welcome back to the big picture i'm samarra been coming up in this half hour is a change of leadership enough to save the too big to fail european nations and collapsing overboard cuts and more us austerity measures ricco part of the eurozone and in this week's geeky science the t.s.a. says that there are chertoff x. ray pro scanners have less radiation than about and some top scientists are casting new doubts on that claim personally i'll take my chances with the first and if you listen to the g.o.p. there's a very easy fix for all of our economic woes we better all start clapping our hands and be on the lookout for peter pan. turning to the ongoing financial crisis in europe it looks like they're like here
11:31 pm
in the u.s. the banks toure's always with four days after prime minister george pop in that area was forced out of office has been calling for a national vote of whether or not to accept a bailout from the european central banks toure's the greek government has settled on a new prime minister now taking the reins in greece is lucas papademos the former vice president of the european central bank unlike pop and guerrero papa de most pledged to do all he can to make sure his greece stays in the eurozone or the greek people actually want to or not the fiscal woes of greece is now spilled across the board and italy's the latest nation facing disaster borrowing costs in italy shot up yesterday to above seven percent levels that have led to bailouts being necessary in nations like greece portugal ireland but italy is not like those other nations italy is an economic powerhouse making a close to one fifth of the entire euro zone's economic output. meaning if italy
11:32 pm
fails again over already the crisis has claimed the job of bunga bunga party enthusiasm silvio berlusconi who agreed to resign as prime minister of italy once his government settles on a new budget play with hard hitting austerity measures yes just like the same austerity measures that pushed millions of greeks into the streets in athens in protest so expect middle class unrest to spread to italy next so what are the countries of europe and their banking institutions doing a word about this coming financial meltdown or more bailouts or more austerity measures really the answer and one of the consequences if too big to fail european nations start failing joining me now on the phone from italy is antonio turk ario coordinator for the italian n.g.o.s known as c r be an economic correspondent was covering the recent g. twenty summit in cannes and tonio welcome thank you very much thank you for joining us italy is on the verge of passing an austerity measure just like greece has done
11:33 pm
for the last year and yet greece is still on the verge of default so why is italy talking about adopted need zakk same failed strategy of austerity and why are the e.u. and i.m.f. pushing. well i mean it. is not over. at the moment. the. central bank and. i think it's a matter of ideology here. strong. preventing the. country. which is now happening. in the second thing is. to
11:34 pm
bring back. to. the government. change. much more. really having. governments are able. do you think that berlusconi realizes that italy is headed for social unrest and wants to get out while we still can. quite honestly leaving from world any any trying thing powerful. the question is. whether you can commission and contents of banks. you are crap as we call them
11:35 pm
believe in the world but we do not realize. the structural. crisis we didn't get the whole thing started as a banking crisis there was a lot of discussion of our public. major problems. in the way governments have to be partially otherwise consistent. and secondly you will. insure alluded. to the structural causes and. a little bit of a leaky comissioner looking. too big to fail to be so we really have to turn on and. in the minute or so we have left what
11:36 pm
is the right solution look like or is there no consensus whatsoever about what that might be. well there are many things can be done both in and short term and long term i think insured term basic. commands no. problem. but having a very different type of intervention from the bank which even contrary to the. generation of my own i think you face reality. buried in the shit out handing. control get this country we should be. that should be an issue about. financial regulation and reckoning the right of making correct. credit.
