oh i'm tom martin in washington d.c. and here's what's coming up tonight on the big picture protesters in zuccotti park are being bombarded by an unwelcome group occupiers the homeless and drug addicts apparently come courtesy of any p.d. this is true and if so what are the tactics will the new york's finest used to deter them all the movement and the people's choice and voice finally be heard in the reese. economic turmoil prime minister george. says he will not pay off the bank's tears crashes country without

a national referendum so how are the banks toure's going to respond to the show. you need to know this occupy nashville patriots got a boost from the courts yesterday as a federal judge struck down a law passed last week aimed at shutting down the occupation with a new ten pm curfew after a weekend of ongoing police raids and mass arrests as the result of this new law u.s. district judge alito trotter put a stop to the crackdowns ruling yesterday that the state of tennessee could no longer and force the law after the ruling the legal director of the tennessee a.c.l.u. trisha hertzfeld said the state cannot arbitrarily create restrictive policies just because it does not like how people are using a public space that is decision is the first step restoring demonstrators free

speech rights so while the occupation nashville is such a continue the occupation in new york city is dealing with some headaches even though the n.y.p.d. has decided not to raids. park ground zero the occupy wall street movement it is doing its best to frustrate the occupation put into a report from the new york daily news police officers are encouraging the homeless and the drunks and take their business does a college park and this flood of shady or figures is starting to have an effect on the movement more and more free loaders and dangerous elements floating around the occupation tensions are reportedly growing in what has been a peaceful demonstration for nearly a month and a half and then there's what's going on in occupy oakland where a citywide general strike is planned for tomorrow yesterday i occupy oakland held a press conference to talk about their plans for the strike. the folks in this general strike did not come from the. affiliated.
11:03 pm
grass roots we're going to. be ok look at this. tell you. always a very important and it's just that kazan as they this this good news it good try really. what it will take to bill ford for general strike because the only time working people give you kind of concessions in this country is when they want to mess it mobilized in their own name and i want to be cute with this quote from the flawlessly. the listeners. can see the spin nothing without a demand. and it never will. the city of oakland is telling business to deadbolt their doors preparation for the strike and already the oakland school for the arts has announced plans to be closed tomorrow if the need the strike takes
11:04 pm
off it will be the first general strike in the in a major american city since nine hundred forty six for more on this what else is going on with that and nine percent open across america i'm joined from new york by jay myers occupier and contributor to truthout and alter net jay welcome. time going to be back thank you for joining us what do you make of this report by the new york daily news that officers are pushing the homeless and drunk which is a copy. well it makes perfect sense i mean we saw what happened when brookfield and bloomberg tried to evict the park publicly right to all of the affinity groups in the city that are sympathetic to the aims of occupy wall street mobilize their people and sent thousands of people at six in the morning to zuccotti park to live in cannes in defiance and so it became clear that occupy wall street was in effect too big to fail right it couldn't be even without exacting too big a political toll on the bloomberg administration so now it has to resort to subterfuge i just want to make it clear that homeless folks and drug dealers or
11:05 pm
drug users rather are not especially shady characters right these are victims of an uncaring society that doesn't provide help for people in their position and a lot of them find that they can get help it's a part they can get warm clothes a place to sleep and things like that it would be awesome if one of the effects of this movement were to create pockets in major american cities of radicalized and eloquent homeless and drug user populations that would be really really great the issue now is that bloomberg and those guys are trying to. send these folks in in order to be hostile in order to shake up the park which is officially nonviolent so the question before the occupiers of wall street is how to maintain a commitment to nonviolence and still maintain some sort of law and order which is a concept that for the last few millennia has required the threat of violence for its successful pursuit. at least on one side i mean there was no threat of violence
11:06 pm
