in the headlines here. live pictures for you right here as tens of thousands are expected a rally in central moscow to protest the results of sunday's parliamentary poll. the rally has attracted people on the different political positions and it is expected to be ross's strongest for years joining me and he's now a live from central moscow. and europe is. britain becomes the odd one out rejecting e.u. treaty changes and forcing all the other twenty six members to come up with
5:01 am
a debt crisis pact. and a last resort israeli airstrikes on gaza increasing tensions in the region and drive palestinians to. this time though in a war torn libya. it is good to have you with us so this is artsy live from moscow with me. but up to thirty thousand people are expected in central moscow later in protest at sunday's parliamentary vote by russia's far east has already seen people demonstrating with hundreds turning out to express their anger at the opposition claims the results of the election were fraudulent and i was crushed live to our correspondent here in central moscow. to find out more and he said hello to you you. know where the biggest demonstration is is planned to take place we understand that as i was
5:02 am
saying earlier we have seen protests in russia specific port city. people saying protesters saying that they're angry of what they called a fraudulent report the parliamentary elections there where you are now i understand the weather is not terribly inviting here in central moscow. anyone or anyone showing up at this point. indeed tens of thousands of people are expected so far i just want to give you a view of the crowd that we have as the rally has officially just started you can see it looks like a couple of thousand people gathered at this square which was saying cianfrance for thirty thousand people you can see orange flags that's the group sala solidarity which is sort of an anti-corruption group by you can see ya book a flag which is a party that actually didn't make it into the duma didn't get any seats in the do my like you said these people gathering calling for free and fair elections they have a four hour permit you can see the amount of people a lot of people here with children a very peaceful atmosphere so far i just saw
5:03 am
a bride actually cross the bridge in her wedding dress folau so it is kind of an upbeat mood here we are hearing that people are also beginning to gather at revolution square which is the place where there is no permit to protest people are gathering there we are hearing though that officials and police are peacefully directing them towards this sanctioned rally and we're here throughout the day monitoring the situation we'll see how it all works out i mean so indeed indeed we understand that any want to go into revolution square that is an unsanctioned protest but as far as we understand they can be bussed to to the region where you are a square of any sort of protest leaders are predicting that somebody will bring the largest a show of public anger in the country since the collapse of the soviet union some twenty years ago as you were saying earlier demonstrators of protesting what they call fraudulent parliamentary elections they're making their demands known but how has the kremlin reacted to that in months so far. protests began on monday to
5:04 am
directly after parliamentary results for the duma elections became very clear and there were arrests there are several opposition leaders also detained some of them released but in general president medvedev and prime minister putin have said that it's perfectly fair for people to go. and voice their opinions it's part of the system here and then a sense are encouraging it really by giving this permits but also pointing out that a lot of the statements about the free and fairness of these elections coming from anywhere outside of russia is not appropriate of course i'm speaking about blatant statements by secretary of state hillary clinton that the elections in russia were neither free or fair play which i'm very strongly saying that that crossed the line and if so you make a mention about how the u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton in some way or another getting involved here but let's let's talk about of some of those there has been proof of the west directly meddling in these internal russian political affairs when for example we thought of
5:05 am
a secret e-mails up between election observers and the members on capitol hill what can you tell us about that. right it's directly connected in fact to the state department so it's a little strange to have this evidence coming out and then have these comments from secretary of state hillary clinton what this is e-mails that were are were obtained to be very illegally by life news but they specifically point out and you can read these e-mails in english anyone can go into the site and read them where you see observers of goalless which is a funded by the state department's very clear asking questions such as how much will be paid exactly for each violation that we find a lot of western media not even reacting to these revelations kind of just brushing it off but anyone who wants to go online and read these e-mails can to be fair the goal is has made an announcement they have a pact we'll be bringing legal action against my views because they were obtained illegally but no denial that those emails were actually really e-mails as you say
5:06 am
