9:30 pm
are you ready to rumble when we come back my panel i will take on this week's biggest headlines in the big picture friday rubble. what drives the world of the euro mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through a bit through who can you trust no one who is you know if you would have local missionaries where we had a state controlled capitalism school sessions when nobody dares to ask we do our t. question more.
9:31 pm
it's friday so that means the weekly big picture news wrong joining me on the panel this weekend david marr toast go. close up close it editor of the daily caller erica kennedy democratic strategist here in washington d.c. and derek otter columnist for townhall dot com contributor writer both the government and the daily caller let's get started new census numbers show forty nine million americans living in poverty but what's really interesting is that if the republicans got their way that number would double right now more than a quarter of americans twenty eight percent of americans would be living in poverty if the new deal systems social security medicare and systems were done away with
9:32 pm
and so. this is what you know the number of people in poverty would double if we did it with social safety net i don't get it so twice as many people living in poverty just a pesky little side effect of handing social security over the wall street c.e.o.'s medicare the for profit insurance company first of all congratulate president obama for setting a new record for poverty that seems to be his only objective it is only accomplishment as far as you're speaking hypothetically these things would happen if republicans were in charge which of course you have no proof for just like obama says things would be much worse if we hadn't wasted a trillion dollars on the stimulus bill it's this hypothetical world of clue we've got in we think we can actually look at what happens to the spill going into effect and you look at the deficit go away in the bush and the unemployment was never going to go above eight percent start crashing when we got to ten percent or what was a lot of them stephanie anything to take our story here is the wealth disparity between the older and younger generation facts come out as well as this in addition it's pretty obvious think people who are younger are more subject partly because of the
9:33 pm
social safety net for seniors like security and medicare but they also have now earning as much you have to earn more as you get older as you work while you're nowhere. more a gap in the terms that it's over five times as much as it was twenty years ago he got more and more to look for more to look forward to where six he's like my dad and i had to jump in here and just say this is a commendable display of arrogance on everybody's part the idea that americans have a significant globally speaking a significant problem with poverty is ridiculous our poor people in this country eat better live better and are better educated than the rich people in so many other countries this whole business about the if you want to compare it. to the idea that you know i don't want to compare you to europe anybody here in new york anybody in this country earns more than thirty four thousand dollars a year as a household is in the one percent globally we have poor people in this country have v.c.r.'s very little b.s. that you would i'm totally disinterested in the literally time you know what mr
9:34 pm
stripey i'm greatest nation and you're all going to be a reason you want to give you to be easy to measure by which is measure ideas you get it out of us brilliant there's seven billion people on earth for a half billion live on less than two dollars a day and that's the standard you guys want to measure is a good you want to measure our behavior and as reasonable standard for poverty one . of the veterans day the occupy burlington movement in vermont the thirty five year old vet shot himself in the head yesterday suicide this highlights a disturbing reality on today patrick's day here in the united states over two hundred thousand homeless vets in the united states while their nine percent of the general population veterans are they are fifteen percent of the homeless population and shouldn't we enact a new g.i. bill. we have a duty some people just don't take advantage of it and for whatever reason they should be spotted i agree with you that we should be a little more. while they're in this three days of the existence of said jim jim
9:35 pm
webb. were great in terms of trying to help bring back up the g.i. bill paid for in terms of education here's what i will say i think we need to really look at as our veterans affairs in terms of the funding because we have people that are coming back that maybe thirty years wouldn't been able to come back because of medical technology and because we've become so efficient at reaching people on the front lines and they need more mental health services they need more . as an example of what we should do with their entire sensitive but i'm going to miss their you know you want to say i'm not trying to products that what i am i want to hear it down because you know it will be we have to deal with people who are coming back from these two wars which were city wars it wasn't just people who got up and feel this was fighting building to building there's a lot of people in a civilian program we're going to be the voice of reason here again but let's let's remember a few things said to sing the homeless is a really difficult if not impossible thing to do i question the sincerity of people
9:36 pm
who say they are able to measure how many homeless the eighty demographic group we have in this country and secondly secondly the folks who study this thing best and have done it for the longest will tell you that is surprising a shocking majority of people who are homeless on the streets are there not because they would prefer to do something else but because that's it's sad to say but that's where they want to be there are people who are there who are mentally ill and there who can and will there are mentally ill and we simply we have stopped and if they're going to go well i think every society has are these evolution of people . feel rightly that there were no homeless veterans and that that was all i mean like i think i've been pretty far to this idea that people would prefer to be ill and homeless than to be taken care of or have access to better therapy i think and i think you're very closely to there you're very close to the truth i think. the problem is we look at the solution if there is such a thing the hopelessness as being give people homes the real solution hopelessness is give people counseling give people the health treatment so that they can be
9:37 pm