from martin luther king person. right of course like that the what i'm saying is that in order to get people to follow the law the people whose job it is to uphold the law of the authorities have had to exert the threat of violence right by way of police and beyond and so the people in zuccotti park who have set up this free open democratic society and want everyone to be a part of it and are peaceful and peace loving have to figure out how to maintain order right how to make sure that the people for instance working in the kitchen are not harassed by hostile agents without resorting to violence without physically kicking people out of the park to do that this was the challenge of the civil rights movement as well the and i'm sure of probably every movement prior to that this decision in nashville in the national there was this court decision where the judge said sorry national you can't just like make rules that are bridge people's first member rights of freedom to peaceably assemble and petition their government for redress of grievances this is going to ripple across the nation with other
11:07 pm
courts supporting the rights of the ninety nine percent movement or is it going to hit some you know bush appointee or maybe even the supreme court just go up in flames and maybe take part a little more of the first with it. it's tough to say i mean i'm no judicial scholar but i sure hope that it sets a precedent that has a rippling effect i mean the fact is that for instance the city council of new york all of those folks and many of whom are people of good conscience have sworn an oath to uphold a document that expressly prohibits government abridging the right of the people peaceably to assemble and so when they see acts like police subterfuge and let's remember this is a country where police subterfuges the bombings in haymarket and put huey newton on crack which killed him ultimately. these folks need to stand up and condemn this sort of action from the police and say that you know these folks that zuccotti park have a right peaceably to assemble and that has to be respected by the authorities in
11:08 pm
fact it has to be protected by the authorities by sworn oath the oakland police department. to the police department's website or the the union's web site i don't recall which i read it this afternoon had a statement from the police to the citizens of oakland in today saying basically a we just did with the marriage told us to do be take it up with her see we really don't like being in this position stuck in the middle and d. she's like kind of talking out of both sides of her mouth saying she supports the strike but she told us to go break up the straight but she's going to have to strike but not the strike what are your thoughts on the occupy oakland general strike care workers so our actions being planned elsewhere. i hope it can work i mean it's difficult to say what it would mean for it to work out what ideally what would happen is that somebody in the authorities in oakland would be held to account jean klein is perfectly welcome to say that it wasn't her choice she was in washington somebody else called the violent raid that you know put in iraq war vet
11:09 pm
in critical condition with a shot to the face but in that case whoever called that shot needs to get fired and so far there's been no accountability for this horrible violent raid that they conducted on peacefully protesting civilians in oakland so it's difficult to say i think the general strike is is wonderful i hope it can work i know that the longshoremen are supporting it and it's a big port town oakland is primarily what it what it was and it's as a as it rose as a city and there's going to be solidarity all around the country i know that in zuccotti park there's going to be a big march and a big rally in support of our brothers and sisters in oakland so best of luck to them indeed just a half a minute what's the next step for for as a crowded parking for the occupy movement well to consolidate our organization right we've got the attention of the public we've got their sympathies and now it's time to really really organize and the general assembly just passed a spokes council which i urge everybody to go online and look up it's a brand new addition to the structure of occupy wall street and hopefully it will
11:10 pm
ease our communication and coordination and lead to some really impressive political organizing on the part of the occupy wall street movement jay myers thanks so much for being with islam. thank you tony yesterday we saw more evidence that i.q. by wall street is working as big banks around the nation decided to ditch their plans to impose a five dollars monthly debit card fee sun trust and regions bank both came out on monday to announce that there any need to have a credit card fee policy also wall street giants j.p. morgan chase and wells fargo announced that they will be moving ahead with new debit card fee plans at all and now bank of america which stores would be outrage over debit debit card feeds he's decided today to drop their feeds but the occupy movement in the streets banks are thinking twice about how they treat their customers.
