from violence to. start on t.v. dot com. michael martin thousands gathered on cairo's tahrir square for mass protests planned as a final call for military rulers to hand over power as the most violent rallies in egypt since the barracks fall into this second week. once those regimes are overthrown pandora's box is open france is fresh initiative to set up a humanitarian corridor in syria is widely seen as a first step towards military intervention in the country that's been ripped apart by violence. and preparations are in place for a possible escalation of violence in northern cos of a local service a nato forces broke earlier agreements were trying to tear down a border barrack

a move that's led to fierce clashes. hello it's eleven pm friday night here in moscow you're watching r t with me kevin zero in on our top story cairo's tahrir square is packed with people gathered staying there after friday prayers with the threat of continued violence hanging in the recent clashes have seen more than forty people killed since saturday as angry protesters call for the military authorities to hand over power to civilian government policy has the latest from cairo. kane's of thousands of protesters a full cry from the million that the organizers had hopeful that a substantial amount nonetheless now the rallying point here is much the same people wanting the minute he to step down immediately and amenity despite the

concession of appointing come out guns ari as the new prime minister has done little to meet the demands of the people the mines has continued although not at the levels we've witnessed in the past few days as you can hear behind me there are ambulances streatch and cost the human rights groups have also stated that in addition to the fact that the army and the police be using live ammunition to meet those who were killed were killed while trying to help others we also are not hearing sad reports that families have been gathering at cairo's main mall to be tied into fire they loved ones many of them sobbing and urging and message to waste amigas to stop changing the bombs gas and weapons because they leaders are killing them from within now he i have one of the protesters who is behind this sharif chose of risk who is a founding member of the new republic group sharif why does the appointment of a new prime minister change nothing well ironically they appointed

a prime minister that was straight from ninety six to ninety nine he represented all of the the dark policies of mubarak the far right economic policies. the rise of him because of him there were a number of the rise in unemployment in egypt. a lot of what's attributed to the economic could disparate asperity it was iterated to policies like his first of course his human rights abuses with the slums on monday we'll see a return to the parliamentary elections one of the big questions here was the role of tear gas over the past week and here we hearing from human rights speaks that has possible eagle substance has been used and of a growing concern is just how safe it is full of women reporters and a would. in protest as in turkey is where at least we female journalists have been sick she assaulted and i continue to freaking around town here just a short time ago i was feeling incredibly unsafe much more uncertain and has been feeling over the past few days. discuss these latest developments in egypt now with
2:04 pm
. joins us live from beirut as research universe since we were this spring revolution in egypt was hailed by many as a victory for democracy at the time wasn't it but it now looks like is far from over with the military rulers apparently clinging on the power of the protesters are calling this are they last chance friday last friday before the parliamentary elections monday is it really the last chance do you think well thank you for having me on of course it seems like the last chance each time because everybody's been working so hard and put so much effort into changing the government but of course changing government takes a lot longer then you know however many of the eighteen days for the initial revolution the transition is always going to be. difficult and often undemocratic in many ways so i think this is really wonderful that we see egyptians going into here again because it means that they're going to continue to fight for the
2:05 pm
revolution they're not willing to give it up it's clear that the military is tempted to try to preserve as much power and democratic power as possible and egyptians are basically going to the street in saying no this is not ok so this is not the last chance this is the underlying. continuing revolution which is really nice to see egypt is fading for the latest positioning of the muslim brotherhood they were thought to be the driving force behind the original protest but now we have formed some kind of alliance with the military not backing these protests was seeing tonight was behind you. well of course the muslim brotherhood is going to be very cautious with any transition because they were highly persecuted for the last however many decades i mean they've been really put in a bad position. by the former regime and so many suffered and they were so secretive so of course now they're going to be much more pragmatic with dealing with the military powers that are still in control i don't think that they're going
2:06 pm
to be totally removed from what the people on the street want and surely some of their members and some of the breakaway members are out in the streets now but it is understandable that the muslim brotherhood would sort of step back from the protests today for example because they want to do well in the elections on monday and it makes sense for them to still so public face in the process they want to put it out to the egyptian people that it is still worth going to the polls and i think it is worth it if it is going to the polls trying this democracy they may not get it right on the first time but they have to keep on trying and also fighting i think both compliance and resistance are really essential for a healthy democracy so your views the. arab league meeting yesterday. all this was there was discuss what was going on in syria the or. what was going on outside the cairo why do you think they turned a blind eye to what something all their own thoughts. i know that's
2:07 pm
a great question and i think it's easy for a lot of the arab leaders to turn a blind eye to what's going on here square especially when to their interests of saudi arabia or buffering places where they're really happy to use excessive violence to squelch their own protesters and of course you know we had a report released this week range and it was a very human soul to the ruling regime basically the accusations were that there was torture that there was a violence and that this was all highly marginalizing the shia population and so there we have the evidence in bahrain of all of these crimes being committed in the arab league doesn't seem to be interested in something like that at all they really are only interested in persecuting those member states to show some sort of resistance to i believe the west pretty europe and america and israel so we have a huge double standard going on right now with the arab league they're not focusing
2:08 pm
on problems it's really are agreed to us in those countries that have western backing and any country that doesn't have western backing they're just going after really intrusive way especially considering this reaching out to the united nations it's quite unbelievable but the arab league would even begin to contemplate looking to the u.n. for help in syria what influence the u.n. would have in syria is a really large question and one that's hard to answer it would be much more useful having syria's neighbors neighbors that they have good relations with for example levanon or you gone or turkey to come in and try to mediate this not bring in a foreign organization that has a clear bias against the assad regime and has had this violence for decades. from sort of fish university thanks very much. and the flashback comes up in cross talk to on this channel in about twenty minutes time tonight in fact people
2:09 pm
of his latest guests discuss the new uprising and how the u.s. and other western players are reacting to it. is the second chance and they've had a chance to rehearse what they could have said in the case of this little fluff there because they have absolutely no nor kind of consistency they have nor real policy and they have not seen direction and what the what they're hoping at the moment is somehow that the military will gain control and ensure a more kind of transition in favor of their own interests and others for the. whole syria now faces publishing sanctions from the arab league has a diplomat from a body says damascus ignored friday's deadline to accept foreign observers we were france is actively seeking international support for a humanitarian corridor or to be set up in a crisis talk country this is the first time a major power has formally called for foreign intervention in the uprising against

