these types of things actually think to take a long hard look to decide what are we going to do going forward because where we're flexible is troop counts we can move up and down in that but when it comes to technology speed things like a lot of manning people do a fifth term you're you're completely right on this time i think what we hopefully will see from the pentagon leon panetta is they will say let's make some cuts and some of the systems that we're not using i'm pretty like i mean there's little so many things that you could turn switches off at the pentagon and i guarantee you nothing would happen that's which cost us a million dollars to put up and to begin with so i think you will hopefully see some about a balanced approach from leon panetta going into this on ways that we can sort of help to make sure that we're not cutting retirement for our retired soldiers and our soldiers are comin on the ground but one thing that i do want to point out is that you know this culture of war that the republicans are trying to perpetuate now they're out there saying this is horrible you can't cut the defense department all of these costs are systems that we're not using on top of that we're keeping our troop levels above the troop level that they were before nine eleven and on top of that we're not in war ladies and gentlemen we are not at war right now we have no active war our job what and where the focus of the money is going is the special operations like troops that would kill present that killed osama bin laden and

that's where it needs to go and we need to get smart rather than big ok last question quick fire one of the big stories of the week was a dust up in the phoenix desert president obama and arizona governor jan brewer had what reporters are describing as a heated exchange over how brewer characterized a meeting the two had back in two thousand and ten in her new book and i have a feeling there's more to the story that hasn't come out yet so what was jan brewer really telling president obama on the tarmac wednesday did she say. against you and freddie and your little two or i've never seen you can you know up close can i touch you or not one more step till i see your papers please i think i think she may have actually been plugging the book because if you saw the reaction after that amazon it like went through the roof as soon as the president mentioned it so you know i think she may have been plugging the book and i think it's the you know his president is born his father was born in a foreign country would be illegal you know. i think you're saying she was saying i
11:50 pm
don't have to run a present for president so my book and frankly i think that what he was saying was just hold still we need to get a good shot so i can sell more of my books. it's amazing we have a consensus guys thanks so much vince richard. dan thank you very much for being with us. so let's say there's a bank in fact let's say there's a bank that calls itself the bank of america that's a pretty high standard for a bank to hold itself to the bank of america kind of behavior would you expect from the so-called bank of america expected to be right in the thick of the financial
11:51 pm
crisis that destroyed the american economy in two thousand and eight and then had to come begging to we the taxpayers customers of the bank for a bailout to the tune of forty five billion bucks would you expect this bank of america to be in the business of crane on the american home buyers conning them into buying risky subprime mortgages even though these same homebuyers could have afforded safe fixed rate mortgages would you expect this bank of america to thank us the american taxpayers for the forty five billion dollars bailout by trying to impose a five dollars credit card fee for using a.t.m. . how about this would you expect this bank of america to take our most important right as americans a right to free speech and tell us customers of the bank as long as we want to do
11:52 pm
business with them we have to give up our first member rights i wouldn't expect that and i don't think that you would either if that's exactly what the bank of america has done over the last few years and is doing all right now. businessweek is reporting that the bank of america is trying to impede an investigation by the state of arizona fishel investigation into that banks mortgage lending practices and they're doing it and that what the bank is trying to do is stop this whole investigation by cutting a deal with the homeowners that have been screwed over in the past and the deal works like this the bank of america will modify the mortgage for any homeowner on the verge of default given lower monthly payments so that they can afford you know two percent forty year cut payments drastically what do they want exchange for that i mean you know sounds like
11:53 pm
a sweet deal right make your home affordable. change business week's this is a quote from business week the borrower this is the this is the document that the bank is having you sign if you want to keep your house right the borrower will remove and delete any on line statements regarding this dispute including without limitation postings on facebook twitter and similar websites and not make any statements the defame disparage or in any way criticize the bank's reputation practices or conduct according to documents filed in state court in phoenix the borrower's name and address were redacted. you get that after there after they screw their customers into an exploding mortgage the bank of america is offering to help out we'll help ya doubt their worry care will extend the term of your lawn all the way out to forty years will take the interest rate down to two percent it's
11:54 pm
going to be easy in your payments are going to be cut dramatically you can afford to stay in your house but only as long as you promise to keep your mouths shut and not talk smack about the bank of america online but the bank of america is trying to do basically is to white watch the internet maybe we the taxpayers should have made a similar deal back in two thousand and eight gab bank of america will give you a forty five billion dollar bailout it should be the second largest corporation in america behind walmart outside of the oil companies of course but in exchange for that you'll have to refinance all our homes let us opt out all those crummy mortgages shoved down our throats or you hustled us into or you didn't even tell people they were eligible for acces be the that they were eligible for good ones. also you have to stop buying and selling dangerous derivatives that ken lay and
11:55 pm
phil gramm helped invent back when phil graham's wife wendy was on the board of enron and caused this crisis in the first place the commodity futures modernization act that led to all these derivatives weird sadik financial instruments that crashed the system no more fine print no more huge overdraft fees to bitch do we have a deal. unfortunately it doesn't work that way in the united states of america because corporations which aren't just people but are super people have far too much power they have the power to silence us and avoid punishment for their crimes you know all the time you hear republicans in the tea party and libertarians say do you really want the government telling us what we can say you are the government telling us what we can do or what we can buy but never is the other half of that question asked which is do you really want transnational corporations like bank of america to be so big that they can tell us what we can say and do i know i'd much
11:56 pm
rather have government telling me what i can do because at least then i have a say i have a vote and i can throw the bums out of office if i don't like what they're doing or try talking to a c.e.o. of a major corporation tried telling the bank of america's c.e.o. that you want him to refinance your mortgage try going to corporate headquarters and protesting against unfair mortgage practices because what'll happen and get arrested corporations have no accountability to the people whereas the government actually does no congressman can punish you for talking smack about him you can even trash him in a t.v. ad the point is this is just the latest example of the challengeable power of corporations in america and how they use it to screw we the people over to the point that we're not even allowed to speak the truth but there's a glimmer of hope here corporations like the bank of america know that their grip
11:57 pm
on power is slipping they be stupid not to know with all the action on the streets over the last four months the occupy movement and they know that social media is an important tool for organizing the people against corporate power just look at what happened during the arab spring that's why the bank of america is making this ridiculous effort to censor twitter and facebook it's a sign of fear of weakness and it's a sign that what we the people have been doing been doing for the last few months is working. so let's keep it up go to move to amend or get involved as the big picture for tonight for more information on the stories we covered visit our website to tom hartman dot com free speech dot org and our team dot com also check out our two youtube channels or a link to tom harkin dot com terry show is also available as a free video podcast on i tunes and we have a free thom hartmann i phone and i pad app at the app store he said his feedback at twitter at tom underscore arbonne on facebook at tom underscore our our blogs message boards the telephone comment line at tom r. . and don't forget democracy begins when you show up and you say i'm going to

