hospitals that are still in existence here what you don't see is any new hospitals because there are no new hospitals constructed in the sort of. if you look at this area from a health planning standpoint. the medical desert is along. the way i came across to get the medical records and security status quo that i couldn't believe it was well you know when i went in the thirty guard told me that . they basically doing years well movies now. and i was struck in believe that this is what's going on. and i was a great hospital this is the last house but i was in two thousand so when i got sacked. it was a sunday afternoon around twelve o'clock and just two cars came in and it was a big showed out and i just happened to roll by and i caught
7:34 pm
a bullet in my spine i came to my legs i'm paralyzed you know if it wasn't for the people that were here i don't think i would have made it the way i made it because i was a little kid i was seventeen years old when this happened to me i go to school and i want to college you know and if it wasn't for them i went forward i even drive now i do everything i'm independent and it's for these people and live it to help nobody else you know and somebody's mind i did that opportunity i got to write this case in chief mccurdy the middle said that martin luther king is going to be a complete closure for capacity is going to change from one hundred forty some bad section forty two beds for friends to be around pretty quickly so we're going to have schools. to see if when the hospital can challenge even those don't the schools the challenge is are going to be around the fans the professionals who need
7:35 pm
to gauge them getting read. and hear questions. your community has a nickname from ok everybody knows it's called killer king we would get on see first thing people would ask is where am i going to be transported and if we said mark with a k. you know often response was please don't take your kids. they're understaffed and underfunded and they have too many patients and didn't have private physicians and with four or five hundred patients in an emergency room it's very difficult to treat us those into the hospital through medical center is in critical condition and within the bottom two and a half percent of all hospitals in the state of california health officials say patients there have been put in quote and media jeopardy patients that martin luther king medical center to get ready for fewer services and a new day we cannot be sure that patients will be safe or that fundamental hospital
7:36 pm
standards can be met the proposed closure of the trauma center will have an impact the l.a. county part of our plan begging of you don't ignore this. don't marginalize this. war i promise. you anything like you. suggest i. use to be a very simple system that we have to every patients the closest facility but you close ten hospitals with eight beds it needs that's eighty patients out of our system in this city she didn't look well she came in sat scores we close our doors
7:37 pm
here we are close to saturation and our waiting room is for when our all of our yard bags are for handling these lines and waiting in the hallway and we're. basically close to saturation for certain purposes you know the sort of suppressed right so diversion is a huge thing for some of our hospitals down here they're on diversion about ninety percent of the time so ninety percent of time we're looking for another hospital or we could be across the street from the hospital because of pain much stuff where you live and let them do it because you're going to easy. prey harbor you still live by saturday for say fasts the staff serving as your help flower because the owner of the place for hospital work it's about a ten mile from our ride however we are in l.a. there's a lot of traffic so. you
7:38 pm
know. they're going to. pay. for the average american who has insurance they don't realize the impact of what's going on. with school and all of that obviously think it's a problem of the uninsured of someone else and you've got a worst mishal or injury actually just put it in there and spread all this we're
7:39 pm
going to be here and you see something certainly with the not ok ok so when you do this you can tell that it's not in attendance which is a really really bad infection. because going to the ten is going to go and if you're going fishing the worst sonar you can you know usually armed it's really going to prevent that it's really going to give you a bit but. you have to be in the hospital just to iraq and not just what is it six o'clock right now sixteen if you have insurance just a good thing you know finally have insurance ok magister was standing us i mean he did say we were waiting six hours is not uncommon and if you go to the surrounding hospitals people coming here tell me they're waiting twelve hours sometimes to get back however you see a way right now at this moment it's a twenty four hours meaning as soon as you walk in the door in the tree as you are and figure out you're not critical basically you're someone and they could definitely live for another couple of days before being credit they'll keep in the
7:40 pm
waiting room and you have to sit there and wait to be seen. it has happened at certain hospitals i've gone to and actually it all came it's a hard journey and we just sat there waited so we're missing calls in our district because our he's tied up at the hospital because you know how bad that patient. but the lady in the hospital that's that's normal i've had to rescue a couple weeks and waited for hours for me i've waited sometimes three hours i was it's a st francis and we went for four hours and fifty minutes getting us all the patients that there have been as you're going to wait and because even though we're inside there you know we're still on scene with a patient if we if we leave the hospital until we transfer care to a bed it's negligence or even the county can say you know what it was your paramedic license and you go on the river here if we don't have a paramedic i said we do a back to the firefighter only. so how many calls to get last night four calls a minute three out of the four calls we had were. people are
7:41 pm
just basic cold and flu symptoms live all the snow sniffles and nasi of ongoing diarrhea and sick for. three four days and just said uncle. smoke anything at all that you do in the car going for twenty eight years and i came on to say a single fortune far far when i came on the job. and back then we actually respond by four or five different types of v.m.s. course responded on chest pains heart attacks car accidents and surroundings if you called with springs or a broken finger that's a dispatcher back then told you to get a car to go to the hospital so a lot has changed. as they grow your be on you for what's going on today save one planet or not cause you're in a. hurry going on the very you know what happens. when are you really.
