to push for the fall of hosni mubarak is that they want this regime to come out throughout the day and now we're seeing more celebrations like i said in the night people kind of strolling around the numbers are dying but throughout the day we heard a lot of frustration a lot of passion a lot of anger i have to say i've been here several times throughout the year and this is the most intense kind of protests that we've seen and if we just look at the numbers certainly these are the biggest protests that we've seen since the fall of hosni mubarak and what we're hearing is organization saying that this is it this is another suit in the key now is what happens because every other city and that has happened since the fall of hosni mubarak has been widely dispersed by the military and by the police and people here are saying that they will stay this time until the army lets go of power critics say that the army has purposefully created chaos in the country which might scare people into not coming out to protest against them unemployment is tremendous now you have people who are still being

tried in military trials alone it has to be said the military rulers lifting that emergency law they have released several people that were detained that were meant to have military trials but these things are still happening a lot of people say in terms of the process we're seeing a lot more severe clamp down and what's happening is protests have become such a natural thing really it's not really intervention here in egypt anymore it's something you see all the time although like i said today the biggest numbers that we've seen so it's a lot of similar kind of complaints that we're hearing about the army some of the things that we're hearing which we didn't hear under hosni mubarak is the fact that the country one needs a president that yes they now have a parliament but the parliament essential has no power that parliament has to write a constitution but these protesters don't want that constitution to be written under military rule like i said people on top three are now saying they will stay until the military steps down. meanwhile ahmed bought away executive director at the think tank transform e.-v.

says the army is more than happy to relax its grip on the country. it is a movie or step two words meeting that the man of almost all egyptians the emergency the condition of emergency the emergency laws were imposed right after the assassination of so that in one thousand nine hundred eighty one and it's been like a sword hanging over everybody's neck in egypt especially those who wanted. a city in politics that give extrusion powers to the police the security services they use the inability unwise and the inability indiscriminate against everybody who they have to resist or show any sign of opposition to the or regime everybody is relieved now that this emergency condition has been finally moved it is a concern for those who are used to a very authoritarian regime people just how are people have

a general lack of trust the words authority but so far i personally haven't seen any evidence of any indication that this with the incomes of the armed forces wants to hold on to power on the contrary i believe that the sooner they get rid of our the better for them they know that their epoch is for millions of new jobs manufacturing back on track and the war in iraq over and then modern gun barack obama has set out his style for reelection and using the annual state of the union address to do it party's lucy craft now has the details. very positive speech as you mentioned set against a very dire backdrop where a record forty six million americans are now receiving food assistance some thirteen million are out of work and millions more have abandoned on the job force all together but of course the president is as you mentioned launching his reelection campaign and touted a resurgence of american manufacturing talked about the sort of the issue of

fairness where every citizen will get their fair chance to live a good life to pay their fair share including the wealthiest sort of attached to the financial industry talking about how wall street will no longer be allowed to write its own rules announcing some new initiatives in that sense and really in some ways mirroring some of the rhetoric seen coming out of the occupy wall street movement although whether or not this tough talk is going to translate into realistic policies remains to be seen of course this congress is very deadlocked and there's not a lot of initiative for the lawmakers here to pass his agenda america remains the one you dispense of. security to threaten our citizens our friends and our interests well it's quite interesting this is coming from a president who campaigned on ending america's wars abroad who spoke at length about the u.s. declining influence abroad and completely changed his rhetoric in that regard the
5:05 pm
toughest language was reserved for iran followed by syria and china on iran the president reiterated his determination to keep iran from going nuclear talking about how the iranians are isolated how there is consensus with the u.s. in targeting iran that's not quite the case moreover he reiterated that no option is off the table he also was a bit more nuanced in regards to syria but he did say that a change of the president assad will see change in the air and on china he did announce a new task force that will be dealing with the sort of protection economic issues that will target china the biggest. laudatory remarks or of course reserved for ending the war in afghanistan or drawing it down in iraq he mentioned that no u.s. soldiers are currently fighting on the ground there did not get into the fact that some fifteen thousand federal bureaucrats state department visors and contractors are there and of course did not vote at all into the undeclared us wars abroad in

