hello eight pm here in moscow my name's kevin are you watching r t live from the russian capital and our top story global oil prices a spiking as the e.u. says it's agreed in principle to ban imports of a rainy and crude now the sanctions could come into effect by the end of january unless the round backs down on its alleged nuclear weapons program to rands responded to the sanctions with threats to block all trade through the crucial strait of hormuz leadings would continue deadlock in the persian gulf american warships are also present in the region with a mission to prevent any hindrances of passage let's get some more analysis on this talk now to professor of political science is from paris west university and on the defense server good evening to you thanks for being on the program and markets have already been reacting to the persian gulf standoff with oil prices edging up is it wise do you think for the west to push for sanctions at
11:02 am
a time when rising all prices could of course threaten badly needed economic recovery another big story that's ongoing as well to the side of this. well clearly from an economic point of view it is not wise but political point of view this is grandstanding and political. coming from leaders who are facing elections obama in the us and obama has very tough on iran because it is accused by the republicans of being soft on iran and so cozy quite discredited in trances trying to score a success so trying to bash iran something good for political reasons for this reader's on the domestic speech economically of course if prices continue to rise it would be very bad for the entire global economy what if iran decided instead that ok well we'll see a full sell our oil into china instead long term what effect would that have on the e.u.
11:03 am
well clearly china china would be delighted to buy oil from whatever source but i think the sanctions are likely to european countries as well and in fact that mario drag is asking for a delay for it to live because iran owes it to live a lot of money so maybe the sanctions are not going to happen in the way they were announced today but it would be very bad for european economies slow down it would also have an impact on iran but iran has other possibilities the most obvious one is of course selling to china. ok so if sanctions aren't working aren't really a way forward surely we're back to talks again then on iran's nuclear program surely that must be a way forward of course they've been stalled for a year in that time we've seen a comprehensive step by step solution proposed by russia and iran's also again invited observers to see its enrichment centrifuges up close it is wanting to talk why is nobody why isn't everybody not getting around this negotiating table again
11:04 am
then what's the stick here. i think because all the parties concerned have political benefits to draw from a kind of stalemate situation not only of the western powers but you reign in leaders as well and also it's really it's a liar's game here you know recently seymour hersh gave a very interesting interview on democracy now the american t.v. and independent website and he has connections with the israeli secret services and these really secret services say iran is not about to have this bomb so a lot is made about the possibility of a bomb but if it's really secret services and the former leader of sheen back to mare can actually iran's not about have a bomb we are actually facing a kind of game in which everyone tries to benefit from the opposition of the other being tough on iran is good for obama being opposition ought to be u.s.
11:05 am
is good for iranian leaders who are themselves quite discredited in their own country so everyone benefits from that eclipse all that economically everyone could be except maybe china if it get oil more easily from europe so what's going to give who's going to blink first you think. well clearly as you pointing out it's a case of brinkmanship. this would be very very irresponsible of for western powers to try to attack iran and then if you ran retaliated by trying to block the straits of hormuz the global economy it would suffer but i would guess that. beyond the saber rattling we're going to have a kind of verbal battle but no real. military action because that would be really really too dangerous and apparently even american leaders are aware of this so it's a tough stance but it doesn't mean it's going to be translated into military action
11:06 am
or very serious engagement because then everyone would suffer and of course a lot of this is going to be governed or the u.s. is reactions going to be governed it being a presidential election year that's going to have a big effect doesn't it yeah of course because the republicans who are far far far to the right are playing the ring in-car pretending that obama is soft on iran but obama is not soft on you or on the contrary he plays the tough card on iran as well so it's going to be a kind of you know decoration i'm tougher than you on your round and no one is going to play this guy hopefully it will just be a little political game because otherwise you know with all the problems that are the setting the global economy the debt since are there to be an additional one with oil prices soaring up once again so i suspect that maybe it sense could reveal in the good sense to go and always hopeful to hear thanks very much for your

