governing coalition after narrowly winning a crucial confidence vote in parliament but the country's future remains far from clear tonight the main opposition parties demanded snap elections it wants george perpetrator out of the government r.t. sarah firth reports from the greek capital. there's a lot of confusion about what that coalition government is going to look like that we still have is the publisher and his governments and by that called insulation in parliaments in the early hours of the morning it was very very close it was always going to be it was the weight of the decisions but no changes really everyone still waiting to see what the details of this will fade and as we said before the devil really is in the details and so a lot of uncertainty still remains about was going to happen now moving forward and help guide us a bit see this political quagmire i'm joined by you because carlos a professor of economics at athens university. it's very uncertain what's going to happen now can you tell us a bit more about what the politicians are doing and with
1:02 pm
a lot of people saying that playing political games can they afford to do that is such a critical point the big picture is not what happened in greece is what happened yes the g twenty when they couldn't agree on anything so not agreeing on anything means that austerity packages will continue as the only policy coming out of the euro zone the pressure on the republic titian's of the central issue center right because of the stereotype measures is that the leader of the right wing party wants quick elections so he could do well and not be implicated in any of the austerity packages we've had so far were i scrap and drove a leader of the center left party doesn't want quick elections because he's deeply implicated in these policies and wants a national government a government of national unity so that the responsibility for the austerity package is shared with if you will only say or there is one missing actor in this and that is the people of greece who have been demonstrating for the last six months from

the street and really i see no solution that doesn't at least meet some of their demands for the your stereotype a recession more austerity measures vicious cycle being removed somehow. tented and political leaders actually addressing the social needs of the mass of people in this country and indeed of european peace that really is a very valid point what a lot of people are talking about here today is that is the missing ingredient that public opinion here very very disappointed at the announcement yesterday at what we seen playing out in the last week as he said that message of uncertainty at a time when what everyone was taking for was a unified front to some decisive action and that's not what we're seeing it's all in of course moving forward the situation looking on increasingly unstable ground. because i've heard all this before of let's talk to patrick young when bit more about this greek crisis he's executive director of the investment advisory firm dva
1:04 pm
advisors in london there's a bit of a deja vu here isn't a patrick but let's bring it up to date the greek pm struggling this weekend to form a new government of national unity where does that leave greece and the eurozone at the moment. look the whole situation we have here is a pole little disaster area i realize we're talking about economics but the problem is as we've been hearing the greek politicians have decided to have an overall political argument and that's basically holding the rest of the euro zone around some this week we've had trying very very hard to sort of renegotiate in some way shape or form with the e.u. and the euro zone stood for why because again it's politics mrs merkel can't afford to spend any more money or she won't get reelected mr sarkozy he needs to get results and he's just had a complete disaster of the g twenty meeting where he promised so much and failed to deliver anything and therefore greece is now hanging on the end of
1:05 pm
a read more or less dying go over a cliff it's going to go bankrupt and it's probably going to take the euro zone with us with it and that really is a tragedy clever despite all this wrangling despite all this wrangling we why is the focus on saving greece rather than objecting it from the single currency do you know kevin i have no idea whatsoever i think the umbilical cord should be cut with greece immediately i mean we've been talking about this for weeks ultimately greece itself is incapable of staying within the kind of austerity regime that the euro zone wants to force it into and i actually think for the rest of the euro zone it would be a lot better to throw out the rawest member of the night club at the moment and therefore hopefully everybody else will get back to their drinks and they will sit around and they will behave like good corporate citizens and acutely that means obviously italy because this is a big festering sore the problem of the italian government and its complete so far
1:06 pm
inability to manage to get its house in order exactly those ten year bonds reach six point four percent just earlier on the last week i mean how long can italy hold on what's going to happen to italy. well i think the situation is that it looks to me as if it's going to end up going straight into the hands of the i.m.f. i mean we've heard a lot of discussion that around the fringes of the g. twenty meeting yesterday in cannes the woods discussion going on where basically the i.m.f. was saying that they would be willing to lend money but again we have this terrible problem they're called politicians we don't have any leaders we only have politicians who are trying to see if their own jobs in a new year of high unemployment and therefore we're not actually getting the sort of leadership that will push the world forward isn't it ironic that the small countries of europe places like for example are still near they've taken their medicine they've been the people that actually injected austerity change their economies are wrong and they're not going to be the paragons of virtue in the european union going forward once we've actually managed to bankrupt all of the

