nato admits it might be behind the airstrike that killed pakistani soldiers an incident that's already led to pakistan blocking a vital military supply route to afghanistan. cairo chaos with fresh clashes flaring up in tahrir square as protesters give the new prime minister the cold shoulder and work on forming their own government. and how being blinded by love left one once aspiring u.s. politician homeless and hopeless on the streets of ukraine.
10:01 am
seven pm in moscow i match reza good to have you with us here on r t our top story nato admits it's probably to blame for a deadly helicopter raid along the pakistan afghanistan border that killed up to twenty eight pakistani soldiers and injured more than a dozen others islamabad responded by cutting off the flow of vital nato supplies to afghanistan the incident may deal a serious blow to the already strained relations over lethal incursions in pakistani territory our correspondent priya srijit has more. according to the pakistani military nail helicopters actually attacked a military checkpoint on the pakistan afghan border that checkpoints called salo in response to this incident actually ask elated pretty quickly and the papas that the military actually shut down that checkpoint which is the shortest checkpoint between pakistan and afghanistan so now all this supplies that were meant for nato forces in afghanistan are not able to get over the border in the pockets money
10:02 am
military also called this a tap quote unquote unprovoked and indiscriminate now nato helicopters are often in this region performing missions against militants and the taliban in this region pakistan is a very strategic ally to the united states in the quote unquote war on terror and tensions between the two countries have always existed they came to an all time high back in may when the united states performed a unilateral attack that actually alternately killed osama bin ladin just last year the united states accidentally killed two pakistani soldiers on the border and in that incident as well the caucus that afghanistan border was also shut down there have also been a lot of talk about these unmanned drone strikes that have been going on across the border by the united states in pockets of the obviously the purpose of these
10:03 am
missions these unmanned drone strikes is to attack militants across the border but many times they've killed several civilians and after that there were several protests across the country in pakistan many pockets dani's want to cut ties with the united states everyone sort of watching what the repercussions of this incident today will be for the region. but a powerful reaction from the pakistani people to the latest nato would cruise keeping us up to date through archy's twitter stream where she says some pakistanis are calling for revenge and retaliation for the deaths you. also reports that there are others who are seeing the dead as martyrs. of pakistan is calling the nato raid quote an attack on its territorial sovereignty saying that it will not tolerate these incidents john reese a political analyst from the british based stop the war coalition tells r t that the u.s. and its allies may be creating an explosive situation in the volatile region. whether or not it's a precondition for washington it should be a big issue for the rest of us after all pakistanis are after all
10:04 am
a nuclear state the region is unstable the border with afghanistan is usually a constant pretext for drone attacks within five pakistani territory we know that the us with a few weeks regard and refer to the whole area. as if it's one single plate if the puppet regime and it is a puppet regime he'd afghanistan he's so horrified by the attack on pakistan that he is saying that it will back pakistan against the countries with their occupying afghanistan i think you can see quite how far this is now this is no run so i think this is a very very dangerous moment i think what the united states and its allies nato allies have done he's an extremely dangerous incursion i'm not surprised at the anger of the pakistani of the pakistani people and i think the message should go very very clearly the united states and its allies you are playing with fire you
10:05 am
are risking instability greater instability in an already unstable region and this kind of behavior simply has to stop with gangsterism. return to central asia later in the program are to use military many will take a look at how the u.s. uses its influence in the region plus. i think that you know like a way to see by maybe we have the money you know in the wake of the traditional black friday in the u.s. we asked people on the streets of new york if the financial crisis has put a black mark on their shopping plans. but before we get to that cairo's tahrir square remains a sea of protesters this weekend with tens of thousands having rallied overnight against egypt's military leaders more than forty people were killed since clashes broke out a week ago archy's powerless leader has the latest from cairo. the crowds here are growing there are older people who have rising over the situations as well maintained now we just had an announcement find some sixteen each political police
10:06 am
who say that they have a very tough history of what they are calling a civil salvation government those names mohamed el baradei is a presidential candidate who is also a name that was being bandied about earlier in the week as a possible first in the army might approach to be the prime minister as the head of this new government and there are high profile names that have been named as his deputies a leading physician economist and even politician so you not have this is the most bizarre situation where you have a government that has been to cape fear itself here while there is another government that has been declared by the army and it is worthwhile noting that the muslim brotherhood does not support the middle the other day in any way all of this is painting the scenario for growing internal why haven't we that can only lead to more and waste the one thing that is happening against the facts of this political posturing is that the violence continues to climb just this morning saturday he said one person was killed another school people were injured when protesters try
10:07 am
to stop the canal guns or me who is the new prime minister that has been named by the army from entering a government building according to eyewitnesses the person he was killed was proven over by him on the vehicle we're also hearing from eyewitnesses that there was a lot of tear gas fired by the security forces and in these kind of of course and tear gas are coming to us from alexandria with protests continue outside the security building there it has pools leading civil rights activists to start pointing fingers and point to bring international attention to what they say is largely and in legal substance that the egyptian army and police have been using let's take a listen there was so much chaos and there was there a different type of gas that was creating what they call the chemical the monia that was very very difficult to treat. in the back people have died from it and the police are telling the families are very poor families whose kids have been killed you can pick up the bodies but we're not going to give you
