it's friday so that means the weekly big picture news rondell joining me on the panel this weekend david martos go. close enough. to make it better the billion dollar erica community democratic strategist here in washington d.c. and derek are columnist for townhall dot com contributor writer of big government and the daily caller let's get started new census numbers show forty nine million americans living in poverty but what's really interesting is that if the republicans got their way that number would double right now more than a quarter of americans twenty eight percent of americans would be living in poverty if the new deal systems social security medicare or the new deal and great side

assistance were done away with and so. this is what you know the number of people in poverty would double if we did away with social safety net i don't get it so twice as many people living in poverty just a little side effect of handing social security over the wall street c.e.o.'s medicare the for profit insurance companies first of all congratulate president obama for setting a new record for poverty that seems to be his only objective if there's only accomplishment thus far and you're speaking hypothetically these things would happen if republicans were in charge which of course you have no proof for just like obama says things would be much worse if we hadn't wasted trillion dollars in the stimulus bill it's this hypothetical world could have given we think we can actually look at what happens to school one fact and look at the deficit go away in the bush and the unemployment was never going to go above eight percent stop crashing when we got to ten percent or whatever it was that i wanted to spend money and even take our story here is the wealth disparity between the older and younger generation that's come out as well as in addition it's pretty obvious they cable

who are younger are more subject of poverty because of the social safety nets for seniors like social security and medicare but they also have now earning much you have to earn more as you get older as you work and i remember it. more there at the gap in the terms that look i think it's over five times as much as it why is it twenty years ago who got more and more to look for more to look forward to. and i have to jump in here and just say this is a commendable display of arrogance on everybody's part the idea that americans have a significant globally speaking a significant problem with poverty is ridiculous our poor people in this country eat better live better and are better educated than the rich people in so many gulf countries this whole business about them but if you want to compare we are going to do you know what i'd like you guaranteed in europe anybody here at news of anybody in this country earns more than thirty four thousand dollars a year as a household is in the one percent globally we have poor people in this country have a v.c.r. sure. that you wouldn't have missed the rest of the one right i mean what i were

misplaced striving our greatest nation and you were all good babies and you want to do you measure by which to measure ideas you do not yet there's seven billion people on earth four and a half billion live on less than two dollars a day and bats the standard you guys want to measure a signal want to measure i bet you have your dreams of a standard for poverty on the right is the way i am this is a movie. that the veterans day the occupy burlington movement in vermont the thirty five year old vet shot himself in the head yes he committed suicide this highlights a disturbing reality today veterans day here in the united states over two hundred thousand homeless vets in the united states while they're nine percent of the general population veterans are they are fifteen percent of the homeless population and shouldn't we enact a new g.i. bill. we have a duty some people just don't take advantage of it and for whatever reason they should be spotted i agree with you that we should be a little more. while there is this reaction to the existence of such. a path jim

webb's revised are kind of the updates to the work work great in terms of trying to help bring back the percentage the g.i. bill paid for in terms of education here's what i will say i think we need to really update look at is our veterans affairs in terms of the funding because we have people that are coming back that maybe thirty years one and able to come back because of medical technology and because we've become so efficient at reaching people on the front lines and they need more mental health services more rants are going to use everybody as an example of what we should do with their entire since i am going to miss it and i'm you know you want to say i'm not turning the products that what i'm i want to hear it down and we're going to have to deal with deal with people who are in these two wars which were city wars it wasn't just people who are caught up in a field is fighting building a building as i said why do people with disabilities. leave the voice of reason here again let's let's remember a few things since a single homeless is a really difficult if not impossible thing to do i question the sincerity of people

who say they're able to measure how many homeless of any demographic group we have in this country and secondly secondly the folks who study this thing best of data for the longest will tell you that it's surprising a shocking majority of people who are homeless on the streets are there not because they would prefer to do something else but because that's it's sad to say but that's where they want to be there are people who are there who are mentally ill there because when we don't know mentally ill and we simply we have stopped and if they want to know well i think agree societies are these evolution of people. feel rightly that there are no homeless veterans and that was all i mean like i think i've been pretty far idea that people would prefer to be ill and homeless than to be taken care of or have access to better therapy but i think and i think you're very close there you're very close to the truth i think. the problem is we look at the solution if there is such a thing hopelessness as being give people homes the real solution hopelessness is get people counseling get people mental health treatment so that they can be

productive and functioning also dare i say growing the economy so people have been actually. like this in the rock obama what i'm going to go so many thousands of i'm going to bear those jobs i mean we can all if we're going to wait till they're growing our economy would be a fine thing yes too bad we don't the president has a do with it but actually going to be putting veterans training for a couple different bills also that that explain medics and as aunties probably have shortages and medical staff and rural areas these seem to have this government that's going to exaggerate the reigning in and that unless there has ago more police brutality video out of berkeley this week europe has. you got it yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it was was