somalia and yemen in pockets don and of course the drone strikes that have been such a devastating part of the us foreign policy when it comes to the way it's been received abroad. for more on president obama's last state of the union address before the november elections we can cross to our washington studio an investigative journalist matthew veda matthew thanks for being with us how much of president obama's address is election rhetoric. well just about one hundred percent of it is election rhetoric and it isn't that much different from all of these stump speeches that he's been giving on the campaign trails trail in recent months it has just been. he's been burying people in class warfare rhetoric and blaming the financially successful four for america's economic difficulties so he's simply simply turning up the volume a bit but president obama pledged to work for the average american but he's
5:07 pm
promised change before it does anyone really believe him this time around. well i think that a lot of people have on the left have grown disillusioned with president obama and they aren't expecting that much from him he did accomplish a lot in my opinion they were not good things in the previous congress but he did manage to accomplish a lot it would be very hard for him to accomplish very much now that he has a hostile house of representatives that's dominated by the republican party and the democrats barely have have control of the senate so i don't think he's going to be doing very much. in terms of legislation for the rest of this year i want to shift a little bit to occupy wall street he also said that wall street won't be allowed to play by its own rules anymore do you think that the white house has listened to the occupy protesters or is it perhaps pandering to popular sentiment.
5:08 pm
well president obama and. former speaker nancy pelosi came out in support of our keep my wall street a long time ago and so i don't i don't know if the white house is pandering to occupy wall street they are on the same wavelength so to speak the same frequency they're both rolling in the same direction and i think that. president obama's views haven't been changed by occupy wall street but he views them as a valuable ally just look at now adays you cannot turn on the t.v. or the radio in america without hearing about the one percent versus the ninety nine percent the essence of class warfare rhetoric you hear it all the time now even conservative radio hosts used to use it so in that sense the occupy movement has been successful in reframing part of the four out of the national debate well
5:09 pm
matthew what about foreign policy he called iran a threat and warned syria couldn't undo the arab spring what do you think he has in mind for these two countries. i think that on foreign policy matters president obama is is all talk a little action the only place where he's really done anything is is in libya and that was only because where he offered a humanitarian justification i can't imagine president obama doing more than than rattling the saber and threatening sanctions with respect to iran and syria i just don't think it's in his nature to intervene in in that part of the world i don't think he'll do it on washington and face opposition certainly on major issues like syria iran from russia and china he also spoke of the u.s. as a major pacific nation is this a sign that relations could deteriorate between the u.s. and those countries. yeah that
5:10 pm
strikes me as a bit strange that he's referring to the u.s. as a pacific nation but i guess we are always lived on the east coast but i think he's there trying to send out some sort of signals that that he's he's doing something about china he elsewhere in the state of the union address he said it was unfair that in china many american products were being counterfeited movie and consumer goods and so on and he was very he seemed upset with about that it's not clear what exactly he can do since it's really up to the chinese. to police this sort of thing in their own country but maybe he can apply some pressure and perhaps he was a perhaps he was alluding to that kind of thing. well matthew very investigative journalist thank you for being with us. i think coming up on r t keeping an eye on big business. members of the world's economic elite

had set out to tackle the eurozone debt crisis and do some business deals along the way meanwhile some of the people most hurt by the financial crisis over the last three years are shut out of the conversation we'll have more coming up. the man behind some of the world's most scandalous revelations joining the sun just preparing to host his very own interview show and it's premiering here on our team the exclusive series is set to air in march with the global media already buzzing about what subjects the wiki leaks founder is going to tackle our london correspondent lara smith has the details. basically we knew that as and wanted to wanted to write and host his own interview show and we made it happen the show is going to be broadcast on t.v. it's going to focus of course on us ologies favorite topic control to see two thousand and eleven was a solid as his name became one of the most famous in the world and indeed became a byword for for explosives control to see when he releases the biggest as

