police used tear gas on people rubber bullets sound cannons pepper spray no this time they just performed arrest no injuries as far as we know but still almost three hundred peaceful protesters arrested were people who refused to leave the park surrounding the l.a. city hall which they've been occupying for the last eight weeks some demonstrators climbed into some trees to avoid eviction police are using cherry pickers to take them off those trees the occupiers in l.a. received an eviction order last week officials are citing sanitation problems and property damage as reasons behind eviction order we've seen this happening all across the u.s. under different pretenses authorities have been taking protesters out of their occupied locations in philadelphia police in riot gear confronted demonstrators arresting around fifty people about fifty people who refused to clear

a street over the last two months around five thousand occupy protesters have been arrested across the united states the movement has been generally very peaceful their message was all about nonviolence from the very beginning and to the credit of the occupiers in l.a. even as widespread arrests were taking place and there were lots of emotions involved of course and were brought down there dismantled any fear that the message of the movement would vanish together with the tents in those parts the message being against corporate greed against corruption in washington it can only get equality and excesses of the u.s. financial system that is going to ensure reporting right for what turned cities around the u.s. are clear protesters are being forced to find new ways of making a stand but the mixed a movement is seeking to find more specific goals and attract more supporters and as our correspondent marina portnoy has been finding out about recent converts or

even being recruited from the police ranks. occupy wall street has become an undeniable american household name. and police crackdowns against the democratic movement have become something of the norm not so normal is seeing one side indorse the other. retired philadelphia police captain gray lewis became the game changer on nov seventeenth arrested while demonstrating with occupy protesters on the streets of new york city a twenty four year veteran was held in police custody for eleven hours and received one comment from a new york cop nobody in this one individual said that i had the testicles of an elephant although all of america's police force is part of the ninety nine percent captain lewis says cops secretly supporting the us face dire consequences by going

public knowledge amanda's fear of losing their job and discipline being fired and then what do they do everybody in an ongoing project has that fear and police officers also they cannot risk they have children they have lives what would they do once are far there are no jobs available the nighttime raid on zuccotti park and subsequent arrest of dozens of journalists covering the story are among many reasons captain lewis says he temporarily transplanted to manhattan that's close to dictatorship when you actually the media. as with dictators around the world and that is very scary brutal scare tactics such as pepper spray the tongs and flash grenades pallisers have been used against occupy camps throughout the us oakland california resembles something of an urban war zone this fall leaving a war vet in critical condition and the eyes of an eighty four year old burning from tear gas oakland police officer fred chavez is the only active cop who's gone

on record with his support like i totally agree with occupy wall. even to illustrate what i can program i am a part of the ninety nine percent but most of our people are peaceful they want to see chased many believe the biggest change could calm when or if u.s. law enforcement officials stop suppressing the right to assemble and begin supporting it despite his arrest captain lewis is back at zuccotti park showing unwavering support for the occupy movement standing roughly ten or fifteen feet away from him a group of new york city police officers yes there we are securing the area but some are beginning to show little interest for the first time i had an officer break ranks yesterday at the barricade line a white officer named officer murray and introduced himself and he started asking if you question i said do you know the risk you're taking and he was so brave they said this is still america and until a supervisor order orders me back to the line i'm going to talk with you i hope to

petition their cause a plea for russian citizenship. we don't want to live in russia but belgrade is two weeks to protect us the minority here that's why we hope that russia will step in to help us saying as the americans and the europeans have supported the interests of the albanians in kosovo. postmen british of which ridge constant blackouts are low wages and ethnic violence are normal part of life here yet he says he will not leave and nor will his three children because this is where they spend their entire lives for him citizenship as a last resort. we live in constant fear every year we see greater and greater intentions from the albanians to drive us out even if a few areas where there are still serves their country has been recognized by the west but we are no part of it just like belgrade moscow has refused to recognize albanian control kosovo as an independent state following its conflict will serve
9:10 am
it in one thousand nine hundred nine and the declaration of independence three years ago and the petition has gained attention in moscow it is going to be this is an unprecedented outpouring of desire to become russian citizens so there is no past guidance on how to deal with this situation but we do think this is alarming and a direct result of how western forces have tried to deal with the problem by favoring one of the sides. meanwhile serbs in kosovo continue to build barricades around their pockets of population ready to stay off the only one trying to force them out whatever the rights and wrongs of the conflict that happened here in the one nine hundred ninety nine you can't help but feel for the serbian minority here in northern kosovo surrounded by hostility increasingly abandoned by belgrade ignored by the international community so they plead for russian citizenship or how it should be taken literally because the side of just how desperate the situation has become you can. see kosovo. now at ten minutes past the hour here in moscow we're

