that was suspected of being extremist. and up next russia's political life took its fair share of world headlines this month with a parliamentary vote as aftermath in the limelight as for the global view from russia r.t. now hears from the man who now leads the lower house of parliament's foreign relations committee about where the country's attention will focus stay with us. i'm joined today by alexei pushkov the newly appointed chairman of foreign affairs in the russian parliament alexei thank you for being with us you come from a background in television what do you think that you're going to bring to this position that other people lack. well my big ground is larger than life but to be i have started my career as a diplomats in the united nations in geneva i was part of the russian delegation in
9:32 am
soviet the gauge of. the committee on does armaments basically i never left the field of foreign policy studies so i would not say that i'm new to the area. what. a person like me can bring i think during my work on t.v. i got a pretty accurate. feeling of. what the russian population and the russian citizens. think of russian foreign policy what kind of foreign policy they would like to. and. what images they have of their own country of themselves and how they place russia and themselves on the global scene i think it's very important that nation. foreign policy matches the. image that the population would
9:33 am
like to have of the foreign policy the russian parliament and you as well you begin your work in the wake of much foreign criticism with regards to the parliamentary elections claiming that they weren't fair what kind of a challenge does that criticism present to the parliament and do you foresee a response when i think the response has been already given president medvedev. in brussels he basically stated that the opinion of the european parliament. is not important for russia russia is not a member of the european union and so whatever the european in m.p.'s think of the russian elections is not relevant for the russian leadership. and i sing basically. take into account the statements which were made
9:34 am
on this score by the leaders even of opposition parties. this is a consular data the position of the russian parliament whatever. requirements and requests the opposition parties may have. they would like it to be domestic procedure the opposition parties in the parliament even those who insist that they were well ations on russian elections the north support the declaration of the european parliament and the statement which was made by hillary clinton they regarded also as a domestic affair. therefore i think that the parliament will probably stick to this position although as we have already seen there were some public protests against the result of this elections and some opposition party members of those opposition parties took part in this process i. know that the russian services which had dealing with those issues are open twenty or twenty one
9:35 am
criminal case so these things are being started i think they may be considered in the parliament but once again not because hillary clinton said it or the european parliament declared those. elections illegitimate i think that all the political parties which are presented in the state duma they consider those elections legitimate although maybe with some lessons they have accepted the their mandates they have been the first opening session of the russian duma which. basically is a declaration that they have accepted the results so you mention hillary clinton and the united states being specifically critical of these elections do you think that there's still a future for the reset and not reload policy promoted by barack president barack obama well i think that there may be a future for it but i think that it's time to reset the reset. the reason is
9:36 am
not just these elections and the american reaction to this election is a seeing that there is. a crisis of policy. as stated in the beginning to mine for a moment when russia responded positively to the. button that hillary clinton offered just a lover of during that meeting in february two thousand and nine. my feeling is that a number of contradictions have accumulated since that time and the. biggest contradiction is the issue of the american a.b.m. system in europe. very tough statement which was made by me to me did it underscore . in which he mentioned a number of kontum measures that russia may take if the. system is placed by the united states and europe without taking into account russian worries
9:37 am
on this score i think that it was a world sold over and so it was not just a knee jerk reaction or some kind of impulsive statement i think it is the result of the fact that the negotiations on the basically have gone into an impasse. summits where interim inventive. nato leaders in our last year was declared. a success but it was maybe a success in p.r. relations i mean. the spirit of the summit was positive but the results of the summit with neil basically we. russia offered a certain plan which could mean a compromise between russia and nato on the issue but this plan this suggestion was not accepted by nato and recently we have heard from the u.s.
9:38 am
state department that the united states will not allow russia to have a veto or. u.s. plans. a.b.m. deployment in europe. that russia will not be able to change the plan itself and the schedule basically this was a no which was the answer to offer to resume negotiations addressing the federal council of the russian federation midriff once again stressed that we are ready for negotiations basically he once again he's hand. although as i said the united states have already given us a negative answer so now i think it's up to washington to decide whether they want to share quite a bit of or they want to let it hang in the air do you think that both with russia and the u.s. having presidential elections and twenty twelve do you think that there's going to be some sort of impact on bilateral relations with that outcome. by that
9:39 am
relations especially such complicated relations as relations between russia and the united states and my feeling is that these elections will not be an exception and the effect will be negative. where is in calmer times i think. the reset of the reset could have been possible i mean two presidents could have met once again and decide what has gone wrong with their wrists and why we are in an impasse on a why this new tension which appeared between russia and the united states and maybe maybe with their personal. input they would have been able to overcome this once again to push the button but during the elections is much harder to do the republicans are taking obama from the right sometimes from far right positions and
9:40 am
basically all those positions are quite into russia they are accusing obama of being too soft on russia the story of the appointment of the new u.s. ambassador to moscow michael mcfaul is quite an illustration. i mean. paul has been accused of trying to per sensitive information to russia just because he made a reasonable offer on the some exchange of information on the future a.b.m. system which. does not jeopardize american security interests and still he was a kid and he was accused of being too soft on russia he was accused of being the architect of the reset policy i mean to be an architect of the reset policy is considered to be by the some of the republican candidates as a sin so what kind of reset can we have. in these conditions i mean the administration will have to be sensitive to this attacks they cannot just you know
9:41 am
pay no attention for these election times and as we know policies are being modeled after the requirements of the electoral campaign a mama cannot be insensitive to this criticism so i think we are in for a very hard year in russian you know solutions i think that in russia to there is a lot of disappointment with the reset russian. parliament or it's also russian population is of the benin that russia has given more to the united states than it has received from the united states we have offered i was support on iran sanctions against iran we have stopped to sell iran the c three hundred and to missile systems we have basically passed a resolution well that was not support with staind but basically we allowed the
9:42 am
recent lucian on libya to be accepted in the security council which opened the way for the nato operation in libya so we made a number of steps which were quite important for the united states and to go to support for those there are policies in the framework of the reset now what have we got in return the admission of russia in w t o basically i don't think it's really a kind of payoff because those elections have been going on for almost twenty years and i seem russia was doomed. to be inside the w t o it was just a question a matter of time and when hillary clinton decided that it is. affordable for the u.s. administration to attack. russia on the results of the election this has just shown that all this state of reset between moscow and washington is extremely fragile so i'm not very optimistic about the prospects of the reset in the electoral he both

