6:00 pm
what kind of a low nischelle we'll get the real headlines with none of the mercy or can you live in washington d.c. now tonight we're going to take a look at obama's speech from yesterday where he addressed the growing inequality in the country and called the actions on wall street that led to the financial collapse are all but if the president thinks that it's so wrong the why have we still not seen any criminal prosecutions and there's a new excuse out there today too that it's just too heart artie's for a listers going to help join us for that one then g.o.p. candidates made their case against obama's foreign policy and specifically his
6:01 pm
policies towards israel at the republican jewish coalition foreign so we go through some of the highlights which include rick santorum criticizing the president for publicizing osama bin laden's death and that representative peter king held his fourth hearing today on muslim muslim radicalization this time we focused on radicalization within the military and service members and their families being targeted but you wouldn't really know it from watching the news so what happened to all the hype we're going to have all of that and more few tonight couldn't be dose of happy hour but first let's take a look at the mainstream media has decided to miss. well if you're watching the mainstream media today then you probably heard a lot about what newt gingrich and mitt romney's campaigns were saying about each other yet again you probably heard a lot about sentencing but what you didn't see despite the fact that the mainstream media bubble that i constantly talk about is based right here in washington d.c. and in new york is that right here on the streets of washington today there was
6:02 pm
another demonstration of this time the occupy crowd and its supporters decided to take on k. street the center of the lobbying firms in the special interests that have our politicians in their grips and the demonstrators marched peacefully on k. street some of them lay down to block the street as the police later picked them up one by one arrested them and placed them into a paddy wagon. the . it's just another day of action for a movement that many people thought wouldn't last for a movement that is keeping its energy and its momentum up despite every obstacle
6:03 pm
that's been hurled at it from police brutality to vixens of their encampments ridicule and mockery by the media today once again they show the people will not be silenced and they're fed up of no longer having a say in their own political system and in their own democracy and we also saw a group of protesters the tide decided to take the battle right to some of the politicians themselves yesterday representative joe walsh ran away from those protesters down the steps inside the capitol today they headed to the offices of john boehner and mitch mcconnell but do you think that our politicians that actually give the protesters a minute of their time stand face to face with the people that they're supposed to be representing and whose interests they're supposed to be legislating yeah right and that's because they're scared they're scared of the people and what they actually think which is we know from recent polls is a whole lot in terms of congress congress is only has an approval right now of what eight percent that is an all time low and that is pretty pathetic and politicians might be afraid of talking to the protesters face to face at the end of the day and
6:04 pm
fortunately they're not scared what should affect the most which are the upcoming elections because the only opinion that matters to them there is that the big money donors the special interests exactly the powers of people marched against today right here in washington but where was the mainstream media for all this are they they're catching every mode of the arrests were they on capitol hill catching the scenes outside the congressional offices of course. not because they're just as that is the rest of that they're just as bad as the politicians as the wall street financier's as the lobbyists on k. street they work hand in hand with the establishment because they're a part of it they no longer question the government or the powers that be and i've said it before and i'll say it again they're no longer the government watchdog they've become the government laptop and in fact the way that they regurgitate until the official line is almost bordering on worship or obsession it honestly makes me sick and i know that makes these protesters who came out today in the rain feel the exact same way we're all tired of having the mainstream media completely miss.