a set of u.s. documents by his web site wiki leaks he's going to be interviewing a series of what he called iconoclasts visionaries and power inside he's going to talk about how to shape the vision of a brighter and better tomorrow that as i say is going to be progress on r.t. and we are hoping that it will be as explosive as the release of those documents was via wiki leaks we can't see any reason why it wouldn't be hundreds of articles from all around the world local newspapers international newspapers everybody seems to be talking about this cause to twitter to spare a light switch with rumors about the show's speculation about who might be interviewed by julian ourselves and of course he is a massive name but that's not the only reason why this show will be fascinating it's going to be filmed where a song has been subject to strict bail conditions things like signing in to the

police station every day being essentially under house arrest under the spell conditions for the last four hundred fourteen days even though no charges have been filed the first episode is also going to be shot a week before his supremes court tearing to fight against his actual decision to sweden for questioning on alleged sexual assault charges so as i say no use of rumors about what's going to go on he says going to be a new type of television of course he's no stranger to being on the other side of the interview is table i've interviewed him myself but if you want to find out exactly what's going on you're going to have to stay here on r t cecile so for all the details and the guests we can't reveal at the moment that's the secret but we will be having exclusive trailers and previews here on our to say watch this space . r.t. news executive michelob has more about how the network signed up julian assange. there were quite interesting discussions we said in our office off the christmas
5:14 pm
sharing ideas about the show's possibility is. obviously it would be on the channels really right now to get our son but i think it's quite natural that his show will be on our t.v. i mean our t. always tries to go beyond that to see other sides of a news story and sure the real reasons behind the news that you would see on mainstream channels when we talked to them was very calm and relaxed which you wouldn't expect of course from someone who's been under house arrest for more than four hundred days he was very full of ideas and some of them were born as we talked so i think this will be a very hard hitting show that top event on the calendar of any serious businessman the world economy forum in davos has got underway underway at the swiss alps resort the need for a structural reform and job creation was the main call for from germany's chancellor angela merkel as she launched the conference artie's lauren aleister has more. angela merkel talking about the eurozone crisis trying to convince this room
5:15 pm
of some of the most financial elite that she's got it under control that pretty much sums it up she took a real defensive you know let me tell you she said i realize that we're labeled as the headache for the global economy but you know i think there are more headaches to really this was to you could also see it is kind of merkel versus the bond market she was really trying to reassure markets saying if you want to attack us just know that we are promising to solve this crisis of course this is a time where we've seen euro zone bond auctions be a daily news item sell enough has italy seen those unsustainable yields of seven percent haven't seen him spike is greece going to get a deal with its bondholders in order to avert this disaster of a disorderly default so these are this is all the subtext where this speech is coming from and then she gets up there to say you know fiscal solidarity integration is the solution we're promising that even if we don't promise more
5:16 pm
bailout money or more central bank action which so many of the investment community seem to be pushing for we're trying to substitute that with this fiscal pact and a fiscal union to solve this crisis she also urged patience saying this is going to take a while but i think you know as you can see with everybody so concerned over the eurozone debt crisis patience maybe for some as well occupy davos is here of course in a year where we've seen occupy protests all over the world it's fitting that there would be one at the world economic forum davos style of course there and igloos but we've seen them have some actions protests they have them planned all week and that is their concern not being part of the conversation it's interesting because at the end of merkel's remarks she said you know the importance of davos too is to hear the input from the financial leaders and from the people that are there for politicians who then go back and make policy so i think that kind of plays to the concerns that people have a bounce off post which is that these are the world's elite that are networking and
5:17 pm
talking about these. issues these problems trying to claim that they're going to be able to solve them without their voices in the input of the rest of the world that they aren't the global elite so those are the concerns of occupy davos i went down and i spoke to the men and their many of the same concerns that we hear in the news about the debt crisis all the time they're built very well informed they're concerned about debt they're concerned about. the currency system that we're living in and these are all of the issues that they have and they don't think that it's fair that they should be decided or discussed. without the input of so many people that they impact. and if you like our stories you can always find them online at our team dot com here's what else we've got lined up we want our web site. billionaire investor george soros has a new prediction for america an all out class war find out why online plus on a lighter note. a russian family spotted this curious birds as it was trying out