their goal difference today countering the defeat of old trafford while wolves grabbed a lifeline with their draw at arsenal. and let's move on to figure skating where russians yevgeny pollution has talked up his chances at the sochi winter games in twenty fourteen the two thousand and six olympic champion spoke after winning the russian national championship for a record ninth time on his much anticipated return after knee surgery the three time world champion was in second place after the opening short program. six hundred kilometers east of moscow but he is free program put him firmly on top of the podium as our tour guide pinsky said good morning of a relative veteran of twenty ninth lucia is still aiming for his fourth olympics experience in such a way that he has a long way ahead of him. was in the audience for him so when i'm happy everything worked to plan at the nationals i'm pleased with my result and my ninth gold i'm happy i was able to perform the quadruple jump and all the combinations but emotionally it was very hard for me to compete for the first time after the injury
9:50 am
. and now i will try my best to prepare both mentally and physically for the sochi olympics i know there are still more than two years to go but when people say you can no longer compete at this level at twenty seven it's nothing but a lie yes you can if there is a will and a dream but. well apart from pollution russia's medal hopes at their first ever winter games in sochi have been given yet another based south korean short track legend who has finally been granted russian citizenship the twenty six year old captured three goals and won bronze of the cheering olympics back in two thousand and six he is also a five star overall world champion and has been starting to fully recover from a knee injury which he picked up four years ago however the newly converted russian aims to win in sochi and has taken on an appropriate name because. now the new year for motor sport starts on january the first with the annual dakar rally and after the retirement of russians that have led me

a jag in the country will be relying on some young blood in the callus team to bring home success from argentina chile and peru the new look team that was unveiled here in moscow will be spearheaded by the most experienced father edward nikolai of the russian team had been the perennial favorite in the trucks category but still has one child and retired from the sport in february though the seven time back our chad has moved up to become the family's team manager and the veterans the new generations will keep up a winning tradition. so usually we expect serious rivalry between our young drivers and those who had been trying to steer the farm from the russian team in previous years this year tough car race will be interesting and unpredictable but we hope that the rookies will be able to continue our great to an institution in the sport . basketball and russian side next have been pitted against euro league champions promise unlike us after the draw was announced for the top sixteen stage in barcelona so the champion spent about ten thousand italian side olympia delano

roundoff back group games so it looks like a stiff competition is in store for the side front because i am. not so i have been drawn against perhaps not to be and opponents include the operation the regular season and deep into the second time in their history greek outfit olympiacos and two more turkish sides standing in their way to the quarter finals. but meanwhile in the n.b.a. russian home club the new jersey nets lost one hundred sixty seven day on home course to the atlanta hawks on tuesday night and that's had beaten the washington wizards in a way for a game but were totally eclipsed by the boards who were playing their first match the visitors led by eight points to normal after a cagey two and a half minutes and they took a two digit lead still in the first quarter after the game you have none of which inflicted the biggest damage the serbian went on to finish with a game high seventeen points off the bench marshall brooks would pour in as many for the next but the home side never got close to the start and robin williams

last test all the stuff you know what would your advice be to young a russian basketball players who want to aspire to play in the best league in the n.b.a. coming off the hook into the word moving up to speak patience but also in your sleep just to know you have to sacrifice and make it should be our lives at the surface so if you still use a strike which is always rather your car you still miss school you have to start work all sleep there was no term for the word solution in our legal analyst be focused or less be assertive but that's all i've got here so a lot of guys believe yeah they've got three people sacrifice so really the best of all this is not about politics because i think very much about philosophy in the upcoming season. and that's all the sports these bison.