6:05 pm
well yesterday the president gave a speech in kansas same place where teddy roosevelt gave his new nationalism speech in one nine hundred ten and yesterday obama finally decided to address what happened on wall street that helped lead us to the financial crash. and we all know the story by now mortgages sold to people who couldn't afford it. or even sometimes understand the banks and investors allowed to keep packaging the risk and selling it off. huge bets and huge bonuses made with other people's money on the line regulators who were supposed to warn us about the dangers of all this but look the other way or didn't have the authority to look at all it was wrong. it combined the breathtaking greed of
6:06 pm
a few with irresponsibility all across the system and a plunge our economy in the world into a crisis from which we're still fighting to recover it claimed the jobs and the homes and the basic security of millions of people innocent hardworking americans who had met their responsibilities. we're still left holding the bag. did you hear that he said it was wrong now i think about the least he could say but at least to see the president has an opinion on the corruption that led us here but if that's the case why are we still not seen a single successful prosecution of any wall street executives i will get into many reasons that are out there but first let's listen to a new excuse it's being given and interview with the wall street journal david cardona a former deputy assistant director of the f.b.i. basically said that it's too hard for the justice department concluded that they can't pursue criminal part prosecutions and is decided that it's better left to
6:07 pm
regulators to take civil enforcement actions so do we buy it we're here to discuss this with me is lauren lyster host of the capital account here on r.t. all right thanks so much for being with us tonight and so what do you think about this because like i said there are a lot of excuses that have been thrown out there but right now they're saying that they just can't find enough to put together a criminal prosecution because at the end of the day you have to convince that jury beyond reasonable doubt that they you know they deliberately did this if they knew that there was fraudulent activity going on and do you think that legitimate i mean i'm not a legal expert so i can't speak to the burden of proof or convincing a jury but what we can do is look back to history right because there have been financial crises before if you look at something like this savings and loan crisis ok huge crisis but paled in comparison to our financial crisis in two thousand and eight ok it was one seventieth of this size but however despite that they were able to make ten thousand criminal referrals during that time there were thousands of felony convictions bankers went to jail and these weren't just low level guys these
6:08 pm
were c.e.o.'s ok chairman charles keating of the lincoln savings and loan was in prison for five years for fraud for corruption so they worked back then and i don't know what is dramatically changed since then from a legal standpoint like i said i'm not a legal expert but when you look back at history there is a precedent for convictions in financial fraud stemming from financial crises but what do you know it's not completely unheard of first i want to to have. some consequences then if we talk about this idea because actually taking it to the regulators right the f.b.i. says that well we can't do enough to pursue criminal prosecution so let it just be a civil case do you think that enough people out there know that that doesn't actually mean that jail time is included that it's only a financial slap financial slap in the face is oftentimes small compared to the profits that wall street makes wall street is a huge industry we've seen the financial sector bloom in this country as a percentage of g.d.p. over the decades so these criminal fines even if they're hundreds of millions of dollars it's not going to put anybody out of business if you're a goldman sachs or
6:09 pm
a citibank or citigroup for that matter so you know there's the size of the civil penalties and there's also the issue of regulators ability to to do that and to prosecute not prosecute but to go after these cases because we've heard that as he say they were starved of resources we just heard it this week from the f.c.c. chairwoman who said it and a hearing about dodd frank in implementation saying if we don't have more resources we're not going to be able to enforce this as the effect of lee we've seen people say that it's not being funded because republicans don't really want dodd frank to be enforced so there's all sorts of issues and not even to mention the fact that many say that the f.c.c. doesn't force regulations evenly that it may have forced them if you're a small fry that doesn't matter politically a small firm but if you're goldman sachs are not going to go after you they're hugely politically powerful and that's you know exactly we saw with this recent case against citi group it was citigroup the f.c.c. we're coming to we're coming to an agreement here and the federal judge just threw it out because they didn't even have to admit or deny any wrongdoing they were
6:10 pm
getting away with that we've seen that also report on how the f.c.c. had a policy where unless a full blown investigation was launched they got to just throw away the paper trail so that there never was a trail created you could never connect all the dots i think that there's a lot of people that would see problems with that so if you had to in your personal opinion tell me one reason why you think we haven't seen these prosecutions of the executives of the highest levels what would it be. alone i like how you're cornered me to how to make an opinion here i don't let me tell you that i don't like loaded with i'll give you mine ok you think no political well i think it has a lot to do with the money wall street and has a lot of money and political contributions you know five billion dollars over a decade we see their influence we see the revolving door we see the guys at goldman they go on to run the treasury run central banks i mean all over is the footprint so i think there's a revolving door i think there's a boys' club i think there's the money in politics i don't think you can discount any of those in the power they have i think that you don't have a good point there too in terms of the money involved because david sirota had
