c. and d. c. fox etc now so now first let me say that i'm really sorry that i don't get our show on your t.v. we're very quickly expanding and so hopefully will be on your airwaves in your area soon enough but in the meantime you can find all of our content online and you can live stream it as well now when we want to the crux of this comment for one i like the passion i too often filled with an uncontrollable rage right turn on the t.v. and literally the only thing that i see day after day is horse race political coverage not a minute of the stories that are actually important to our lives so the future of the internet for example because apparently that's not as important as what color sweater vest rick santorum is wearing today but keep watching your show and i promise that will keep working hard every day to bring in the news that actually matters to you and next i want to respond to a viewer who like our first commenter is getting a little bit frustrated with the media status quo illand crux commented on you tube i'm waiting for pm and a protect mainstream media act in which all turn the news outlets are outlawed and
1:31 pm
blacklisted from the net sometimes i think we should just nuke ourselves back into the stone age so we can start over again. you know i'd yeah i have to admit that i have my days when i wonder when they're just going to mandate what information we're going to be able to hear hopefully won't get there but that's why i think that we ought to pay more attention to something like the grand jury being brought against wiki leaks to see how certain journalism that the government doesn't like they're attempting to silence but i think that sopa and pipa really are one of the another one of the other initial major battles in a war to come to keep the internet where much of the alternative media live is free free from the regulation and free from the censorship i fully believe that it's something we're going to see play out in the next couple of years and i have to say that seeing the power americans mobilizing on the internet to fight back in the past couple of months does give me some hope that we might actually win now finally i want to respond to respond to a very kind of you are joe johnson a tweet is at us at the low to show appreciate your ability to not fall for the divide and conquer mentality of the elite keep being critical of obama dems and g.o.p.
1:32 pm
well we're happy that you feel this way joe i'm happy that you get it the i've shown you guys some comments or people accuse me of being too hard on obama but not on the right and then another comment that says the exact opposite some people just get a little confused when you don't follow the partisan game but that's what we're here for drew mind everybody that things aren't just left and right or just black and white so when we realize what actually unites us then they can't congress my rantings today but i will be back with more as usual next week. it's been a long time since the world is really heard from joining us on every public statements made during his continuing battle to appeal sweden's extradition attempts to try him for sexual allegations something us on fears is going to result in his extradition to the u.s. but now rolling stone's michael hastings had the rare opportunity to actually sit down with the wiki leaks founder one on one while he's under house arrest in london and awaiting his final appeal attempt with the british supreme court which is set for friday february first of this year three days that hastings spent with a songe also happen to be during bradley manning's article thirty two pretrial
1:33 pm
hearing that was held at fort meade last month so what does a son should have to say for himself about the u.s. government's case against him about the western media as abandonment of him the eruptions we've seen across the world in the form of protest and revolution and the future of wiki leaks he things learns that a songe actually has a few regrets so here discuss it with me is michael hastings rolling stone contributing editor and author of the operators michael thanks so much for coming on and i just had you on last week talking about mcchrystal now you got assigned to tell me about that why the sunday agree to do an interview with you i've been talking to the wiki leaks people for about a month i felt the songs was a fascinating figure in some ways i could relate to bear on a very small scale what it's like when when other when the government starts to really criticize your work it is a tough interview couple times and i've been out there defending wiki leaks and the mission of what they're doing because i think it's very important and there were very few journalists who were actually going out there and saying hey you know this
1:34 pm
is a good thing they're doing i think that a lot of people are probably carious about what assad and his state it's like he's been under house arrest has this thing around his ankle been locked away for months and nobody really gets to see him what's what's he like right now just julie he's cool he's cool he you know pressed to say that he's broke you know you know ice will do i think definitely i mean the way i describe in the story i stay isolated vulnerable and broke and what. i mean by that is that this is a guy who's used to moving around wherever he wants all across the world he wants something like forty high schools traveled the globe very freely for the past year he's been state he's been put in the same location they've now moved occasions but essentially he you know he has to go to the police station every day we can under an economic embargo essentially his own personal bank you know it's been shut down he wears a ankle electronic manical ankle bracelet around his leg you know a lot of his close friends who have had basically abandoned him a lot of the support he lost because of the various allegations against him and
1:35 pm
it's been so i think it's been a very tough year but i was i was impressed by his. just the way he could talk about a lot of these issues and that's why i wanted to sort of get his take not filtered through me but just let julian be julian and see what he says do you think that he feels defeated or like it's over for heaven anyway because one of the things that he's fighting extradition to sweden where he believes that that he'll be extradited to the u.s. but he stays in the u.k. does that mean that the situation is going to end up any differently i think he's in a very challenging legal situation on february first is going to be what could be his final appeal if you lose that appeal you might immediately be extradited to sweden within the next ten days if that happens we don't know what's going to happen you know what he's there not that he has been charged with anything they're just allegations and so when he goes to sweden he fears that he's going to be put in jail and we're never going to hear from him again essentially or it can be very difficult for him to get out of that that predicament so it's in even if he beats
1:36 pm
