the russian and american presidents holding talks on the sidelines of the apec summit in hawaii their focus in the south of france and russia's future after w t o we bring you all the latest live from honolulu just ahead of the program. the leaning tower of berlusconi finally falls the italian prime minister resigns after parliament approves a new austerity package intended as a last line of defense against collapsing confidence in its economy. the arab league suspends that syria recommending sanctions against the country in an effort to force president assad to end of the deadly unrest that's claimed more than three
7:01 pm
and a half thousand lives. and broadcasting live direct from our studios in central moscow this is r.t. glad to have you with us the annual apec forum has brought together the world's political and economic heavyweights from the asia pacific nations in hawaii this weekend the summit touches upon a vast number of issues ranging from establishing a pacific wide free trade zone to the eurozone crisis we're now joined live by our t's on the star trek and who is in honolulu see it thank you for joining us now first president obama and medvedev are holding talks as we speak what is expected to come out of the meeting. well that's right the russian president medvedev has held quite a range of bilateral talks here in honolulu including with the leaders of japan
7:02 pm
malaysia vietnam and korea and as we speak he's meeting with the u.s. president barack obama among the issues they're supposed to do. of course the issue of missile defense. russia's future of the world trade organization bilateral talks a really reassessment of ties between russia and the united states as well as the situation around the adoption of russian children in the united states now when it comes to of the issue of missile defense of course russia nato agreed to cooperate on a possible project for european missile defense plan at a summit in lisbon in two thousand and ten this however did see somewhat of a stall because russia has been asking for the united states to provide a set of legal guarantees that any such plans would not be a threat to russia security this however has not been done yet so this is expected to be a big focus of talks between the two presidents also russia's future of the world trade organization of course this is something that's been a desire of russia's since one thousand nine hundred three and is expected to be finalized as soon as the summer of two thousand and twelve and this is what the
7:03 pm
presidents will be talking about as well you know there are also some very ambitious plans for the summit in general as anything concrete emerged so far. well you know our so far we have seen a very wide sort of a range of meetings and talks in q. and a sessions and meetings with business leaders and so far we know that the leaders have been focusing on really economic and trade corp in this inside asia pacific because this is of course a summit one of the biggest economic groups that make our countries of the asia pacific they have been not talking about issues such as lifting custom barriers and trade but it's important to note that even though this is the traditional focus of apec this year of course it's been impossible for leaders to ignore the fact that the european financial crisis is really looming over the world economy and this is something that we are expecting for the leaders to really give
7:04 pm
a big push to and really a nod to europe and ask europe to act as fast as possible and come up with solutions to the financial crisis and this is really one of the results with that we're expecting to come out of this summit here in a light. as usual with events like this there's always some strong statements coming from the sidelines we're hearing some of those strong statements can you tell us a little bit about what they're talking about. rule. that's correct you know as you rightfully mention traditionally economic and financial issues are the focus however because there are so many leaders gathered in one spot for such a short period of time political statements do get me political. topics do get raised and in this case we have seen syria take the headlines because of course after a long time of the anti-government clashes on the ground with the arab league really suspending syria we have been hearing from u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton who has said that the united states calls upon
7:05 pm
the syrian president to resign russia on the other hand has been very careful with this in saying that it's ready and happy to help to for parties to get together and negotiate for talks because there are russia believes that it would be irresponsible to act otherwise. eyes to avoid a scenario in syria which would be similar to what we saw happen in libya all right thank you very much for joining us that was an honest to see the church going to joining us live from honolulu of course will be keeping us a bated as the event continues and it is the end of an era in italy as the country's charismatic prime minister silvio berlusconi steps down and comes after the lower house of parliament gave its final approval to a vast new austerity package which was a precondition for his resignation the p.m.'s seat though won't remain vacant for long with a veteran euro mario monti looking set to take the baton from berlusconi the public reaction so far has been mixed with some celebrating berlusconi's fall while others
7:06 pm