president assad but there are questions to piracies go to efforts artie's tesser said a report. thanks to deliberate intervention of french president nicolas sarkozy bad history go first for his country first to call for nato to impose no fly zone over libya. first to officially recognize the opposition as that it's only rigid about government first to strike with libya and now in the rearview mirror syria appears to be the next stop france is once again but first western nations suggest an international ground intervention in syria calling for a quote secured zone to protect civilians and first to endorse the exiled opposition syrian national council plans is a county with human beings and it's very very popular agreement between most of the left and most of the right at the end sarkozy has to say the intervention so it seems to me that the small even more aggressive than obama would be even though he doesn't have the military strength of the us and sweeping popularity at home is

what circles he needs if he intends to let the french decide his fate as president and the two thousand and twelve elections it's trying to present on the cross are causing talks about the syrian crazies. because you know he's really really. bad situation when it comes to the polls and he's using craziness as a way to. to or to be seen as provocative the way he was with libya but what the french government deems a success doesn't seem to be too promising for those living in the post gadhafi era violent clashes between rival militia groups have continued adding to the death toll a new u.n. report says that some seven thousand people are being held in libya detention centers controlled by militias with no access to courts story functioning judiciary many are still armed scenarios some warn it could be repeated in syria and once

those regimes are overthrown a pound or a box is opened in other words chaos can be the result while one is always happy to see the end of brutal dictatorships and my own view is that these are the ends to these regimes the people themselves critics or frazzles latest move of raise the question of whether any foreign intervention in syria would actually and would watch as well other countries have taken a slightly more cautious step that the french leadership is keen on putting it down and planting its why what of everyone else french assertion is not entirely welcome by syrians themselves a lot of it. actually would not well need to mention. is or even. you can be an opponent of the regime and against boring you conventional fraud against france is psychos he may get out of the prevention in syria even critics wonder if it's really worth it but at least no one could argue about who said it first dozen or so year r.t. crossing to syria. it's thought now the u.s.

is redeployed its nearest aircraft carrier from the persian gulf to the syrian coast washington is also urging american citizens to leave syria immediately some experts believe those moves could be seen as a further step towards a military intervention now over the ground's been prepared for that for some time . the u.s. cannot go in unilaterally in a military fashion because the other coalition of countries or what i call the axis power countries which are the us britain france and israel are acting in concert and supplying the rebels in syria who are all from syria the free syrian army is just over the syrian border in turkey recent reports from major newspapers have cited this force that fifteen thousand strong this is in direct violation of international law the western powers cannot back a rebel military force working against the government in syria which is