investment banks gambling banks could not borrow and could not gamble with more than twelve times what their asset base was you have to bear stearns exemption it allowed five banks piers turns j.p. morgan chase. goldman sachs one of the it allowed five banks to rick perry i know it wasn't a lot of five banks to to a volunteer really follow the rules and they went out of forty to one leverage and then they got caught maybe designed to be the first person. that's the way it was i write down what about what he says it was already for a while remaking but i think a lot of that part of the problem is that there weren't any last program and i would say it would be catastrophic of not all of this was a change in policy that was done by the f.c.c. under the bush administration. has more will never be my battery in such a situation we have more lost focus on a bunch of protesters who are exercising their first my rights and we find that the more disturbing than we do people who are grieving randomly assigned to be more documents and that's usually the way to go wrong and you know we focusing on

regulating and making sure the channel you want to ban bankers that it was illegal or i don't know you were not black and to my question we were going more on order and then right now is the governor and the side even to disagree you can join the line you know where i owe you a lot but the truth is there is that one of the bonus army guys breaking the law was the bonus army nine hundred thirty to forty five thousand vets camped out from the from one of the white house to the potomac river i don't really agree with back then probably you know as my father was alive and so i can't really know. what i thought you were the biggest danger is not occupy wall street movement it is the fact that wall street is. regulated and that there is no kata i mean the juries are very you are saying that are you on crack now saying regulated now has to be reduced came as a direct result of the regulation and then finding ways around to work with them go away rather than retrain what you're looking at is the direct result of deregulation but we're moving along sean hannity excuse me mitt romney has sealed the nomination seems herman cain says he really isn't running for president you

know hannity is now going out against. this this woman's now it's this woman's husband or fiance or not fiance or whatever rick perry can't seem to remember that he's running for president and how much longer can mitt romney stand and it was protection program this guy has not done a sunday talk show in over six hundred i agree that he should be real the should have gotten center seat on fox news bret baier show newt gingrich i think right now is making the surge and you left him off that list but i would pay money because i would pay to sort of i would pay money to go buy you put it on pay per view of what i think you're going to get romney really i can't actually i'm waiting for everybody to self-destruct around and then left on the last day which is fine but it's not a very smart strategy when it comes time to be the nominee of your party i look i think what happened what's happening here is herman cain is demonstrating that strategically and in terms of campaign savvy he's not ready for the job mitt romney has demonstrated that he knows that well then say you have records i'm not going to

get out of your salary to a bunch of people who was six months out and that's an average severance for somebody who worked six years at a place i'm not going to very much and he said she said at this point but the point is that her he did not respond to the crisis he doesn't understand chinos what he knew he had no grounding he had nobody in any of this i'm not going to you know your business it's good way to be running for more it's very different if i come all at late at the end of the game already but romney whack a mole i think anybody that's not romney suddenly gets there gotta admit once i'm sorry when you up against obama in a debate frightens you a little bit not you know for i am awful i mean there are not the fight ask yourself. this i ask you the areas how many of the obama administration the obama campaign same thing agree to based on which candidate emerges if a turning came they want to debate it five times if mitt romney told reading table twice if it's nuking which they will barely agree to one i mean this new congress they would get him every day that there is nothing like bringing back that this guy that voted that didn't want to balance the budget this is the guy who actually got

i mean imagine that you're talking about obama now right now i mean you know you want to that florida has said that balanced budget the that it was pastor in that clip administration but we would have a great depression. we don't talk or democrats last name underwhelming leave them out then you can carry on two thousand saying i get around are you think anybody could pick a candidate but let's look about half of the most recent if eight perry data itself apart which oak. they had several irrelevant candidates who were made irrelevant and look who emerged as the serious competitors here you've got mitt romney you've got new cambridge i wish there were more candidates i wish i paul ryan which opened the fray for my particular people but he's but they won't so right now you're left with mitt romney who is a pretty face and a new congress has got some a couple baggage and you've got a president who is both a pretty face and has a lot of the capital back and i think it's a matter of how it's going to be with us going to be it's going to be very interesting to see. so we're going to get him over here give all the world officially the world's most expensive prison eight hundred thousand dollars per

prisoner to lock people up and get them and that was out of the public and that is that that doesn't even begin you know we can see who we got to get that doesn't even begin to cover the cost of america's reputation around the world for even having it so a luxury and work the sort of hampered republic that ruins our reputation so we're not looking like you don't like pampering people and don't like wasting government money and i sort of why even i don't republicans i guess the hind the constitutional notion of holding our prisoners in our prisons in the united states and giving them trials like the constitution. is it really is a real. it's here already where us is also the bad getting bigger i was the right how many us citizens. first time doesn't settle for second because you forget rights rights to united states citizen several years and yet here it reality is that it is expensive to have anything like a war or anything it doesn't have a logical and and we're not trying people we're not putting them through a process in a system which results in a trial you're going to have something that's going to there's no end to how much

