members of congress is up twenty five percent over the last year that's pretty
9:28 pm
amazing one year twenty five percent of congress in total are worth is two billion dollars so what these folks have been doing is basically protecting tax cuts for themselves and pushing for pet projects meanwhile the big thaw will corporations so far have made over one hundred billion dollars billion dollars being a thousand a million exxon mobil shelby p. conoco phillips and chevron these companies have made over one hundred billion dollars so far this year and yet gas is still three fifty a gallon. start of that picture well ronald reagan stopping force in the sherman antitrust act all these corporations just got together and you know hundreds of companies became five companies in virtually every industry and we wonder why the country seems to be locked up instead republicans have been blocking attempts to cut off taxpayer subsidies to the oil companies the congress has done basically nothing about golden parachutes for c.e.o.'s right now are on track to make more than fifty million bucks what is what what has happened here in the united states
9:29 pm
is that we are frankly turning into a topless we're turning into a form of government where where the the the people who own the economy and have a greatest amount of money are able to then own the politicians and are able to then have the politicians pass laws and rules which hand more money off to those people who own the economy so you have the oil companies for example taking their three or four million dollars billion dollars in in welfare payments each and then recycling that money back in a campaign contributions to their wholly owned politician subsidiaries and then you know using that money to basically jack up our gets prices this is a corrupt ocracy we've got to get money out of government moved to amend or. coming up is it just smoke and mirrors behind the man lighting it up in herman cain's campaign video why his campaign manager is leaving a controversial trail of the.
