we've seen republicans in state after state pass radical new voting rights laws. in quotes that according to the brennan center for justice could disenfranchise as many as five million eligible voters and it's minorities who will be hit the worst as new photo id requirements restrictions against early voting and disenfranchisement among convicted felons adversely affect minority communities across the country this is an old strategy going back to reconstruction revive during the one nine hundred eighty reagan campaign by paul weyrich worked on the reagan and both bush campaigns here he is seeking to a group republicans in a church back thirty years ago. now many of our christian have what i call vote goosen wrong good government they want everybody to vote i don't want everybody to vote elections are not won by a majority of people they never have been from the beginning of our country and

they are not now i don't matter of fact our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up only populist goes down so now of the end of c.p. is fighting back this week the organization is presenting evidence to the un high commissioner on human rights arguing that there is a concerted effort underway in america to deny minorities their right to vote in addition next year the n.w.c. people sent a delegation of legal experts to geneva to call on the un human rights council to take a stand against the right wing war and voting all across america for more on this effort hilary shelton joins me now he is the washington bureau director and senior vice president for advocacy at the end of the hillary welcome back thomas good to be with you great to have you. you know even the word disenfranchisement is you know it's a little. confusing to some people let's just call it what it is this blocking boat this is that the right and. the republicans have been up to this for

a long long time we just showed this clip of paul weyrich from one nine hundred eighty when they officially announce to themselves that this is what they were all and of course they'd been doing it for a long time then. but didn't the voting rights act make a lot of this illegal i mean hasn't the republican party been operating under a restraining order for decades i don't just blame on the republican policy that most politicians want to win period but some of them have the wherewithal to say that this important to the integrity of the role that i'm running for to make sure that as many americans as possible have the opportunity to participate. don't keer they just really want to make sure they win the election they want to get the seat they want to be in charge they want to be able to what they're doing the bottom line is that it and it because the very trust that the american people need in the system for the system to be effective what we've seen happen and you're right the voting rights act of one nine hundred sixty five was set in place to actually mechanized the right to vote and prevent discrimination against those who do go to the polls or vote you know the african-americans live everything from

gerrymandering double and exemptions to grandfather clauses and all that then all of. this is absolutely to prevent that from both it but we're saying now we used to call that by the way the old jim crow laws or look at what's happening now and this is gone through so many states throughout our country we call it james crow esquire . absolutely we've gone through this jim crow more outwardly discriminated in this people suppressing entire groups of people within our society and preventing them from being able to cast that vote and having to count it to a more sophisticated way of doing it without saying openly like you just heard in that clip that we want to stop folks from voting because it's not going to vote for us but moving do just the same thing and not having to speak about it in racial terms anymore but recognizing that because of our. demographics it across class times so we see here is the discrimination is happening when we talk about photo i.d.'s as an example most people say what does everybody have

a driver's license when the truth of the matter is everybody doesn't have a driver's license we did a study and what it showed is that if we every african-american in the country and applied the same law passed now in tennessee and south carolina and wisconsin and mississippi and so many other states across the country at this point twenty five percent of all african-americans would not be able to participate in the upcoming election but beyond that if we want to be really insidious about it i mean we've been paranoid if we took a look at for instance who actually delivered the last election for the victor but we found that the strongest increase in voters was african-americans young voters between eighteen and twenty four older american voters and women if you look at how these new laws are affecting americans and who in america is most affected guess what those are all the people least likely to have a driver's license actually right and those are the people who will be both

affected by these new laws that if we talk about the inside shortening early voting . florida just passed a provision short in two weeks early voting down to less than one and a limited in sunday voting well if we look at the law if we hit thank you so much so we tell our working class people talk about those kind of issues as well so we look at allone those who have been saying well maybe i'm a little paranoid but i may just be out to get me yeah yeah even paranoids are right sometimes and i think absolutely in this case that we all are the you're talking about taking this to the united nations that's right no i thought the all of our treaties with the u.n. that brought the u.s. into the u.n. had to do base that are weren't forcible had to do with war i didn't i didn't realize that you know i know the u.n. does a lot of great stuff human rights and civil rights is there actually a force of law that the u.n. can bring to it to the united states they try to do this with countries around the world with third world countries that is this is more moral authority than anything

else we're part of the u.n. to be this called upon by nations all of the country all the time to talk to them about democratization but if you look at the one thing the most consistent about the peace hunch into your history is our emphasis on our value in the democratic process of being available to everyone so we get people from african countries european countries that are dealing with new immigration status greater diversification throughout the country and wanted to make sure they treat everybody right and knowing that the in those fights and learned a lot through the process we're taking this report to the united nations to also make sure that the u.n. knows what's going on here but also as a preventative tool to make sure those fledgling young democracies across the country are even those old democracies to dealing with the new the the new diversity in their countries have the tools and also understand what the threats are so that democracy for the fact that we apparently don't have those tools here anymore we have a little hillary how do we how do we turn this thing back to their number of things

