mr. hi guys it's time for show and tell on tonight's program last time we spoke about the libertarian discontent with who are considered to be the g.o.p. front runners romney and gingrich so if either romney or gingrich get the g.o.p. nomination should it wrong all the third party ticket but a piece of the truth and send you to find out what you had to say. according to the latest a.b.c. news washington post poll as well as polls by n.b.c. c.b.s. and the des moines register ron paul's newest numbers placed him in the top three for both iowa and new hampshire caucus while the a.b.c. poll placed him in the top three choices it's still going to tout a big problem only eight percent of the likely calls his coworkers see fall is the

best choice to beat obama in the national election but we all know that polls change quickly and ron paul's consistent polling among the top three is nothing to scoff at eg specially when we have you'll be candidates dropping like flies but if the g.o.p. sticks with gingrich or romney as the nominee should paul consider running for a third party ticket for charles said ron paul should still run on a third party take it any attempt at real change is worth a shot to davis added ron paul should run republican or democrat or even third party we can't keep kicking the can down the road for more years hoping that one of the parties will finally get it and i get i'm going foreign policy alex said it definitely would be taking votes from the g.o.p. nominee and may even have a shot at winning but not everyone agrees jeffrey told us third party candidates are never successful and ron paul will not be any more successful regardless of his party has ever said i don't think ron paul can beat obama and he is still part of the same political machine as the others so we saw opinions in both directions from

our viewers and up until now ron paul has said he doesn't think a third party ticket is the way to go but we'll just have to wait to see what happens when the primaries get underway. now that ways we appreciate your responses and here's our next question for you on the show we just spoke with colonel lawrence wilkerson about the u.s. covert war with iran so how far do you think of as a play the tensions will go between the two countries let us know you think on facebook twitter and you tube and it was a response just might make it on air. now if you were wiki leaks released a quarter of a million confidential state department cables they were splashed across the internet published on the front pages of the new york times the guardian hillary clinton responded and the entire u.s. foreign policy world was in a tizzy. united states strongly condemns the illegal disclosure of classified information it puts people's lives in danger threatens our national

security and undermines our efforts to work with other countries to solve shared problems. well it's funny because the government seems to have forgotten about all that and prefers to live in a dream state pretending that those cables aren't public knowledge say back in april the a.c.l.u. filed a freedom of information act request seeking it twenty three state department cables that had been made public by wiki leaks but they still asked to test the state department and the state department seem to fall right into the trap and they really did themselves this time they just responded as if the content of the requested cables was still confidential they withheld twelve cables altogether which they seal used the dirty dozen of those cables dealt with everything from interrogations at guantanamo to conflicts with allies over rendition to pressuring the german government not to hold u.s. officials accountable for kidnapping detaining and torturing a german citizen and you can understand why the us want to keep these cables under wraps they don't make us look very good one problem with that of course is that anybody with an internet connection can find the entirety of these cables online

but that doesn't matter to the state department they still feel like they have secrecy to hold now the other eleven cables that they released were heavily redacted which also makes for some enlightening reading since the unreactive cables have already been published so now we know which bits and pieces the government really didn't want us to see now in this cable which comes from the us embassy in the hague the us leaves in the parts of the cable which praise the policies of the united states but they leave out the areas of disagreement with the dutch government including their disapproval of the treatment of guantanamo detainees all left out for national security reasons of course now this next cable here in the u.s. embassy in lisbon the government redacted a whole paragraph detailing the portuguese anger with allowing the u.s. to use their airspace to transport guantanamo detainees back to their country of origin now why they would react that i don't know it's kind of unclear are they trying to cover up the fact the outrage over past illegal actions of the u.s. are still an issue in the diplomatic relationship with portugal or are they just trying to cover up the fact that there is anger at all now of course we don't know

exactly why the government chose to react that portion but it sure does give us some intel insight into their. thinking something that we wouldn't have had if they simply chose to acknowledge reality but it is terrible attempts of preserving secrecy within the obama administration are really just par for the course at this point not only did they ban hundreds of thousands of federal employees from accessing the wiki leaks site on government computers the state department actually went so far as to ban federal employees from looking at the wiki leaks website period i guess they're also supposed to shield their eyes from the covers of the new york times so to shade the a.c.l.u. for showing just how far the u.s. government is willing to go to defy logic and just how truly absurd the government's archaic and overbearing secrecy regime really is. now speaking at the hague today at a conference on internet freedom co-hosted by google u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton called it an urgent task to preserve civil liberties on line drawing on examples from the arab spring revolutions in egypt and tunisia she expressed the important role that social media played and also the

