the. pakistan blocks a vital nato supply route to afghanistan in response to a helicopter strike that's killed up to twenty eight pakistani soldiers and threatens to further strain relations. chaos in cairo with fresh clashes flaring up in tahrir square protesters the new prime minister the cold shoulder and work on forming their own government. and how being blinded by love left this once aspiring us politician homeless and hopeless on the streets of ukraine.
9:01 am
six pm in moscow i match reza good to have you with us here on r t our top story pakistan has cut off the flow of vital nato supplies to afghanistan after a helicopter strike in a volatile border region killed up to twenty eight pakistani soldiers and injured more than a dozen incident may deal a serious blow to ties between the alliance and islamic jihad which are already somewhat strained over a deadly raids in pakistani territory our correspondent in the region prius rita has more. according to the pakistani military nato helicopters actually attacked a military checkpoint on the pakistan afghan border that's not going to called salo law in response to this incident actually ask elated pretty quickly and the pakistani military actually shut down that checkpoint which is the shortest checkpoint between pakistan and afghanistan so now all the supplies that were meant for nato forces in afghanistan are not able to get over the border in the pockets
9:02 am
money military also called this a tap quote unquote unprovoked and indiscriminate nato has acknowledged that there was an incident today but they aren't saying any more than that they're investigating it now nato helicopters are often in this region performing missions against militancy and the taliban in this region caucus son is a very strategic ally to the united states and the quote unquote war on terror and tensions between the two countries have always existed they came to an all time high back in may when the united states performed a unilateral attack that actually all timidly killed osama bin ladin just last year the united states accidentally killed two pakistani soldiers on the border and in that incident as well the pakistan afghanistan border was also shut down there have also been a lot of talk about these unmanned drone strikes that have been going on across the
9:03 am
border by the united states in pockets obviously the purpose of these missions these unmanned drone strikes is to attack the militants across the border so many times they've killed several civilians and after that there were several protests across the country in pakistan many pockets dani's want to cut ties with the united states everyone sort of watching what the repercussions of this incident today will be for the region. there's been a reaction from the pakistani people to the ladies you know what. keeping us up to date dorothy's twitter stream where she says some pakistanis are calling for avenge or it's how you should get the death she also reports that there are people who are considering the dead martyrs. more on developments in pakistan let's talk with john theresa political analyst from the british base stop the war coalition thanks for being with us so there is a growing anti nato sentiment in pakistan how far do you think that might grow after this tragic turn of events. well i think that's hard to predict i'm not at
9:04 am
all surprised that the reaction i think it will grow this is hardly the first problem the pakistani sovereignty has been infringed by the united states it's not the first time the pakistanis to. the united states seems to be the case now that you know. pakistan is a kind of free fire zone in which. to abuse the country's self and free with no need for poetry or redress. when u.s. troops killed osama bin laden in may they claimed it was successful partly because pakistan didn't know about it so how big do you think a deal would be for nato and russia in particular in particular to lose islamabad support. well i think it would be a big issue and it certainly would but whether or not it's a big issue for washington it should be a big issue for the rest of us this is after all pakistan is after all
9:05 am
a nuclear state the region is unstable the relations with india never been settled the outstanding question of kashmir has never been independent of kashmir has never been so i thought the border with afghanistan is used for the constant pretext for drone attacks with inside pakistani territory we know that the u.s. military with regard and in the preferred for the whole area after act as if it's one single single state so i think this is a very very dangerous moment i think what the united states and its allies nato allies have done is an extremely dangerous incursion i'm not surprised at the anger of the pakistani of the pakistani people and i think the message should go very very clearly the united states and its allies you are playing with fire you are risking instability greater instability in an already unstable region and this kind of behavior simply has to start with gangsterism what do you think nato countries could be doing to appease pakistanis anger toward them and if you would these
9:06 am
latest incursions. well i think the most important thing that they've got to do is to get out of afghanistan the root of this problem is the nato occupation of afghanistan it's quite clear after more than ten years now that this occupation has failed it's not stabilized the country it's not cheat any of the goals that we were told it was meant to achieve ten years ago it's simply creating instability first of all with pakistan but more broadly in the region so the one thing that nato could do instantaneously such a different and more peaceful course is to get the hell out of afghanistan get a stand has already pledged to back pakistan air for war erupts in the unlikely event that a war erupts with the us pakistan says it is running out of patience over these incidents where do you see this eventually heading. well i think that particular piece of news those rather underline the point i've just made if the if the puppet regime and it is a puppet regime in afghanistan is so horrified by the attack on pakistan that it is
9:07 am
