peaceful protest but a rougher response u.s. police move in to arrest the occupy activists evicted their camp in new york part of the anti-corporate movement's two month anniversary. moscow steps up efforts to mediate peace in syria hosting members of the country's opposition urging them to hold talks with the government. but this club says the kremlin slums western powers for inciting the violence in syria like cranking up the pressure on president assad to step aside. and are reaping the rewards of war british firms lined up to exploit libya's rich oil and gas reserves with lucrative contracts on offer from a transitional government. for
7:01 am
pm in moscow i'm not good to have you with us here on r.t. our top story the birthplace of the anti-corporate occupy movement in new york's been raided and cleared out by police hundreds of protesters who've been camped out in zuccotti park for two months have been evicted and banned from coming back to stay officers reportedly used force to kick out some of the activists with witnesses suggesting pepper spray and tear gas were also used authorities removed all of the tents citing health and safety concerns protesters say it's an excuse to sabotage a massive demonstration planned for thursday let's get more on all of this from our he's marina portlock joining us live in new york hello marina so police have been accused of using tough tactics in dealing with the occupy protesters across cities in the u.s. and others. the writing epicenter of the movement where it started as
7:02 am
a county park in new york isn't seen as a major blow to the movement. i think some would say this is a bit of a blow to the movement because as you mentioned the new york city police department struck at the core of occupy wall street this is where the campaign began nearly two months ago and subsequently spread throughout the nation and so at one am tuesday morning when hundreds of police officers dozens of them clad in bright peer moved into zuccotti park it was somewhat of a secret the activists were not foot notified and they knew of this when the cops came in with flood lights and sirens and demanded that all of those occupiers that have been living there about two hundred or so leave immediately and removed their property from the park and i'd witnessed says he saw tocs using pocket knives to open the tennis that some people were sleeping and he yelling for them to get out
7:03 am
many of the protesters did leave peacefully many of them were shot they didn't realize what was happening what was going on hundreds of cops are surrounding them but other activists did resist some tied themselves to trees and there was a video that's been seen and shown in the film of some of their resisting arctic is being manhandled by the police at least seventy people thus far have been arrested and some eyewitnesses say that sound cannons were used by the n.y.p.d. to try to evacuate anybody any of the occupy activists that were resisting to leave the park i know tense and personal items belonging to the activists have essentially been destroyed those taking part in occupy movement saying that nearly five thousand books that have been donated have been destroyed and thrown out.
7:04 am
and there was another clash between police and octave is that unfolded where the activists warned a human shield to prevent at least officers from breaking down in the kitchen and there were so essentially no food is cooked to to feed the object is that live there night and day before this one. secret raid essentially took police. are the police could hand out flyers to the activists indicating that the park's owner brookfield properties said that the park had to be a back you need it in cleared because it had become unsanitary and hazardous to new york city mayor michael bloomberg said that he supported this decision and i'm quoting when it quoting him he said made no mistake the final decision to act was mine was mine and that's new york said city mayor michael bloomberg taking responsibility for what has been going on for six hours now the city says that
7:05 am
activists will be allowed back in the park after it's cleared out but they will not be allowed to bring in tense cars or sleeping bags clearly need this circumstance a lot more difficult for for the activists to occupy the park with it wouldn't or whether approaching but for now hundreds if need be it need be now thousands of activists have marched about nine blocks north to our place called foley square and that is where unions are reportedly good will be showing up within the next hour to join protesters so if anything this have this is maybe a rally even more support for the for the for the movement but at the same time it has been a huge blow and speaking generally about the movement two months on and spread across america and much of the world but how much of an impact has a really made towards achieving its aims well you know i think that it. credit
7:06 am
credit has to be given to the occupy movement with that but as you mentioned it is spread to all fifty states in the u.s. it is being considered the most a namak democratic movement since the one nine hundred sixty s. in that sense that it's gaining news coverage it's gaining support but in terms of fundamentally creating change it hasn't gotten that forward yet it has gotten far enough where during the u.s. presidential debates are the candidates are being asked questions about occupy wall street u.s. president barack obama has been dressed the issue of occupy wall street saying he appreciates the grievances and frustrations of the activists fault they will say that he isn't doing enough to cause a change in the u.s. system but. they are gaining notoriety they do have a voice has there been significant change thus far in the past two months no but it's only been two months i met two month anniversary will be marked on thursday
7:07 am