president. i always aim high and whenever i launch a project i'm always in it to win it taking part in this presidential election is definitely the most important decision i've ever taken and i'm ready for a fight if you aim high in other things you definitely should aim high in politics . at the buttes hill especially can you know people often ask you if you're a crime and project but i'd like to ask you about something else you're very much you're smart you have the reputation of a maverick and you have a strong team how did you end up in a situation where no one believes that you are not a crime and project. i think almost anyone who joins the presidential race is automatically labeled as a kremlin project i will always want to know what it means i was a successful and wealthy person even before but i don't rely on government contracts with the whatever it's what if problem with people outside russia on the other hand don't really care if you're a crumb and project that say you make it to the run off or you run against putin
5:22 pm
what would people outside russia know about you first they know your take then they know about the scandal in france where you were practically accused of being a pimp and also the fact that you own the new jersey nets why should the west take you seriously because of appalls the point isn't whether it should or shouldn't it's up to me my team to explain to people that my goal is to change russia to have a specific program for integrating our country into the international community and making it world leader the whole world is changing all nations are having a hard time unless we change our country and develop it our relations with other countries will only become worse in the future i mean your last thought on this. let's talk about the us now with the three years of reset in relations russia and the u.s. have fallen out on quite a number of issues iran libya the spy scandal not to mention missile defense. would you build our relationship with america the beautiful go girl the first thing i do
5:23 pm
i would abandon the whole idea of the west versus russia i think it's about time we'll learn to differentiate our relations with europe are one thing and our relations with the us are a different matter russia and america have many things in common the nuclear shield the fact that both our countries are large and multicultural we face similar challenges say immigration issues even if the reasons are different both countries have that territory the only problem with america is that despite all that we don't really have economic ties with the us russia's share in the us trade is less than that of thailand below one percent if we build it purely political relationship it proves to be unstable and often emotional the world is changing and the old system of checks and balances he's not enough now i would suggest replacing nato with a penny european security system that's the left can russia join the european union
5:24 pm
. i think we should actually make it our strategic goal of course we'll need to consider how to organize this common market but strategically i agree with gen to goal who said decades ago that we need a united europe from lisbon to vladivostok i wish do regard russia as a superpower. national odd believe our country has an important mission but by virtue of our history we should set high goals and achieve them of course we haven't been doing that lately so mean you our people have lost the vision in our past we colonized the vast territories like say bierria brushes a special nation that like sixteen challenges there is a downside of course what i mean is that individual people are considered in significant in are sacrificed for the sake of a great goal but that was before me of course i'm no less. or do you mean before you before you become president just the opposite yes before i become president we

need to change that completely people should be at the heart of every grand arms of taking people should be the top priority people often ask you whether you're going to get married or not i only ask about this because of plots a cult i really done now a single president will take a look at russia's history russia has never had a single president or a single leader you say you were waiting for the love of a lifetime but your love of a lifetime may come tomorrow or in ten years and you want to be president today are you ready to get married if this helps you become president of book or form with no of course not if you put it like that i genuinely believe in love and i really hope it comes to me sooner or later i work a lot and perhaps i don't give enough time to other things including dating my guests my work takes up too much of my time it's either that or bad luck i'm lucky in many other things but i'm not lucky in love but i should be lucky sooner or later. you have been extremely lucky your whole life and you always emphasize the
5:26 pm
importance of good luck have you ever considered why you're so lucky actually i think that to be lucky you have to work a lot and that's the thing with myself with i often observed various politicians and the way they talk to the media especially during the campaign they often try to win you over with passion or emotion but you're a very reserved person at least that's how you appear to the media also when you talk to say all the right words but it all sounds like math is this if you're reciting the multiplication table do you ever get sentimental which are working everyone gets sentimental once in a while what can move you to tears blood and be my own little secret with book that's what you tell everybody what was the last time you cried that it was back in my school days when i was bullied by three boys who were older than me they con and me and there was nothing i could do the whole class saw it but later i caught them all one by one going to deal with these political office. thank you very much for the interview but thank you.