we need to know what we have to roll back those laws and recognize that even as innocuous as they are they really will. the american process of democracy the lock out americans and prevent that voice coming through we get the justice department shut some of these things to absolutely there are two cases now before the justice department were urging the justice department to not clear under section five of the voting rights act both south carolina and texas built those are two of the four states to cover the other states have moved to implement these laws as well and we are moving our members and friends across the country to actually push back on those governments and repeal those nasty laws as well great we got to get all eric holder on this and everybody else in sight thank you so much ily for the great what was it done it's great being with great having you having here with us. it's the good the bad and the very very in excess of boy. the good ruth

sure. this is going to be a really short. but fox business aka g.o.p. t.v. dedicated an entire segment to bashing the children's film for spewing eight about corporate america and promoting a communist ideology why because the villain in the movie is an oil baron out to destroy the muppets theatre and kerman and his friends are determined to save their beloved artistic home but even though the storyline of the muppets movie really has very little to do with the oil industry g.o.p. t.v. spun it as a liberal environmentalist propaganda piece. is liberal hollywood using class warfare two to kind of break brainwash our kids. yeah absolutely and they've been doing it for decades but teaching our kids class warfare where are we going is china a second yes that is our old friend dan gainor on fox business accusing the muppets of trying to brainwash our kids with an anti-capitalist anti oil industry message

he's a businessman and tom but as you know he would been doing that but if we can let's look at some of the core foundational values that america was founded on that we all hold dear fairness for example is it with fairness let's stick with fairness for a second and isn't isn't there something about you know the. fairness about saying you know this this is our this is our land and this guy is going to come in and drill on it i mean but he was i mean they actually had a contract in the movie and you know he was going to drill on land that he also but they had a buyout and that was the whole the whole concept of trying to trying to raise the money that he's the villain for wanting to drill oil because of course you know we haven't had any bad oil movies recently cars to which. again the boat the other kids where we were oil industries bad or there will be blood or syriana i mean we did a study a few years back i think i actually talked about on your show but it's been a while looking at how the oscar nominated movies covered business and we looked at

would you know the all the top oscar nominated films best picture best actor best actress all that kind of stuff and it being about sixteen seventeen films seventy different depictions of business men in all those films as villains and only one of them was positive that was ok as you mahdi's character would you know it from cinderella could that be because when you look at the value of walty what you find is that business men are not loyal to the united states of america in fact they'll take our jobs to some other country in a heartbeat they're loyal to making a buck and screw them up it's you know or anybody else that's entirely wrong though we've got we don't know if there aren't enough for a head of that he's not thousand factories close in the last eleven years and every single week is because some businessman decided there was more profitable to throw americans out of work and go to good american you know one hundred one playing the argument zero sum game to two these are businesses that are only nobody so they're all by people meeting scenes of loyalty has hired

a head value among business and it's not a dead value i mean i work for organization and i can tell you that's not but what about the sanctity of the middle class what you know sanctity is an important value in american life and one of the things that we've always held dear is that people if they work hard if they play by the rules if they make it through school they stay out of trouble they should have a job i mean there's something there's no fundamentally say a bit about god i mean i look at a look at so i feel bad is about our social contract i mean shouldn't there they're going to try to present what you're skilled at so it's a you've seen the tumbler page for occupy wall street and it's a list of the largest i have ok well i mean the list of you know this point by hundreds of people telling their stories about why they're the ninety nine percent many of them it's tales about you know lost my job some of the really. left or right you'd agree the bad many of them are people own one hundred twenty thousand dollars in debt from student loans for getting a fine arts degree and jobs and if you only pay twenty five thousand dollars well you know either you were not educated somewhere along the way that you're not going

to pay this with that kind of money or you just did something foolish and that's just that's also what you're going to have we're going to punish twenty year olds twenty one year olds twenty two year old you so made these decisions when they were seventeen sixteen that he signed contracting out on college i mean what at what point time do contracts not matter what is you know another value authority it seems to me like this is a massive misuse of authority you've got you've got giant corporations banking institutions that are decent and for profit colleges which is where the majority of these these alternately would end up as bankruptcies are as as failures as payments are happening. they're misusing the authority of the court system that you've got people who've been in business for years and years and years they're not a game the system not a fine print the contracts and then you've got kids coming in who've never in their lives you know bought it bought anything never bought i was there in their sign a major and there was a failure of the educational system i think i mean i mean i'm not really i'd argue we don't need more of the failure of our and i think it's a failure educational system you're afraid of this is

a moral failure to eighteen in our society if you look at it you know one of these conservative doings of military basically you know rob rape and pillage the country is not just a sort of those who who gave majority wall street given george's money to obama but not to the g.o.p. now wall street was this is not obama now it's going to six years it's our business is this is a moment to rebuild a growing students i mean what economically you know but it's also about students making what i thought about limiting what about liberty and other another important american values liberty how can you be free you know franklin roosevelt famously said one hundred thirty six in the sense of this man is not a free man how can you be free if you can't afford to pay for your own if you think if you don't have to be education how did how does education which is educational system which is run by the left or run by the. i mean almost come out of the college for profit colleges are universally run by businesses for state colleges i mean some of these are going to see colleges eighty thousand dollars and you look at the cost of college is skyrocketing i agree one hand it is