and that's when the occupy movement is planning what they call huge of that throughout the day in new york city in one of them including what they say is that it tamped to shut down the new york stock exchange so why would you want to put your money in a day if you can get these activists will be out on the street thursday may be may even have a bigger crowd now than they were expecting to have before this secret police very pleased in zuccotti park he's a marine important i live in new york for us thanks for that report chip remember we're keeping a close eye on the nationwide standoff between police and occupy protesters so stay with us we're going to keep covering it from video of the protests you can log on to our you tube channel where our views who seek out and are also following developments from the scene you can visit her twitter page and get the latest information and updates. moscow is hosting a high profile. as of syria's opposition in the latest attempt to urge them toward
7:08 am
talks with their country's government and it comes a day after the kremlin slammed western countries for backing syrian anti regime forces in an attempt to overthrow the regime of bashar assad that's more get more on this remark he's here over a live outside the foreign ministry in moscow while moscow has been trying to bring both sides in the talks together for months now it's the significance of this latest effort in speaking with the opposition. well that's right this isn't the first time we've seen representatives from the syrian opposition all from the syrian government here in moscow russia is living up to its promise to act as a mediator the toughest of its services throughout is a mediator in this conflict in syria now today what we've heard from leading syrian opposition members is that they are opposed to any form of international intervention in syria they are standing in agreement with russia on not of course russia having blocked a u.n.
7:09 am
resolution against syria which could have led to any type of international intervention the syrian opposition saying that they do not want to see their country go down the same road as libya they also said that they are willing to open negotiations with the syrian government however they said they would only do so with members of the government who did not have guns bloodied by murder so they didn't say exactly which elements of the syrian government they were willing to talk to put that offer is there and they're willing to sit down and negotiate now they also said that they wanted russia to be a part of these negotiations the syrian opposition leaders thanking their russian hosts calling them their russian brothers helping them to try and come to a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis in syria president assad is running out of allies even among his neighbors and the arab league what impact is that having
7:10 am
on this. well that's right side scully finds himself essentially from the region the the arab league having turned their back on him deciding on saturday that they were going to suspend syria from the league will be confirmed in emergency meeting on wednesday and fact the first leader of the arab world has come out and said this. should consider his position the king of jordan king abdullah saying that if he was in assad's position he would be considering stepping down now all of this is true on the text the suspension of syria from the arab league. dismay from russia said to love but also foreign minister is calling it counterproductive to a peaceful the peace negotiations saying that it's doing suspending syria from the arab league showed the opposition that perhaps they should try and fight harder for regime change as head of sitting down and talking things out now. what we're
7:11 am
hearing is this the insane syria on the streets of damascus thousands of people have been out protesting against this suspension from the league of their country thousands of people on the streets of damascus other cities as well and in damascus they're hearing that there were protests outside of the saudi arabian and the qatari embassy two nations which voted to suspend syria from the arab league right our computer our live outside the court ministry in moscow thanks for that report. britain's in pole position to take the lion's share of the spoils of libya's vast postwar oil reserves london city executives have been offered lucrative oil and gas contracts as the national transitional council's touting business opportunities to foreign investors or keys or a smith has more from london. the effort to topple gadhafi was an effort that was initially led by the u.k. and also france and the u.k.
7:12 am
sent in its air force and it also used its navy to make a naval blockade around libya and now the national transitional council in libya is saying that its friends will be rewarded and these are not just words we've seen a couple of trips in the last two weeks or so earlier this month the u.k. department of trade and industry of working party to libya to have a look around see what needed doing what needed rebuilding and now the national transitional council has come to london to hold a meeting with top city business executives to drum up interest in what they're calling a massive opportunity to rebuild libya so what we're seeing really is this direct correlation between participation in the effort to oust gadhafi and contracts that are awarded afterwards and we know that libya has the biggest oil reserves in africa but this seems to give more fuel to that argument seems to make it more
7:13 am
obvious that the constant professions of this humanitarian goals seem to have been made a mockery of by this and as someone said to me last week we form you know we destroy and now we get the contract to rebuild the place and that there is this seemingly direct correlation as i say and we also heard at the time of reports of evidence of ordering before nato even got involved in this we've heard reports that the national transitional council told the french that if they sent in there was planes then the libyans eventually which awards to tell the french oil company thirty five percent of all contracts up for grabs and for the u.k. of course which which is looking like it could be one of the main players in this this is turned out to be excellent business estimates vary as to how much the the war cost the u.k. but it was sort of circled around half a billion dollars now and now we're looking at thirty billion dollars in contracts