11:37 pm
in a ration eventually should have just the government paying for the sake. of by making them work on a profitable. company makes these things happen but. any money. to eventually. extension. may be. thinking. but again the whole or remember or do. everything. to do is to germany and we. german. occupation antonio thank you so much for sharing sharing your perspective. thank
11:38 pm
you but bad news is europe and the rest of the world might be headed for a global crisis good news i suppose is it might be just the thing to end wall street and the international bankers dangerous reign over the global economy. yep that would be the good the bad of the very very are with the row phobic really ugly the good occupy denver merab denver has been demanding that the occupy patriots in the city choose a leader in spite the fact the ninety nine percent movement is by definition a leaderless movement but on tuesday the occupy denver general assembly finally complied with the mayor's demand and chose a leader shelby a three year old border collie as occupy denver's web site says shelby exhibits heart warmth and an appreciation for the group of personal ambition shelby is
11:39 pm
closer to a person than any corporation she can bleed she can breed and she can show emotion you can show he is a person corporations aren't people occupiers and introduce shelby to the mayor this week as well as the governor of colorado and this weekend shelby will be leading in march against corporate personhood just like the ninety nine percent movement has even the dogs on. the bad john mccain the former maverick senator turned shill for corporations is pushing a new bill to let corporations bring back all the money they have stashed in offshore bank accounts to try to dodge paying taxes instead of being taxed at the corporate a thirty five percent when they bring him back mccain's bill will tax them at a measly eight percent he defended the legislation by saying if you brought one point five trillion dollars back to the united states of america it's bound to have some positive effect somewhere i don't see how we're not even if they buy more yachts and corporate jets and all out so first became screams about the deficit and
11:40 pm
then mccain decides to let corporations off the hook for bain taxes so the millionaire billionaire c.e.o.'s can buy more yachts and corporate jets because john mccain is we're really are. to be the number one the one percent favorite. and the very very ugly brian kilmeade this morning on g.o.p. t.v. fox and friends kilmeade explained what a parent's worst nightmare is no it's not hearing that your child is in jail or injured instead it's hearing that your child joined occupy wall street. what is the biggest nightmare for a parent we get up in the morning and spotting one of your kids i have one of the occupy movement i thought they were in school when i have it right because engaging in our democracy and exercising your first amendment rights. instead parents want their children to support while in their bedrooms playing video games while we country is going to use either that or getting big spewing right wing talking
11:41 pm
points on fox news well that's very true. it was exactly one year ago next week that the transportation security administration caused a national uproar by rolling out the chair chertoff for an x. ray scanners in airports all across the united states it's e.s.a. says the full belt body x. ray scanners are safe and the radiation from a scan is much less than what passengers get from flying or getting an x. ray at the dentist or even eating a banana but some scientists now say the evidence made public to support those claims is unreliable and in a new letter sent to president obama's science adviser john holdren these scientists question why the t.s.a. won't make even one of the scanners available for independent testing by outside
11:42 pm
scientists there are basically two types of body scanners there's the millimeter wave machines which are made a radio frequency similar cell phones and then there's the back scatter machines that work like a fast moving x. ray they actually use. yes raise the rates bounce off the skin and create a white image of the passenger's body underneath their clothing because the beam doesn't go through the body most of the radiation is received by the skin the t.s.a. says the back scatter technology is going to valuated by the food and drug administration the national institutes of standards and technology and the john hopkins applied university applied physics laboratory and all of these tests have confirmed that the scanners don't pose a significant risk to public health but the scientists who've written the white house pointed out several flaws in these tests for example john hopkins lab didn't test an actual airport machine instead the tests done at johns hopkins were done on a model built by the manufacturer and set up to resemble
11:43 pm
a system previously testable. and independent studies published in scientific journals in the last few months have also cast doubt on the radiation dose and the machine's effectiveness for detecting explosives peter read a physics professor at arizona state university who is one of the cosigners of the letter to the white house has tried to calculate the radiation level by examining the small batch of backscatter images that have been released publicly he concluded that it's highly unlikely the machines could produce such high quality images with a low doses of radiation that the t.s.a. claims professor rez says they have to produce these kind of pictures the radiation must be at least forty five times forty five hundred percent higher and the results measured by the t.s.a. sometimes an even greater and very real danger critter's occur if the machine which quickly sweeps a pencil thin x.