11:11 pm
it's time for a daily poll your chance to tell us what you think here's the day's question the house g.o.p. water the boat actually did vote today on in god we trust becoming the official motto of the nation so is the house ever going to get around to voting on jobs your choices are yes republicans will continue to ignore the jobs crisis or no this bill like the anti-abortion legislation defunding n.p.r. legislation passed earlier when i create a single job was going to tell harvard dot com and tell us what you think the poll would be open until tomorrow brings. coming up did republicans get a mandate in the last election to ignore jobs and the economy and instead give welfare to exxon mobil criminalize abortion put us all under god go after n.p.r. and make it harder for american citizens to vote really. drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions it's
11:12 pm
11:13 pm
for the first time in the greek debt fiasco it may be up to the greek people to decide their fate just days after global investors and banks toure's breathed a sigh of relief when european leaders agreed on a rescue package to bail out greece and prevent a global financial crisis greek prime minister george papandreou threw a wrench in the banker's plans since the banks are bailout the second of its kind or require greece to raise taxes on working people slash government spending and lay off tens of thousands of government workers measures that have already unsubtle the streets of athens over the past year prime minister probably knows that he will not accept the bank's toure's terms without his people having a chance to vote on it themselves they call for a national referendum on the bailouts and shock waves across europe this morning global markets and in the greek parliament itself calls for public drew to step down and at least one member of his ruling party quitting european leaders and
11:14 pm
financial giants are now struggling to prevent any sort of vote on the bailout and ensure the greece gets the money it needs to pay off the banks' triggers so how will all this play out and what is exactly the choice that the people of greece may be facing i'll get to get the details of that in just a moment of first what role that goldman sachs and american bank play in triggering this whole greek does. ask your scenario for an answer to that question independent investigative journalist greg powers joins me now from central africa is the author of the book monsters picnic in pursuit of petroleum power pirates and i finance carnivores greg welcome back. glad to be with you from the times in the heart of darkness from africa to washington. period toward not glad you brought greece exploded but people should know that it was cool. that lit the fuse so how do you go that really it was nasty. ok to join the euro currency
11:15 pm
greece's right wing government secretly hired goldman sachs to come up with a scheme to hire it's massive to hide its massive deficit you can't be in the euro if your deficit is more than three percent g.d.p. the writing greek government had screwed things up badly so the higher call containing your ability in dollars fifteen dollars just completely secret to come up with a way through using financial derivatives to completely flimflam the group markets the other governments and european central bank looting imagine it's a fraud and when it was uncovered i did new socialist government when they came in and they exposed the holders of the securities of a greek spirit which is they've been defrauded they just went wild they dumped the stuff even and all kinds of people see high interest as you can well imagine and the greek economy had to pay has completely imploded trying to pay off its
11:16 pm
incredible extra interest surcharge which came from goldman sachs running a scam. to greece which which ran the government the deficit and the puns this goldman sachs a scheme and they walked away you know with their half billion dollars you know unscathed as they seem to do in every situation including the one where they almost have found this country greg greg palast thanks for your great investigative work we'll talk again soon very welcome tom thank thank you greg for more on what's ahead for greece i'm joined from our new york studio by professor custis on iraq to professor please correct my pronunciation if it's wrong associate professor of sociology the new york city college of technology and sony and author of the forthcoming book remaking scarcity from capitalist inefficiency to economic democracy professor welcome. thank you for. being able to be with
11:17 pm
you thank you could you tell me how to say your name please. titus if this does indeed come down to a vote choice to the greek people have. well it's. what the greek government is trying to do right now is it's trying to cling to power because these asperity programs that have accompanied the rescue packages have not been working and this is why greece needs a second rescue package after the first rescue eighteen months ago so the greek government has lost support from the general population it is losing support even from people within the socialist party its base the trade unionists even the deputies saw they this is a bit of a gimmick they feel that they are very weak and they need the new kind of lead
11:18 pm
zippin monsieur for pursuing this destructive policies and they know that if they were to call for an election they would be trans told the polls show that so what they're trying to do is basically blackmail greek people and tell them you know either you vote in favor of our policies and we'll stay in europe in the into the euro zone or you vote against it we go bankrupt and we have to basically leave the euro zone and you know this government has not been able to produce any solution to the crisis it's making are the policies that it's adopting and that are being imposed by the european union in the i.m.f. or the making the crisis. warse and worse and this is why it has for a long time been resorting to this kind of. practical fear what would it actually be to greece's benefit really was paul krugman had
