five pm in moscow i matras are good to have you with us here on r.t. our top story hundreds of arrests multiple injuries have been the result of a massive day of action across the us by occupy wall street protesters tens of thousands of activists against corporate greed took part in rallies in key cities across the u.s. marking two months of the movement but several met with a heavy police response officers in riot gear armed with the tongs and shields were accused of brutality against mostly peaceful demonstrators the focal point was of course new york where crowds took to the bridges the subway and even try to disrupt the stock exchange to make their frustration heard artie's lucy carter was at the heart of the protests. we're standing on the brooklyn bridge in new york city where the occupy wall street protesters are marching on this is the final and the big.

just around effectivity and it had taken place on day two month anniversary of the occupy wall street movement that began right here in new york on september seventeenth what began as a location of a small park near wall street had turned into a nationwide movement that spread to unfreeze all the possible worlds from one to two was tokyo cities all across the globe but the braised and the message that these protesters are putting out which is the frustrated with corporate greed the control of the little pussy the system as they perceived by the few corporate elites i doze with but means of the wealth and the inability for the average american to essentially put food on the table to live the middle class lifestyle these are some of the demands some of the frustrations that the protesters here have expressed and it is what we are seeing spreading across the country now the events in new york city have been spence filled with extreme tension many classes with these officers and the protesters following the raid that took place not only
8:03 am
in new york city but across the country in many of the occupations from oakland to denver to portland to all kinds of other cities many arrests we have seen unfortunately a lot of instances of a seemingly unprovoked the taliban by the police force in many cases the protestors were simply sitting perhaps standing in an area that's a little bit too close to the sidewalk they were met with brute force by the police department many of them slammed down onto the ground and cops and physically dragged away we occupy wall street movement was really for us into the spotlight following the mass arrests that were witness on this very bridge the brooklyn bridge several weeks ago where seven hundred protesters were handled by police netting and arrested and massive for the most part whether or not their message will actually result in policy changes remains to be seen but they're certainly being heard by the press by the residents and by countless americans all across the united states reporting for our team on the brooklyn bridge i'm to seek out the no

earlier argue spoke with the leader in a senior correspondent for the independent media routes news group who believes the police are purposefully going beyond the call of duty to try and if the protests in the bud. clearly the rule we're seeing here is. to really crush and be occupied rafique movements clearly there are trying to hit the protesters with the shock and awe and try to then they turned back fired and so now they're trying to find different pretext i think that in the united states to be with the w t o i don't see our situation you know the russians are really learned a lesson enough nonviolent direct action and it's really very effective and the sort of open shutdown it's really sent a message to the political establishment that you know people really see who the two parties be catered to and they're really fed up with it and they're just not going to stand for it anymore so that's why we're seeing. correspondents are

8:06 am
signed today between russia belarus and kazakhstan and it basically lays the groundwork for an envision you raise an economic union the aim there to promote more trade and economic cooperation with the asia pacific region what it would do is it would create a new market with united legislation and that would create three clear flow human resources as well as services this is what president medvedev had to say about the advantages this union would have in comparison to the e.u. . is because like we won't repeat the mistakes of the european union in our integration we're conscious of what we're doing we understand why we integrate and when there are three countries sharing a common history and should say we're forming c. coleman economy that is why we start not on different levels but from similar positions the european union took a shot in the dark to some extent the jewish and its good friends i'm sure we will be able to create a solid and stable economic union but most importantly i think it was pointed out
8:07 am
by the three leaders today was that this will protect them from the economic crisis that spreading of europe in the global and some analysts even go as far as to say is that it could in fact help in reverse the global economic downturn that we're seeing some who knows in the future we could be saying the e.u. as common as we say the e.u. today. on our website r.t. dot com we will like to know what you think about the eurasian union so far most think it's a better version of the european union about thirty percent of yours don't have any idea of what it is the rest are you can we split between being a new way for bureaucrats to embezzle state funds or reincarnation of the u.s.s.r. what do you think. yourself. or the economy professor alexander lipman says the regime union will boost competition and help discipline the finances of the member states. well for one thing which is going to have an intensified. competition between companies we observe it already now and we see
8:08 am
that it's clearly benefits there including increases the efficiency of the russian companies as well as the companies of soviet countries another benefit which is clearly to be taken into account is there restoration of the existing economic ties of the creation of the new russian companies have been very actively exploring the post soviet space in the last decade also in kazakhstan they have been present quite actively so that you raise an economic union is likely to give a boost here supporting this developments and in some sense it will create competition between governments what's also good today many russian companies at least claim to be considering migration to kazakhstan which has a lower tax rates so it will discipline russian government itself as well. stay with r.t. for more details on this story including this. in fifteen minutes time doing business we've talked to the chief strategist of the troika the

forcing president bashar al assad out to mcginn with it will be a diplomatic offensive but russia appease it's an overreaction that could pave the way for military intervention. we suggest that in order to put the arab initiative in place all countries concerned with a peaceful outcome of developments in syria should demand not only from the syrian authorities but also from the opposition to stop their violence the ongoing attacks on government buildings in syria look like a civil war. at the moment there's no mention of military action from britain their offensive is purely verbal for now but that's exactly how the libyan intervention began and the timing is very similar to the opposition in syria is now militarized making them much easier to support and adds more weight to any international threats. from house or. provide for them to. learn the lessons of.

