10:10 am
a small one like this german company which produces isolation materials for gas turbines. taxes salaries competition it's enough to keep any business in one's head busy but many still wonder why rules different when it comes to the big book or in this case the euro then i wonder when a business takes a loan and cunt paid back in and says it's bankruptcy i think a state which keeps accumulating debt has to do the same it's no different from a company in that sense you don't borrow money if you know you can't pay it back but for some reason often this doesn't seem to be the case for the eurozone so let's take greece for example besides billions of euros which have already been allocated to bail it out e.u. leaders have approved yet another tranche the enos to pay off its three hundred sixty billion euro debt preventing it from going under and taking others with it many fear the tactic will not work it's all about physics review no matter how
10:11 am
strong the material is like this piece of metal with the right amount of pressure it will break. and unfortunately for the euro zone the laws of physics are called universal for a reason meanwhile the pressure is rising and the latest e.u. summit in brussels showed the economic crisis is creating cracks in the union britain walked out of a deal put forward by germany and france to revise the e.u. treaty and create a fiscal union with a tighter grip on finances but analysts to warn the integration may take too long with some countries facing a possible referendum on the deal this year a package will take until march to implement and i think in the meantime the eurozone in particular the mediterranean countries are extremely vulnerable indeed and i do not discount a breakdown of the markets will overwhelm the whole europa. and that the eurozone countries and the e.u. institutions will find themselves simply not big enough to cope with it meanwhile
10:12 am
inspectors from the so-called troika which consists of the european commission the european central bank and the international monetary fund are looking to provide athens with a new one hundred billion euro bailout i would call it the lying circus the banks who are trying to save their necks who are put on the line with bad loans to corrupt governments and. waiting and expecting the european taxpayers to pay their bills especially the bonus bills sure christmas is big in europe but billing of the euro for the sake of the banks is becoming one expensive present the dozens of protests that have rocked the e.u. this year are a clear sign of discontent over austerity. and it's highly likely the new set of handouts for greece will be greeted with anything cheer. or g.

germany. david cameron's note of the e.u. fiscal agreement was received with a mixed reaction at home and the prime minister enjoyed a hero's welcome from his conservative party but the decision deeply disappointed deputy prime minister nick clegg letter on monday cameron was trying to defend his actions in parliament gone from the u.k. out of the e.u. campaign and supported but has doubts about how the e.u. is going to work with this division in place. i think he was right to stand up to the germans and engage right to stand up to a little sarkozy but the bottom line is the facts are we are now more isolated than ever we're still be paying fifty one million pounds a day into the but now i have no influence over what so ever clearly the british people do not want fiscal review and clearly david cameron went to brussels trying to stop fiscal union and to stop the current of. the