a horrible and immoral situation and it doesn't happen in any other country in the world but why isn't that but don't blame the don't blame the right on that we don't have anything to do with because no other country in the world has bought into this weird ideology that says let's turn everything into a business including education then here ideology in virtually all the countries if you graduate from high school with reasonable grades you can go to college for free because they're investing in their intellectual infrastructure we're saying hey let's turn it into an opportunity for a businessman well actually i mean even the state colleges you're still they still got the cost is still going up dramatically and we should be ancestral hometown eyes many people in this country came here you know our answer is you came here because they wanted freedom of religion freedom freedom of speech but many of them came here for freedom of opportunity and once they take that away and well i would say that that's been wiped out but anyway i think we're out of time dan thank you so always a push and we've always been good. some

people are getting away with murder or of the very least manslaughter today in america alpha natural resources the company that owns the massey mine in west virginia that exploded last year as agreed to pay out a two hundred nine million dollars settlement for the crimes that led to the death of twenty nine miners that's twenty nine people killed as a result of gross corporate negligence and no one is going to jail over it the company simply writing a check and sweeping it under the rug even though federal investigators found that massey executives kept two sets of books to hide all the safety violations at the mine and even though critical methane monitors were intentionally disabled before the explosion under the orders of management. no one's going to be held accountable for the deaths of james rooney or timmy davis or josh napper or rick lane or gary

quarrels why is that because massey mine executives are rich people who make money and we have a fundamental values crisis in america where we protected at all costs those who make lots of money we shill them from prison we give them all the benefits they want and we protect them from any threats they could harm their bottom line at the same time we seem not to give a damn about those who just earn wages those who worked in the mines and not in the corporate offices we saw this played out with the b.p. oil spill last year that killed eleven men now one rich guy in a corporate office of b.p. is going to jail for manslaughter and today we learned the dick cheney's halliburton deliberately destroyed evidence that implicated that corporation in that oil spill anyone going to jail for that one. the truth is america is two nations with two different criminal justice systems capitalists or business owners or people who make millions and millions of dollars frankly live in

a nation that's different from the nation the rest of us live in they live in a nation where they pay a lower tax rate just fifteen percent on capitalist gains income while the rest of us pay up to thirty five percent plus payroll taxes on paychecks we bust our butts for they live in a nation where they're allowed to spew all their trash we're talking billions of tons of pollution every year just here in the united states into the atmosphere with no penalty. all the rest of us could go to jail if we were to start throwing our trash on the road out in front of our house they live in a nation where their product be at oil or coal or natural gas is killing hundreds of thousands of people a year through cancers asthma and natural disasters as a result of global warming yet they don't have to pay one penny to compensate for increased medical costs or loss of productivity in the economy due to those sicknesses and disasters they live in a nation where they get billions of dollars in subsidies courtesy of taxpayers

while unemployed people have to beg their members of congress for just a little help to put enough food on the table they live in a nation where the full force of the u.s. military is dispatched all around the world to ensure that the oil spigot remains open and their business remains profitable and again they pay for none of the costs of this ongoing military effort on their behalf they live in a nation where they can commit fraud and suck seven point seven trillion bucks out of the economy and get a bailout from the government they live in a nation that despite overwhelming evidence of crime and despite tragic consequences of their behavior from the twenty nine men who were killed in the mass the mine to the eleven men who were killed in the gulf of mexico to the countless people who have contract of cancer or asthma to the millions who lost their jobs and health insurance to the thousands of soldiers who died in our oil wars despite all this horror and dead weight in our community the perpetrators of these crimes

don't have to worry about going to jail ever just because they're rich. you know in america we used to look at wealthy people with indifference or even a certain wariness they were praised or rewarded they were just part of the community the people who were praised and rewarded were those who contributed to the community the lawyers whose role model was the fictional defense attorney perry mason the doctors whose role models on t.v. live middle class lives who cared about their patients and the politicians whose role models were jefferson lincoln and even the fictional jefferson smith played in the movies by jimmy stewart kids wanted to be these people when they grew up not because the these people were rich but because they contributed to society and they cared about others but now these people are largely ignored and even disrespected now kids want to be millionaires and billionaires now the high priests of our society are the super rich and as

a result people are dying people like nick mccroskey pain and ricky workman and no one is being held accountable the massey mine disaster just like the b.p. oil spill or american tragedies on their own but they were also symptoms of a much bigger problem in america today the decline of our moral values we need to realize that these corrupt millionaires and billionaires didn't build america they don't deserve the perks and extra benefits they get simply because they have a lot of money just like us and if we don't change our value system and return to embracing the ninety nine percent who actually contribute to our communities and build our communities rather than that part of the one percent who leech off of our community and those leeches will destroy our society it's time to roll back reaganomics including rolling back the reagan tax cuts every turn of the values of teddy and franklin roosevelt. as the big picture for tonight for more information