11:19 pm
a piece on this today several economists and weighed in suggesting if greece just said ok screwed out of the euro we're out of the e.u. we're going to go our we're going to go back to the drachma we're going to go our own way it would be a short term pain but long term they get their country back. well i think there is a debate though on this issue even among our. people who are opposed to peace. measures i mean there is one side the makes the argument you just mentioned there is another side that says that you know the discussion of getting out of europe would go basically with. their of the banking sector people taking their money owed to italy goes next country you know it's so it's so so what effect would so first of all do you think that there actually will be a vote on me was this. a hollow threat or a or a gimmick and partner is this part or is there actually going to be
11:20 pm
a vote like there was an ice them because in iceland really actually had two votes the first one i think was ninety four percent the second one was in the seventy's where the people said no screw the bankers we're not going to pan back. well the first aid is there is. a vote of confidence for for the government on friday and the socialists have a razor thin majority in the proper greek parliament and the reason it's razor thin is because they've lost many of their deputies over the last few years because with all the success in from a study programs that went against the plot from of the socialist party years ago many of those socialist deputies have basically. left so i think the first stage is to see whether you know the government immediately survives this crisis and then what happens after that i mean the discussion there is the possible debate
11:21 pm
that is being mansion ease and that's a long time away and there would be. a lot of volatility in the meantime now there is also or the greek prime minister and the finance minister will be going to the d. printing meeting and perhaps they will be subject to pressure from. various leading pantries to sort of reconsider ords us the methods so the situation is you know really in flux and it's impossible to predict them what will happen it's going to be a very very interesting to watch professor thank you so much for being with us tonight. thank you thanks to prime minister papa drusus curveball the stock market today here in the u.s. launched two hundred ninety four points but the european sovereign debt crisis is just one problem dragging down our current our economy it's also the current jobs crisis and don't expect republicans the house to do much about it at least not
11:22 pm
today instead of voting on any portion of president obama's american jobs act or any other legislation to get americans back to work house republicans voted to ensure that in god we trust remains the official national. that's even though no one was trying to change the national model bill passed and it just like the anti-abortion legislation passed the week before and the defunding n.p.r. legislation passed earlier in the year will not create a single job. single job public and so you control the house and january they have to show for your defend the republican job killing economy crash an agenda is george landreth president of frontiers of freedom george welcome welcome with will be with you i'm guessing you wouldn't characterize it that way but if you know what what kind of mandate to do republicans really have a mandate to attack abortion and reaffirm the national motto go after n.p.r. and planned parenthood a bit i don't recall any of those issues being raised in the election doesn't. i
11:23 pm
wouldn't disagree with that but i don't think that's a characterization that's accurate of what they've done in the last year they actually have fifteen bills actually more than i mean at least fifteen that are job bills they're sitting in the senate waiting for a vote some of them are actually things that express some support for one of them. one of them but and it is senate sort out there you cannot say the democratic is going to roll but you know the vast majority of them the rest of them have to you know are variations on let's give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires i don't think so i think a lot of them have to do with things like energy independence they have to do with looking at a regulatory system and trying to figure out how we can make it both environmentally . unli and job front let's not have one most of the others. you know i just find it astounding the egos call these things jobs bill one when none of them were lead to the ira know anybody what they believe to is less regulations on the koch brothers and lower taxes on the koch brothers who seem to own
11:24 pm
a half the republican politicians in this town well i think the reality is if you look at barack obama's jobs bill it's not going to create jobs either what it basically is doing is block granting a lot of money to states and localities to hire people for one year so you have a temporary one year bump but next year there won't be those jobs because the government can't forever decide that hire everyone's policemen and teachers around the country and and then we have bigger debt so it seems to me we actually need to do some things that create a fertile ground for employment i mean as i see it the government can actually create new jobs what it can do is create a climate and which new jobs can be created so so when the when the government hires police officers are currently are pretty dry so those will be permanent because as i just described when they hire foreign fighters there they want to permit jobs the government doesn't hire those be so so those people who macular i mean really they have they have money in their pockets they buy things and the next day there are going to get those those local people the local communities start local businesses to provide them with those needs that that i mean how do you think we've got a great depression. and world war two for only so massive jobs program massive jobs