saying that it will back pakistan against the countries that are occupying afghanistan i think you can see quite how far this is no this is now run now so i don't see it immediately emerging into look at the problem with these things is that once you begin down this path it's very difficult to back up so my very strong recommendation both for the pakistani people are the people in this country indeed the people globally is if you want to see a peaceful future all of us how to put the maximum pressure on the united states and our allies to cut out this kind of behavior or after leave it there john kerry's from the u.k. stop the war coalition thanks for your perspective. stay with us here on r t still to come what's in store for syria. this strategy knows that we can syria internally by using mercenary forces as the arab league considers more sanctions against the assad regime we ask what further motives we should expect from western powers plus
9:08 am
. i think that in america went to see by may we have the money and in the wake of black friday in the u.s. we have people in new york as the financial crisis has put a black mark on their shopping plans. but first cairo's tahrir square remains a sea of protesters this weekend with tens of thousands having rallied overnight against egypt's military rulers more than forty people have been killed since clashes broke out a week ago artie's palace leader has the latest from cairo. the crowds here are growing there are horrible people that have rising over the situations as were maintains now we've just had an announcement find some sixteen each just finishing quits he said if they have to carry time to spread what they are calling a civil salvation the government they've named mohamed el baradei is a presidential candidate who is also a name that was being bandied about earlier in the week as a possible person the army might approach to be the prime minister as the head of
9:09 am
this new government and they are high profile names that have been named as his deputies a leading physician and economist a meeting politician so you not have this is the most bizarre situation where you have a government that has been to cape fear itself here while there's another government that has been declared by the army and it is worthwhile noting that the muslim brotherhood does not support mohamed el baradei in any way all of this is painting the scenario for growing internal why haven't we that can only lead to more and waste the one thing that is happening against the backdrop of this political posturing is that the violence continues to climb just this morning saturday feast one person was killed another four people were injured when protesters try to stop or come i'll go on a story who is the new prime minister that has been named by the army from entering a government building according to eyewitnesses the person who was killed was driven over by an on the local we're also hearing from eyewitnesses that there was a lot of tear gas fired by this acuity forces and indeed these kind of reports
9:10 am
until gas are coming to us from alexandria the protests continue outside the security building there it has caused leading civil rights activists to start pointing fingers and point to bring international attention to what they say is launching an illegal substance that the egyptian army and police have been using let's take a listen there was so much chaos and there was a different type of gas that was creating what they call the chemical pneumonia that was very very difficult to treat. and in fact people have died from it and the police are telling families of very poor families whose kids have been killed you can pick up the bodies but we're not going to give you a certificate of death to try to to hide what really is going on it's not only fair we need to play protesters feel that the revolution they started back in january has not achieved the goals that we're hoping for indeed we're witnessing this same kind of feeling of this importance and the people feeding them promises were not
9:11 am
kept across the region as my colleague investigated. almost a year after mubarak's fall sorry your swear is again stained with blood this is not you it's about the dignity of the egyptian people we don't want any more humiliation. here's another revolution seen libya the ousted leader moammar gadhafi was killed last month the people of libya are now left with a country in ruins and the government they didn't truths i think there is a reign of terror going on against those who disagree with the libyan government it's not presented that way in the western media but it is a reign of terror if you speak up right now against the the new authorities in libya you're likely to go to jail or be executed or disappear in the meantime intrinsic government brought to power by nato is strengthening its grip on the country nato and some arab states now openly call for regime change in syria the
9:12 am
louder the call the more violent the opposition becomes. unusable in the states western countries in the capitals of some countries in the region are openly recommending opposition to not hold talks with the assad regime and looks like political probation on an international scale civil war is brewing in syria the whole region seems to be plunging deeper into crisis. people suffered in the continuing wave of. violence in the middle east and north africa some analysts say certain powers might be interested in keeping the trouble boiling there are certain powerful interests outside of the middle east who wants to bring chaos is a rolling scenario discontent and chaos in order that it long term will be militarized directly by nato and that the oil resources of these oil rich countries by and large can be directly put under private hands it looks like this so-called transition to democracy in the wake of the arab spring is not going to while more
9:13 am
blood is being shed we're looking at an arab winter and maybe a new ware of spring around the corner as tensions wives and certain global powers are pushing for regime change in more countries of the region the wave of revolution is turning to a notion of chaos i'm going to check our reporting from washington our team. for more on the situation with speak with. political analyst editor at al akbar english newspaper joining us from beirut thanks for being with us so the muslim brotherhood was thought to be one of the driving forces behind this recent rally in egypt and now we're seeing that it turns out to have been a done deal with the military so where do they really stand in terms of their status in the country. well the muslim brotherhood has been historically a very traditionally conservative force of change they really believe one reforms as opposed to radical change from the outset of the egyptian revolution the leadership of the muslim brotherhood which is the older generation of muslim