major economies like greece italy and perhaps even space and so forth i bet you wish to go this program and sell you something positive about the euro but i'm going to ask you what is your prognosis this weekend with these latest developments going on everything is out there in greece what you've just said about it it's only will we know. look kevin it's a tragedy i mean really i would love to come here and give an optimistic message but i said before if the euro zone doesn't get its act together the euro could be dead by the end of november and on fortunately i have to stick by that prognosis we've had another amazing chorus which looked like the end of the opera don giovanni where everybody has sung great arias about how the world would be good and nice and yesterday the opera stage was in town but nothing has happened there is no leadership everybody is rushing to try and get themselves reelected particularly mr sarkozy but even mr obama as well and ultimately this is going to implode and it's going to have terrible impacts for all of europe but i will say one thing to try to
1:08 pm
at least give us an optimistic note there will be deal of ridging that will impact eastern europe all the way across to russia but ultimately i'm still very bullish on those economies because i think they have incredible growth opportunities and there is an ingenuity to the people they got through communism they're going to get through this banking crisis and that's certainly for me still the place to invest but unfortunately anything west looks very very sick in the executive director of investment advisory firm dva advisors thank you for being on the program from london tonight thank you. there are a wide spread good serves that us police are becoming increasingly heavy handed in breaking up the corporate occupy protests of the group the country for nearly two months now officers use force to disperse a demo in the u.s. capitol and take tents three activists was struck by a car then but the driver wasn't charged and in the california city of oakland police unleashed tear gas and bats on protesters and arrested more than one hundred

steal your car from your driveway and you can't drive your son to work you know that there are ways there are ways to fight back here in russia are massive election campaigns now in full swing with seven parties competing for seats in the duma that's the country's lower house of parliament. until december the third to woo voters with on a. t.v. and print media. reports of the race so far. thirty days old t.v. sets in russia will be talking politics politics and politics in other words. labor the rule of the people and socialism of freedom solidarity and justice our free centuries the most story going on his party which stands for the poor and for russians. so is on our banners future is with us banners agitating for the top political parties ahead of the december vote have been out

for a while but the most cherished cake free t.v. and radio air has just been sliced seven parties are in the running for the duma seats and while the country's main political force the united russia party is only concerned by how big a majority they'll be getting this time many are there is a desperate to just make it into the parliament and the race is on a staunch communists are appealing to saudi. dollar communists haven't lied a single time in one hundred years we save the country from fascism in world war two we twice save the country from collapsing we were the first in space with. liberal democrats are yet again appealing to nationalism but. the russian president should be the sole ruler in the caucuses we have to eliminate the clan culture in this region and introduce curfews in some areas video surveillance is

