10:01 am
seven o'clock on saturday night here you're watching with me. a twenty five thousand strong opposition rally in moscow is breaking up following a peaceful protest in the heart of the russian capital. was issued after sunday's parliamentary election that the opposition claimed was rigged. has details. just some several hundred people laughed at moscow's biggest protest in some twenty years of cars gone on throughout the day without any kind of incident it has been very peaceful protesters were calling for that and in fact organizers have praised police restraint certainly there's been lots of security here in central moscow but like i said so far everything has gone pretty smoothly i just want to step out of the shot and give you a better idea of what's happening you can see people trickle out no more flags people just walking through the park slowly making their way home no more music
10:02 am
music was playing throughout the day lots of flag waving and so on really just thousands tens of thousands of people coming out in moscow today to call for free and fair elections ah basically protests started earlier this week on monday and tuesday and then we saw a bit of a wall as people prepared for this big protest they didn't get the kind of outcome that they were expecting although it has to be said some of the opposition speakers today claiming there was a hundred or a hundred and fifty thousand people here clearly that's not the case the ministry of internal affairs confirming that some twenty five thousand people came out to call for free and fair elections both president it's major event prime minister vladimir putin have encouraged that saying that people should come out and voice their opinions voice their demands for the central election committee has confirmed that the that the results are fair there were minor violations and they will be investigated this was a sanctioned protest there was another gathering at revolution square which is not
10:03 am
very far away there wasn't a permit for that most of the protesters who went there are slowly and peacefully made their way to this sanctioned protest but some of the harsher comments we've heard from the government in particular blasi mir putin to worry about actually outside comments about the russian elections and russia in general specifically coming from secretary of state hillary clinton which stated that the russian elections were neither free or fair of lazy or putin and many russian officials see the. it is stepping over a line of life news which is the russian publication on their website you can very clearly see e-mails which are written between goalless which is an observing commission that did take part in these elections with which found these so-called violations transactions email checks actions between them and the sec and the the department of state of course maybe a coincidence that those comments came from hillary clinton and the connection with the doctors they were there funded partly by them and there's also evidence of
10:04 am
observers actually trying to confirm how much they would make for each and every violation that they find solace didn't deny the claims they did say that they would launch a legal action against the life news because the e-mails were obtained illegally but they did not deny that these emails were in fact it was to be observers and the u.s. department of state we saw pictures on fox news clearly they were athens you saw greek writing in the background palm trees even maybe a bit more entertaining and a little more chaotic but it certainly wasn't moscow where you had c.n.n. showing pictures of a rally that took place last december a nationalist ethnic rally which was violent just outside the kremlin they did file a correction but certainly if you watched any of the major western networks this week you didn't exactly get a clear picture of what was happening on the streets of moscow certainly there were tens of thousands on the street all week but it wasn't chaotic this is the first day we really saw this many people come out to voice their demands and we saw
10:05 am
rallies across the country of course russia the biggest country in the world they began in bloody of all stock out west out east i should say and then across the country and in central russia also in st petersburg thousands came out there we know that there were minor scuffles with police and some ten were arrested not the case like i said here in moscow where things have gone very smoothly and they have been and this has been a peaceful rally but the opposition really does have many faces it would be hard to go through all of them we saw a lot of different parties here from the communists to yabloko. the national bolsheviks the two that i think we can focus on because they are the most well known are them so actually has connections to the west he was a former deputy prime minister i know he's been in russian politics for years very well known in russia and abroad as well often makes trips to washington and he's openly supported by the national endowment for democracy he was here today garry kasparov the world's chess champion a very well known in the west did not come in from new york from the protest we
10:06 am
actually heard some complaints from the opposition about that and then there's probably i think it's fair to say the rising star of the opposition not affiliated with the party alexei not valid and he is a blogger very well known he writes a lot about his movement for anti-corruption here in russia where you don't hear a lot about him is his nationalist line he often speaks about russia is for russian if you listen to some of the speeches that he made at a protest on monday where he was arrested and he's being detained for fifteen days so he wasn't here today a lot of his supporters out but what you don't know if you do look closer at some of his speeches they do tend to be out excuse me they do tend to be on the line they hate speech is one of his quotes was i will cut their throats but the lot of people here are just coming out to demand free and fair elections not associating themselves with any specific target. and he's in our reporting right there from central moscow well you know we heard from i guess hard a. professor of political science at innsbruck university he says the protests are
10:07 am
a good sign for russia's political life while u.s. criticism of the country's election smacks of double standards. it is indeed encouraging that the bench of order to allow the demonstrators gathered there is to demonstrate against polish or to. deal actions anything which actually sleep or. encourage change and i think it's a positive for russia to marshal some media particularly let's. treat the russian leases. differently if i want to say please the united states what is going on in the. human rights and freedom of assembly is a question for all this is are we going to release the question why did the us. why did the not not come to us so strongly against election results and that's a quite a challenge for him. is in because the u.s. has strong economic and choose to teach interests in this region so you see on the