no go notion russia rejects a new u.n. resolution on syria saying it's unacceptable and do nothing towards ending the bloodshed. thousands of angry protesters in warsaw cry out against an international online piracy act they make it targets the basic rights of internet users. plus the e.u. takes yet another pounding this time with credit rating fitch downgrading five more european nations even as its leaders to sooth concerns as well the moment for a new.
12:01 am
deal with r t r very warm welcome to today russia as opposed to a new arab european draft resolution on syria. it saying it can't be used as a basis for resolving the crisis become trees ambassador to the u.n. says moscow will carry on searching for ways to end violence there. has been following the latest meeting at the u.n. security council in new york. there has been a lot of discussion taking place primarily because a european arab draft resolution was circulated to the u.n. security council members in which it calls for the syrian president bashar al assad to transfer power to his deputy while a unity government is formed and prepared for new elections cording to reports his draft text calls for
12:02 am
a political transition in syria it also says the security council could quote adopt further measures if syria does not comply with the terms of the resolution now of course this is just a draft text that was written up by france and britain in consultation with morocco germany portugal the united states and qatar this is a draft that is just beginning to be discussed by the security council members we do know that the russian ambassador to the united nations vitaly churkin expressed . deep disappointment with the draft indicating that he does not believe that the international community should impose an outside solution on syria in terms of the conflict taking place there and he also rejected the idea of an arms embargo or the use of force being imposed on syria because we should keep in mind
12:03 am
that if this text includes that the security council could adopt further measures if syria does not comply with what the security council wants we don't know what those further measures could be you have countries such as russia china india brazil that believe that there is a conflict that two sides are involved in syria and both of those parties should be addressed now russia has drafted resolution on syria but i. according to reports and according to what members told me it does not include the cohesive or punitive measures against syria that western countries are looking for the russian draft hold both parties accountable it doesn't call for any type of regime change and that is something that russia and china we saw three months ago vetoed a western draft resolution that could impose possibly regime change in syria and
12:04 am
that's where you have a difference of opinions but this story will continue next week because from what we're told the security council will meet to discuss the text of this draft resolution but antiwar activist and blogger says the latest resolution circulating at the u.n. security council doesn't uphold the right of the syrian people to choose their own leadership the point of departure between the western interests and russia and china voiced by russia this. is whether or not the decision about who will rule syria is made by the syrian people or by nato as it was in libya today again they indicated that they would not allow a resolution to go through that called for regime change in syria without the participation of the syrian people the thing that the western powers want to see in this region is discord they obviously cannot occupy these territories after they
12:05 am
conquer them if you look to iraq and afghanistan you can see that that's the case but as long as the people on the ground are busy killing each other the united states can secure oil or in the case of syria for example the port at tartus which would keep russia out of the mediterranean and whatever other objectives they have . well there are alarming reports from syria with opposition activists claiming that more than sixty people have been killed in the latest outbreak of violence that's against the backdrop of the reported advance of armed syrian regime fighters toward the capital damascus while some see it as a sign of the variation others first discovered remain unconvinced. a clear message from the protesters in this damascus as a funeral takes place. we don't want killing we don't want to. see. children killing we don't read them we don't we we are all to.