the e-mails legibly folse aside some might say not but the e-mails as we can see between go and also election observers and the u.s. state department so the u.s. state department externally getting involved with the with the feathers being ruffled here. on the ground as we see with the demonstrations against what some are saying were fraudulent parliamentary elections are the western media ignoring these emails but all the while we have startling evidence all the western media outlets airing folse footage of so-called protests all the while claiming they're from central moscow what can you tell us about that. right and you have prime minister putin also pointing out that the statements by clinton and the media coverage that we're seeing from the west very much in a sense encourages. instability in russia and really a lot of experts have pointed out is that is what that that kind of does instability i should say would benefit only the west the media coverage that
5:07 am
highlights that very clearly we saw it was basically networks like fox and socks news choosing to show more interesting yes pictures of athens and not moscow to underline the chaos so-called chaos that was happening on the streets here you had c.n.n. showing footage of a nationalist very ethnic rally that took place a year ago making it seem like that was the situation in moscow to be fair they did did then file a correction but you have this this picture being painted of tens of thousands of people chaos on the streets of moscow when clearly today is the first day that that many people have come out when did you see it when you refer to the fox news network showing footage allegedly of moscow and yet it was one of the protests in athens with the tear gas in the riot police if they observe if you will what was watching closely one could actually see the street signs in greek so you know obviously it wasn't occurring in moscow but let's talk about the main opposition leaders in russia here we know the kremlin has allowed for these democratic
5:08 am
demonstrations to take place but when it comes to the main opposition leaders how much influence do they have we do understand that one of them is closely tied has a very close friendship with the international republican institute in washington d.c. . that's right then you're talking. about bertie's them so who is part of a political party in russia has been in russian politics for decades he in fact was the former deputy prime minister and he has arrived at this protest he's known for for having connections to washington he doesn't hide that himself is very public that the national endowment for democracy while we're speaking about all this kind of seeking the u.s. sticking their nose into russian politics very openly is supported by the national endowment for democracy is probably one of the most well known opposition figures that he is here today but really i would say the rising star of the opposition is not associated with the party is the next in the guardian he in fact is in jail he was arrested on monday at the first protest we saw after election results and he's
5:09 am
really a blogger quite very well known in russia known for his anti-corruption movement what do you not known for this is i think it's fair to say almost never covered in western media is the fact that number one is a very open nationalist he's known for speeches about how russia is for russians which of course anybody who knows the history of russia that's a very dangerous mind and you can see footage of him at the protest on monday actually making a very clear statements to quote him saying i will go cut their throats and stuff like that and there's footage of bat on youtube as well if anybody wants to have a closer look at it but this isn't a good example of how things are covered very differently and to get to know the russian opposition you really have to look closely there here today it's not just the opposition here a lot of people have just come out as people as russians they're not associated with any political party and that's something that's very important a lot of people just here to show solidarity with the fact that they believe that
5:10 am
russia deserves free and fair elections and according to them they don't believe that these elections were carried out in that manner. he said he said i would live in central moscow thank you. we are keeping a close eye on developments on the. web site go online for the latest video feed on the. protests. follow the. videos of the demonstrations just. today. these are the. operation today.
5:11 am
without you life from moscow and i was still on the way for you peaceful squatters targeted by police. there's nearly a million buildings in there in the u.k. and people freeze to death every winter i would counter that with. we talked to some corporate of protesters in london about why the law has branded them as terrorists. and demonstrating before of course why rallies are being held worldwide for the release of a man sentenced to life supporters say that he is nothing but a political prisoner of the united states. or the final score in brussels was twenty six to one in one of europe's most important political matches for decades britain was the odd one out as are all the other e.u. states agreed on a new pact designed to stabilize the euro and attempt to solve the ongoing debt crisis british british prime minister vetoed attempts to change e.u.
5:12 am
treaties over fears that his country's national sovereignty and financial sector would be hard for the rest of the e.u. states will now work towards a pact to enforce a rigid fiscal and budgetary controls on punishments for big spenders of the new deal should be ready by march however deputy editor of business insider magazine joe wise and paul says the meeting did not produce any tangible results. we haven't really accomplished a whole lot the germans merkel probably feels pretty good because she hasn't given too much. david cameron maybe you will you know the fact that he rejected the rest of europe might help him politically but it seems like we're still a long way from solving the euro skeptics vision and predictions are basically country the project is not working the keys the idea that all these different economies different peoples could be kind of melded into one and harmonize has not worked out. it may be salvageable though you know you could have. the rich.