10:08 am
a certificate of gas to try to to hide what really is going on it's not only fair we need to play ok says hill but the revolution they started back in january has not achieved the goals they were hoping for indeed we witnessing this same kind of feeling of this important and people feeling that promises were not kept across the region as my colleague in this case said. almost a year after mubarak's fall hurry your square is again stained with blood this is not you it's about the dignity of egyptian people we don't want any more humiliation. here is another revolution seen libya the ousted leader warmer khadafi was killed last month the people of libya are now left with the country and rulings and the government they didn't choose i think there is a reign of terror going on against those who disagree with the libyan government it's not presented that way in the western media but it is
10:09 am
a reign of terror if you speak up right now against the the new authorities in libya you're likely to go to jail or be executed or disappear in the meantime interim government brought to power by nato is strengthening its grip on the country nato and some arab states now openly call for regime change in syria the louder they call the more violent the opposition becomes. unusable in the western countries in the capitals of some countries in the region are openly recommending opposition to not hold talks with the assad regime it looks like political for the cation on an international scale civil war is brewing in syria the whole region seems to be plunging deeper into crisis. well people suffer in the continuing wave of. islands in the middle east and north africa some analysts say certain powers might be interested in keeping the trouble boiling there are certain powerful interests outside of the middle east who wants to bring chaos is
10:10 am
a ruling scenario discontent and chaos in order that it long term will be militarized directly by nato and that the oil resources of these oil rich countries by large can be directly put under private hands it looks like this so-called transition to democracy in the wake of the arab spring is not going to involve more blood is being shed we're looking at an arab winter and maybe a new air of spring around the corner as tensions rise and as certain global powers are pushing for regime change in more countries of the region the wave of revolutions could turn into a notion of chaos i'm going to check our reporting from washington our team more casualties being reported in syria as armed rebels and government troops continue to clash in the country's eastern region the arab league's ultimatum demanding damascus let foreign observers in or face sanctions came and went without a response on friday the league will now look at new measures including suspending
10:11 am
flights to syria as well as crippling restrictions on its central bank is on the back of increasingly harsh rhetoric from western countries or the syrian leadership for more on this i'm joined by robert naiman the policy director at just foreign policy dot org who joins us live from massachusetts thanks for being with us so foreign pressure is growing alongside the arab league getting ready with new sanctions how do you see this current situation playing out. well the situation is extremely dangerous should be dangerous for people in syria there is a. significant danger right now of a more generalized civil war inside iraq well that could mean for people there i think the idea of western particularly western military intervention isn't seen that should be kept off the t.v. . some of the things that the arab league is doing could be positive the idea of foreign observers in syria can be a positive step and pressing for that could be
10:12 am
a positive step i think the at the idea that sanctions are and i see it is. actually dangerous really should consider carefully what kinds of. sanctions he wants to close and look to all of those same is and i think the idea of the negotiations i'm going to negotiate a political resolution should be brought back to the center of even though you know obviously that's not going to be simple either simple or easy either but it's important to recognize there the regime in syria does have supporters and there are legitimate concerns of syrian syrian minorities about what may come up and that's a source of buttressed to the regime so dealing with those concern should be a top priority of the arab league and so far there really hasn't been at the center of the. main cause for the president assad to end the violence against the
10:13 am
opposition and the protesters but also we understand that the opposition is armed as well many army and military defectors among them so there are weapons on both sides here do you think it's helpful for everyone to just put down their weapons and walk to the table. i think there would be very helpful i think the a lot certainly understandable why some in the opposition would have turned to grounds i think that's a dangerous development which outside forces to do their best to scrooge i think the good men should be not just for the regime to steal its weapons but for all weapons to still and as you see a dialogue negotiation should be at the center of the of the internet. effort in order to try and bring about a peaceful transition rather than another so for. the nation in the arab region how do you think that fresh arab league sanctions could impact the dynamics the
10:14 am
regional dynamics well it depends what the sections are if it's clear that the arab league is not trying to try to push the confrontation or trying to gradually increase pressure on the regime not to collapse but to accept a path towards a political resolution then i think that there could be positive if the same sions are sort of sweeping i think the idea of crippling sanctions is a you know should be put to the side it best the goal of sanctions should be to push the regime towards accepting a political process for a result of the disputing trying to have a peaceful transition not but the point sanction should not be to try to make the regime collapse back into. and so i think in addition
10:15 am
the every effort should be me to look to leverage those that still have some channel to the regime russia china the iraqi government iran all these forces the extent possible should be used to try and bridge the regime to help pull syria back from the brink because you know we don't want to see another so war and in that region like we saw in iran the everything we've seen so far would just be. small compared to what could become so there are focused on trying to bring their regime and opposition regime into a political process that can bring up out of a mostly peaceful transition all right robert naiman policy director of john. foreign policy dot org thanks for your insight you. when archie online reports on how our fast food chains t.v. ad sees the fate of dictators in the middle east and africa this one to see to