still coming your way in the program the high cost of living greece's new bail out and italy's military project mean more cuts for people who feel the money is being poured down the european drain. foreign ministers from europe have agreed to impose fresh sanctions against iran over its controversial nuclear program ahead of the talks in brussels foreign secretary william hague called for increased economic pressure and isolation on iran's financial sector and moves come just days after hundreds of protesters attacked the u.k. embassy occupying it for several hours unrest broke out after iran resolved to reduce diplomatic ties with the u.k. following its decision to impose further sanctions over its nuclear program the violence prompted britain to close the iranian embassy in london and to pull its own diplomats out of the islamic state political analyst and author adrian you think that these moves symbolize the start of a major conflict. this is

a war of bible west against most of the islamic countries now no doubt israel has been threatening unilateral military intervention into iran for many years now and the u.k. seems to be spearheading this whole process why are you now threatening military action so it's a very. complex war that's what they are waging great accomplishments in war means finding of a diplomatic on the financial state as they have with economic sanctions against iran and then for bank our own very much so we can see how we are now hearing the whole scene so western just by a day that includes sort of like pearl harbor bay took our embassy knowing there in the public eye or in the public mind this brings our memories of an eight hundred seventy nine taking of the u.s. embassy in tehran no embassies should never be taken no doubt about not the proper way to go but we don't really know what it is that is happening in iran would be

embassy where there are local advocates was we might have a much more generalized war in the region which could escalate the global proportions that we are seeing in the west playing with fire in about twelve minutes is the business news on r.t. but for now greece has a ground to a halt and public service employees walk out over new pay cuts jobs suspensions and in emergency property tax other protesters the first major test for the new technocrat leadership in athens which are secured the next to each new bailout tranche by pledging to go forward with austerity thousands of people went out on athens main square while the strike closed schools disrupted public transport and left hospitals relying on just emergency staff on wednesday the e.u. monetary affairs chief warned the eurozone has just ten days to stabilize the single currency and stem the crisis meanwhile the european central bank said it's ready to play a bigger role but nations should tie their budgetary policies closer together

financial analysts to your hand over to felt says tighter economic governance is needed a country's sovereignty could be sacrificed in the process. the sense of urgency certainly has not only to do with greece's it has to do with what is happening overall in the monetary union there are a lot of countries on the pressure don't forget for example the situation of portugal the spain problem is also very much on the table and then of course there is the italian problem it's very basic you can't have a functioning monetary union without a political union that's a choice you have to make and you can't have one without the other that has been very much proven now in the last two years of crisis what we do lack is political authority now of course that needs to be build up democratically but we have cornered ourselves so much in this euro crisis that we don't have the time left to build up the political union in
9:15 am
a normal democratic way so we will have to do it in another way that is through the representatives of the different countries being the heads of governments of the different countries it still leaves a lot of questions with respect to the democratic value of all this on the table but there is no more choice either you do that or you let the euro in the monetary union go down the drain. meantime italy's technocrats are set to unveil more cuts to stem its massive debt that our belts to some two trillion euros but at a time when italians want to cut costs and create jobs the government has another plan in the works which critics say is nothing more than quote economic suicide lighting etc for things like. this in the end they fly the plane if they can bind down by the legalities of the project still in the development stage then be lying it's a case to be paid in italy. everything's gamely cooling to plan

it's been revealed that barack obama told russia's president he had no intention of signing any legally binding contracts on the anti missile shield in europe despite moscow pushing hard for some kind of agreement to tell you not a copper explains obama's on willingness. well according to president's new video of during a bilateral meeting that was held behind closed doors between him and president barack obama the u.s. president has said that it would be no political gain for the u.s. in such a decision in providing russia with any legal agreements that nato is anti missile defense shield in europe will be posing any threat to russian security of course nato has been saying all this time that the main purpose of the shield is to protect nato countries from potential nuclear threats coming from iran and north korea but the shield will be covering a large part of airspace over russia so it could not be not russia's concern of course there was