the charges in england there's still an interpol arrest warrant out for him and it's going to be difficult to travel in themselves to try to extradite him so it's tough it's a tough situation isn't giving up does he think that he's lost no matter what i don't think a guy like a saw and his sort of mentality is not one that's going to be defeated very easily and i think he sees this as a long struggle he's looking at this not as next month but he's looking i believe. years down the line at least that's that was my sense and he's definitely in a fight for wiki leaks life and to continue what they've been doing i think it's a very challenging and you know he has its critics who say he hasn't helped himself in some ways and perhaps that that's true but on the way i lay my let's get into some of that has regrets for certain things that he wished that he would have done differently over the past year i asked him that question and he said that of course i would have there are things i would have done differently my life otherwise they wouldn't be i hate those people who would never do anything differently
1:37 pm
specifically about what happened in sweden when he was alleged in these two cases of sexual misconduct he said he should have taken it more seriously i don't at the time he had just become a worldwide celebrity and i and i and i truly believe that when he was told about these things he just didn't he thought it was some sort of. he didn't it was a big deal and i think that was a severe miscalculation that he's paid a very serious price for i mean because of that he's been under house arrest for the past year something and it's been politicized to trial clearly and from his perspective i understand why he's worried about being extradited let's move on to like i said you were there during bradley manning's pretrial hearing here in fort meade and basically what's come out since that is we're monitoring very closely to this that it seems like they're going to try to get bradley manning to testify against julian assange and so you know i'm curious do you think that assigns care about what happens to bradley manning because it only affects because he also doesn't agree with the way that manning has been treated with the solitary confinement that was put in one i think it's both but i think clearly you know he's
1:38 pm
been a supporter of manning from the beginning and i and i think specifically you know they're trying to flip manning the government is trying to flip manning to testify against the staunch to try to get them get wiki leaks in the case of espionage act are going to say that we could leaks and bradley manning committed espionage now this is our this is to me as a journalist as someone who reports sometimes on classified information this is completely outrageous and this is why. much of the interview deals with sort of the criticism that assad is levels against some of the western press particularly in england in the united states because by distancing themselves from a side which by criticizing his hygiene his ego. by essentially disowning him they have made him made it easier for the u.s. government to investigate and attack a staunch now there are literally take on that do you think if when you look at the way of the guardian reacting when you look at the way the new york times reacted do you think that what they did was cowardly or think they were just playing it safe i
1:39 pm
think they were playing it safe and rightly so or not i would not have done that if i was in their position but the chances of me becoming editor of the new york times are probably quite low but yeah i think in a situation i mean you know in a situation like this when press freedom freedoms are involved i think as a journalist you have to take a stand look there's a lot of things you can criticize about wiki leaks and what and how they did things and that was very imperfect whether it's redactions or whether it's oh he should have listened to these other people more or whether you're upset with what he's been alleged to have personally done there's a lot of things you can you can criticize but if you're saying that if you don't like a song because his you know he smells and there's holes in his socks you know show me a journalist i could name you twenty five other you know pulls a prize winning journalist who have but they would never be treated that way the final point if julian songe works for the new york times he would have got a pulitzer prize. all right i also want to ask you
1:40 pm
a couple things about what has happened in the last year i know that about as well i mean you asked him about their spring asked about occupy wall street he basically said that things turned out the way that he planned he planned so he thinks that he planned arab spring early you know you have great julian the son reminded me of when i sat down to interview revolutionary leaders guerrilla leaders insurgent leaders even you could say and in that his viewpoint it's very. is radically different from a traditional journalist even like myself about what he's trying to accomplish what he's doing with the information and with wiki leaks and he uses journalism as a tool for this is truly truly revolutionary so his idea is that to release all this information at once which kind of like which overflows the system or overtakes the system and that's what makes these regimes collapse by giving people information now how much of the arab spring is due to wiki leaks i mean i think you could that's that's up for debate but i think you can you can clearly make
1:41 pm
a role clear make a case that look the information they released about tunisia and then later on about egypt had serious impact well he thinks that knowledge gives people power and then when you have that knowledge then you can't be taken advantage of by those that rule with you i guess you can say but do you think of the united states is an anomaly and that sense i mean there is a lot of information that came out and all of the cables and you know some of them were diplomatic cables had to do with a lot of countries but a lot of it was more crimes by our military and you can't really say that that's not necessarily the occupy wall street protest you can't say there's been a massive uprising because of wiki leaks here no i think well there i think there's solidarity i'm using were the words here i think there is a connection between occupy between what the arab spring anonymous occupy wall street there's a there's a connect there are these connections here which isn't just sort of talking about and playing into i think a lot of supporters say they would wish you would no longer focus as much on the
1:42 pm
united states would focus on other regimes in the world and that could take some heat off them and show that oh he's not just anti american which is you know a slur that gets sent against him that well and we open the piece with him talking about you know madison madison and jefferson. so i you know i came away with being a fascinating guy you know he was as advertised. you know visionary revolutionary difficult you might say but but it. but a fun guy to spend a couple days with our michael thanks for sharing i would love to get us on back on the show get to interview him myself thanks so much thanks for having appreciate it . are coming up next president obama finally made it official in on the he's done that pipeline and unhappy hour that's good could come to you even faster and one state is working on a law that would make it illegal for you to wear your pajamas on top of that.