to brief key trusted partners on activity linked to protest this is the building in question occupies so-called bank of ideas activists moved in here nearly three weeks ago it had been empty for months the apparent terrorists now use it for meetings and lectures on how to solve the current crisis they can even count celebrity backers and politicians amongst their guests and a huge number of people want to see a different kind of economic system that's what people here stand for i want to come and lend solidarity that the u.k. is complicated laws on squatting mean the owners still haven't been able to vic their new uninvited tenants since the building wasn't in use the activists don't see why they should leave is a fair point private property. is it fair that there's nearly a million buildings empty out there in the u.k. and people freeze to death every winter i would counter that with so far this is the only building process does have occupied can belong c.b.s.

it was empty before it was taken over as the swiss banks a conviction order for this building beefing up security at its main offices just across the street as they fear the protesters could spread to both u.b.s. and the financial services authority refused to comment but they clearly heeding police advice securities tighten the money district. a small group of people recently stormed the offices of a mining company during a national strike they claim to be part of the occupy movement those here though deny any links but that hasn't stopped police tarring them with the same brush it's just unfortunate that some people actually have done that and it's because in police attention. it's going to label of such as people will get a few bad on it's own you hear it in any organisation and they've said well that they're all like you then on main it's just not true the original occupy camp hopes to keep its protest peaceful

release of a man who until a few days ago was america's most high profile death row prison a movie abu jamal was incarcerated thirty years ago for killing a white police officer it's a crime to this day that he still denies earlier this week a court reduced the sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole his supporters claim the former black panther movement member is an innocent political prisoner mike. deserves a fair trial she apparently never received. it is like many other cases in the united states a case where race entered into the prosecution where there are serious questions about the not only the efficacy but the effectiveness and fairness of the trial the elimination of the death penalty in this case it's really only one step and i hope it doesn't mean that he's going to be consigned to a life without parole and everybody's going to walk away and say ok we won because

in fact justice is not been served in this case it's on the record now that the judge was biased racially biased it's on the record that the. police corruption in the philadelphia police for. involved the suborning perjury and the actual extortion to get witnesses to perjure themselves this trial was corrupt from the beginning and that's why amnesty and human rights watch and so many other organizations justice must be done. you've got to start with a fair trial. to bear in mind more news available on line of thought such as a friend in need of the latest russian aid convoy leaves of course of us to help the serbian minority there who say they're being discriminated against by the local albanian population. and japan plans to use wild monkeys to measure radiation levels near the fukushima nuclear power plant but they claim the helicopters they've been using can't provide accurate take to get the full story.

10:24 am
a life and i think it's because the human nature has a longing for something and they've decided to fill it with things instead of a spiritual focus to those things get in the way of our spiritual quest i absolutely believe so because i think distraction is one of the keys to getting humanity off focus if this isn't important anymore so you have it you feel good and and the your are looking for something else yet and then you feel bad because you bought something that you didn't mean yeah this is happened way before you were born that's how it is yeah times with additional money was made it was made to train the volume was traced without the man who was. buying trading making selling is the way to make a living so we're prehistoric caves covered in neon lights with logos plastered all around us they are right now around us the technology was available you thought sure would be i believe in recycling i believe in you know not consumerism but go

to your local salvation army exchange what does it say about our culture that we are so disposable. that we are exactly that we're looking at life in a really shallow way how do you think history is going to remember this to how i am and age as consumers i'm going to be a part of that yes no look it's very wasteful because. i'm i live in france and my family are very careful with their money my family in law they think twice about buying stuff so i listen to them it does make me more careful but i'm afraid i'm consumed with. god when the time that i've been at times here whether or not your sick of the pressure of our consumerist culture the bottom line is when it comes to buying stuff you don't need maybe it's best to just say no. with r.t. now a post-election standoff or threaten to explode into

resolved the sort of political standoff see as a big victory of democracy by the opposition also has this big victory and of course that comes as a big relief for ordinary citizens of south as it is so what actually happened here following the presidential vote when the opposition candidate our joy of his victory in the presidential runoff here held here earlier in november. her rival and the tolly big believer who actually was expected to win they spoke out and who was seen by many as a favorite in this vote reported to the supreme court a saucer to vote violations committed allegedly by his team and almost immediately after that the court ruled two and no. the outcome of these the vote and also to ban alagiri of