live. in this this is going to be all come to us for now they feel safety is being provided by the free syrian army the guerilla body made up of many army defectors who say its presence here has enabled protests like these to go ahead. ever since the military cannot come in anymore because the free syrian army is protecting us we support the free syrian army and we support. the former army colonel heads the f.s.a. from the brute he's been steadfast from the start and his calls the foreign military intervention. say far voided partnerships with any other opposition elements he sees defense significant inside the country and the national coordination council one of the leading opposition groups remains adamant that foreign military intervention would make an already to tear erasing situation even worse whole while the security position has caused some areas to get out of control
12:07 am
of seems that there is a war between two groups outside the country and it's the syrian national council pitching itself as the main opposition but it has failed to unify the many different opposition factions and it's like of unity has hampered the quoting coups for direct u.n. involvement russia and china remain firmly opposed to a resolution that would leave the door open to foreign military intervention and in a far cry from previous coups that dialogue qatar and saudi arabia now talk to the opposition this fit cost even more lives the same and he mislead to find her. groups you have to work with the other side working with the other side look. the f.s.a. say they have little choice but to use weaponry to protect civilians. who have this mean square here in town where people come out and protest. security forces try to

come in but we protect them but this is what's happening here but it remains a precarious situation in a moment of confusion the crowd gets nervous and starts to run at one point gunshots still says where they come from. oh you can save a lot of confusion here on this face even if you are reading in a different direction not exactly sure what's going on that's really not a safe situation to bear right now and all of this happening just fifteen minutes from the city center is just a day before it's major pro-government demonstrations so position can show continues to gain ground the divisions within the country have never been clearer. to god. god yeah. coming up in the program when pressure from the west but far as iran is set to hold

poland minus fifteen degrees centigrade is definitely not an excuse for thousands who gathered in central warsaw friday common it's a week of numerous mass rallies across the world with people protesting against internet censorship actor may have a positive aim to protect intellectual property but these protesters fear it will be used to police the web and take harmless websites offline. engineer martin says his work is under threat because of actors obscurity with the international pact worked out in complete secrecy issues with. first of all. the. possibility of legally censoring information the government. is very unclear the negotiations have lost since two thousand and four and nobody's been anything unlike the week's massive anti active
12:11 am
protests in poland friday's showdown had a clear political overtones while the majority of the crowd was voicing no to the treaty a large chunk was directing their anger at the government and experts saying the scale of public dissent has managed to make war soldiers ruling elite nervous the government was promoting itself as being modern as being people probably internet and people trying to keep them accountable so when they discover that the government is supporting something reactor it was purely political answer to no we don't believe this but this considers the harm governments are pretty nice in these steadily scenes they are. point of view or order a tactic and the and know that they might not ratify act and they will have a second fault so after a week of ignorance i think suddenly they realize that the protests are much deeper much broader and. to become law in poland actor needs the approval of both the polish and european parliament nobody knows for sure how long this might take but

program think the real unwritten objective here is quite frankly in a column by different name but it's regime change ultimately they want to put as much pressure that as they can on this government. well coming up a little later in the program we hear from the people on the streets of new york. do you think most people are willing to change their behavior even though they believe it's a proud new calling selfish if you know they don't really care about the planet until until it affects them personally are americans ready to sacrifice their daily routines in the name of the environment for those who don't change their home. bureau is still taking a hammering fitch one of the big three credit ratings has announced five more downgrades for european economies but as leaders struggle to soothe nerves on another front the debt crisis ravaging the currency to top billing at the annual world economic forum in davos well she's in this to has moved us from that we're

going in today for a davos at the world economic forum and today we'll hear from a number of economists and kind of thinkers about where the global economy is headed we'll have to see how much attention the eurozone captures though because it really has overshadowed a lot of other things that happened on the official and unofficial agenda here at davos we heard from a number of euro zone finance ministers and e.u. officials speaking with a lot of optimism about solutions saying they believe the fiscal compact will be reached with tighter fiscal discipline in that this will really help the debt crisis that the eurozone is dealing with they also said that greek bond holders will come to an agreement on haircuts for greek debt by this weekend to hopefully presumably avoid default which is definitely not a certain thing at all and that d.-day for greece is march twentieth after that optimism which was kind of the headline coming out of that we hasn't seen fitch the credit ratings agency downgrade five e.u. nations this includes italy and spain which are two of the economies that are very much.