a legitimate government just a bit later europe's money continues to run dry as investors run for the hills. personally i think the whole thing will break up but it's proved to be unworkable than britain's getting ready for it too with the country's chief regulator making plans in case of the euro split scenario we've got more about that shortly from also this. the us and belarus thailand matter energy deal guy was get the heavy discount on gas supplies in return russia takes on a hundred percent ownership which favors attack plans for more of the. tensions run high on serbia's border with northern kosovo is neither of the conflicting sides is prepared to rule out a further escalation of violence local service a nato forces are to blame for breaking an agreement by trying to remove a barricade that was blocking the way to one of a number of disputed checkpoints there the move from the violent clashes that left dozens injured on both sides. got the details from kosovo. last night passed
2:15 pm
here in northern koslow without violence does not mean of the source of tension has disappeared two nights ago on the twenty third the native back a force tried to remove a barricade that has been put up by the ethnic serve in minority here it was meant was there for resistance tear gas was used more than twenty people were injured and the operation by the k. four had to be abandoned now yesterday we drove around the area and these barricades which had been up here for around four months there still are manned by people and people are saying that they're not going to abandon them are planning to put up even more of them now to untrained eye these roadblocks these barricades just seem like piles of rubble amateur fully constructed and nobody would think that would be a cause of such a bitter conflict but in order to understand why did we need to go back to july as we know the serbian people here the ethnic serbs are in
2:16 pm
a minority only constitute about ten percent of the population of course alone since the kosovo has been recognized by several countries they've also lost any kind of legal status they still consider themselves citizens of serbia and they still consider their land a part of serbia of course their majority albanian corsa laws do not consider their territories to be independent but so far at least they have been allowed a measure of self-sufficiency in measure of independence and inability to be in contact freely with the mainland serbs now in july they came a threat to this albanian sir that they wanted to control the customs control all the goods and all the cars coming into the area now the serbs didn't just see this as a formality they sort of as an infringement of their remaining freedoms they're calling this a slippery slope first control of the customs then perhaps control of the police coming in here and being able to control the territory and finally the remained of the serbian population at first they put out these barricades. this happening then
2:17 pm
supposedly a compromise solution was found where instead of the albanians being able to take control of customs this control would go to the native baquet for the serbs they did not trust for the case for is basically protecting albanian interests and the kind of clash the resort the night before the case was trying to revive put a service here that's a clear illustration of where their priorities lie and of course we'll keep you updated on the latest developments in northern cause when they happen r.t. to go groton if you just seen there isn't there at the moment the story because tweets we're forwarding was well as he sends them on it says it's not just the standoff with the nato but forces plaguing lives of people in the serbian part of kosovo now as winter is drawing in and also suffering constant i pretty black force in the crowd around fires in follow a correspondence a twitter stream at r.t. underscore crown. british banks are getting ready for euro zone breakup in the
2:18 pm
latest sign that a single currency split may be on the table the risk management plan by a senior u.k. regulator comes as the euro continues to weaken hitting a seven week low now friday professor david milton chairman of the institute of economic affairs says the eurozone leaders have been unable to learn the lessons of their own mistakes. the euro is in such trouble it's obviously not going to continue as it is personally i think the whole thing will break up it's proved to be unworkable one of the lessons is but the people running the eurozone haven't been able to look ahead after all the u.k. a lot of them is the main financial center in europe and it's not surprising that our financial people are used to looking at this part of the trade several of the countries in the eurozone are insolvent and that means really unless they can be ridiculous lee in truth or competitiveness they need to default that is not welcome news and people are trying not to talk about it they keep saying they've got the political will to do whatever is necessary but what we have to remember is this
2:19 pm
whole thing is a political project and it's the political will that has got us into the mess in the first place so i had to r.t. dot com for more the world's news online there you'll find a story tonight pivotal point iran says it's arrested twelve alleged cia agents who supposedly snooping into the country's nuclear program got more about what it's all about online and how's this for a publisher arab world not find out why we see a dedicated bow to the renowned russian jeweler has filled out a million dollars for these breakfast leftovers the details served up at our t.v. dot com. the lead could be further lifted off secret cia prisons across central and eastern europe

a terror suspect who's been held for ten years without charge says he was tortured at a facility in lithuania and he's taking it all to court now the baltic states already admitted housing secret cia detention centers. reports. terror suspect abu zubaida now a guantanamo prisoner has been in washington's hands for almost a decade the allegedly al qaeda recruiter has not been charged with anything just yet however he claims that crimes were in fact committed against him during his interrogation by the cia there is evidence. from us and there are no government records and also from reports of the international committee for the red cross the couple who bear was tortured in the hands of the cia. he was subjected to very cruel treatment for example people markets accuse sions and waterboarding which is a form of market running he seems to have every reason to hold

a grudge against washington but from behind bars by the file the rather surprising lawsuit against lithuania he claims that in two thousand and five he was held in a secret cia prison in the baltic state bears responsibility for its role in percentage taking the operation of the cia program that was obey the request of the european court to recognize him as a victim of and forced disappearance secret detention and torture on a plane and territory to secret cia prison in a small country in central europe that may seem like a conspiracy theory just son but not if he was right activists with the cia planes landing because we have the records of conversation between the premium security officials and between them top politicians b. and b. don't have to argue about the prison it was the question how many people were

input in the prime minister said it's a big deal for both sides it's a socialist in the discount to save at least two billion dollars we also agreed on gas comes acquisition of one hundred percent of the shares of bill trans gas this will ensure the unconditional transit of russian gas to european consumers through the territory of pella reuss but russia is keen to secure its gas transit routes to europe it has the north stream pipeline going straight to germany around twenty percent of its gas goes through to europe but the vast majority still flows through ukraine. this was an important deal with rampant inflation and a trade crisis it needs all the money it can get and it'll raise two and a half billion dollars from the sale of trans gas although some of the russians may feel that they have lost out in losing control of the national assets at the moment