dangers of censorship practiced by those governments but the critique didn't stop there she also worked in the role of private businesses play especially in selling surveillance technology to state actors putting the onus on businesses to think twice google's executive chairman eric schmidt also got a few words in expressing the company's goal of joining in a spirit to fight people who want to shut down for his speech nice to see the topic elevated to be one of global importance just how much of that involves actors people like clinton or like schmidt practice what they preach joining me from our studio in new york is eric schwartz executive director of demand progress and i want to thank you so much for joining us tonight and before we get into some of the nitty gritty of what clinton had to say i mean i guess this is a positive development that at least internet freedom is something that's being discussed on a global scale. oh yeah i mean you know props to clinton for going out speaking in favor of internet freedom and putting the onus on the private companies that have been exploiting this surveillance technology you know we can criticize it and i'm

sure we will but at the very least this is a really positive development and it's putting the pressure where belongs all right well let's take a listen to exactly what she said when it came to private companies selling that technology to certain actors. when companies sell surveillance equipment to the security agency of syria or iran or in past times qaddafi there can be no doubt it will be used to violate rights. now. i think about a good point right a lot of people out there brought up that surveillance technology we're selling it to needs to be looked at but if you're selling it to any government i mean they're selling to the u.s. government what's to say that any government won't use it in the same way you know that's exactly right i mean the interesting quote she said was you can be sure it will be used to abuse people's rights well that's true not just if you sell it to khadafi it's very clear that this technology has been developed not for small

countries overseas but right here for use in the united states by the u.s. government which we know through laws and interpretations of these laws that the government won't even make public has been used to trample civil liberties massive secret spying all sorts of things that would not be approved by courts or judges were they to be public and so instead are being done behind closed doors you know see anybody saying that this technology should not be sold to some of the people who abuse it most right here at home well actually i think that she ended up making a statement that was sounded pretty damning after that so let's listen to one more thing she said. governments have you know never met a voice or public sphere they didn't want to control more government control will further constrict what people in repressive environments can do on line. so basically as you just admitted that every government wants to control that's what governments do when it comes to their people but it's interesting to see her

you know talk about private businesses because that's not something that you really hear often or at least not something that a lot of people here in the u.s. don't like right you know they don't want the government telling private industry what to do so i do think that it's something that's becoming specific to the internet and to technology i mean we don't really hear a whole lot of government interference when it comes to oil companies or you know get it going for diamonds or you know companies that use sweat shops around the world but i think there's a crucial difference which is that people united states are exporting technology which is used by other countries to harm the populations of those countries and so we do have various export regimes around exporting missiles and weapons technology to other countries and so a lot of people have suggested we should at least have similar sorts of rules for exporting surveillance technology maybe it wouldn't be banned maybe you know there wouldn't be regulation about the surveillance technology but at the very least if you're knowingly exporting it to a government that you know is going to use it to crack down on their population maybe that should be prohibited are now speaking of that to you and this isn't

necessarily a kind of technology but so we've heard a lot about how and tunisia and egypt and other countries in the middle east we saw shutting down communications as the arab spring has been going on we've covered before on this show how the bar system in san francisco did the exact same thing they just approved new rules saying that they're going to have the ability to do that to shut off cell service and now the f.c.c. is even looking at making that a national rule what are your thoughts on that. you know it was you know it's very easy to go to other countries and criticize them it's a lot harder to look at your own country and point out what's wrong here but it's ironic that hillary clinton is giving this speech this week when just in a couple days the u.s. house of representatives is expected to vote on the infamous bill that i've been on the show talking about many times that would allow the government to shut off web sites here at home and censor them from american users so yeah you know not just the f.c.c. but actually the u.s. congress is planning to vote on this bill and despite

a million people around the world trying to get hillary clinton speak out against it she's remained silent and we're actually going to be mentioning a few more details than that. we've been talking all the time on the show and we have more about it coming up in our tool time too and i also just want to get your take on this week over secrecy kind of thing and we saw the exact same thing with the pentagon papers right they just got declassified about forty years after the pentagon papers are out there and the papers are writing about them so what do you think it is where does the thought process come from that even though papers are out there are documents are out there on the internet for everyone to see you still keep them classified technically i think your point is right it's really revealing to see what they withhold you know what the pentagon papers just this year they were finally released and even then they wanted to withhold twelve words which they thought were still too secret for the american public to know but i think a lot of it just comes down to the fact the people at the state department don't really seem to understand what the internet is i remember after the wiki leaks