11:25 pm
. were to was three times larger than the cost of the of the great the new deal. that's fine so you're suggesting we do massive jobs but no i'm not because i think the reality is if you look at the if you look at lots of what was done during during the great depression the it was made worse by the government action was taken place how could i suppose have been made worse to have from you want from a twenty eight percent unemployment rate or a thirty thirty four percent of measures to what was a sixteen percent i think thirty six even had a double dip and they're actually trying thirty seven when one when roosevelt went on with the republicans and dial back the program absolutely there was a there was one before that was the third on that on the depression the point i think is. his government won't create jobs right now we don't have money to pump into we're ready fourteen trillion in debt we can't send a couple trillion more out to the states the right to thirty years of reaganomics has left us devastated i get it you know the the republican plan to control one of the rehabs destroyers had been to what reagan borrowed three trillion dollars
11:26 pm
george herbert walker bush for another trillion and a half dollars his son borrowed five and a half trillion dollars i don't see a lot about a year and a half. million is that right and by the way three trillion dollars was a hell of a lot of money. i guess we can argue that but i think if you look at barack obama's own base the outstretched anybody is a spender i mean it's funny that he ran saying he was going to cut spending even go through the budget line by line and right now the most important thing congress and the white house can do is balance the budget as we have in the hollywood and republican states three hundred to four hundred thousand people in those states and at the at the federal level would last about three hundred thousand employees these are actual jobs government can hire hire people and those jobs and those people who pay in their pocket in the back creates demand demand is what drives economies unless you're unless you're still going with the supply side nonsense that you're going to came up with seventy six is what i'm going with is the concept that i'd like to have permanent jobs not
11:27 pm
a one year blip so that after the election this piece of it or you know you join me in calling for it and to our participation after you get to the b.t.o. go back to the to the trade policies we had for two hundred years not necessarily i think that there i would i would argue that the reason why i agree we have some trade problems but i don't think that the problems created by now after a gap i think that steve jobs he's actually look i'm not quoting republican here he said that it's easy business in china than here we've made we've. it's not this is cheaper well there's a different because we did away with our tariffs there's a lot of transaction with george we're out of time thanks for a great thanks for your shit and dry. even though they haven't created a single job republicans in the house have worked hard to preserve their individual wealth as well as the wealth of their corporate donor for example there's an analysis by roll call magazine that found the net worth of congressmen members members of congress is up twenty five percent over the last year that's pretty amazing one year twenty five percent of congress until now worth is two billion
11:28 pm
dollars so what these folks have been doing is basically protecting tax cuts for themselves and pushing for pet projects meanwhile the big five will corporations so far have made over one hundred billion dollars billion dollars being a thousand million axon mobile shelled b.p. conoco phillips and chevron these five companies have made over one hundred billion dollars so far this year and yet gas is still three fifty a gallon. what's wrong with that picture well ronald reagan stopping force in the sherman antitrust act corporations just got together and you know hundreds of companies became five companies in virtually every industry and we wonder why the country seems to be locked up instead republicans have been blocking attempts to cut off taxpayer subsidies to the oil companies. congress has done basically nothing about golden parachutes for c.e.o.'s right now are on track to make more than a fifty million bucks what is what has happened here in the united states is that
11:29 pm
we are frankly turning into a club talkers where people are turning into a form of government where where the the people who own the economy and have the greatest amount of money are able to then own the politicians and are able to then have the politicians pass laws and rules which stand more money off of those people who own the economy so you have the oil companies for example taking a three or four million dollar billion dollars in in welfare payments each and then recycling that money back in the campaign contributions to their wholly owned politician subsidiaries and then you know using that money to basically jack up our gas prices this is a corrupt ocracy we've got to get money out of government moved to amend or. coming up is it just smoke and mirrors behind the man lighting it up in herman cain's campaign video why his campaign manager is leading a controversy all trail of dirt after the.