money until now the president incredibly hard was going to call it a second day in office as he did these days i mean this people walked the fund artist and. it was like artists if you want to make fun of this is a hospital or close to it was something it was democrats and republicans that were trying when the democrats had sixty votes he could close the datings on terms of that kind of time and i don't why don't we were to filibuster in the senate this reminder that having that happen then when there were sixty democrats there certainly is the right way by far as a personal problem to this problem which is you're on the economy what is your only . response this is occurring but when he said this is get most of what are you going to house republicans going to own accountability for there and are not actually working on doing anything or pass i mean they can't seem to say yes there is nothing in the fifteen if you're going to you can go to the gun go fifteen you are the type of. more than the president has got a problem but it was the last tell us. how well the pipeline the democrats were the

if we want to save our economy we need to go local perhaps the most effective and most important trend coming out of the occupy wall street will but over the last

half is the flight of customers from big banks on wall street to local credit unions on main street earlier this month on bank transfer day for forty thousand americans took their money out of wall street's coffers and. that's forty thousand people in. you can add to that the over six hundred fifty thousand people over the last month and a half have done the same thing taking over four and a half billion dollars right out of wall street that's more people who join credit unions in just the last month than did through all of last year. so who said occupy wall street isn't having an effect and there's good reason to go far too many cities across america today look exactly the same their streets are lined with the same mega retail stores the same big banks and the same corporate chain restaurants it's so bad you can be airdropped into any city in america and have no clue where

you are because all the businesses around you look exactly the same so much for the local diner the local clothing store local bank they just couldn't compete against these giant transnationals that have come up come in and eaten up pretty much every town in america this is not how a city thrives it's a city guys with local businesses for a show on main street but the money throttles through the entire city profits the local bookstore clothing store they put into local banks the local bank then runs out to the local entrepreneurs who start more local businesses and hire more local workers to go and buy local stuff with their paychecks but when transnational giants take over main street the money is no longer cycled through the city instead like a giant vacuum cleaner all those profits are sucked out of the city every night somebody pushes a button and it all goes off to we're over his deposit where the trans national

giants headquarters are and increasingly that's an attack haven like the cayman islands and these trans national mega corporations they don't really give a damn about the city in which they're setting up shop it's merely a place to hire some cheap labor and extract some profits make some sales. in some cases corporations even contribute to the bankruptcy of communities take what happened in jefferson county alabama the county was forced to file bankruptcy in fact it was the largest ever municipal bankruptcy in american history why because the city got screwed over by bankers on wall street in a twisted scheme of corruption and financial manipulation negra banks j.p. morgan chase and goldman sachs allegedly paid off elected officials to invest in junk bonds to help finance a new sources them for the for the county but when the junk investments went bust so did jefferson county running out of money meanwhile the big banks they were on

state made off of the norm as profits and fees that they made hustling the system together for jefferson county jefferson county instead decided to rely on the local banks or credit unions to finance the new city projects then they still be able to pay their cops and teachers today another thing that makes local businesses better beyond the fact that they keep their cash flow is that they have to be good citizens in the community mostly because the local businesses their family own of the families that own them work at the local and work at the local company they live in the local community not only that local communities preserve regional cultures personalities and perspectives local businesses you can tell the difference between nashville and albany plus there's more stability in local businesses so the local economy becomes more self-contained if one or two businesses fail the community can deal with it but if a giant transnational corporation decides to shut down

a plant move it off to mexico and suddenly hundreds sometimes even thousands of people are out of work in the community a town is devastated but the corporation which is far distant goes on to make higher and higher profits. in my book on equal protection i lay out the primary reason why transnational corporations are eating up our local communities is something called corporate personhood protected under the law as if they were people corporations have set out to rig the game and clear out the competition in the market especially competition from local small businesses they lobby politicians are now oppose citizens united they just buy politicians they push for more so-called free trade agreements so that they can undercut the prices of local small businesses and then they buy up all the businesses around them creating monopolies that end up screwing over customers ultimately with higher prices for lower quality stuff which by the way used to be against the law and as long as

corporate personhood continues our nation it will never again see an entrepreneurial boom luckily though the backlash is underway thanks in part to occupy wall street which is already sparked the move your money campaign to local credit unions and transnationals space on main street may soon be occupied by a local business and with amendments to repeal corporate personhood passing just in the last week in boulder colorado and missoula montana is in the past two weeks because district corporations of their secret weapon of personhood are reaching a deafening pitch around america sure our economy might be in the tank right now if we could get rid of corporate personhood and then keep up with this movement to embrace local economies again and kick out the banks there's the outsourcing c.e.o.'s and the big polluters from our towns in the next great entrepreneurial