our nato or any other instrument than any other military intervention will have even more serious consequences because of the regional threat our question of the whole question of israel the u.k. is apparently mean handed its leading role by king up to law of jordan so far the only arab leader to publicly call for an answer to quit but the patience of syria's other neighbors and crucial regional brokers' is now wearing thin to the arab league suspended series membership and given presents as sad until saturday to end the violence with britain already primed this could be the last ditch attempt at conventional diplomacy they're in a position now where they have to take some action because in effect by the extent of the region that likes what yesterday another difference or another three days or so perhaps they're trying to offer us out as much as possible in order to keep having opportunity for having sort of taken gregson that they've gone this far

they may both be pressing for action to resolve the e.u. debt crisis but approaches are worlds apart german and british leaders meeting in berlin to thrash out a possible solution to all of this for more on this we're joined live by our he's laura smith of london so laura what's been said by chancellor merkel and prime minister cameron so far. well prime minister cameron has now held me promise to come around and chant. for help they're meeting now and they ended it with a short media conference at which they were all smiles this is not nothing less than we expected i mean it's an expression of politicians after all they're on like you to sling mud at each other in front of the world's press they really should make nice with each other this morning they said that they do have
8:15 am
a different sense for the difference that can be overcome and of course they're dealing with what is a an economic and fiscal union essentially on the brink of collapse we've seen that it's only now and entirely on elected government bureaucrats france and spain we see in the cost of borrowing in those two countries saw. at the moment fifty thousand people out in the streets of athens precessing against what they see as e.u. in full still staring now merkel solution to all that is basically more europe she says that there should be more integration there should be more national governments on the you can do the heel of brussels much like it's in the east now isn't common solution to that one in in europe at the moment it's less integration he says he sort of talks yearningly over a over union which has flexibility which is really the complete opposite to to michael's approach to germany and luxembourg now today or is he just using the u.k.
8:16 am
of selfishness and shortsightedness they're saying that they won't suit the pace of bailouts the countries that are suffering a bit more and they say that the u.k. is quick to criticize but very slow to actually step in and help and also heavily indebted countries like person who are doing markedly worse than countries like germany should just keep their mouths shut they shouldn't offer advice about how to handle the syrian crisis so there are various disagreements disagreements over the mode of the u.s. european central bank should it be a lender of last resort or not. it's about the level of integration merkel wants more integration in the eurozone which cameron worries what's called sort of two tier europe and then and then pressing would be left out in the cold and buckled once in that too many concessions then that that's what will happen that this two tier europe will be created also disagreements about a tax on financial transactions once it doesn't so basic differences in approach.

all right arjun laura smith live for us and lot of. italy and greece is a new government store fresh out of the box but already enduring unfriendly welcomes from thousands of angry protesters not of prime ministers committed to extremely unpopular bad solutions including budget press and tax hikes but it's hard to use our first reports on restraint our security may carry an even higher price tag for future generations. students flock to the streets across the silly greece they cause of protests ringing loud and clear opposing what they call bank is governments and the economic situation this christening teaches us i'm young maybe this is the problem. with peter paul close in age with me and. they feel alone these students have a lot to be unhappy about the dire economic situation has seen youth unemployment

hit crippling levels in the struggling economy and despite recent political labels in greece and italy they say the public and the markets remain unconvinced that viable solution has now been found here is a need are struggling to get a handle on the crisis we've gone back to school with come here to the university of the garter to speak to some of the youngest brightest economic minds in the country find out what they think should be done something. about drought. if you try. to start since. you have a little world of water. with growth growth in the stagnating economy has proved one of the major challenges in an age of the e.u. imposed the stereo.

technocrat government is now firmly in place mary monti and lucas papademos are undeniable well set with their experience to face the tough challenges ahead but at sixty eight and sixty four respectively spring chickens with an aging political class around then there's the seemingly little room for the younger generation to have their say we have to think of the future if we want to think of the future we have to. include young people and media criticism since the beginning of this crisis it has been the inability of hear anything leaders to react quickly to the shifting economic circumstances and to adapt your reasons he could well now rest on the political guys who play think a new approach so i think. professor yanis

varoufakis says his country is a sacrifice their sovereignty to brussels but it's likely to have been in vain greece has lost its national sovereignty just like it heads under linux leadership sixty seven i'm sorry for those who only have this government because it was. well you have been some time back in european commission and if the. quality eludes as well as going to people were supposed to muse enough to meet. you . you have a new government which will if you really allow us can a degree of confidence that both major political parties and sign of the. green union agreement to the crisis or of there will be no more trenches of the. difficulty here what is hard for. is a. great future are there not in any investment and.