11:44 pm
ray beam from head to foot with a gear driven mechanism were to stop in the middle scan allowing that actually being to focus on one spot for several seconds or. t.s.a. says that the scanner of safety systems which is automatic shut off some emergency stop buttons that will kill that beam in the event of a problem if one of those gears fails we could result at normal radiation but the t.s.a. has not explained how these safety systems work plus the full results of the shut off tests were redacted blacked out in the test results that were released by the t.s.a. workers so as you gear up for your annual holiday travel there's an occupy movement to avoid don't occupy the chertoff x. ray pro scanner there's no telling how much radiation will end up occupying you by the time you've made it through security. coming up later and i was merely take find out why the figure who seems to be the g.o.p.'s top adviser may be better suited for a job at disney and. what drives the world the fear mongering used by

your take my take is the segment of the show when we answer your questions comments criticisms and opinions heard here on the big picture our first viewer comment today is from the viewer rant one who thinks you two are far easier to go to the streets yet to inspire wire crowborough there are times when from the hospital a moron. for the day or so to make sure he's ok they are on my way to san francisco for a camp where they get it all it takes to us through our new couple years ago then you would tear factories far in my brilliant test farm for a truly appreciate could work. thank you i believe the caller is talking about joining the ninety nine percent movement in san francisco and if that's the case i have to thank you both for his very kind comments about getting out there. and also for getting out there getting active you know as cliched as a may sound for those of us who work in the media you really is often about making this kind of connection with one person when you engage in any kind of public
11:47 pm
discourse whether it's writing an article or an entire book but you have a podcast hosting four hours a live radio and t.v. every day. sometimes the best you can hope for is the one reader listener viewer out there has one of those aha moments based on something that comes out of the dialogue. it's really nice to get affirmation so i wish this caller the very best and i hope you keep us posted on your experiences the streets are x. viewers tonight commented knight is from the town arbonne facebook page a.j. posted i'm a new listener so it might be common a common saying and show but what is this need or we society that was repeated a few times today well a.j. this concept of the city vs the we society is one of the much fundamental differences between progressive ideology and conservative ideology actually i explained the concept again just last week here of the big picture take a look at the occupy wall street movement isn't just about the one percent versus
11:48 pm
the ninety nine percent it's about what type of society we really want to live. if there's a point in michael moore's movie because this is movie about how the health care system where he looks at the camera and says words to the effect of at some point we have to decide do we want to live you know we society or a nice society historically humans have chosen to live in a we society whether it's tribal people whether you go back to the bible i mean it matthew twenty five the foundational concepts of christianity of judaism you know it's restated matthew twenty five care for the homeless care for the hungry feed the hungry heal the sick this is fundamental stuff thomas paine laid out in his book agrarian justice he actually proposed a social security system. thomas paine in the seven hundred ninety s. when our country was first being founded thomas paine proposed social security proposed a minimum wage proposed equivalent of unionization proposed that every person upon
11:49 pm
earth should have some basic fundamental amount of money allocated to them that they could use throughout their lives but there would be a decent retirement but it's really quite extraordinary most of the things that came along with the new deal thomas paine proposed and seventeen the occupy wall street movement for example the ultimate example of where we society free books free health care free food people working together and if you look at the republican budget you find the exact opposite the republican budget is all about a nice society me societies are called feudalism where the very very few own pretty much everything including all the property of the of the of the serfs it's kingdoms it's poke bill as in koch brothers bill this is the world that the libertarians and the right wingers want to bring us and frankly it's not the world that has historically been america and it's an america that i don't think anybody record so you can read more about this concept in several of my books including the
11:50 pm
newest tom hartman reader that's it for your take my takes and if you like your comments and questions heard on this segment of the big picture listen up we want to know your to send us your comments by visiting the time our facebook page but twittering that underscore when you're in the champ are among the message boards for the blog and can also leave a message on a rant like it's two two five three six fifty three zero six agree disagree sound off it's all welcome the remember that your comments may be used on the air. we might be on the verge of an unprecedented global economic meltdown. but if you watch the republican debate and you're really really gullible you might think there's an easy fix to our troubles and the european debt crisis to the jobs crisis here at home to the health care crisis to the looming energy crisis to the housing
11:51 pm
crisis and student loan debt crisis you name a crisis it's a one size fits all solution to it and all the republicans on stage last night did not shy away from talking about that solution let the so-called free market work its magic right now feeny bay and freddie mac. are demanding more money because we don't allow the market to these termine what these mortgages are worth but we're not going to pick winners and losers from washington d.c. we're going to trust the capital markets in the private sector to make the decisions and let the consumers pick winners and losers i'm going to cut all the subsidies out and let the market work as opposed to creating incentives for different assessment forms of energy that the governments of the supports we let the marketplace works to have to have the market time and thousands of race if you want a healthy viable economy you have to let the market work and get people into homes again you'll see home prices come back up if we allow this market to work would