7:42 pm
tough for a man of the. season you've been here before yeah yeah i've been here a few times you can ask me five or six times that i steer clear of them on their mother or grandmother the son and the twins and her when she was pregnant with her with her youngest and their two houses this one another one down figure. young recruiter. oh you know i don't remember no one. i think in every ten minutes. you can say who were skeptical of free drinks and yes six told residents sisters oh yeah because if everything's looking ok all right you can relax me ok else we can do i mean here could be good. i will see the letter every day.
7:43 pm
i get to teach and i think he's part i mean everybody's understanding what emergency is different but i mean people can called out for a band-aid thinking that all we are is in a system that they can call and literally going to get a couple band-aids and i mean. get the. it's called longer story that. some of the programs that we do. we have things such as boyle's can't sleep they're hungry constipation toothpaste but if somebody says they're hungry would you tell. what are we have to do with your preferred over escape of local economies where. we've been called to you know broken sprinklers on the lawn to the dog and you the chimney you know second or what is old and had to call it always makes itself fun at the same time it's like. where do you draw the line yeah you're always going how the percentage of people who actually know the system that it was a jury of people it's not we're going down i want because we truly need somebody
7:44 pm
told what to do because this was their first route through it had to do right we have a transportation policy on the farm and we offer transportation to everybody on this it's a minor extremity injury since we've had that system which is the name of the last five years because lawsuits down to nothing since paid for itself. actually extends. to the taxpayer is the expense of the individual who wants to write the expense of the ripple effect of filling the spittal beds. with non-critical patients. i know gas prices are high but. i know i can get to the local mercy room for a lot cheaper in my own personal vehicle if i have the flu and the insurance company will look at that and say well what are paramedics really wanted on this
7:45 pm
and then they will pay and then the citizens get stuck with a bill. i really do believe that every patient should pay something for their care because one of the problems we also have in this country is that health care is not valued we have the most expensive health care system in the world and it's probably valued the least people are going to have to begin to take responsibility for their health care. pay something they can start small. perhaps a five dollar co-pay for an emergency visit i think it will change behavior as well . something happened down the question in what. here we've closed hospitals in the last ten years we've been over a thousand donal's harvey burger kings they contribute to the high blood pressure diabetes and everything else in the sense i mean if you get
7:46 pm
a tax cigarettes. from mr tyson fast food restaurants pay for some of the stuff. like. the dark side it will help you. just gotta go now. is he a diabetic or whatever it takes is one thousand days or whatever he had said no instantly he never once you got. se i thought we had to look at them for the sake of that because you know we can't force him out and talk to him and not then we think yes but not here this is just i know. we need someone who is this is autistic we need his permission to let my medics. know he's agreed to
7:47 pm
a sense of blood pressure you know he doesn't want to help them for smooth out of the nose with the means to beat this newsgroup we're going to take him in the back ground check and. then he says you're welcome step out of that was i know you do want the best for him he's. going to change and start to go search interior. of the city and you could avoid all that's right no he has no complaints he said he feels fine he answered all or pushed questions appropriately. please let me finish and it sure is one three it's within normal limits and we'd see. his blood pressure after after that if there's nothing that he wants from us but unfortunately if nothing else that we can do for him by law ok i'm yeah we do get frustrated and sour yes but it's the mercedes in the hospitals it's also the doctors i've seen them just blow up you know like why i see this person every day for the last ten days why are they here again you know when you see
7:48 pm
a patient response going to the hospice it's. easy to miss thirty detachments in a six nine three. it's hard to get to a lot of. personnel down here and i'm pretty sure it's. something california is not. the only area where it's happening now firefighters coming from different states want to apply to have a city and paramedics are experiencing the same thing i had a guy from he was dead last week paramedic burnout talked about his area. guy from new york. paramedic paramedic. from great is. here to show us the shield the shield is it still doesn't mean the other rescue at our station is available so they get the next cough which means we get the chance to take shower and pressure teeth so we don't get showers interrupted jimmy hates that. you know all these rescues here we're probably going to be
7:49 pm