are wary of the future our correspondent in italy sara firth has the details. that austerity law finally sells silvio berlusconi speight and he stepped down as prime minister of the country that's a federal was he was certainly a character is against the a massive change and now that he's resigned from the optimism certainly for a future what that future will be right now remains uncertain is that a caretaker government is going to be put in place and the man is paid for the top spot is very well respected economists here in the country. he's the former commissioner he's a year and he knows the system inside and a good links to brussels this question mark avery where he's going to have the democratic legitimacy that is needed to gain public support of course and an elected government taking the reins does raise a lot of questions once he's seen these measures pass through these are just the
7:07 pm
initial steps he was is a short term measure certainly they're going to be some way to stemming that panic that we saw at the beginning of the week and to calming some was the fear that if he was literally about to be sucked into that spiral that we've seen a country. but of course short term measures only last so long you're going to really now need to look at whether whatever government now follows is going to be able to put in place long term sustainable measures to get the country out of the crisis situation that it's found itself knows in virally today speaking to some people in the town there who were holding a protest there were a couple of thousand and one of the measures that they were protesting with government spending a waste of taxpayers' money and really what they were saying was very clear is that whatever happens whoever takes how is it the really caring to want to see their politicians and those people in charge leading by example and of course they simply
7:08 pm
haven't seen that under berlusconi especially in the last couple of years i mean quite the opposite. in the face of the crisis palace anything to feed it just partying his way very. very critical time for the country and really now that's where the focus is turning to the country is and has been suffering figure is under economic social and political stagnation and kickstarting that is going to be a major challenge and a big posit that it's going to be regaining public trust and the credibility that's been lost in recent times because without the public support these reforms simply not going to. actually surface reporting for us there in italy and staying with the subject peter mandelson the former british secretary of state says it's incredible that market pressure on greece and italy managed to oust their respective leaders when millions of protesters in those countries couldn't do the job. but what we've
7:09 pm
seen recently in new year is there is some government not as strong as all those not taking the decisive action that they need to take frankly not getting on top of events now their elected government says for the difficult for all democratic machinery to be used it's simply to take out. a government this be democratically elected and actually what we've seen to be in the case i think of greece and italy we've seen the bond markets being able to achieve what normal democratic means have not been able to do and that is to put those countries to get the governments they need at this particular time no i don't attach any value judgement to that it's merely an observation that in these circumstances we've seen. here for a team rather more effectively than ordinary democracy and coming up in just a few minutes. the pro he quality occupy movement blossoms in germany
7:10 pm
as thousands of protesters a flood the political and financial capitals of the country demanding of the government brain in a corporate and banking greed. and of china's booming economy isn't always met with open arms with the united states and sometimes painting the emerging superpower as a dangerous prospect. the arab league has voted to suspend to syria from the organization until a peace plan is implemented to stop the bloodshed there member states have also been urged to withdraw their ambassadors from damascus and to use economic and political sanctions the decision which has already received the use for backing and was praised by u.s. president barack obama came at an emergency session in cairo an overwhelming majority of member states supported the move with only lebanon yemen and syria itself voting against the director of the center for research on globalization michel chossudovsky. believes the league's move is an act of provocation
7:11 pm
orchestrated by washington. this is not a decision of the arrow lee all the arab world is a decision a washington and it is there to justify war plans directed against syria which are already on the drawing board of the pentagon this is not a protest movement it is an armed insurrection immediately following the peace proposal of the arab league on gunman which are al qaida affiliated entities paramilitary were sent in to trigger a new round of civilian casualties it is not to say that the government. doesn't bear responsibility but we must understand that the very parties to this to this
7:12 pm
arab league the solution are also complicit in supporting an insurgency and armed insurgency with preview could destabilize the syria as a nation states nato and the united states are put perry war military campaign directed against syria on the humanitarian pretext while at the same time they have supported the other goods direction which has created this this process of instability dr. professor of economics at zaytuna university in jordan says russia and china should try and curb the arab league's ambitions. it's very important for russia and china to use the veto in the security council because the arab league has said that the issue will go to the security council and the international organizations namely the u.s. and the u.n. shortly what we have here is a plan to topple the syrian regime and clearly establish and they are friendly
