here with our weekly news review welcome to the program greece has endured another roller coaster week with the prime minister having to pledge a new unity government to tackle the almost insurmountable debt crisis george papandreou narrowly survived a confidence vote down meet his main political opponent for talks with the opposition leader is refusing to get involved in the coalition and wants a snap election center for reports now from athens. great to find itself back in the spotlight this week and once again for all the wrong reasons now we began the week with prime minister george pop and calling for a referendum on the. plans we saw in two dramatic eternal nose referendum plans of it was met with this resistance both internationally and from within members of his government so confident go ahead on friday in parliament. and his government managing to narrowly by one hundred fifty three m.p.'s voting yes one hundred forty
1:02 am
five and the bill looks extremely clear if that date the prime minister and the government his talks now turn to the formation of a national unity government but there's a lot of confusion if these coalition the plan because the head of the main opposition party here in the country has rejected schools for a coalition and once again called for the early elections they're playing more. with trying to see who's going to blink to just to see whether a national unity will be created we saw the prime minister meeting with the president of the republic to discuss the formation of that national unity government whether that will be able to go ahead without the support of the main opposition parties i'm certain possibly turning to someone else the thing in the prime minister's role moving forward as he said still a lot of uncertainty there's
1:03 am
a sense of disappointment among this instability coming at a point this pivotal. for the future of the years and the last thing anyone wanted right now with even more instability and it seems that is exactly what they got it felt like change was in the at the end of the week it seems that much actually still remains to say but for how long and what form that government will survive remains. the president admitted it's possible greece could eventually quit the euro but against doing so. that's because of the blow to its neighbors. in my view the best the best option for the greeks is to default of course that there is much bigger financial consequences for for the rest of europe and for the rest of the world if that happens but if we're talking about what is in the best interest of the greek people then then then that's probably the best
1:04 am
outcome and many would say that the greek default has been delayed until the that the germans the french banks can can actually deal with it can can the leaders do something more well yes what needs to happen is a restructuring of the eurozone either those countries which are not truly aligned which is the peripheral countries leave the euro or there is further. political and fiscal integration in europe those are the those are the possible solutions there is a third possible solution which is a lot more printing of money now. europeans could print money and monetize the debt but that would then send inflation spiral that there is no there there is no easy solution to that but you have to come to terms with the fact that there is too much debt too much sovereign debt and it will not all be repaid some of it is going to have to be written off and there is going to be pain and suffering to actually go
1:05 am
through that process of keeping greece afloat was at the forefront of the minds of leaders of the world's twenty biggest economies as they met in france e.u. leaders dug in to defend the single currency in agree to shore up the international monetary fund. in a way followed the summit the ever changing greek drama took center stage in cannes for the g twenty meet here or host nicolas sarkozy protecting what he calls the beating heart of europe till the end. which is very strong angela merkel annoying agree on this and we will fight to defend europe and the euro. france and germany took action with this message to greece play by the rules or get out the greek prime minister made a cameo appearance in can return to athens and cancelled an improv referendum that would have more last a while the public to decide if they stay or if they go when it comes to the euro
1:06 am
perish the thought that they should be allowed to decide whether they want these things euro leaders say it is up to greece to or should look like this if greece is an independent country and i just want to say they are perfectly free and i don't want to give any idea that we are trying to get involved in greek domestic politics . but france has given some exactly that idea there is no longer an independent country and has been for a while the conversation is always on what we need to do to satisfy our creditors demands and our creditors are the people who are going to determine whether we survive or don't survive and the so-called backbone of the eurozone could be trying to save its backside with a statement from sarkozy that those who break deficit rules should be punished some with sanctions even if he is breaking the same rules back home in france they're running a budget deficit of beyond what what the rules of mass rich provide for the real irony with that is that the french banks are are so desperate for some sort of
1:07 am
a bailout and if they didn't get one for greece for example they could potentially go under and could be playing a major role in the fight to save the euro some hope for the single currency lies with the emerging economies or the brics who have already pledged to try and help the euro stay afloat but with a condition president medvedev says they want to play a bigger role in financial institutions like the i.m.f. and the group of twenty format already it seems some headway there as for the first time ever the g twenty summit will be held in a brics country and it takes place in moscow russia in two thousand and thirteen reporting from. can anything now r.t. . for the week saw the californian city of oakland witnessing one of the biggest protests of the occupy wall street movement came up against a tough police response to tear gas and rubber bullets fired at demonstrators at least one hundred people were arrested and several injured including
1:08 am
a war veteran the second such incident in less than two weeks artie's was among the protest. and we're still reporting from the top oakland as you can hear behind me loud explosions possibly tear gas from the police officers there are at least hundred of the not two hundred three hundred police officers in full riot gear several i'm as you can see advancing behind us right now on the occupy oakland movement now we don't know how many officers are back there we saw a massive group of them sort of walk down that street before that was the street of the standoff for several protesters had barricaded the street from the police several several pieces of furniture and whatnot were lit on fire but again not enough of an action to provoke this kind of a militant response by the police force here we have to remember that earlier thousands marched peacefully on the port of oakland shutting it down no arrests reported whatsoever in fact we didn't even see any of the police officers out there and yet after the peaceful march again this was
1:09 am