waiting for a while because i think it's going to last available that yes i got that. right. you know. we just took a patient to martin luther king with me which history i was just in the emergency room and based on her level of severity so get it. we got there before a few other patients and she got a bad and now the other patients are going to wait even though they might have more . city year problems they might have to wait for that for hours. if martin luther king you know even if they just limit their number of beds which they're planning on doing so forty two beds and then that's going to be repercussions for everybody so. hopefully it won't get to the point where it's going to be affecting patient care to the point where people are going to be waiting for such
7:50 pm
a long time so that they're not going to be getting treated as they should so we'll see you haven't. yet he was actually right checking out with you and the passenger. there is no line in the end to this we are the county hospital for the poor and yet with a trauma center for everyone on the south bay area of los angeles. so it makes no difference if you have the best insurance on the road or no insurance the next time you're in a traffic accident if god forbid we have an earthquake or a violent terrorist attack we are the place that you want to come where the place is going to be proper garbus where you want to come and if we're overcrowded have no gurneys you're going to be in trouble you're not going to get the kind of care that you deserve. it's not the train wrecks that really scare us and keep us up at night it would scares and keeps this up at night is that essentially a pandemic flu you know take about. twelve hours before every hospital you are is
7:51 pm
overwhelmed. it's hard for particularly to go birth of a critical shortage yeah well now you said if you're in the emergency room there's nothing really we can do for you you're in the emergency room right now. well i can't they help me there dmards zero. a lot of times they think oh no i want you to take us in the ambulance because we'll be seen faster in the e r. that means that the emergency room wasn't be transported from one hospital or the other as you know yours and i probably would present there is where you want to go to kaiser no. there's no way we can do that. now when one was was. was a tool that was developed and like any tool you if you don't have
7:52 pm
a set of instructions i want with a tool is going to be a misuse and abuse and eventually you don't break. i am a man. caught up with one of the bombs all metal characters you're already an ass but obama with a name i'm trying to get interpreter for you are in the movement don't the one yesterday by one of the merchants fiercely told the young boy this woman his people almost want him in the bed it was ok all the emergency room of my life is what is dying
7:53 pm
and then there's with the one elbow child say what it seems you die alone in the fight against your primary no blood ok and why aren't they helping or they are all there watching or who did you know doing it and they're just watching her ok easy to contact a nurse or doctor let them know she's bombing blood they don't believe you they're not gonna let em in if you call them a problem you need to contact the county police officers after the charity dad there was no paramedics are not going to take him up are pictures wipe our pockets car ready at. one fifty one am. working version hopefully we'll tell the browns as norman bursts it will all blow up the poor folks all along but when i was playing i guess this was. where the bad was going to go to let me be clear
7:54 pm
that i am one glad we're going to where we're going to benefit your your i thought you. awesome and i'm gonna sound i cannot wait for you for the quality of the hospital that you're from st louis but i want to reach for murder purposes only when i get very conscious it out of the birds so there it is not a mirage the article reading there ok well that's not a criminal thing they have the advantage of the us contract on the bike ok let them go but we had better be with them just lying i don't want to use for only one life threatening it is not.
7:55 pm
a hate. after that incident we actually have patients who are actually not in the e.r. but in the ward but they're not getting timely treatment in the world they want more pain medication they'll take up the phone and dial nine one one so we're sending a message captain out to the eighteenth floor of the hospital it's provided more pain medication for a patient that's inside there. they want to see our firefighters paramedics are incredible i mean they're you know we take that we're constantly doing training and more training more training and is stepping up to fill that gap but is that what we want as a society for the fire department to become the health care system. a big part of the fix is more primary preventive care it's the people with diabetes and high blood pressure get treated early then they don't come in here with heart attacks and strokes. from. the sunni arab leaders that it feels like
7:56 pm
a lot of. medical primanti actually you love in an ideal world frost need to open up those county clinics and so we have some place where individuals will walk into before they become in crisis or need actually ninety one service but it all comes down the phone but it's a catch twenty two situation so what we did here fire season sixty five we've added two more rescues that we can put into place if things get really bad which they do a lot here is. is it a band-aid yes but. it's on a baby we have right now to serve everybody in this community. is going to. let.
7:57 pm
