at least one hundred arrests as a mass demo gets underway in new york with thousands of protesters filling the streets to mark two months of occupy rallies police using sound cannon to disperse the crowds were live in lower manhattan. russia's foreign minister says external forces of the liberally trying to the situation in syria to justify a possible intervention. and fresh protests across italy greece in a warning to the two country's new prime ministers who plan to pull nations out of debt with yet more cuts.
11:01 am
hello this is r t is adrian first day night here in moscow my name's kevin zero in on our top story violent arrests are taking place in new york where a huge anti wall street rallies are underway hundreds of activists are marching across the city pledging to occupy streets bridges in the subway in protest against economic inequality that is one of the poorest rina hi there these demonstrators are promising on the biggest action since the movement began exactly two months ago take us through exactly what's happening now. having about three hours into this day long occupy wall street and marking that to mind the first three of this movement that began here in new york ways around the country so far as you mentioned dozens of people have been arrested the scene by like matches between police officers and the optimism that have been walking through the men who are
11:02 am
both men and women who to the ground get arrested hauled off in their hands police before we came up to me police were just securing the barricades that right now. to me here riot police are all around all around just sound and have already been used on the crowds that have been working for lower manhattan while i've been reporting and monitoring the events on one side of wall street my colleague archies up first want to see happen off has been in the epicenter of the demonstrations she was a part of it she just came up to me about a minute before we went live i want to bring her in on this because i want to ask her what she's seen so far lucy i know that you were monitoring it you were actually filming was taking place and police were arresting people violently in some cases and you got hit with a toddler not right basically i was trying to video there's a bunch of police officers who took out a large barricade and were pushing protesters into the ground people look like they were getting injured i was trying to film this as i approached the crowd
11:03 am
a police officer yelled at me to get away before i had a chance to react he swung his baton and hit me here in the shoulder i mean it wasn't that intense but it was just a shock especially because as you can see i have my press pass clearly in march in front of me there's another photographer that was also shot that we just witnessed the arrest of and indeed a media reporter she was slammed against the wall and taken away in handcuffs and we have video that it does not seem like the police are making distinctions between press and protesters and again from what i personally see and all the protesters are using civil disobedience actions either sitting down chanting not provoking the police i don't really understand they haven't had the tactics at this point to get the impression that they are ready to make a rest stop on a moment's notice or are they are we being told something are you know criminal takes place because it seems as though as soon as somebody out one of the activists step foot on the street they're ready to arrest which is ironic because i'm sure who knew that stepping off of the curb as that crime worthy of getting slammed down
11:04 am
to the ground them and handcuffed and having your next step down which is something that we've actually seen in films that mean they're not pulling people randomly off the street but they're definitely it seems like they're making the rules as they go along and it's really difficult to stay on the good side of. the law even as a reporter when you're asking whether you can stand and it doesn't seem like they're making a distinction if you're in the way you're in the way and you risk arrest and i mean i'm guessing there has to be what five thousand police officers down here at the very least maybe more helicopters flying overhead i mean if you like the militarized police and it doesn't really feel like downtown new york all the streets are closed off there's all these police officers and so many protesters too i just don't know how the rest of the day is going to play out especially since we know there's going to be so many more people joining up with the protest later on this evening when the unions and other organizers come out it could get really ugly that's right and kevin of course we are going to be following and monitoring this story throughout the day as we see mentioned is events are planned all day long the activists are going to be going into the subways later on occupying with they say
11:05 am
our parks and it's going to kill many with labor unions joining the occupying power to this side in their in their fight for restructuring of the economy of the wealthy quality and then the large group is going to walk across the brooklyn bridge and remember when that first walk across the brooklyn bridge took place fifty six weeks ago that's when eight hundred people were arrested at one time so clearly this is you know this is still leading hopefully it doesn't get violent but we will be monitoring the story as the full set. of twitter feeds as well as get the information through thanks so much will become. just a bunch of course as well if you want to see more of what's happening there in new york. for you and for more reaction now to the occupy movement. police brutality. nice a very good evening she thanks for being on so much appreciate you joining us there
11:06 am
from. new york yes that's right. the police are being criticized for their harsh response during the occupy pro. system how do you assess their actions in recent weeks cutting by what you personally have seen. the police that's their mechanism is to be violent that's how they always are they walk around with nightsticks and guns and mace and tasers that's the very point to keep the one percent safe from the ninety nine percent and that's what they've always done and i see a lot of people are like becoming like aware of this and like they're surprised at all why i got hit with a baton but time they like to mange the old lady but the nature of the state is to keep its well to keep that one percent with the most wealth and to way they do that you know when they when they went in they murdered all the native american people when they're going over to iraq and afghanistan just a murder people for well it's you know they haven't done anything wrong and it's