1:43 pm
there are those who desperately need it to survive. misspoken is the time to give money to on the lookout. on gold and the fish. and the suppresses the prize the rights or the fruits of. those who don't get their share of the change. good bye got to god awful article in today's new and don't last but not the one not us that people need to know about it i mean not look any from the company from. those who suck it out to prosper. side of the seas and say. from you not from the. sea. nice nice is.
1:44 pm
no one can live without it's in one of the largest blood banks in the world. a lot of nigeria. on our t.v. . when we couldn't cover the question leads to a grave accusation the action suit is more as you know saga. the president who isn't supposed to hide anything. someone asking why do you make a secret of it when the powers to be suppress the voice of those who think different which is when you get experiencing very serious problems off of the saakashvili government came to power in two thousand and three but. that was when the problems began piling up. interviews were now off limits to our journalists they were all from peace not the few million it's the public when the attempt to protect property puts life in real danger that we have been deprived of the only
1:45 pm
nice to living have gone to the originals of only painters so they legalized the ownership rights on the basis of companies freedom becomes just a stage prop. the sky. the light will come down. so fast you can hire is going to be singing. well tonight we have a true glimmer of hope when it comes to the construction of the keystone x.l. pipeline the obama administration has announced that it is rejecting a trance canvass application for the pipeline that's supposed to stretch from canada down to texas and a statement issued this afternoon president obama said that he received a recommendation from the state department not to allow the permit for building the oil pipeline on the surface it looks like a pretty significant move in the name of mother nature however obama made it very
1:46 pm
clear that he based his reasoning on the looming deadline that was put in place by republicans in congress obama writes the announcement is not a judgment on the merits of the pipeline but the arbitrary nature of a deadline that prevented the state department from gathering the information necessary to approve the project and protect the american people i'm disappointed that republicans in congress forced this decision but it does not change my administration's commitment to american made energy that creates jobs and reduces our and dependence on oil now. the president is working hard to stay in the good graces of trans canada and point the finger at rational republicans he specifically states that his decision is not based on the merits of the pipeline itself and we should note that the administration has decided to let the oil company reapply for the permit as long as they come up with an alternative route so as you can imagine members of the g.o.p. are just firies over obama's decision calling it an epic job killer president to expedite of the approval. project but they approve a project that's been under review for over three years the american people are
1:47 pm
still asking the question where are the jobs here the president's going over to create twenty thousand director general were one hundred thousand indirect jobs but he says no. so once again congressional republicans are in a fight with the president and his administration republicans fall the side of a massive oil corporation on the surface it looks like obama is siding with the environment but based on his statement earlier today it's definitely not that simple as he explained in the past obama isn't working his way out of being stuck between a rock and a hard place he's attempted to appease the environmentalists by holding off on the pipeline until after the election year a move that could have been more votes and at the same time he's also trying to keep those who put job creation as a top priority on board including a divided f.l. c.i.a.o. by saying the trance candidate will have a chance at a redo and david roberts of grist made this point a tweet today he said no one should be under any illusion that has turned against oil and gas he was forced into this and will have to be forced at every step and
1:48 pm
from the looks of it he's right about his move was one that will hold off those who fight for the environment from jumping ship in the immediate months but the battle to end the keystone x.l. pipeline once and for all is far from over that said i do think the putting the brakes on the project even in the short term is a glimmer of hope. all right and now it's time for a happy hour joining me this evening is lauren lyster host of the capital account here on r t and comedian and young guys thanks for joining me you know let's talk fast food sally fast food it's easily accessible over the drive through is but now burger king wants to make it even easier for you to get it took a look. what they're doing is they're going to give you home delivery of your whoppers and your fries not shakes and not reckless menus and the fee is two
1:49 pm
dollars but they've got this great new technology they call it thermal packaging technology where they can kind of ensure that your meal is not. for two dollars if you want to be lazy and avoid the drive through or just going to burger king well together. i'm a big fan of delivery you know when you can get everything delivered i'm not exactly sure i'd go for burger king but like if mcdonald's were to start delivering muffins or sausage or weapons with cheese or maybe that sort of taco bell started delivering the cheesy gritty to crunches and i would be ecstatic i like how you thought this through exactly what items you'd like delivered and you should be delivering energy to crunch and a very fancy technologically advanced thermal packaging are those just the things that they put in it's only containers that i'm sure you know it's a bunch of glue i can't mention i don't know don't don't ruin it but it's not cool yeah i thought that this was amazing to have i don't even care if it's burger king which i'm not into but i was just happy that there is going to be more delivery in d.c.