documents came out they held this big press conference where the spokesperson for the state department got up there and said it would be leaks needs to return this classified material of the crime is ongoing until they do and all the journalists just laughter like how can they return the material it's up on the internet apparently people in the government don't seem to understand what that means which is i guess why we should be all more worried if they're legislating based on these things and i want to thank you so much for joining us tonight thanks so much for having me again. all right just ahead on tonight's show the n.c.a.a. is trying to push their anti-piracy agenda with lawmakers comedy to make their point. and that in happy hour with the show you great spoof on rick perry is the latest ad at michele bachmann devices her daughters. into it all their military mechanisms that do not work to bring justice or accountability. i have every right to know what my government should do if you want

to know why i pay taxes. but i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so silly you think you understand it and then you. hear or see some other part of it and realize everything is. hard welcome to the big picture.

i'm laurie mr. through there don't believe the repetition of. what is protesting nobody seems to know. that never a pepper sprayed the face but part of the argument that they're being overly dramatic.

hi guys it's time for tonight's tool time award and tonight we're giving it to the pro hollywood advocacy group the m.p. the motion picture association of america has been one of the organizations that's in favorable of the horrible piece of legislation known as the protect ip at as we've discussed several times before the anti-piracy bill would give the government a wide berth to blacklist websites who host any individual or group engaging in copyright infringement and it would encourage internet service providers to start policing their own pages and report anybody who tries to engage in the illegal activity now is where the spread about this bill and sister legislation sopa lot of companies and groups of expressed opposition and these aren't just random companies these are the big companies out there like google facebook linked in a.o.l. yahoo e-bay muzzle of the and the a.c.l.u. so needless to say as opposition grows groups like the n.p.a. have been finding ways to fight that and recently they've offered to try the humor

route do you ever what rick perry had the horrible gaffe try to remember which government departments he would cut well he attempted to save pace face by making a cameo on letterman. rick perry excuses number two. actually there were three reasons i messed up last night. was the nearness to the headache. and three. ah. yeah looks like the m.p.a. took a cue from rick perry because according to tech dirt and paydays been sending around its own top ten list of members of congress they give reasons for why the government should be in favor of the protect ip act and just wait until you hear some of the items on their list for starters they write the protect ip act will preserve american jobs and encourage economic growth and they argue that piracy an infringement would leave ten million american jobs at stake middle class american

jobs at that but are those jobs actually tied to copyright or they tied to the media industry itself and it's not like hollywood would stop producing content if there's no copyright protection in place and fact research from professors at harvard and the university of kansas shows of the more sharing of content in the media industry the more people actually buy that product and the next point internet piracy in counterfeiting is a danger to consumers and national security so that to do with selling counterfeit goods like medicine and machine parts hence the argument that it's damaging to national security so for some reason the m.p.a. has suddenly taken an interest in this or they're just looking for ways to actually make their draconian proposal appealed to the warhawks on capitol hill and something tells me it's the latter besides should the government can be conducting their own investigation into why people are going to the internet to buy parts for government equipment are also one of the next reason internet piracy and counterfeiting funds organized crime networks i mean really is the n.p.a. taking cues from newt gingrich just because somebody engages in piracy on the

internet doesn't mean that they're part of organized crime but way to gets even better therefore the reason copyright protection encourages innovation and free speech so the m.p.a. argues that copyright protection laws have helped create the internet as we know it today and the internet allows people to express themselves and encourage innovations they can share or sell online they even explain that floyd abrams thinks the pledge of would protect free speech now i greet the internet as a great medium for individuals to share and express their individual as an individual as an excuse me but wouldn't protect ip after sopa actually. hinder people of their expression oh by the way floyd abrams is paid by the m.p.a. so of course he's going to agree with this built meanwhile about one hundred scholars came together earlier this year to explain how it would in fact threaten free speech so it's one person in favor or against one hundred who oppose you do the math now the n.p.a. is latest reason to protect ip act provides needed tools to target criminals beyond the research of current laws and organization explains how foreign websites are

often the ones that are hosting copyrighted content and traffic counterfeit goods but this poses a problem because current laws only extend to websites in the us not foreign countries but i do have a question who says the us even has all forty over websites around the world we can't play hall monitor to every u.r.l. in the world and not to mention we kind of already do that despite the fact that protect ip and sopa aren't law so you're out of folks the list put forth by the n.p.a. defending their draconian bill and frankly their reasons are laughable and not the way they want it so we should note the n.p.a. is even moving their annual meeting from hollywood to washington just they can gain more attention from lawmakers so far only pushing their legislation to congress through exaggeration and flat out lies but also trying to be humorous about of the same time is tonight's time winner.