11:07 am
nothing to do with their sort of people are going to it's not there you can mask a beast that's already on mantz the net the beast no one is doing it it's calculated and that's what they always do ok and we know what your cause is a big part of the way the police are handling this the police of course they're saying protesters are disturbing public order therefore they need to be moved. do they have any much of a fair point there that's all i know it's basically it doesn't really legality and laws are hearsay they make them they break they go around and they do whatever they want to it's just based upon power it's a power dynamic if the protesters have enough people then they won't be able to be stopped and there will be everyone arrested if people are not willing to engage in strong tactics and have good strategy then they'll lose it's it just boils down to like. power you know they have guns and they'll do what they'll do if people don't
11:08 am
resist and be victorious ok three new york buffalo new york thanks for giving us your thoughts on the program's appreciated just like you know as well that bit later this. technique tells us why the occupy movement is about american civil rights as well as wall street wealth. the idea of america is to give democracy and freedom to people but i think that now more than ever it's become about placating and about pacified so they don't put the amount of freedom that they're guaranteed almost like bill clinton that you seem to know you're right. that happens more and more i mean even if you want to make this entirely about occupy wall street even the people that yelled at me to every single occupy wall street that are sitting there holding the law legal to this still see this civil rights movement every single this is excuses left and right now we want to clean
11:09 am
the park to move very well the. situation in syria is playing a dramatize way external forces to pave the way for a possible international military intervention but is the very view of russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov and called on all sides to stop the violence and begin talks but he has the latest from moscow. for some very strong words from russia's foreign minister silvio was been talking about the situation in and around syria basically he's been saying that the violence is continuing and the tension is continuing to rise as well and it's sad that some states are actually pushing to accelerate this process. for observing how the external players are trying to use the confrontation in syria perhaps striving to traumatise the situation in media and gain additional browne's for a possible intervention in syria affairs however everyone denies it on the right
11:10 am
course we feel some countries have such my fans. russia has been strongly criticizing the violence going on in syria throughout the entire conflict but moscow has been stressing that this is a serious internal matter to be solved through peaceful dialogue between the of stories in the country and the opposition and the foreign minister is once again called on both sides to put their weapons down. violence is being spread not only by the authorities but by the opposition as well what bones are still being smuggled into syria and situation there looks as if it's really on the brink of a civil war scenario also stressed that the a libyan scenario cannot be repeated just peaceful dialogue between all parties that's the only way according to moscow. britain's reportedly being the king of jordan to take the lead in a diplomatic drive against syria after the u.k.'s key role in libya's colonel
11:11 am
gadhafi international pressure continues to pile up on president assad has been given till saturday now to hold crackdowns on protesters will face more isolation it comes as russia warns against taking sides bennett's quote with intel's. britain's been picked his team captain along with transport least one arab country to lead a libya style contact group now their task at the moment is a diplomatic one to coordinate policy between arab countries and the west in what would be a verbal offensive putting pressure on president assad it could indeed end with him being forced to step down over details of this most following a meeting between british prime minister david cameron and king abdullah of jordan earlier took place earlier this week in london cancel or is actually the first arab leader to publicly course with president assad to step down and he's believed also to prefer britain and france over america to lead any such mission because of the success they had in libya where they led military intervention the ousted colonel gadhafi now there's no mention of any such military activity with syria at the
11:12 am
moment at the moment this is truly the offensive is clearly verbal but that is of course how the libya intervention and operation started is already several similarities france and all the already recalled their ambassador from damascus and of course the timing with the militarization of the opposition which would make any kind of intervention a lot easier to support. if germany to stop the war coalition says the lessons of libya should be learned the arab league. as it was in libya. the ideas of the arab league against syria there must be. dreadfully wrong with syria we should learn the lessons of thousands and thousands of civilians died after the nato bombing began nato bombing or any other intervention any other military intervention in syria will have even more serious consequences because of the regional threat the whole question of iran the whole question of israel will

come much much more to the fore and our problems will lead to a much more substantial war in the region which is the last thing that anybody really needs. now on our website r.t. dot com we're asking you you what you think is going to how near what do you think is going to play out in syria what you've been telling us almost forty percent of you are convinced that nato will intervene with or without u.n. backing it is pretty to see it as sad twenty three percent of you say that nato wouldn't dare get involved militarily for fear of sparking a new and very bloody war in the region but a fifth of you this believe that syria simply too strong on that assad has got too much support to be overthrown and about the same amount of games you see eighty percent there think that nato will intervene oust president assad but without u.n. backing that's so far so plenty of time to listen to what you think about this big story r.t. dot com is the place to do it. thousands of greeks have taken the streets of athens