thoughts on the program running something on r.t. fire. meanwhile iran's president has reiterated his support for a step by step plan proposed by russia we just talked about at their end resolving the nuclear stalemate over comments by mahmoud and we did the made in a phone conversation with his russian counterpart dmitri medvedev under the plan no new unilateral sanctions would be applied to iran instead it would respond to questions about its nuclear program one by one then for each point clear nother set of existing sanctions on to rand would be eased or lifted altogether this proposal first made in washington in july last year hasn't so far for much support in the west with either your opinions on its big story it's rumbling on going on for some while yet no doubt what do you think about it had to form section of our website r.t. dot com to give us your thoughts to get involved this is the gist so what you've been telling us is some viewpoints on what's going on one viewer says the west can
11:08 am
do without iran's oil in the long run it is just provoking to rand to give an excuse for a military strike another poster is hopeful at least one of the sides will be sensible enough to back out on all out conflict because it could be nuclear war another opinion is that the u.s. will attack iran as soon as possible to set the machine in motion before america's presidential election this year. and the one poster argues that around the world have the courage to carry out its threats and start a war saying the west should go ahead of imposed sanctions but the forums are to dot com see more opinions have your say. prosecutors in the trial of ousted egyptian president hosni mubarak of called for death by hanging for him and his closest associates they justify their request by arguing that mubarak was personally responsible for every protest to death during the country's revolution the eighty three year old is currently suffering severe health problems this couple perspective on this and talk to professor mark ullman an expert in deed and international relations from bill came bursting turkey thanks
11:09 am
for being with us mark first off is the death penalty for a bedridden eighty three year old for want of a better word appropriate. well it certainly person was rich wise as well as the prosecutor who takes because they seem to mix saying that he had all good acts of violence so to speak and on the other hand he should have known least. solutions are going to hear him in the occupants of the justice rather than more importantly if mubarak is it can all be present when demonstrations you know there are partial terms already present state or perhaps. what about going straightest current remember when students look this year are so who are so it's very dangerous precedent to set international group ordered opinion with. the bar responsible who will reach. with the question if they will it's justin bieber the

clients and see which which if you if yeah i mean what about the whole tone of the prosecution here in the closing statement the prosecution quoting this a retribution as the solution i mean your opinion what exactly is motivating the prosecution when i say well the prosecutors and judges that matter everybody involved in this case don't have a bar. bouncer here. so there's a long term interest any. corroboration in the past the regime by being perhaps a little awkward because they now see a person which is not in a position to be certain your heart here is if you like straight critique. of the state bar what is the danger since news of revolutions elsewhere in the constant prompts or in russia when the outgoing head of strangers actually shoot digital market rate the cost of. violence it in the process whereby the revolution is nothing out of your job. so.
11:11 am
that was a pocket opinion but we broke in the house but what are. we we're far from judge and. here neither would you want to be but i mean the prosecutor also said mubarak did nothing to stop the killings yet of course i like a daffy or a sad he did step down when he could have clung on to power for a longer period should that count in his defense. well i would have thought perhaps a little. too far. but you also say what's the point of resigning. or bar.
11:12 am
to marshal quite. dark. mark before you go into roach they're going to have a dodgy skype coming through from where you are the night but we got the gist of what you're some are common folks i was visiting professor of international relations bill kent university danquah there for us was speaking to us a little bit earlier radio host and author stephen leatherman said he believes that the trial is merely a diversion from the continuing unrest in the country. this is a distraction this is to do. your believing. for each in their own trying to absolve themselves in the process thinking things are worse no one of the military and no also the people running the country the same ones closely allied with love that are used
11:13 am
to see people because all the grievances the people who do i think approaches the war and the people all the violence will continue to struggle there's a long way to go meanwhile in syria over five hundred fifty prisoners involved in the empty regime uprising there have been released according to state t.v. it comes out at league officials say the government's pulled out heavy weapons and tanks from civilian areas that something activists and previously said was untrue opposition groups also accused the massacres of misleading the league's observers while taking them to areas loyal to the government as pressure builds on syrian authorities the country's foreign ministries slammed the u.s. for interfering that south to washington sent an envoy to the arab league for talks about the latest developments but a route based political analyst and journalist dr xabi says the arab league observers are under immense pressure from the west. the arab observers that have been. sent to syria from the arab league in cairo have been working for the past
11:14 am
week and additional numbers of observers entering syria they are under a lot of pressure apparently the american pressure there are pressures by some arab countries that are pro-american on the observers to actually like the way they will draft their reports these observers the city and officials have been given the observers access to all locations in syria today the observations are visiting the prison in that. they have access to police stations they have access to different localities even in the different neighborhoods where there was a lot of tension now let's hope that they will let this commission do its job independently and will make the truth come out and the truth i think is that there are. gunmen shooting at the army there are some groups of gunmen who are creating chaos in syria they are profiting from. the movement it's such
11:15 am
a big shame that some western powers and some fallen intervention in syrian affairs is using these people and using the demands of these. political objectives and that's a very destructive move on the part of the united states and its allies in the region. i'll just let you know a bit later this hour we'll be looking at postscript feel libya the leader of the m.t.c. admitting the country could be on the brink of civil war and calling for an immediate practice around militias but says thousands remain behind bars over the previous political allegiances. marking one of the lowest moments since the onset of europe's debt crisis more than two years ago the greek government has now publicly threatened to abandon the euro the warnings came from the prime minister lucas papademos says negotiations over a one hundred thirty billion euro bailout package dragged on the pier warned that the greek economy could enter an uncontrolled collapse as early as march if more
11:16 am
cash isn't secured but it isn't greeks are at loggerheads with bankers refusing to write off any more debt while unions say they won't make any more austerity cuts the hope now is that a fiscal union will act as a last line of defense against the debt crisis but that's something that leading economists ario claim as little faith in. my system it is that this europe will not be able to form such a political union there is too much. countries to different. countries are too attached to their own so often they have different styles they have a hard time working together on international issues think of iraq the union in europe is not all that strong and is forced if you walk around brussels you if you like european union is for real but as soon as you are away from brussels and walk around in the country the rest of europe you see the cross was far away from from