6:11 pm
a good piece today where he mentioned that in fact the federal government is going after food stamp fraud you know food stamp fraud and every one issue all of a sudden but i guess those on food stamps don't give a lot of campaign donations to that i guess they don't and you see this too with all these kind of cockamamie regulatory things you see them going after gibson for wood that maybe violated an indian law you see them confiscating a huge fish that's caught that's caught you know the wrong way illegally against regulation which is you know obviously a bad thing but is that really more important than going after much bigger fish to fry are a spender and it is true so the point is that not much has changed and so let's really quickly talk about the speech the president obama gave yesterday where you did suddenly see him speaking with a different tone he was addressing the inequality in this country it sounds a lot like the ninety nine percent occupy wall street rhetoric if. we played that piece earlier where he was talking about why we're at this point and then he went on to say part of the reason why he thinks we haven't exactly moved on so let's
6:12 pm
take a listen. now in the midst of this debate there are some who seem to be suffering from a kind of collective amnesia after all the time after the worst economic crisis the worst financial crisis since the great depression they want to return to the same practices that got us into this mess. in fact they want to go back to the same policies that stacked the deck against middle class americans for way too many years and their philosophy is simple we are better off when everybody is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules. so i'm guessing the the there that you wouldn't exactly name are republican politicians but do you think the president ends up coming off as a bit of a as a bit of a hypocrite because he's saying that they just don't want to change anything but he's the one that's not really going after anybody aggressively absolutely he's also the one that he passed frank that was his administration and many people argue that wall street had way too big of a role and way watering down
6:13 pm
a lot of those regulations and that in fact it has not ended too big to fail it has not ended a lot of the practices and in fact banks are even bigger today and the derivatives exposure which is you know can be a big scary thing if it all goes sour has increased to seven hundred trillion dollars which is a number that is absolutely staggering ok global g.d.p. is sixty three trillion dollars so in many ways the situation has become worse and that's not to mention that he's out there blaming republicans saying that they're responsible for the regulations and the weak oversight that led to you know the situation we got into in the financial crisis which goes to your point that will he's not going after that either with the regulations but at the same time he's super connected with some of these guys on wall street come on john corazon who's kind of the number one example of bad practices and fraud i mean criminal fraud betting with clients money is you know what is this affected to be with one point two billion dollars possibly lost huge donor to obama obama was out at the podium you know stumping for come on obamacare and a bomb got all the wall street donations you know how it came to pass or just
6:14 pm
really quickly so we hear obama talk about what needs to be done here at home thank you and i are both agreeing that a lot of people that are protesting out on k. street today are agreeing that nothing is being done here meanwhile tim geithner is in europe reportedly working behind the scenes so that the european public doesn't get angry that he's telling the countries what to do anything like that i don't know what's behind the scenes about it every day he does a press conference next to a different european official and says it's really important that they solve this crisis and we have confidence that they will so i think he's on a little bit of a press tour to try and instill confidence he's certainly the current person u.s. official out there saying that the euro's. really need to fix this and please don't let us get taken down with you in the process i don't know how much power he's actually going to have that you know yours that officials have told him to kind of bugger off and get their own house in order speaking about the united states in the past so i think there is not an official there and fortunately that tim geithner isn't exactly the best public face to put out there do you ever seen him give a press conference i wouldn't call him an inspiring figure loren thanks for joining
6:15 pm
us tonight thank you. all right still ahead on tonight's show we've got an update on the case of me and with your mom and the g.o.p. presidential candidates met today in washington to express their support for israel and of course a lot of obama bashing going to the latest foreign policy statements i don't agree with. you to believe the rest. but what a protest nobody seems to know. but never a pepper sprayed the face of the argument that they're being overly dramatic.
6:16 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize that everything you. are welcome to the big picture.