11:52 pm
find the way to the line and make fred a mag such that the marketplace can prove that. we need to close the gap on the uninsured without a costly mandate letting the free market work in bringing people together with truly affordable insurance that's the free market roberts fifty three million people uninsured and free market will fix it greece and italy are about to drag her global banking system into a depression and free market will fix that to student loan debt topped a trillion bucks for the first time. in the free market to fix it republicans have one talking point just one solution all our problems and that's hyping up the power of the so called free market or in herman cain's case you know the power of his nine nine nine plan and the free market. but there is but let's think about that for a moment what exactly does it mean what does let the free market work what does that really mean when they say that is a major move government and deregulate everything because we already saw how that
11:53 pm
worked repealing back a glass steagall repealing reserve requirements repeal into riveted regulations all leading to the stock market bubble and crashing and burning just like what happened in the one nine hundred twenty s. after the free market was deregulated in one nine hundred twenty one by president harding who slogan was literally this is elections lower less government business more business and government we saw it lack of regulations did the b.p. oil disaster in the gulf last year that killed eleven men or the massey mine disaster that killed thirty eight we get rid of all the rules and the referees and the market will inevitably descend into chaos and sometimes the people die. by generate a boatload of wealth for the one percenters at the top for a little bit but then as has happened every time free marketeers have succeeded in muddying the free market work it all comes crashing down imagine if you want to
11:54 pm
a baseball game and there were no rules there were no empire umpires there were no balls and strikes no limit on how many people were on the field no foul ball lines no specific order to the bases what kind of game would you see played out in the chaos complete and utter chaos republican reply to this but the team with the most money to determine the rules of the game. strikes they can move the pitcher's mound closer and get a home run with just three bases and the team with less money they have to work with a different set of rules where if the umpires catch them breaking even small rules there guys it's thrown out of the game forever. this is in essence a mitt romney game the system for years and bain buying companies changing their rules laying off their people moving their production overseas and taking millions for himself while he he let you and me pay for the unemployment expenses for his
11:55 pm
former employees is the republican way and it has nothing to do with anything it's free it's about markets where the rich and the rich alone rule and set the rules so when the republicans talk about letting the free market work it might as well be saying let the free market fairies we are magic ones and everything will be just fine if a candidate on stage last night was asked how will you solve the problems in the housing market and he or she responded by saying oh i told government regulators to step aside put a team of magic fairies to work fixing everything we're doing take that candidate seriously ever again no maybe they would still take herman cain show bachmann seriously but joking aside that's pretty much exactly what every republican candidate on that stage was sane last night. but the magic fairy and the free market solve our problems right now fannie mae and freddie mac.
11:56 pm
are demanding more money because we don't allow the fairy kiddies termine what these mortgages are worth we're not going to pick winners and losers from washington d.c. they were going to trust the magical fairies in the private sector to make the decisions and let the consumers pay pointers and losers i'm going to cut all the subsidies out and let the berries work as opposed to creating incentives for different assessment forms of energy that the governments of the supports and we let the faeries works you have to have the very common interest rates if you run a healthy viable economy you have to let the ferry work and get people into homes again you'll see home prices come back up if we allow them to work i would find a way to put on line and i'm a freddie mac. so if that magical fairy said. we need to close the gap on the uninsured without a costly mandate letting the faeries work in bringing people together with truly affordable insurance payouts. you know it's time to cause you to
11:57 pm
b.s. and stop accepting this so-called free market fairy stuff as a magic elixir to all our problems. and by the way credit to paul krugman for coming up with a phrase for america fairies because all it is in reality is a poll tested for aids free market just like job creators approaches freeze to get average low information voters to nod their heads and blindly follow the lead of the millionaires and billionaires who are perfectly happy in the perpetual boom bust cycles of a free market economy or bankers get a boom and we all get stuck with the bust there is no magical free market there are no fairies no secret green elves no unicorns no loch ness monster and more than likely know about it it will snow a bit but there are real solutions solutions that have been tried in the past and it worked really well solutions like raising taxes on the rich putting regulations on the banks toure's setting trade tariffs weaving
11:58 pm
a strong social safety net and protecting the rights of workers to unionize and organizing the labor unions basically none of the stuff you heard in the republican debate those are the real solutions we need and not the nonsense you hear spew from republicans on a daily basis. that's the big picture for tonight for more information on the stories we covered visit our web sites at tom hartman dot com free space dot org and archie dot com also check out of two you tube channels there are lots of tartan dark star shows also available as a free video podcast on i tunes and we have a free time arbonne i phone and i pad app with the app store you can send us feedback on twitter at tom underscore our other facebook at telling the story of our blogs message boards telephone comment line at tom. and don't forget democracy begins when you participate when you show up when we all participate show so get