destruction of the banking sector he didn't get what he wanted so he decided to walk out of those discussions and some people say he was a bulldog rather than the political but i think now he has to go even further and asked to give the british people on the subject we want less integration not more integration and certainly now we've got this fiscal union but the whole question is of course how will this fiscal union work how will these f.-u. work can they use the instruments of the i would say probably not and i call we have a situation where we the british will turn up for negotiations the other twenty six if indeed there are twenty six who decide ever then the day before and just before we leave the room or so mr cameron come we have another check for fifty one million pounds a day august is going to work. on our website artie dot com we're always interested in what your opinion is and what can be done on that to to save the struggling eurozone we're taking your votes right now on our web site bringing up the numbers
10:15 am
here we are so far most think the monetary union should simply be dissolved what about thirteen percent say the euro zone should expel the weakest members about a tenth of the things that a single currency requires a single government and a minority support sanctions imposing financial discipline what is your take will eric live at our dot com. in syria the violence intensifies as clashes between government forces and army defectors spread this sunday twenty three people have reportedly been killed in battles in the south of the country when you fight of a ruptured to the north west to discuss the ongoing violence in syria now joined live from beirut by dr rania mastery is a professor at the university of thank you for coming on the program today these are recent reports about clashes in fatalities seem to come from just one source that of the syrian observatory of human rights actually based in britain how credible do you think this source is being so far away from the heart of the
10:16 am
conflict. well there are definite questions on the credibility of the syrian human rights of surfer tori particularly when it comes to the number of victims that they are victims of the government atrocities and many a time anyone who dies in syria they claim that these are victims of the syrian government atrocities what we know is it is really hard to find a credible source it be it's what we're used to in the arab world which is as good as the it which is no longer credible syrian human rights observatory which there's questions on its credibility or even the syrian government which of course there are questions on its credibility so we're faced with a lot of questions and yet what we do know on the ground is happening as we know that there is were pressure being committed by the syrian government there is violence being committed by the syrian government and there is also a small group of armed protesters that are also committing violence against the syrian army in terms of the numbers the numbers are unfortunately quite unclear. let's stick with the issue of credible sources here because we've got similar reports that already prompted the un the high commissioner for human rights to
10:17 am
directly call for foreign intervention in syria now if we continue to hear about spreading violence and the growing number of victims do you think that could actually happened. yes there could be foreign armed intervention in syria this has been something that certain western powers have been working towards primarily the united states france also supported by turkey the league of arab states has a very unclear position on this so that there have been moves internationally for well armed intervention and what is worrisome is if they place armed intervention under the rubric of humanitarian assistance and personally i don't understand how we can provide humanitarian assistance through bullets or through bombs or through weapons that is not how humanitarian assistance is provided so it is a worry when we talk about armed intervention now if the united nations is that we really interested in credible sources there are ways that the united nations can find out exactly what is happening on the ground they did it previously with regards to the thirteen years sanctions imposed on iraq and with regards to the
10:18 am
longstanding u.s. occupation of iraq there were ways that organizations were able to go into countries unable to find credible information on an armed intervention has never i do what was i was going to do the issue of bringing i know i'm sure there are many other people around the world who say that the sanctions don't work and others when it comes to syria is it a case of using violence to quell violence or sanctions are they really the only option. you know no i didn't specifically i'm opposed to sanctions and what i was saying is if we wanted to figure out more specific credible sources on what's happening in syria we can do that but sanctions can be another weapon of mass destruction we saw that in iraq we need to be very clear if there's going to be sanctions on syria what is their official purpose and how targeted are they and who are the forces that are imposing these sanctions and how credible are those forces and how legitimate are those forces so it's a very complicated situation and i will i am very reticent to simply be calling for
10:19 am
economic sanctions or diplomatic sanctions or armed intervention because there are all teary or motives that play here externally and i would say that there is there is no government yes theory of motive you to world syria motives play what what are some of those motives if you would. well i mean what you could say we haven't a several different function factions here working here of the united states and france and turkey and certain members of the league of arab states that of course are working very strongly to push for an allied government in syria our government that would do its wishing as a government that may be more akin to the truth a new government more it came to what the mubarak was in egypt prior to his downfall so i government that that would not not support resistance against israel a government that would work towards a peace agreement with israel a government that would open up its economy is fully for the united states so there is that group and then of course on the other side you have russia and china that are trying to maintain particularly russia that's trying to maintain its sphere of influence in the region with syria being its main stronghold so you have these two
10:20 am
factions you have the external syrian opposition that of course is trying to win western favor to place it within syria for it to replace the syrian government and so then it's telling these western factions what they want to hear you have the syrian government that's trying to light self even closer within the russian with russia and all the while you have the syrian people that are caught in quite a difficult position right now where they're continue to face repression on the face of the government and they continue to face a great deal of armed k. also with as many people have witnessed the year of two thousand and eleven the arab spring and the issue of regional reverberations of this past week there were also several incidents of violence in syria as in neighboring countries or one where an explosion struck southern lebanon and that's the story storming of the syrian embassy in jordan is there a danger of violence spilling over the syrian borders do you think. most definitely without question there is a danger of violence spilling over i mean if chaos continues in syria then yes we can expect violence to spill over i see that as being

a very likelihood scenario i thought irani of us re professor of the university above and talking live from beirut thank you. pleasure. you're watching are today. now a family themed credit card is hitting the u.s. markets just in time for the holiday shopping but it relates to one of the most painful episodes in ukraine's history when millions of people starve to death cross the soviet union with some or three million lives claimed in just ukraine alone and as artie's alexy got a few reports there are many in kiev who view the move as an american banks attempt to cash in on tragedy. almost a decades on ukraine still mourns those who died in the 1930's famine in the u.s.s.r. known here as the whole of the more and it's a rare example where political forces more used to in fighting put aside their differences to unite in common cause now the ukrainian diaspora in the united
