west whilst there is a very different approach when it comes to syria and libya for example first of all the mubarak is gone but the regime still the this explains why the demonstrations and. the. dissatisfaction continue the supreme council of the forces there are very wary of elections happening now because they see alliance that is taking shape between the muslim brotherhood some remnants of the old regime and the supreme council of the armed forces and they're very worried that if elections are held now the results of the election would be a victory for this coalition and for them that would mean that the revolution would be hijacked the west i believe understands the complexity of the situation is reactions are very sensitive about any intervention or interference in. from abroad

and i think the west especially the united states have learned the lesson of not intervening to prematurely taking one side against the other there is now a level playing field in egypt the supreme council of the armed forces they have the power of the state behind them the people in. the power of the people behind them it's a very complex situation because. neither the supreme council of the armed forces hold people. homogeny unified social forces the muslim brotherhood it is an islamist oriented organization. and we have cases now in morocco in tunisia or other islamist oriented organizations came to power what does this mean for the west and how we act if this tendency continues and spreads over into egypt also there is a trend of sunni islamic. revival

in the region what does this mean for the worst. of course. regardless of whether it will be an islamic government of not in these countries. the new leaders will not be as. close to the west as the old leaders. of the bin ali and because this is gone don't forget that for example if you speak about islamic terrorism one of the reasons that people cite for the rise of islamic terrorism is the suppression of islamist politicians in these countries so when these politicians get involved in politics when they start playing the political game they will be a match for the worst in the sense that there will be lots of challenges will

definitely take a firmer stand when it comes to something like the israeli palestinian conflict they would not accept. western interference in domestic affairs but other than that it can be. a friendly mutually beneficial relationship if the worst accepts the choices that the people will make in free and democratic elections which is the only thing that the west should do actually mubarak's regime is gone in egypt that i think has gone however president assad's regime is still there in syria and. spiting melting international pressure there is the arab league now which is imposed this set of sanctions how do you see the situation developing there in syria. syria is even more complex than the case of egypt or tunisia or even libya syria sits in

a very complex web of alliances in the region. its relationship with iran with hezbollah. with turkey with the rest of the arab countries with iraq this almost impossible to envisage in the continuation of the regime in syria as it used to i don't think that it can never be a return to the status quo ante in syria after the recent demonstrations. how will. change whether it will be a total collapse of the regime with a partial transformation of the regime it's still unclear what is clear to me is that the more the violence continues the more you reach a point of no order to fight as the regimes. if the situation in syria gets more and more violent and more and more bloodshed is built i don't

see how the regime could survive for much longer but at the same time i don't see exactly the way by which this regime will fall. it's still too early to say but it looks more and more likely that we are heading for a long. possibly violent struggle in syria how big are the chances of military intervention we're still so far away from such a scenario. libya and syria are two completely different stories when it comes to the feasibility of a military intervention as i said. gadhafi had no real friends. syria. we have usually been serious still has a lot of very powerful friends in the region. also the nature of the way in

syria libya are so different in libya talking about a very large country would be very. population density of the population in libya i think is three or four persons per square kilometer or syria it's probably a thousand person per square and the military intervention in the way happened in libya would be disastrous as for civilian casualties or so and it's also not clear whether the west is in a mood to include. in syria in the same way it intervened in libya. but then again. one wouldn't rule out completely such a scenario especially if the cost benefit analysis shows that without the military intervention more and more civilians will be killed by the regime or that the

country will slide into a violent and bloody civil war there have already been cases of sectarian violence in syria hell be the chances of the country sliding into a sectarian rift this is this is a major fear for the syrian people they look at iraq and they say we don't want to repeat in syria what we've seen happening in iraq before so it is of course a measure of risk that the whole country slide into a civil war that would have a sick to ask. let's just hope that this doesn't turn out to be the case it could possibly be the case. especially again as i said if the violence continues it gets to a point of no return there's so much anger violence could be six on dynamics let's hope that it doesn't get to the and somehow before things get to this point of

motive and something would happen to allow this regime to withdraw. saving its face somehow which i guess is is very is a very important point as far as the culture and the character of syrians and majority of arabs concerned saving face is very important there's no clear leader in the west approach on syria at the moment the united states is overstretched so i don't think that the united states would be ready to play that kind of role in syria if such were all. will ever be needed france the old imperial power may want to take the lead but probably that would be totally not more than that. turkey of course can play a major role but it is not possible to imagine the turkey would

have its own military intervention in syria without the support of the west and turkey has no interest in doing that so that's another complication facing the whole scenario of military intervention iran very powerful stable player it's now been slapped by other set of sanctions that are the target i don't think that iran is that strong as the west thinks it is the regime. the legitimacy of the b.g. . it is being told that. the sanctions it is not clear to me how effective the sanctions will be. probably targeting the top layers of the regime. intended to dissuade iran

from developing a nuclear weapon. but many voices which. maybe we need to. accepting the fact that iran will be a nuclear power at one point and we just have to live with it and of course fears coming from israel because of the rhetoric of. and of course this fear is justified but on the other hand iran. is a state with the. institutions it is not a country that is dominated by just one madman and this is just a. way of of looking at it but of course that article is not helping but at the end of the. complex. scenario and i think that the sanctions. will probably not be effective in terms of changing policy in case iran really has