a scene unfolding on the streets of oakland and no other media outlets no other television outlets here on the frontlines we have been standing here we have seen tear gas fired several protesters injured from the tear gas in fact you can smell it in the air right now i wish i could describe it better but a very intimidating show of force when you have this line of police slowly marching forward with protesters in front of them the mood is an extremely tense we don't know how this will develop but people are sort of running out from the side streets that perhaps there's more confrontations down that way whether or not they're going to clear the camp remains to be here but as you can see these officers are marching behind as sticks in hand baton hand i don't know if you can get any closer on that shot but they're certainly coming here the crowd as you can hear is chanting oakland perhaps you can see over there several police officers with their weapons out shooting internet tear gas for these loud sort of done in a i don't actually hear anything but deafening air scare that the protesters and

journalists on site up. to his ears and clint. which has been the epicenter of the occupy protests this week and other u.s. cities witnessed some as well new york's mayor michael bloomberg said his city won't tolerate. that left protests as suspicious that it means police could be preparing to shut their camps about twenty people were detained demo day on saturday several arrests were also made in washington weapons protests and offices shelf protests to the ground and. sometimes beheaded. american principles. it's basically sending a message that we are as free of a population as free of a society as we thought we were basically a police presence can be used against the mass majority ninety nine percenters and that's something we do not like to see in the american society the
1:11 am
american people can only handle so much of the first class i guess you'd say income inequality in america where the land of the american dream and the middle class standard of living under these situations we're seeing that this wonderful country has turned into a plutocracy of the rich for the rich by the rich. still ahead this hour the whistleblower winded by a verdict. i have not been charged with any crime in any country. london's high court ruled that the wiki leaks founder julian assange should be sent to sweden to answer controversial sex crime allegations. palestinians got a step nearer the un winning membership of the heritage organization. the price is too high for some explain why. in syria a peace deal to end months of bloodshed made little difference to security forces
1:12 am
who renewed their attacks on regime activists in the city of homs activists claim more than twenty people died as the tanks rolled in but some experts fear nothing can be taken for granted in this conflict. these human rights groups are being used as a way of funneling stories to the media that there's no way to attribute them there's no way to verify them there's no way to know whether or not these events are really happening at all and the latest example in fact it's just breaking now is that apparently they're trying to say that they're the ceasefire has already been broken by by syria the syrian troops firing on citizens in homes we see probably a similar thing playing out here as we as we did in libya which was to really take over the resources of the country but more than that i think with syria what we're looking at is the strategic a strategic area which is a perfect place for launching a further result into iran i think if if the endgame of this is that random
1:13 am
seriously stepping stone towards that which is what i think we have to keep our eye on in all of this. also in syria the united nations nuclear watchdog claims it's discovered a secret facility in the north west that matches the design of uranium enrichment plant but others insist it's nothing more than textile factory reporter patrick hayes has been closely following the story his allegations to demonize syria. yes this is a way of heaping more pressure on syria during a time when the uprisings are taken place i think it really brings about the worst of both worlds in many way it brings about kind of western intervention but in a very insidious kind of i would say dishonest fashion they're basically doing what they did in iraq which is to use the guise of weapons inspections to basically poke their nose into all areas of countries or to seem to be suspicious a bit dodgy they're poking their noses in for what i would say political to be
1:14 am
political really rather than for any reasons of security concerns at this current time and i think it's very telling that they're choosing to do this at a time when the uprising to taken place what they're trying to do you see if they kind of effectively use other things as kind of mobs of fro at the situation to try and affectively build up a narrative which they can use should they necessarily want to intervene in the future i mean certainly syria is being recast in this situation as one of the one of the countries that needs to watch you know one of the countries that former for example a new sort of people something along those lines so i think it is being used for strategic reasons the only thing that really where is it actually is if the syrian people are left alone without any western intervention without their you know kind of their lackeys or kind of bodies like the international atomic energy agency poking their nose in and it's left to the syrian people basically decide what they

1:22 am
on earth i well actually they never left but pale faced bleary eyed these six men are returning from a five hundred twenty day epic mockup of the mission to mars and back they're thankful to be back among their fellow earth to others it is really really great to see you all again rather holer warming it's been an honor to having been part of this remarkable achievement with our five of the most professional fraley our assyrian individuals i have ever worn with it's clear that crew cohesion was key to sticking it out this door stayed sealed shut all throughout the seventeen months of the experiment of course it was only a simulation of a trip to mars any of the six men could have left at any time but none of them did
1:23 am
the scientists behind it wanted to see if the six man crew would be able to go all that time without severe psychological effects from the busy control room i was able to ask them how they got on the four they left how are your relationships with the other crew members changed at the beginning i was. not hoping i was maybe waiting for something like that to happen you know like fight or something close quarters for such a long time it works you know the best not most thing in the world. but. we have been very. effective from the beginning. the experiment was kept as real as possible with a twenty minute time delay in communications whims the ship was on its way that meant the team was alone they could talk freely with loved ones the researchers decided to withhold news from the outside world but that was tricky. we had to
1:24 am
keep in mind that some information could come in with private correspondence. some relatives could break the news in this case any prolonged silence on our part could lead to tensions and misunderstanding they could think that we withheld the information deliberately that's what much the highlight of the cruise trip was a simulated landing on mars with long isolation and boredom before it scientists observed with amazement just how real it became for them when they made landfall. with nationalists but i do both their pulse rate was one hundred sixty beats per minute now compared with the pulse of the first cause you're not hearing a garant orbit it was one hundred fifty two beats per minute the outside world has been intrigued by minus five hundred mostly through betting on how and when makes permanent would fail one bookmaker put a two on all one of the crew members going insane because of it.