1:50 pm
because anybody that's lived anywhere else knows there's more delivery practically everywhere else and you know over a little bit from that what do you think the kynges been warning us about this for years i don't know if you saw a quick clip of it there in the commercial he's been popping up in people's bedrooms and kitchens and stuff but he's already he's bringing it you're going to the creepy head in the morning is that what you want to wake up to want to ask you have we not i didn't say i don't think you know what i certainly don't like it seems like a little want to i just want she's very french. i think i think of hungry at dinner time. move on to the next story cosmo magazine basically is always talking about sex and what you can do whatever joy and stuff like that but it's sold on the shelves and any you know convenience store pharmacy or whatnot and now there's a campaign to basically censor cosmetic work. check out the cover of this magazine it's a cause moment and the cover is so racy we had to blur it for television but if you're
1:51 pm
at the checkout counter at the supermarket good luck because you and your kids will have a bird's eye view to all the racy comments and graphics. i we actually have a copy of the mag showing this to you should really. be going to be very specific words of sex and vagina i'm pretty sure those are the days there is you know the best sex ever sex is a bad word now it's really received you have to censor it and said i know are you ok down there that's important you know that words you don't even sense over john and i thought it was just you know john i think i learned a lot though from this today is like this is really educational if we can and if a guy likes you apparently he can give you he'll give you a thumbs up at the bar so i just want to yeah we get a lot of those all the time maybe ok simple once in a while that's the sense of the word limit but not for men can i say are important . article so it's just silly basically what they want to do is they want to be sold in the rap being that like playboy and hustler you know we're like you can't see the good in that i wish there were something pornographic and that there was
1:52 pm
nothing good in that magazine i read way too much of it today you know you read it cover to cover you are expert or go although i will admit though like i don't know a single adult woman that actually read cosmo and i do remember every teenage girl going through a phase where they all started dating cosmo before anybody was even having sex or like knew what any of these things were because it was kind of intriguing and you can buy it but if i didn't hear it censor it. wasn't so puritan tannic goal you wouldn't have the issue of people needing to pick up a cosmo order to get their sex ed i was just reading an article in f.t. a columnist who was dutch saying that the reason why they have fewer teen pregnancies fear abortion is because they parents have kids have sex in their home there's very much if you are tenable i just want to keep saying there's nothing good in that magazine there's no good tips they said like how to make sex great or whatever it was my cover i didn't see anything in there that was any you know education i've always like actually felt the same way they don't really have a lot of regard because if they don't have a lot to offer our let's move on to our next one here ok so senator chuck grassley
1:53 pm
basically was asked the question about the labor department stricter limits on child labor. and he basically said. they could exacerbate the childhood or the child obesity epidemic by making kids less active these are his statements he said this farm bill were greatly affect our programs kids won't be able to help on farms not owned by their parents and then he goes on to say it's interesting that this child labor bill goes against michelle obama's anti-obesity initiative how can kids be active if they're limited by this law because you can't tell kids to i don't know join a soccer team or enjoy sports do they need to do hard physical labor in. the face of literally how can get be active they're not coming into contact with that pesticides and the other things that these laws disallow them from working should but i'm a i'm in favor of child labor really all my clothes are made for children in. the stitching is much tighter i just i appreciate their work more than adults and if
1:54 pm
there was child labor in this country maybe we would bring a few jobs back from china and have that insourcing that obama and again you know how this child labor under way of although you know i know how they can you know you want your children know the children protect them from pesticides. last one twenty fifth go this is from louisiana. this is crazy dough. crazy says it all where's your pajamas with pride and those presumably and. she says they're perfect for getting stuff done in a hurry it is comfortable but not everyone feels the appropriate more so i believe there is too little it's not weird because it's what germ of the day should be on the work tomorrow. the guy wants to ban wearing pajamas in public you can't legislate sleepwear this is absurd what's considered puts although i know if you let specter into the pajamas are and i were pajama jeans right now you could see he was lying you know where i was going to join us off because it's like the look