a whole privileges that's why they won't turn on you so they can get more of it he later tells them to like i've seen your poll numbers and basically rick perry you may believe in god but he doesn't believe in you which i thought was a good line what do you say andrew. to. come on i don't know no i don't i don't know i mean i didn't know that kids couldn't celebrate christmas in school so i'm just flabbergasted by the whole thing i mean i thought i thought that was still you know we still have that one goal and it's not christmas it's the holidays being all this time i don't know it's a good question. let's show one other thing that somebody having to notice which is that the jacket that rick perry was wearing happens to be or look very similar to the jack. or. do you have a good job at least you know you larry i cannot then take cowboy you know we're getting married trying to be like i just don't understand why when these

politicians do these ads or say something which we know is going to be so inflammatory it is going to be so scrutinized why don't they do enough due diligence to kind of make sure that the little things like the brokeback mountain jacket don't come on like i'm not going to make an anti-gay ad or the same jacket he ledger or the movie reviews for saying he gave them even one of perry's pollsters later came out and said like he had nothing to do with that so it was a bad idea but i don't know and reasons for coming out with that because he got siding from pro gay g.o.p. pro gay g.o.p. groups so i don't want to get washed out of their graves yeah ok. so it's a man is wrong the jacket also is you know funny too right. newt gingrich take a look at this little video which makes him like the grinch that stole christmas. one master jennifer and a lot of recruits. i

like newt gingrich is the grinch i'd like for it like other time you're. right i don't really like it but like i already love i love this joke so easy will i and i think that part distracts from the rest of it which i think is just such propaganda come on if there was a liberal that was out there saying you know a great solution to our youth unemployment problem is to find ways to get them more employed in schools because it's not like you know youth employment is just like five year olds i'm talking about working age high school kids so why aren't we going to look at it here because we talked about all the child labor laws and said that they're stupid and wants to fire the janitor and that's why they have the kids we're only we're passing out of money ok and if that's really his position that's a problem but the way that these sound bites make it sound it's like ok he could be

talking about high school students like it doesn't make me feel like oh he's going to have five year old sweeping the floors in poor communities because he's a one percent or doesn't have that's the reason you have child labor laws a so people don't become exploited and lately he's been on a rampage when that's not the only clip he said this many times before that he doesn't believe in child labor laws and thinks they should be relaxed and i think that it's very valid and i think to anyone can we're in a much better critique is how him saying he's opposed to child labor laws because that has a lot more punch than being like oh you know you and i should have i guess that i assume that everybody already knows that he's been like making the rounds saying that and so that's the part that you make fun of is the things that the kids should gender their own schools he is not going to win there he's not going to win actually i don't know if you win. a cake or make a cake that's not very convincing that andrew. believe in child labor law. make the probably healthy employment. really bring that to some jobs back in the workforce to have kids working to make those little kids are going to have good

kids enter the workforce. so don't question it just put in the work whatever i was just all right let's listen in a little here and you know you say andrew green just something crazy resolve bachmann had to say in this one is like one of my favorites. in my time girl denounce boy to prom yeah well let me tell you if you were i am what they are getting around you so i know those days have changed big time well and our girls are not allowed to do that nor how you have to wait for the boy to call. girls aren't allowed to ask the boys out in her house i'm happy to grow up in that house i agree with her in the shell i'm going to be allowed to it's one thing i say that you should do your job. around here yeah but it's when things are you say that better reshoot exists is another thing to say that you are allowed to your per him booted from asking boys out well i mean who knows if she was really sticking to her word verbatim there but i just think that said i would that she needn't go her girls are not allowed to call boys you know she was saying that they way the boys called them to ask them out and i think that's actually

a good rule of thumb sorry when i was in high school i wouldn't have agreed and i would have been like women's rights blah blah blah which i agree with and i'm a feminist i was a gender studies where you say and i'm very nice a lot of the reality is works better if i work for the boys to call if there's a better success or a little different conversation about whether you should wait for the boys to call versus whether you should teach women that they also have the ability to go out and asked men out themselves. yeah i think she's preparing her daughters for more success in dating and i think she's preparing her daughters to submit to men like she does to her husband i think she i don't admitting she does her husband i think she should give their phone numbers i mean like you as a fifty something that i think like the biological ones some of them are actually of age and because maybe there are so many she doesn't want them making phone calls because that would be a big phone bill but you know if you have any kids or she have. to give all these people going to get what they're going to london phone calls you know it's going to do for the h.p.v. epidemic in america it's going to skyrocket those. guys are. in.