5:13 am
countries on ongoing basis b.c.b. could step up and do much more and you know you can't write the whole thing off yet but this is a very severe crisis that basically infects everyone including the richest countries in the euro zone meantime the corporate occupy movement the flared up in the us about three months ago has now spread across the globe in the british capital protesters are growing in numbers while claiming commitment to nonviolence but the authorities may not make the same commitment as aunties i have a bennett now reports. tense dreadlocks even didgeridoos but all the occupy london protesters really terrorists the city's police force seems to think so it sent a letter to banks and businesses in the financial district warning of the terror threat posed by occupy activists it puts them in the same bracket as al-qaeda well
5:14 am
i'd say to anybody who believes it to come come here and have a look for themselves you see that we are totally peaceful protest is preposterous to say that the backlash of criticisms force the police to admit its wording was too strong but it stands by its warning to big businesses to remain vigilant issuing this statement we've seen crime linked to protests in recent weeks to be around groups entering office buildings and with that in mind we continue to brief key trusted partners on activity linked to protest this is the building in question occupies so-called bank of ideas activists moved in here nearly three weeks ago it had been empty for months the apparent terrorists now use it for meetings and lectures on how to solve the current crisis they can even count celebrity backers and politicians once they get guests and a huge number of people want to see a different kind of economic system that's what people here stand for i want to come and lend solidarity to that the u.k.
5:15 am
is complicated laws on squatting mean the owners still haven't been able to vic the new uninvited tenants since the building wasn't in use the activists don't see why they should leave is it fair to occupy private property. is it fair that there's nearly a million buildings empty out there in the u.k. and people freeze to death every winter i would counter that with this so far this is the only building processed is have occupied they belong c.b.s. it was empty before it was taken over as the swiss banks the conviction order for this building beefing up security at its main offices just across the street as they feel the protesters could spread both u.b.s. and the financial services authority refused to comment but they clearly heeding police advice security is tight in the money district. as small group of people recently stormed the offices of a mining company during a national strike they claim to be part of the occupy movement those here though deny any links but that hasn't stopped police tarring them with the same brush it's
5:16 am
just unfortunate that some people actually have done that and it's because in police attention. it's going to label of such as people will get a few bad apples going in here and in any organisation and they've said well that they're all like human on main it's just not true the original occupy camp hopes to keep its protest peaceful a victim anyone using its name as an excuse for violence they might not be al-qaeda but any minority prepared to step the wrong side of the law could play straight into police hands either bennett's london. washing off the line from moscow demonstrations have been held in cities worldwide calling for the release of one of america's most famous prison is. was in consecrated thirty years ago for killing a white police officer it's a crime that he still to this day denies the convict was on death row until this week when a cold commuted the sentence to life in prison his supporters claim the full my

black panther movement member is an innocent political prisoner activist mike farrell says that abu jamal deserves a fair trial but she apparently never said that. it is like many other cases in the united states a case where race entered into the prosecution where there are serious questions about the not only the efficacy but the effectiveness and fairness of the trial the elimination of the death penalty in this case it's really only one step and i hope it doesn't mean that now he's going to be consigned to a life without parole and everybody's going to walk away and say ok we won because in fact justice has not been served in this case it's on the record now that the judge was biased racially biased it's on the record that the. police corruption in the in the philadelphia police force involved the suborning of perjury and the actual extortion to get witnesses to perjure themselves this trial was corrupt from

the beginning and that's why amnesty and human rights watch and so many other organizations say justice must be done and say that you've got to start with a fair trial. i know just turning eighteen minutes past the hour here in the russian capital israeli airstrikes on gaza are continuing. up tensions in the region even further and killing four people since thursday the most recent happened early saturday morning when the israeli air force struck targets in gaza it's unknown whether there have been any casualties at this point there were dozens including children and one infant have been ruined by. the way. it's one of the major reasons alongside a massive unemployment rate the palestinians are fleeing elsewhere to find work and a new life as artist explains even a country fresh from a bloody civil war is seen as a land of opportunity. here is where god is dispersed and unemployed gather