7:13 pm
regime in its place so we have to look at this in geo strategic terms the arab league does not represent the arab people that represents nato at this point i do not think that we can call it a revolution especially after the revelations that there is an armed insurgency and now there are open the liberations why the people come but being these operations against the syrian army and against syrian security troops so now they are openly. performing military operations all over the place against the syrian army and military so we have seen support from perky from the g.c.c. and from the european union for it and i think that that encompasses economic military as well as economic political and diplomatic means from the middle east to
7:14 pm
europe the pro equality occupy movement is quickly gathering pace in germany with almost twenty thousand people protesting in berlin and frankfurt protesters a wave placards and a lot times in it solidarity seeking to draw attention to rampant corporate greed be increasing poverty the masses of german occupy movement has also made significant steps and legitimizing itself having earned the support of two major political factions sundram and of the pro equality attack germany group believes berlin is partly responsible for europe's economic woes. it is needed to have protests and brought movements in all european countries and we know they're tearing germany germany is one of the countries that course is quite a lot of the trouble we have in europe now because of the way international competition is organized germany is very often on the winning side but that means that be exploited also poverty and sharpless nice for people and to be learned
7:15 pm
during the last years there it's very very soon taxpayers are forced to help to save the banks we learned in two thousand and eight what's happened in such a very short time when billions of euros were given to the banks if you asked people here on the streets they agree with the protests they agree with the people of the occupy movement that it is needed to go out because everybody learns that democracy is in danger that in our country too there is no person active how to go on if this crisis is going on further and it's real and still ahead for you this hour the return of our new york resident this week or hard for us to find out if passers by are fed up with political correctness. we've called thing in england where the sun comedians have been pulled up in political is being carried out it's what people were getting a little crazy with being you having to worry about every word they say. should we
7:16 pm
censor every word that comes out of our mouths more of what people think just for minutes. i mean the financial woes of america and europe investors are making a sharp turn to the east where china keeps on rising in the ranks on the global economic stage beijing's that might however is not being met with enthusiasm in the u.s. i can use adriana assesses the attitudes. ways i'm not what you always will be a mama maybe wasn't holds you we got a case was he so. like years old she's waiting. once i'm in the process. she and sad come and go to get warm in. the future you have to yikes ok let's just get right down to it shall we should we
7:17 pm
be afraid of china. well what other place in washington d.c. is chinatown to find out i don't think we have to be a fraid of china but i do think that we should be concerned well concerned might be the right word for it and angelina isn't the only one a march twentieth live in b.b.c. poll shows that many in the west aren't exactly thrilled about china gaining more economic steam in the span of just five years negative attitudes towards china have skyrocketed with france germany italy the u.k. and the u.s. on happy at the thought of china nipping at their heels and for the us nowhere is that clear and in the race to the white house china is on almost every dimension chidi this is no longer a time for us to sit back and say we're going to let them steal our jobs we need to do is start in rich saying china with our money i want to beat china i want to
7:18 pm
go to war with china and make america the most attractive place in the world to do business woah woah whoa does it have to be us or them and is anybody buying it the world is changing you know so like the fact the fact that like china's economy is modernizing. isn't the reason why our economy is doing poorly right now. and so it's maybe just a straw man when. presidential candidates bring that up but they did it in a in a business sense an economic sense most countries do just work with china as any other country so yeah i don't know where the fear comes from from the u.s. about china well there you have it it seems china is the new kid on the economic block and it's up to the u.s. and the west to see how they deal with reporting from washington i'm not going to settle artsy dr caroline hellman from occidental college in los angeles who says washington feels the need to paint china as a new evil empire. china becomes this very convenient target we need
7:19 pm
an enemy right the cold war is over terrorism doesn't provide a concrete enemy for the united states to confront someone we hear this republican competitors talking about china as an enemy i do think that it fills that notion of having something to oppose in order to buoy the resilience of nationalism and again i find i take issue with that nationalism but at the same time i think it's good for the u.s. to have competitors it's never good for a global superpower to be the only one at the top are perceived because then they act with impunity and i believe at various points in u.s. history we have seen the evidence of that i think having china in the mix will be very positive for social political relations and you'll find more on china on our website or to dot com there you'll also find out how the occupy wall street demonstration in the u.s. has been turned into performance art. you look here in new