6:17 pm
mr. well looks like the capital punishment case against him all is finally come to a net even i'll serve a life in prison term instead prosecutors have called off their attempts at sentencing him to death after a thirty year high profile battle surrounding this case a boojum all former journalist was convicted of fatally shooting twenty five year old police officer daniel faulkner during a traffic stop in philadelphia back in one thousand nine hundred one a year later he was found guilty by a jury of his peers and then sentenced to death and even though the now fifty eight
6:18 pm
year old was originally set to get the death penalty a federal appears appeals court ordered the new sentencing hearing just last year based on evidence of the instructions given to the primarily white jury or potentially misleading when the case reaches supreme court the justices declined to weigh in on it ultimately forcing prosecutors to decide if they wanted to pursue the death penalty again after discussion with the district attorney city police commissioner and fockers widow they decided to cease their efforts against a wall so they will no longer be facing the death penalty he will remain behind bars for the rest of his life and that's where he belongs now this move marks the end of a three decade long controversy surrounding the black panthers sentencing for years the accused and a supporters are trying to draw attention to the bias justice system and the racism that existed during his own case is something that i've discussed with georgetown university professor christopher chambers a little while ago. there is evidence that the judge was a racist who said that he was going to quote any word he said after the trial so
6:19 pm
i mean could he be guilty and be the victim of a racist system that happens all the time. now in light of the attention given to other death penalty cases like troy davis is a welcome development to see prosecutors reconsidering their approach when seeking capital punishment charges while the death penalty might be off the table from a media many groups such as amnesty international continue to call for a new trial as the only way to properly carry out justice. now one of the last standing occupy encampments finally met its demise this morning occupy san francisco's camp and justin herman plaza was raided by police around one thirty this morning after city officials allowed the protesters to stay for two months now according to the protesters more than one hundred cops donning riot gear accompanied by firefighters and cleanup crews came in and surrounded the plaza very early and then blocked the media from filming another city taking their cue from mayor michael bloomberg
6:20 pm
a late night surprise raid and no media i think but it's really disturbing now san francisco police spokesman alvey esparza said that the police gave one hundred fifty protesters five minutes to clear the camp which a lot of people argued was simply not enough time to vacate the area. it was five minutes from the second they walked around to gather our belongings. barely had time to leave my friend steve got arrested instead they ripped him out of. it went down really really. so in total seventy people were arrested on suspicion of illegal lodging and camping in a public park including thirty demonstrators who did not leave when told to and forty people who blocked market street to protest the raid and the raid shocked and outraged occupiers who said they were caught off guard mostly because they were in talks with the city council regarding how long they could stay in justin herman plaza and were discussing possibilities on where they could relocate to have. police tell a different story. yesterday emails were turned even though bunch of department
6:21 pm
heads went over and tried to. finalize the site we weren't getting any further negotiations they've broken off. a marriage lee agreed of the police arguing it communication deteriorated to a point where was clear no progress could be made in order to maintain public health public safety and return the plaza for everyone's use city agencies peacefully and orderly and that the encampment at justin herman plaza now as you can imagine the state of communication and the claim of the police peacefully an orderly end of the encampment is one that's being disputed but the occupiers have vowed not to let their raid not let the rates slow down their efforts and they planned another rally this afternoon at the plaza as well as several organizing the balls organizing several mobile occupations throughout the city. well today the republican jewish coalition held a form for the g.o.p. candidates but the exclusion of ron paul who was not invited due to what the group called his extreme and misguided views as a place where we saw a lot of obama bashing mostly based on foreign policy but of course things like
6:22 pm
obamacare happen to make it in and we heard critique on everything miss policies towards iran to his public announcement of killing osama bin laden yes that actually happened the first and foremost what republicans see as his negative relationship with israel and if anything we saw the candidates trying to outdo each other on just how much they love the u.s. ally let's go through some of what was said and particularly stood out and let's ask once again if even this forum is going to help republicans secure the jewish vote which obama won hands down in two thousand and eight her disgust with me heather ceremony republican strategist and managing owner of four forty group public relations thanks so much for being here tonight thank you for having ok let's start with that last point that i just made right if you think about it the jewish vote makes up about two percent of the population obama overwhelmingly got it they normally vote democratic so what is this about do you think the candidates can actually sway that or is it really just about the big donations that happen to come in with was saying israel is the closest ally we have well i think that you're also securing the conservative christian vote and historically they support israel
6:23 pm
not only for political reasons but also because they believe that israel is a very protected country it's been ordained by god to be protected so no one really wants to touch that and you know if we get some jewish votes in the long run that's great too but i don't think that that's our focus our focus is we want to make sure that this is the conservative position it is what we're supposed to be holding and israel's a valuable ally and make sure that we are very clear about our support for. it because obviously this is i guess you could say iran is always an area where the side hit president obama and israel especially number one has been one of the favorite punching bags for the. but what is it exactly about obama's foreign policy towards israel i mean he's. the amount of aid that we give to israel when it came to the u.n. vote there is the threat to veto i don't understand what else he needs to do exactly what i think is because he's been really trying to keep both sides happy