productive and functioning also there i say a growing economy so people that initially of my own that had a blazing like this right aligned that were uk obama was the only goes one thousand isn't going to bear those jobs i mean we can all if we're going to wade through their growing economy with a fine thing to be able to have a president as they do it actually and i think putting veterans train there's a couple different bills also that explain that extent as probably have shortages of medical staff and rural areas these stating that you have a solicitor or government that's going to expand you have been doing it on the very last you belise ago more police brutality video out of berkeley this week areas. you that you are yes yes i don't know if you thought was i was
9:38 pm
so we have four or four thousand patriots arrested and how many bank stars are going to jail how many banks toure's you call it have broken the law zero zero exactly what is your answer not anyway how many if you're. wrong how many of them have been charged and convicted any not listen here remember oaken are there you are seeing an evil party a little hell even if you like something that i see at the school yard at the great school there that's not police brutality you have to. go deer no they were very sad and we were having i believe that my that and a free country that i don't that the police don't have the right to jab me with and i mean people have to get part. of overdoses and shoot each other before you think maybe these how many spoiled him started ideal need how many people can be unemployed for months and months and months ahead what has it without us you know as you see how easy it would have been the way out is you know now after publicly for council because i'm crazy i'm you can sort of he said it was a rifle he says she's like banging their eyes are actually going to get better you
9:39 pm
don't want to be your stereo you're very lucky if it says to her closest to the kit at later times people are so much against consumption they're coming down with it for quite a lot and within a stone's throw of the c.d.c. these places are other healthy unsanitary other really chaotic and if i were a member of a police force i'd be telling people look for your own good you have to be here not there there's a lot to observe when you don't observe the law we push where you need money and that's not much how would you that's a lot of health care is a lot a lot of police departments have been doing that i've been working with protesters in various localities however there's a when when the protesters start throwing bricks at the police the idea that oh no you're going to go build. he is addressing the address tonight question of shouldn't we bang sisters and for you joyously to do what you think your economy should what do you think gambling with our money ready to arrest the federal government. i would i would like to arrest whoever was promoting the bear stearns exception but show me a lot of years as exemptions up until that time in two thousand and four everybody and all way back from one hundred thirty five banks could not but in investment
9:40 pm
banks gambling banks could not borrow and could not gamble with more than twelve times what their asset base was and you have to bear stearns exemption it allowed banks pierce turns j.p. morgan chase. goldman sachs and one of the it allowed five banks to rick perry no it was not allowed five banks to to voluntarily follow the rules and they went out of forty to one leverage and then they got caught maybe someone who are going to be the first person who. has already got a quarter on the resistance priority for a client or anything but i think a lot of part of the problem is that there aren't any a lot and i would say they are what we have most of us a lot of not a lot of this was a change in policy that was done by the f.c.c. under the bush administration. and we have more will now getting our master into separation but we have more lost focus on a bunch of protesters who are exercising our first member rights and we find that a more disturbing and we need you know people who are going to be rather more to get the are you going to be in the wrong and do you really focusing on regulating
9:41 pm
and making sure the show you want the baby and bankers that it was illegal i don't know you were up to a question we were going to more a large order and then right now as the governor and his side even if you disagree you can join the line you know where i go a lot but the truth is there is a little bonus army guys breaking the law who's sort of bonus army nine hundred thirty to forty five thousand vets camped out from the from the lawn of the white house to the potomac river i don't really probably you know i my father wasn't alive then so i can't really know. but i thought you were the biggest danger is not the occupy wall street movement it is the fact that wall street. regulated and that there is no consequence to charities i know you are saying that are you on crack now saying regulated now is the result of pain is a direct result of the regulation and then finding ways around to work with rather than being trained what you're looking at is the direct result of deregulation but it we're moving along sean hannity excuse me mitt romney has sealed the nomination seems herman cain says he really isn't running for president you know hannity is
9:42 pm
now going out against. this this woman's now it's this woman's husband or fiance or not fiance or whatever rick perry can't seem to remember that he's running for president and how much longer can mitt romney stand and it was protection program this guy has not done a sunday talk show in over six hundred i agree that he should be really should have gotten the better seat on fox news bret baer show newt gingrich i think right now is making the surge and you've left him off that list but i would take him out of the he's i would presume i would probably want to write him to be obama you put that on a preview of the streets i'm going to get around here i am actually waiting for everybody to self-destruct around him up and down the ladder which is fine but it's not a very smart strategy when it comes time to be that out of every party i look i think what happened what's happening here is herman cain is demonstrating that strategically and in terms of campaign savvy he's not ready for the job mitt romney has demonstrated that he knows that well though say you know i'm going towards i'm
9:43 pm
not going to paid out of your salary to a bunch of people who was six months out and that's an average severance for somebody who works six years at a place it's very much a he said she said at this point because the point is that her party's at fault here he did not respond to the crisis he doesn't have the jam g.-d. knows what he's doing he's got no ground game he's got nobody in any of this i'm not going to do the oh yeah this is what i say this book which is going full noise for you from is exactly at the end of the day people are calming whack a mole and anybody that's not romney suddenly gets to admit once they're tired when you up against obama debate frightens you a little bit not you know fresh air. in their head are not going to fight ask yourselves. is that areas how many companies the obama administration the obama campaign same thing agree to based on which candidate emerges if it's herman cain the want to beat him five times it mitt romney told me to pay them twice if it's nuking which they will barely agree to one i mean if you can't say with everything they have there is nothing like bringing back a paper prepared to go to that they don't want to balance a budget that's the kind of guy who actually better than budget that you're talking