thousands who are hoping that the war in libya can offer them over spite from the hardships of war on the doorstep. we don't have any source of income prisoners are in better conditions in the us that's why people want to run away from. the queues here are long and full of hope. and i'm happy to do any type of work there it is make a difference just to get some income so my children can survive. the united nations puts unemployment in gaza at forty five percent two in three gazans live in poverty and every year the ministry of labor says another thirty thousand people joined the ranks of jobless ever since israel imposed a siege on gaza nearly five years ago the private sector has all but grinded to a halt. to the economy and gaza is dependent on israel it's the way israel set it up all the materials we need for industry and construction have to come from israel through the israeli ports and airports we have no direct relationship with the

outside world before the palestinian uprising in two thousand tens of thousands of gazans worked in israel they pass through here areas the largest border crossing between israel and gaza but as you can see now only a handful of people trickle through each day now. was a painter and would earn about thirty american dollars a day enough for his family to survive on but in the last seven years he can't cross the border and with no work this side his children often go to bed hungry he was one of the first to sign up when a call went out for people interested in going to libya to register i don't care if it's libya or not and ready to go to mars for the sake of getting food for my children i can't give them more than twenty cents a day to survive on can you imagine that i must says israel promise to lift the blockade on gaza as part of the recent prisoner exchange that freed the captured israeli soldier but israel says it made no such promise this is the control. of the control of the people in gaza. today the freely with.

israel is the me and cause me of the zone for the siege in gaza and this is where the government did not deny israel says the siege is for security reasons and is afraid materials like cement and steel could be used to build weapons and military fortifications police here r.t. on the israel gaza border. i know so just take a brief moment here and r.t.t.y. check out some other world news for you in brief with the world update here a fresh wave of clashes between security forces and government protesters has left at least twenty four people dead in syria fighting erupted in several major cities as thousands took part in demonstrations are still calling for the end of a president assad's regime and activists claim children were among those killed. after a major oil pipeline serving. blown up it is. time an

thirty six years ago the inventor of the hydrogen. fighter for human rights in the soviet union. won the nobel peace prize. for one line a glance of the red moon star gazers across the world are gearing up for the last lunar eclipse to happen in years to come we report on line. twenty five minutes past the hour here in moscow but friday the biggest day of discount shopping in the united states may be over but sales are continuing in the run up to the christmas holidays so of course our very own resident in the big apple laurie just went to ask people in new york why we are obsessed with buying stuff.
5:26 am
there's no doubt we live in a consumerist world are you sick of it this week let's talk about it's christmas time so i think it's normal. to buy something you know why is it normal to buy so much more stuff just because it's jeez this is birthday. good question there's no thanksgiving it's black friday so i think that's sort of a real cultural shift you know what does it say about us as a culture that when we're so obsessed with buying stuff. that we need to get a life i think it's because the human nature has a longing for something and they've decided to fill it with things instead of a spiritual focus to those things get in the way of our spiritual quest i absolutely believe so because i think distraction is one of the keys to getting humanity our focus this isn't important anymore so you have it you feel good and
5:27 am
then and there you are looking for something else yet and then you feel bad because you bought something that you didn't need yeah this is happened way before you were born that's how it is yeah times with additional money was made was to train the volume with the thought the manner of. buying trading making selling is the way to make a living so we're prehistoric caves covered in neon lights with logos plastered all around us they are right now around us but the technology was available sure would be i believe in recycling i believe in you know not consumerism but go to your local salvation army exchange what does it say about our culture that we are so just posable. that we are exactly that we're looking at life in a really shallow way how do you think history is going to remember at this time and age as consumers i'm going to be a part of that yes it's very wasteful because i'm i live in france and my family
5:28 am
very careful with their money my family and. they think twice about buying stuff so i listen to them it does make me more careful but i'm afraid i'm consumed with the book you're caught up in the times i've been at times here whether or not your sick of the pressure of our consumerist culture the bottom line is when it comes to buying stuff you don't need maybe it's best to just say. no. and as i know the hospital here in moscow i do stay with us if you can i just a few moments a rather noisy documentary we explore the link between music and violence in our special report but before that though a recap of our top stars. will .