6:24 pm
and you really can't do that i mean israel and palestine i mean it's a very touchy place and we we really wanted to see if we really want to see obama be more pro israel in that he wasn't so unclear about whether he supported them wholeheartedly or if it was more just to show that he is you know supportive of both places you can't be you really can't you know you so have to be for peace of course but the republicans would argue that he just made too many concessions to you have to be part you have to be another president and long live out of water to solve or you know what i mean bring peace to the middle east but you have to very clearly take a position here and i mean as i said. the reality is they are diametrically opposed so there's only so much you can do and israel is our friend israel is our friend they are they have never been. you know a bad friend to us they've never been an enemy to us so you know we want to reciprocate and you know i'm not an enemy but i think that some people would say
6:25 pm
that you know who hasn't exactly been the most respectful person when it came to president obama in the relationship of the two had there either i would you know but that once again goes back to obama you know and not know america you know america as a whole supports israel and that's why obama's been at fault because he hasn't been leading us down that road that has been carved out for a long time so he's been leading them down that road like you said it is never ever going to. get i do think that i want to get we're opinion on this fact that ron paul wasn't invited because he's just not mainstream it up with what the g.o.p. thinks he's a little too extreme for them i mean let's face it what would ron paul this is so bad to have another opinion out there is it so bad to have somebody thought of going something. no i don't think ron paul is really upset he didn't get to come because he would have said we shouldn't really be doing anything with israel or anybody else for that matter i mean he's very protectionist he's very isolationist and so there really wouldn't be much for him to say you know sorry he's upset i
6:26 pm
want to get into some of the candidates that did actually get invited weights and who if you ask me say some absolutely crazy extreme things and i want to start with break santorum this is kind of a double whammy all of these guys are things that are we need to say very clearly that we will be conducting covert activity to do everything we can to stop their nuclear program and that means using covert activity may have occurred at the missile site just recently in iraq right i i would like to think the united states was involved in that i would like to think that we had something to do with that missile site but given the president's record on with osama bin laden and not being able to keep a secret of anything good that he did for me even more than twenty four hours i suspect we'd already know if we had something to do with that with that explosion i . i mean i just find that to be so ridiculous on so many levels that i'm wondering if or when we first heard critiquing the president for for admitting that he got
6:27 pm
a salad a lot of which i can't imagine any american leader that wouldn't do that and then he's saying that these covert actions that were. obviously are going on in iran should be covert we should clearly state them yeah that does seem to be pretty consistent and i think that's the challenge right now for all the presidential candidates in the republican field is to be consistent and with so many parents that don't like it ok yes i'm making a broader conclusion here but i think that you know you need to be consistent and with our two front runners right now gingrich and romney they're both flip floppers you know and ideally you would have a candidate who. says one thing today and also the same thing tomorrow and said the same thing five years ago we don't really have that candidate right now and you know with twenty four hour news and also with all these debates going on it's easy to make mistakes but it's time to end this is you going to really grasping at straws too because you know if anything obama's foreign policy is one area where i've been incredibly critical of the president i feel like he's been really hot many areas and so many areas and so that's where i feel like he if anything
6:28 pm
should be right in line with the g.o.p. candidates and now they're trying to find a way to criticize him there which is that he publicized osama bin laden's killing let's also listen to something that you gingrich said if elected this is who he would want to be his secretary of state. if you will accept john bolton to be secretary of state. only appoint him if you will agree that his first job is the complete and thorough transformation of the state department and the replacement of the current foreign service culture with a new entrepreneurial and aggressive kalter dedicated to the proposition the defending freedom and defending america is the first business of the state department not appeasing your opponents. are it's a two quick questions for you are you a scared as i am about a world where john bolton is the secretary of state this is the guy says we have eight days to bomb iran every he's the biggest warmonger out there and have you
6:29 pm
seen hillary clinton playing in appeasing role as the secretary of state thus far i think secretary of state clinton has done a pretty good job of actually surprised by how she's done i was not going to i didn't think she was going to a very good job but i don't think that bolton is scary choice you know he wasn't bastard un he wasn't scary isn't vassar to you and i think that you know he has some great ideas for reforming and that's what we need we need to work we need a republican candidate and republican people surrounding him who make wise decisions and want to have ideas we don't want the status quo you know you want the status quo but it's basically ideas are to dissolve run away that i don't i mean no no you are saying that no that is a lot of words that have come out of his mouth many times when he said we have eight days to bother our israel has eight days to bomb iran i mean it's this constant stress i have to wrap it up of course it's got to her break but heather thanks so much for joining us and i think you. are coming off the responses of like here is with you said i read it and then representative peter king.