recent poll indicated that people are starting to feel like political correctness is having a negative effect them for friday how do you feel about it this week let's talk about that it's been carried overboard. people were getting a little crazy with being having to worry about every word they say whether it's actually politically correct if you live in this country you should be politically correct because this is your country what does that mean that so you can have to censor what you say you should think about what you say you should you should take time to use the correct words before you say something that you don't mean us and i mean we've got a thing in england where comedians have been sold on political correctness well i think you just got to realize specially a comedy. you know everyone's going to be offended by something and i just think there's always going to someone who would look for something to complain about my generation or relate how we just laugh it's funny but it just depends if like generations accosting if you're talking smelly people then yeah you show some

respect even if you know you don't completely think it's necessary it's different when you're young but when you start getting a bit older you realize that sometimes what comes out of your math is not a pearl. it's refreshing to see somebody like chris christie from new jersey cause he speaks his mind regardless of what the consequences are versus always being worried and people are going to think what the poll numbers show for you'd rather be offended in at least have the truth yes very much so but they're not you feel like political correctness is having a negative effect on society the bottom line is it's probably just going to keep becoming more and more prevalent. in kazakhstan at least seven people have died in an attack by a suspected islamic militant five police officers were among those shot by the gunman in the southern city of shiraz he also killed the owner and a customer of a weapons store in hijacked a car reports say the attackers then returned to his home where he collected

tom barton tested the waters. slowly the old soviet resorts on russia's black sea coast are becoming centers for very modern water sports throughout the week hundreds of children and adults of be competing here in the black sea cup windsurfing trophy and it's hoped that with the right support this region could become a real center for water sports. it's the black sea cup in southern russia the waters full of jellyfish is sea full of waves and the wind whips the air with salty spray and that's just what everyone here has come for. children and adults have traveled from all over russia to show this kills and sharing the growing water sports experience here and on as want the best but when you ride in your board at top speed your feelings saw you have control of two forces of nature in your hands wind and water. is currently number two in russian and his skin the waves in european

competitions and sport isn't cheap and he's short of financial backing to match that of his european and american competitors but he's hopeful for the black sea coast as a potential world class water sports center. this is a wonderful place with a great wind the infrastructure is ok but with some investment it could be cured we had a three star competition here not long ago and we have hopes of hosting a world championship he'll be trying to win the championship i was just getting the hang of standing up i'm surrounded by hundreds of when third of all a big thing in the black sea. of the growing status of water sports. i won't be joining them any time soon. i neither would i be taking part in even more tricky kitesurfing here too they had been battling it out to prove their speed and agility surrogate has been crowned the number one in russia.

as a lot of adrenaline that's what it's all about tricks and a lot of adrenaline now it's easier it's a master trick you have to feel one hundred times the black sea provides good conditions for this ball too it's a difficult sport to master with many of these young riders taking years to reach that standard. but we have a number of good spots for riding this wonderful day and on the other side of the black sea here in russia the season is short so we don't have much practice time on the water with the advantage of russia is we can snow kite. again it's money that's the problem for most kitesurfing now however it's on the way to joining the list of the lympics sports and that raises the profile of what is still a fledgling seeped in russia. or the sport needs young people in ten years i want to see hundreds of kids kiting here then we'll be in good hands we'll have

department beds and not enough nurses commandoes that's to take care of all the people who are the only real health care system that we have in the city of los angeles is the los angeles fire department in fact when i started my venture is a firefighter i didn't want to be a mask i started out wanting just to firefighting it's about eighty two percent of what we do the fire department is medical but they had a rescue couple weeks ago waited four hours for it i've waited sometimes three hours but i was it's a same francis and literally for four hours and fifty minutes standing against a wall of patients and we have a federal law that mandates that you can't turn no one away who seeks care in an emergency room. we have the most expensive health care system in the world and it's probably valued the least.