9:14 am
brotherhood was very hesitant to join the protests in the square what they've done this time around is they actually did take part but they never do officially they actually the official position is we will not be taking part the reason for that i think is that the now believe the best way to get to power is through elections that's why i think there is some sort of a negotiated understanding between scarff which is the military council and the muslim brotherhood leadership to get it to try and get the elections going at any cost and that's what they've been trying to do they've extended polling for two days instead of one on monday and tuesday they're pretty concerned about the security situation but they think that the best way for them to get to power is actually through elections even though i think we should mention that a lot of the youth leadership in the muslim brotherhood are taking part in the revolution they're taking part in the square there's some tension between the two but generally speaking for them as far as they're concerned the revolution is relatively over and it's time to go to the country and that's what we're trying to
9:15 am
do and that's why i think it is not losing too much sleep of what's going on even though i think in the long run they might be the losers because a lot of people in egypt my find out that they're not asking cern about radical change and the more concerned about their political fortunes in the next parliament so how do you see this alliance between the muslim brotherhood and the military currently literary leadership playing out in the future and do you think that they both might lose out if people see them as kind of being in cahoots with each other they may go for something a third choice entirely. well it's important to note that you know it's not i mean it's not an alliance for say it's more of a mutual benefit kind of understanding in the long run if the condiment that is elected and the next month is not granted enough power to rule if they don't have enough say in choosing prime ministers and the military continues to manipulate
9:16 am
them then i think they're going to lose out on the street in terms of the military i think its fortunes are also on the decline among the people they are trying to they're going to try hard to put somebody as a one face for the rule they have a lot of economic interest across egypt of this situation doesn't come down in the next week i think it's going to show also that they're not able to control the country the united states is very interested in providing some sort of a liberal face of democracy in egypt so that they can probably control it from the shadows so i think they're both going to lose out if the elections doesn't go smoothly i think given what happened last week and the result of these elections are going to be tainted but it remains to be seen whether they can kind of recoup it in the long run by perhaps improving the conditions of egyptians in the long run and finally we hear that from a president at one time egyptian presidential candidate mohamed el baradei is forming his own government right out there in tahrir square how interesting how do
9:17 am
you assess the step do you think it's an interesting development do you think it could lead to more confusion what's your take. they've won from something called the transitional council it's a broad day it's another nationalist called the hunting sabbahi and the minimal foot to hoe is actually a former muslim brotherhood leader and very interesting leah now of all three people are actually presidential hopefuls so our reporter in cairo was telling me that on one hand people are happy that finally somebody is willing to provide an alternative to scarf and not simply protest on the other hand some of the young people are also saying that they still don't have enough legitimacy on the on the street that they still are working for their own political gain so depending on how . how morny is this transitional council is depending on whether they come out with an extensive program of how to transfer power from the military to them they may start gaining some tracks on the street but i think there's still a very long way bribe they and the liberals with him to becoming

a veritable social force and in the country we have to leave it there has translated in political analyst editor of our english newspaper thanks for respect . well armed rebels and syrian government troops are clashing in the east of the country with casualties being reported on both sides as follows the arab league's ultimatum demanding damascus let in foreign observers or face sanctions expired with that result on friday the lead we're now look at new measures including suspending flights to syria and crippling restrictions on its central bank this on the back of increasingly harsh rhetoric from western countries towards the syrian leadership political analyst patrick headings and says pressure from outside of the country may only make matters worse. the arab league called an emergency meeting call row to discuss syria meanwhile real reformers genuine egypt and citizens are getting their heads cracked open by the military police in egypt which is u.s. backed so the arab spring is
9:19 am
a joke for the people of egypt and if you want any indication as to what syria might look like after the west is done with their proxy wars using their proxy rebels and maybe a bombing campaign look at libya they're flying the al qaeda flag over the government buildings in benghazi so if the if if the western powers think that they're going to get away with a no fly zone in syria this is a very different prospect than libya the strategy now is to weaken syria internally by using mercenary forces al qaeda forces which were used in libya and also in afghanistan to bring them into base in turkey come over the border for incursions these humanitarian zones that the french are talking about are not humanitarian corridors these are paramilitary corduroys they will be used to move on much like the egyptian military government facilitated the movement of arms over the egyptian border into libya which was a direct contravention of the u.n.