9:44 pm
about obama now right yeah i mean nobody wanted it he said that balanced budget the the it was passed during the clinton ministration that we would have a great depression. or democrats lost the overwhelmingly the then came in carry on in two thousand say i get around are you going to have any particular candidate but let's look at what happened in the most recent debate perry datums up the parlor joke. i think we had several irrelevant candidates who were made irrelevant and look who emerged as the serious contenders here you've got mitt romney you've got to get rich i wish there were more candidates i wish i polled ryan which opened afraid for my particular proclivities but they won't so right now you're left with mitt romney who is a pretty face and a new congress who's got some uncomfortable baggage and you've got a president who is both a pretty face and has lots of a couple baggage i think it's a matter he's having it's going to think about what's going to be kids going to be very interesting to. me ok so we're going to get over here give over the world officially the world's most expensive prison eight hundred thousand dollars for
9:45 pm
prisoners a lot of people i think you know and that is that a couple of channels that is that that doesn't even begin you know we consuming out of here that doesn't even begin to cover the cost of america's reputation around the world for even having it so a luxury resort and for a republic that reserve reputation so we're not looking like you don't like pampering people and don't like wasting government money and i sort of why have you why don't republicans i guess behind the constitutional notion of holding our prisoners in our prisons in the united states and giving them trials like the constitution and i always you know this is you know is a real. terry are you as always on the computer i was here right how many u.s. citizens. sometimes let's listen for a second because you do realize rights to the united states has and so you know the let there be reality is that it is expensive to have anything like a war or anything that doesn't have a logical and and we're not trying people we're not putting them through a process in a system which results in a trial you're going to have something there's no end to how much money you're on
9:46 pm
the president incredibly large you'll notice that coming in office as he did a locks the fund never lied largest and that was part i was bipartisan if you want any of this is gospel because during the summit it was blocked by democrats but there was a time when the democrats had sixty votes you could close it any time it doesn't and i just you know it's i mean i don't i don't personally were to filibuster in the senate this reminder that we're going to have a number when there were sixty democrats there so really is iraq was by far the president obama going to own this problem which is your own the economy what is your only going to get a fair assessment he said this is his economy but when he said this is his get most of what you don't have a house republicans going to own accountability for their and for not actually working on getting anything not passed i mean they seem billed as a us citizen all fifteen of the. fifteen of the. team more than the president has got a problem if you look at the last one of us that has reality real how about how about the pipeline the democrats or the senate let's actually propose
9:47 pm
a play can you get your asses in the senate just the rear of it i mean i doesn't matter you know i'm playing nice what i'm saying you guys are new republican strategist. and they're going to stay on the planet that you know there's going to have charge of the house one of the actual branches we should have fifteen different take responsibility for the leadership that they are advocating you got to move on to more and more as everybody else without a lot of retired never gets old so let's play rick perry's memory was just one person if you can't name the third one the third agency of government i would i would do away with education the. come right back to the commerce and let's see i can't. so which one of these three things could rick perry do to make sure he doesn't repeat this same mistake in the next debate eight he can follow up on his admission on the letterman show last night. hey listen you try concentrating with mitt
9:48 pm
romney's smile at you. but i saw you could solve the problem put in a bag over mitt romney's head or you could take some hits in the gubernatorial quarter sarah pailin and just right on his hand education commerce and energy or he can. so your thoughts oh he's toast he's done he's gone he's a parlor joke you don't recover from that period yeah well let me add the reason why is not because it looks like he has a bad memory and because it looks like he has no passion if he really cared about that topic he would another from his guts well he knows me very sorry he's rattled that list off so many times but it was it's a brain freeze moment you're not allowed to have those i think if you want. your thoughts i'm going to say that for the first time with this that this was the rick perry that's forgetful and not really paying attention showed up and that might be
9:49 pm
one thing but this isn't i mean we've seen this before from him he was like this in texas and suddenly now he's like this on the national stage and i don't want i mean i do there's no way to be as a bad man who wants a president by and i think there's a sense that there's no there there and joe biden actually does care about the issues themselves because doesn't understand i think that. he should remember that he wants to eliminate seven of the fifty seven states and move on i mean we need equipment from there to the rest of the united states since president obama's plan was that not one i might add ok mike then i said i salute the response to clothing of course why is my solution is that rick perry should start using the product of one of my advertisers on my radio show as a factor food for the brain it is the capital of the moment for you ladies that if you. don't receive which you know the banks hammy thank you. very much for your memory i take the fish oil every day you're in america david thank you all for
9:50 pm
short of. coming up with today's daily take i'll tell you why the answer to saving our economy may just be. history. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through. who can you. no one. is the view we have read see where we had a state controlled capitol school sackfuls when nobody dares to ask we do our tea question more.