just like all those bridges before last year and a half. almost. terminal stuff only. you can afford. without giving anyone and all the more hope of some improvement in a crisis flaw in the lives of ordinary people. russia's anti-drug chief wants the u.s. to ramp up its efforts in tackling afghan heroin production even all told his counterparts in chicago there needs to be more concerted efforts to wipe out the root cause rather than targeting drug smuggling among the initiatives would be high tech tracking to find where the opium is coming from even of says it would be available to everybody to help fight against production afghanistan is responsible for ninety percent of the world's heroin much of that flooding into russia
8:22 am
production of the narcotic has soared since the u.s. led invasion a decade ago. take a look now at what's going on with the world of business i don't hate next with dimitri stay with us. franks mad well as we have been reporting free nations have agreed to create a new region economic union russian president and his counterparts from cover stand a better route have agreed on further integration while many are applauding the moves some wanted smacks the recreate of the soviet union was not thought of chris we've heard from for a good dialogue maybe shed some light on what this is all about chris very good to see you in the studio so what do you think is the principal difference between what we have right now we've done the bill of rights which is a person's union and what they've agreed to create ok well what we have right now is basically an agreement that it will allow easier trade access across borders
8:23 am
between the three countries so companies will be able to to to if you like the degree the some of the administrative barriers and the cost customs duties that are in place will be removed and we know that comes into place from early next year what's been talked about there is taking down the stair further and to some extent will be towards or like a mini european union so much greater integration if you like of economic policies rather than just making it easier to trade across borders does this mean that they're moving along the model which has been seen in europe for what fifty years moving towards a monetary union a common a common currency it's a big step and i think you know what we're actually looking at here is maybe just closer integration and sort of a monetary policy rather than monetary union monetary union as we already know is a fairly discredited or shall we say at risk principle that's because of what's happening with the euro zone and the fact that their weakest members of the euro
8:24 am
zone principle now greece of portugal learned before that are affecting if you like the core of the stronger accord germany in particular so they'll have to be a complete reassessment i think in the wake of what we do will become to do the post mortem hopefully we will have a chance to do a post-mortem on what's happening in europe and i think that's. have a significant impact on how unions like this one proposed will develop but i think right now what you're really talking about it just really close to gather in terms of economic policies and economic objectives i think this where we're not talking about monetary union to stage and i think the whole european union kind of crisis has really put a whole question mark over whether even that's a long term desirable objective well russia kazakhstan and belarus their economies are fundamentally different it's a public stand that counts for basically three percent of the trade turnover with russia would you say that this is more of a taker wrote. a union or racial well look i mean i think the reason for the
8:25 am
objective of the customs union to be c. is zero seats to improve that you know to make it easier for russian companies as well as cars or companies to do more business with each other because that level of . interaction that gets between two former soviet countries g countries that were very close together in the past you know and has been allowed follow fall away so the customs union is designed to bring that closer and to increase the level of business it's too low right now you know the odd one out there is better routes to some extent and its economy is is in a much less favorable position than either russia has extended course the difference is it doesn't have oil it doesn't have natural resources to export with the other two countries do and remember kazakstan is well chosen the next couple of years hopefully will bring the kashagan oil field a million barrels of oil a day or you feel downstream and that will substantially improve its economy in economic position if you like and then rejects that balance with russia to some
8:26 am
extent but bella who says the question and of course the big problem right now is there is russia joins w t o has expanded already you know that it was not. really there are no answers as to how this customs union is going to you know be accepted by the w t o or what might have exactly russia for eighteen. years there's been trying to access the w c o it's been taking different approaches to it all sort of filing an application for it as a customs union with with kazakhstan goes how is this really going to all work out now that russia is finally agreed and it's going to just seal the can in a couple weeks well obviously you know it's been a big political priority both from russia's side and the u.s. europe to get russia to the w t o this year only a year ago the fact that the customs union was happening to belarus is not w t o this appeared to be you know a major obstacle plenty of people were talking about how the difficulties in in this arrangement that's been swept away in the last six months it's hardly been
8:27 am
mentioned but you're right it's there's a big question mark over what happens in practice you know goods come from better routes into russia for example and then or export it out to europe you know is that a back door will they have to be labelled c origination bill ruth i mean there's a lot of technical questions here that you know have to be answered and yet to be to be to be worked out i think the bottom line is of course that with the customs union and the move towards you can only can close this region gratian then we know hope these developments we get dragged into the b.t.o. relatively quickly as well one final question chris before russia used to provide cheap energy resources like oil and gas to countries like the roof for example what is what is russia now offering now that it's a drop at the local prices well it's still offering cheap energy of course but that's now been in the back of a power. of acquiring assets of gas for now on state substantially the transit system in exchange for the cheap assets but i think what they're really offering is
8:28 am
is this economic integration or easier trade access so that you know better if companies in theory should be able to more easily access the russian market and that might help them grow old so we still see subsidies particularly that arose from moscow but the idea is that the subsidies will help the loose industries grow on the back of exporting to the russian market all right chris weaver chief strategist it's work as i look thank you so much for your time for your insights. fred that's all we have time for in this edition of the business news but do join us in around fifty five minutes i will be here with an uptick.