them. and is not a real reality the people we live with. just a few of the thoughts we glean from economist are your claim where there is full interviews coming your way in about fifteen minutes time here on r.t. tonight. well with the e.u. mired in this debt debacle you might think that germany which has been bankrolling the bloc's survival effort would be most concerned about among many people there a bigger source of worry right now is the political system which many say has gone stale and no longer represents ordinary citizens as i can offer ports has led to an interesting phenomenon the rise of the country's pirate party. it looks like an ordinary scene at one of the many bars in berlin except there's one thing which makes this party totally different from all the others the parties they must get out and. translate the pirate party germany that's right and this is an annual
11:18 am
meeting of a political party and all these people or i'm only it's eighteen thousand members across germany like me treat was tired of the mainstream and i was really disappointed in. all this the same way. the faces of. the firefighters are different one of its key differences apart from the style in general is a software system called liquid feedback allowing ordinary germans the opportunity to propose policies online pirate stand for more transparency and freedom on the internet but when it comes to core issues like the economy and we don't have currently a stand on this this crisis maybe we'll have after the. next federal convention but this wasn't a problem of the previous election for the berlin state problem and when the port authority managed to win nearly nine percent of the vote securing fifteen seats most people who i talked to they say are just something something fresh to me like
11:19 am
because many germans believe that politics are cross to this time as the big players struggle with big economic and political issues but part party doesn't even have an official stance on the eurozone crisis or the arab spring nevertheless it continues gathering more supporters i mean a coincidence or an alarming signal stream politicians the free democrats party which is an go in merkel's federal coalition porter is the first to feel the change of heart from voters that actually lost that along with another four local volts across the country mainstream politics is also losing attractiveness because. there's often too little distinction or distinctiveness between different parties from different fields or areas sometimes between difficult to tell the difference between conservative and social democrat experts see the success to use the

internet as the new driving force changing politics similar to the we it was in films way t.v. over half a century ago so unless the mainstream adapt and change their tactics that mean i need to long before they could find themselves on the margins. or in germany. no one else is happening around the world to light a wave of explosions in iraq has killed seventy two and wounded more than a hundred the deadliest attack was in the country south claiming the lives of at least forty four shia. meanwhile in baghdad a bomb attached to a motorcycle went off near a bus station that was followed by three other explosions afterwards the violence has raised fears that insurgents are stepping up attacks after the u.s. troop pullout past month. former israeli prime minister ehud olmert spain indicted on corruption charges he's accused of taking bribes to promote the construction of housing projects or something dating back to before its time in office. already on trial for three unrelated counts of fraud and breach of trust but denies all the

a goodwill gesture the detention and the parole seemed entirely arbitrary some of the dictators supporters as these people to be just work for government agencies and others happen to be domestic helpers or government workers and now equal before the law or rather before the absence of it the obviously in prison was triple his top detention facility under gadhafi the tories for its mistreatment and arbitrary killings of inmates but while all of its prisoners rest south free in late august as the rebels over in the capital dozens possibly even hundreds of makeshift prisons sprang out around the country according to u.n. estimates up to seven thousand allowed to get out the loyalists are being held there is little chance for justice or fair trial just a year ago these place used to be a school today demain last i'm being told here is that during the transition to democracy quick reactions are

a must while many in the new libyan government held positions of power. under gadhafi those who failed to jump on the bandwagon early enough and now finding themselves tugged behind bars. now in libya there are about a thousand people in detention and the problem is they haven't had any legal review haven't had access to a lawyer they haven't been brought before any independent judicial panel or judges so that's what we're calling for now is a quick and promptly go review and rebuilding the justice system the treatment is even more brutal outside tripoli the tunnel to where good the gadhafi forces used to launch attacks against misrata is still a ghost town many of its former residents live in refugee camps and even their extraordinary renditions by militia are common this man says he was tortured for several days before finally being released the route he beat you until you confess to things you haven't committed like entering homes or looting it's

a grueling dilemma many of these mothers and wives have to confront to pray for their loved ones to be rotting in a prison with torture being officially acknowledged and you know for their death children need their fathers and women need their husbands the government isn't doing anything to find them if they're dead that we want to know where they are more than a month since his capture libya's most famous prisoners still doesn't have access to a lawyer and while many dialyse feel islam's ability to have a fair trial he still appears to be better off than many of his countryman at least thanks to the limelight he's not running a risk of being executed like his father while many still are. artsy tripoli change of pace that we continue to explore all corners of russia series new day we're taking to the how but our screen at the far east it's in five eight thousand kilometers from moscow.