1:19 pm
going to block at the end of the route shouldn't recent through other more reliable channels do you think though. well it's really important to know that there are flotillas are not about delivering aid to gaza or aid to palestine in general because the palestinian people aren't asking for aid and handouts the problem that we have here is a humanitarian crisis but it is it is one that has been created by deliberate israeli policy so we need to change that policy so that palestinians are allowed to lead a normal life i didn't if i had life and not have to live on handouts now the situation in gaza is that one point five million people who live in an open air prison and as a result of deliberate israeli policy have been reduced to needing handouts eighty percent of the population now of gaza is food aid dependent and that's a problem but it is a political problem and therefore these flotillas are going to challenge that policy of this inhumane blockade it's not enough to deliver aid and that's
1:20 pm
certainly not what the people want we need to change the policy that are leaving palestinians in need of aid and of course one of those goes all the diplomacy continues a lot of it later this month the u.n. is set to vote is not on palestinian statehood but will the u.s. is going to use its veto whether it succeeds or not what effect is that up location process going to have of the situation in the region do you think. well the fact of the palestinians have decided to take the situation to the un and shows that over the past twenty years that have been a complete failure by lateral negotiations with israel palestinians have been told to sit down with israel and negotiate with the us being a broker but a very honest broker and in those twenty years that we have been trying to talk to israel the situation of the palestinians have become much worse with the expansion of settlements more destruction and confiscation of land our young men and women are in in israeli prisons in the thousands and so no progress has been made and
1:21 pm
palestinians have said no we need to come out of this and take our situation back to the international community we want to reactivate international law and therefore we want these other countries to become involved the u.s. is threatening to use its veto yes and it just shows what a bankrupt policy the united states has had visit the peace in the middle east we hope that other countries will take a much more. honest and legal stance but it's not about palestinian statehood and this should be. clear in that it's more about palestinian rights and going to the united nations as a way of the palestinian leadership saying that the rights of the palestinian people. that this mechanism we will have more avenues by which to hold israel responsible for continued violation of palestinian rights and that is something that should be supported by all because in the end all of these different countries
1:22 pm
are part of the united system the united nations that is supposed to maintain world peace and defend people's human rights but it seems that no action is taken in violation of palestinian human rights occurs and palestinians are looking for avenues by which to hold israel accountable and as a as you noted i am an active this is human rights activists and even believe that when formal institutions sale when are. governments fail to take what we believe is the moral and just position that we have to take action and through our action we hope to put pressure on governments to sentient israel to make israel do what israel and it has if that doesn't happen if israel will not will not abide by international law and order while you're on the line with us i want to ask you something else as well another news learn that came out earlier on this week because you next go admitting palestine is a major coup for palestine as it goes through this battle to seek recognition as you're outlining the but will publish the really achieve anything practical with its membership. well i i think it will first of all it will give palestinians more
1:23 pm
of a say in this organization that is so important in protecting a cultural. big cultural history and cultural. institutions and developing this all over the world at the same time it will give palestinians membership into other u.n. organizations which are also important and through these individual memberships we hope that it will also lead to acceptance for example of palestine in the international criminal court allow palestine to to ratify the rome statute and also make it able to use the international criminal court as another venue by which to hold israel accountable but these are all mechanisms again to try to hold israel accountable and not allow israel to be members of all of these different u.n. bodies while it continues to oppress the palestinian people it is the fact of this
1:24 pm
kind of de facto legitimacy that all of these different countries give israel and that israel is allowed to be a member that allows it to continue oppressing the palestinian people and when israel is held to task when it is actually sanctioned for its policies that's when it might start to listen and so policy in membership in these various organizations will we hope will strengthen the palestinian ability to to achieve that accountability very clear in order for publishing an american activist talking to us from ramallah tomorrow on r t thank you. i think. we bring up to date some of the news from around the world start in nigeria there are a series of bomb and gun attacks has left at least sixty seven killed and more than one hundred injured you sold in the time of the damage to lasted more than an hour hit several targets including the local police precinct and several churches the radical muslim sect boko haram claimed responsibility for the attack and its promised more strikes in the future two on friday the same group also attacked

protest movement grips the u.s. for a second month opinions are divided over some of it saying was one of them is a tax hike for richard americans who demonstrators blame for the economic downturn the half this has been on the streets of new york to see if the people there agree . the general public has been vilifying the very rich lately so what does the public consider too much money this week let's talk about that margin a million too much money yeah if someone has more than a million should they pay more in taxes yes they absolutely said yes but i want too much money so i'm not going to answer. those ten million in two months to emerge for too much one when the limit when millions enough to have i would say if people make more than a million dollars and they have bet on their bank account should they be forced to give back a moral there
1:27 pm
a moral and out in general interestingly i saw once that the to answer the question do you have enough money to curve goes like this as your wealth increases so people who don't have a lot feel that they don't have enough as they as people get wealthier a higher percentage of the think they have enough until they passed a certain point whereas as you get even wealthier you want even more so if you made ten million dollars i would give some of it away it's too much money are people that don't give it away and have that much in the wrong i guess it's a personal decision i just think that if you make that much money you could share it with someone that doesn't have so much should they be forced to through taxes like they do in scandinavia maybe so because sometimes if you don't force someone to do something and are going to do it no matter how much wealth you consider to be obscene the bottom line is when it comes to money it's hard for anyone to not want just a little bit more. coming