9:51 pm
i'm more in the spirit. if you want to save our economy we need to go local perhaps the most effective and most important trend coming out of the occupy wall street movement over the last
9:52 pm
that i have is the flight of customers from big banks on wall street to local credit unions on main street earlier this month on bank transfer day for forty thousand americans took their money out of wall street's coffers and moved it into local credit that's forty thousand people in. you can add to that the over six hundred fifty thousand people over the last month and a half done the same thing taking over four and a half billion dollars right out of wall street that's more people who join credit unions in just the last month than did through all of last year. so who said occupy wall street isn't having an effect and there's good reason to go far too many cities across america today look exactly the same as streets are lined with the same negative retail stores the same big banks and the same corporate chain restaurants is so bad you can be airdropped into any city in america and have no
9:53 pm
clue where you are because all the businesses around you look exactly the same so much for the local diner the local clothing store local bank they just couldn't compete against these giant trans nationals that have come up come in and eaten up pretty much every town in america this is not how a city thrives it's how a city guys when local businesses flourish on main street and the money funnels through the entire city profits the local bookstore clothing store it put into local backs the local bank in lines of the local entrepreneurs who start more local businesses and hire more local workers to go and buy local stuff with their paychecks but when transnational giants take over main street the money is no longer cycled through the city instead like a giant vacuum cleaner all those profits are sucked out of the city every night somebody pushes a button and it all goes off to were ever gets deposited wherever the trans
9:54 pm
national giants headquarters are and increasingly it's an attack haven like the cayman islands and these trans national mega corporations they don't really give a damn about the city in which they're setting up shop it's merely a place to hire some cheap labor and extract some profits make some sales. in some cases corporations even contribute to the bankruptcy of communities take what happened in jefferson county alabama the county was forced to file bankruptcy in fact it was the largest ever municipal bankruptcy in american history why because the city got screwed over by bankers on wall street in a twisted scheme of corruption and financial manipulation mega banks j.p. morgan chase and goldman sachs allegedly paid off elected officials to invest in junk bonds to help finance a new source system for the for the county when the junk investments went bust so did jefferson county running out of money meanwhile the big banks they were on
9:55 pm
state made off with enormous profits and fees that they made hustling the system together for jefferson county and jefferson county instead decided to rely on local banks or credit unions to finance the new city projects and they still be able to pay their cops and teachers today another thing that makes local businesses better beyond the fact that they keep their cash local is that they have to be good citizens in the community mostly because the local businesses their family own to the families that all of them work at the local and work at the local company they live in the local community but only that local communities preserve regional cultures personalities and perspectives of local businesses you can tell the difference between nashville and all the buses more stability and local businesses so the local economy becomes more self-contained if one or two businesses fail the community can deal with it but if a giant transnational corporation decides to shut down
9:56 pm
a plant move it off to mexico and suddenly hundreds sometimes even thousands of people are out of work in the community a town is devastated but the corporation which is far distant goes on to make higher and higher profits. in my book on equal protection i lay out the primary reason why transnational corporations are eating up our local communities is something called corporate personhood protected under the law as if they were people corporations have set out to rig the game and clear out the competition in the market especially competition from local small businesses they lobby politicians are now oppose citizens united they just buy politicians they push for more so-called free trade agreements so that they can undercut the prices of local small businesses and then they buy up all the businesses around them creating monopolies that end up screwing over customers and will generally with higher prices for lower quality stuff which by the way used to be against the law and as
9:57 pm
long as corporate personhood continues our nation it will never again see an entrepreneurial boom luckily though the backlash is underway thanks in part to occupy wall street which is already sparked the move your money campaign to local credit unions and trans national its space on main street may soon be occupied by a local business and with amendments to repeal corporate personhood passing just in the last week in boulder colorado and missoula montana it was in the past two weeks the calls to strip corporations of their secret weapon of personhood are reaching a deafening pitch around america sure our economy might be in the tank right now but if we could get rid of corporate personhood and then keep up with this movement to embrace local economies again and kick out the banks there's the outsourcing c.e.o.'s and the big polluters from our towns in the next great entrepreneurial