a response to that earlier this week the russian president dmitry medvedev launched a radio location system not aimed against the west as he and for size himself but located at russia's western western most points in the region of killing in riots and russian president said that he's still willing to use that radio location system together with nato to targets common threats and goals however if nato is not willing to negotiate and cooperates it could be a first step for russia to building its own and me so defense shield adding a strike missiles to russia's borders right missiles that are cools down there nato has already labeled s s twenty two or stone once again the president did it says that he doesn't want this to be the case and the last thing russia would want to do to be forced to do rather is to pull out from the security arms reduction treaty the president with and president barack obama signed some two years ago the treaty

week i'm joined now by jacob now she is a columnist at morgan stanley russia thank you for coming to the program so industrial orders in europe are showing heavy falls but we see a company a different picture here in russia why well i think partly because russia is a big country and so it can make its own economic fortune to a certain extent so you had a deep crisis in russia in two thousand and nine really eight percent fall in g.d.p. and since then we've had a slow recovery so you got a lot of spare capacity out there and as unemployment's come down and consumers have got more confident they've been borrowing more they've been spending more and companies have started to invest more so you have these domestic processes that are starting to drive the economy forward and we think with that can continue unless something cuts across it like the all price fall in for instance which would which russia is dependent on that's right it's a very heavy level of the pendants but i think that's really why i'm forecasting for a half percent growth this year five percent next year whereas in europe we think
9:25 am
that it's going to enter recession this quarter and next quarter as well. basically all our supply looks like it'll continue to be strong and that's what russia really depends on all the counts for two thirds of exports half federal budget revenue as long as it remains high russia is relatively protected against the economic scale that is starting to blow in europe and what about. europe will most likely we know from what's happening in europe. europe will most likely start two thousand and twelve in recession do you expect growth here in russia and how much growth yes so i thought it would be and i think growth will be quite strong here because we see the spare capacity there's a couple of things which will drive growth up of its current rate like what the first is fiscal expansion the budget interestingly here to date the russian expenditures have not risen in real terms but we see a big cops here big cuts in social contributions in january increases in military
9:26 am
and police pay and we think that will support a further lead to growth and secondly once the new government is in place and has confidence around the policy direction of the country i think we can expect investment to pick up and capital flows to diminish and that will support growth in the second half of ok now turning to this week's major news and that is the invention of major european world banks in order to ease liquidity how significant do you think the movie is and how lasting well and being so packed i use it was great i think a great great step for two recently it's tell you first of all we have a shortage of dollars to put it in simple language external funding stress means basically shortage of dollars and providing dollars more cheaply to other central banks to provide to their banks will reduce some of the funding stress in the markets which is having an effect here in russia driving up rates in yields and secondly i think it shows that the monetary authorities the central banks of the
9:27 am
world are ready to take decisive action if it's needed so i think both both both reasons the reasons for some increase in confidence what about the european council do you think the european council will take a decisive step in tackling this new crisis so they think we correct yes that's right next friday the biggest series lender of last resort who's going to stand behind the banks and sovereign so we're having these tick problems at the moment. there's a debate going on between that the french who don't want the european commission to have a say over national projects. the germans don't want to see your of all this being issued and having common liability for other people's debts we hope that will be a political compromise and something could be announced next week but we are worried that the markets may have got a bit of head of themselves in seeing him thinking that we're at the end of the road ok well i don't think we have more more time that's my only last question was where the you think russia will increase public spending if the ruling party will
9:28 am
get a significantly less vote still when it's a good lesson but then that they predict yeah well i think i think probably north so there's already some increased spending programs in budget twenty twelve will get that increase in the military pay going up the social contribution can't but i think if you look at the tumor at the moment it's not just you know if you brush it off and votes for the government is also liberal democrats such as russia sometimes even the communists so probably the government will have a secure majority in the next to me even if you noted russia doesn't ok article now chief economist morgan stanley thanks very much for talking to the program and joining forty five minutes for more here society.