up for grabs over the next ten years so it certainly looks like an excellent investment. stay with us here on r.t. still to come the radio station with something of an enigmatic message. it doesn't sound like much but this bizarre noise has sparked interest among radio and whose ears will the world over it we take a look at what it could mean and where it's coming from in a few minutes. but first in italy the newly appointed prime minister mario monti is at the head of is hard at work creating a new technocrat government there it's expected to be made up of experts rather than politicians aimed at rescuing the country from its towering debt crisis once the teams of the premier designate will face a confidence vote in parliament that could be as soon as this week till then he'll need to work around the clock to reduce italy's deficit and boost its economic growth meanwhile in greece lucas papademos says he's determined to keep the country

in the euro zone a newly elected fifteen week coalition government has to approve a new one hundred thirty billion euro bailout deal our business editor need for take a look at how the union it went bad it brought once proud nation to their needs. it was supposed to bring peace and prosperity for all but for a while it did but now the euro is costing people jobs their pensions and even the democratic rights from the beginning the floors were there for everyone to see the skeptics the economies of the likes of italy and greece which is too different from germany in finland to be regulated by one system but hope to meet some of the idealism curried that the new currency was pulled it was strong and stable and was regulated in ways that german central bank might approve of there really the seeds of the problem greece italy portugal and spain had their hands on a strong currency and borrowing against it unlike before the interest rates they would have to pay would be much less so they could board much more which is what
7:16 am
they did italy currently has a bit to g.d.p. ratio around one hundred and twenty. percent greece is more than one hundred sixty percent that's a bit like somebody with an income of twenty thousand dollars a year i mean thirty two thousand on their credit card they will be bankrupt the banks when the many more money the flat screen t.v. will be repossessed and would be of cabbage and potatoes in the worst case. in similar for a country but instead public police cars and thousands of people forced out of the jobs before your greece and italy always had the possibility of devaluing the currency when times would this have the effect of lowering total debt and of conferring a competitive advantage as products of this is came cheaper and this stimulated economic growth it also made people poorer as the money in their pockets was worth less but crucially it did not result in mass redundancies especially not imposed by a foreign power under

explanation of his purpose is much more down to earth one of the first for this sort of connections to stream a reliable it will shut down in case of a large nuclear explosion but only for a few hours and it's not dependent on anything that's why it's still widely used today by the army the idea is pretty simple a new t.v. radio station sends out the buzzer which is received by other army bases and by stopping the gaza operator signals that a command called off the letters and numbers is about to be broadcast and when the transmission is complete the buzzer goes on again give us our said moscow's radio spot in community nor would a signal used to come from the south side of the capitol but this is what we saw there and this man is the only living soul we could find. on the spot. work it would be instilled with you by. a little bit of business used to be one of the best units in the country but two years ago we received an order to shut it we were told

well let's clear some of the air here on our business news next with me. thanks now that happened very spooky story like this one business is a breath of fresh air isn't it top officials from the world's leading gas so exporting countries are meeting in between them they hold more than two firms of the world's gas reserves and they're some of the same that balancing the interests of both producers and consumers and our discussion of similar topics is underway in moscow at the annual gas of russia forum business artie's money the cost of. some of the main issues so far have been pricing innovation and competition and it's no secret that many european countries are dissatisfied right now with russia's gas because it links its import rates to oil prices and many believe that given the current market conditions russia should rethink its pricing of formula at the same
7:26 am
time today ministers meeting. are considerably turning to a price linked to save long term gas contracts and russia's energy minister who is in qatar right now outlined his main concerns for us. firstly the supremacy of the long term gas contracts with which. i will stick to it in future secondly it's the principle of linking natural gas prices to oil. we believe that natural gas should not cost less than a crude just because natural gas means high ecological requirements and this should be priced in. energy demand is skyrocketing around the world and russia's role is crucial to meeting that demand also germany wants to ban this nuclear energy it will need to build new power stations worth around fifteen billion dollars and russia's energy minister already said that russia is prepared to finance that large

scale project and we also heard from the vice president of gas. energy the mad expected to increase dramatically and in the next twenty years there will need an extra three hundred billion cubic meters of gas and that additional lives may have to build the nordstrom gas pipeline when it comes to the immediate future gas from has already forecast an increase in european selznick's over around eight per cent and of course will be more volumes now with a newly launched north stream gas pipeline so it's really essential for jasper to iron out its differences with its european counterparts. look at the markets this. speculation that europe will struggle to the. a stack crisis providing some support for prices high expectations that are import by the u.s. embassy the problems of joint wednesday may show declining fuel stockpiles in the us light sweet is down around half a dollar per barrel and brant is up just once. european markets are lower euro zone
