that's now get the latest from sarah ferguson is in the syrian capital damascus syria why exactly did moscow criticize the suspension of the mission. well the sense really that this decision to hold the mission was going to inflame an already externally volatile situation and unfortunately really today that's exactly what we've seen happen now minister lavrov was speaking on his tour of asia pacific countries and what he said about it was that he didn't really understand why such a useful tool was used in this way and now we've seen the observer mission start and eventually grounds to a halt they never really recovered after that decision last week for the gulf states when they withdrew their monitors now their decision they said was because they felt the mission had failed to hold the syrian government to its pledge to end the violence that was there is a lot of truth and that certainly we've been with the observers for a lot of their excursions they've had many many issues along the way but really
2:01 pm
there is a sense that this was a very essential tool could have done some good and it was a surprising decision that's how the foreign minister described it because at exactly the same time that the gulf states made that decision the decision would also be made to extend the mission so you had the situation occurring we're just at a very very crucial time with the situation in the country rather than making this mission stronger rather than trying to make it more effective you have the goal states withdrawing their monitors now he said that that aroused questions and certainly here in syria it did as well there was really a sense that this was a bit of a foregone conclusion and now was interesting was when that decision was made for the gulf states to withdraw that one it is one of the of those sides i was speaking to had hinted that perhaps the rest of them would would follow in its things really now with them having their mission hold to that this is possibly what's going to
2:02 pm
happen we've got the meeting coming up on cheese day where the arab league are going to be presenting. the findings essentially briefing the u.n. and most gays maimed remain. very very adamant that it's not going to back any plan that's going to leave the door wakeman to foreign military intervention in fact again their response to western cool's now that is said that it's impossible to hold dialogue with the regime here the foreign minister called very irresponsible and indeed unforgivable as i think there's a real sense that this arab league with the want to put unity ready to perceive the resolution to dialogue and to try and calm a six can we leave all this whole situation and that of course has been stuck say i really no good developments from here in syria at the moment you know very damascus or just how bad is the situation in the country right now can you give us some sort of indication of what you know. well i mean it's shocking really to see how much
2:03 pm
the situation is escalating day by day we visited one of the suburbs the other day an area where the free syrian army has control you've really seen this conflict creeping towards the capital there was a real concern that this was going to escalate now that the observer mission had been stopped and that's exactly what we've seen happening this morning people in damascus who waking up to the sound of gunfire from these suburbs it seems clashes have broken out in many many of those areas i was speaking to someone today a political writer here in the country he's well oppressed of the. developments in these areas now i mean the suburbs around here you've got harassed the you've got to you know you've got are being all these areas around the capital that have seen increasing conflict and today you know that there were really serious reports about the violence happening in those areas and very very concerning because the area where way west bank but you've got a huge number of civilian people still on the ground that he's lives and i'm very
2:04 pm
very serious danger with this ice skating situation so that is extremely concerning and i mean you can see the developments here on the ground we try to go towards the job lead today which is one of the suburbs where there was reports of conflict in the roads have been closed the military divesting the traffic so all of this extremely concerning and really this is just emphasizes the real need now to find some form of solution and the arab league of course as we said that they're now sitting essentially in that hotel is not going anywhere when we spoke to them they're not exactly sure what's going to happen we'll know more later in the week but really i can't emphasize enough just how much of a blow this was to the progress when i came towards finding a solution in this country i mean this arab league mission essentially has turned out to be a down squibb and there's a lot of people here saying what was the point in having them here in the first. if they were going to be made thank them if they were going to try what to add was and
2:05 pm
always essentially we're going to leap the u.n. action anyway sara thanks very much indeed for that update in damascus hottie sara . well political analyst stephen lemmon believes it's not a coincidence that the arab league froze its mission just as the western powers up the calls for foreign involvement oh my goodness that sounds like a no fly zone and different language it was an open sesame to direct intervention meaning war the observers were say into syria you know they picked the wrong man to lead the mission people who sudanese general who. they thought they had the air man in charge who would deliver the goods if you instead aside believing him for everything going on what a general we do he said assad is cooperating it's exactly the opposite of what the last one they wanted a pretext to step up whatever they have in mind which is some kind of intervention
2:06 pm
the best solution is the worst syria's civil it's only the syrians here is a legitimate opposition in syria syria is that authoritarian state a reporter in the when they've got a young group or did we get to go get a national poll that apparently go some credibility so that the jari of syrians aside for america and britain and the arab league and theirs to intervene in syria used spears and to have an arrogant resolution saying and all the power to it yet be unique in two weeks well assad absolutely should in diplomatic way which told these people to to go. in a spiral of violence than libya is not far behind coming up here in r.t. months after the fall of gadhafi respected geo doctors without borders suspends its mission to libya after being forced to treat torture victims who were then sent straight bat for further interrogation. that's still to come for you here on r.t.

in the meantime un nuclear inspectors have started a three day mission to examine iran's atomic activities to run says it's certain the talks the first in more than three years will prove its programs purpose is purely peaceful the i.a.e.a. visit comes at a time when tensions between iran and the west are approaching crisis level on monday e.u. nations adopted an unprecedented set of sanctions against the islamic republic which include a complete embargo on oil supplies from iran professor marandi from the university of tehran says the fact that the ban was approved just before the agency visit shows talks are unlikely to change the west's approach to iran. the a currently has full time monitors in iran and this is something that we rarely hear in the western media and we have cameras in all of iran installations so therefore there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that iran's nuclear program is anything
2:08 pm
but peaceful and. has no evidence on this the iranians are not very optimistic about the i a because it is heavily influenced by western countries it's not a democratic body most of the members on the board are european and north american they don't represent the international community at all and the head of b i a is he owes his job to the united states if you look at the wiki leaks documents but again the iranians are attempting to resolve the issue despite the fact that in the past when the iranians had attempted to put. the issue front to negotiate and resolve the americans blocked it such as the tehran declaration between brazil iraq and turkey and more recently the russian step for step by step proposal that the west hasn't hasn't been supporting me to run is preparing response to the e.u. involved it raining lawmakers are considering an immediate halt of oil sales to europe . and activists from the campaign against sanctions and military intervention in
2:09 pm
iran says the measure shows tehran is powerful enough not to succumb to economic pressure. the grace period that the vision for six months for it is going to take place may actually not be that graceful so iran is taking matters into his own hand and the other issue is that it shows a complex if you are feeling in the midst of politics and the power that the iranian parliament holds and that is accountable to its people and it's not going to just sit back and watch what's going to happen to the national sovereignty off after iraq the nuclear issues really an excuse for deepening the confrontation between iran and the list actually at the same time that is imposing does involve those on iran if you see that some european countries are selling more arms to the countries after the arab countries of the persian gulf so they are benefiting from the iran the phobia vistar creating in the region so why solve the problem with

2:11 pm
people strong ultimately what the goal was for this demonstration is for protesters to take over and abandoned building where they wanted to create their new headquarters because as our viewers may remember crossed the country in the united states just a few months ago police departments are removed activists from their camps and this was an attempt for oakland optimistic to set up a new headquarters but as the crowd grew stronger and larger of then chile the police in oakland began firing tear gas and flash grenades at the occupy atlanta this morning to the police they say members of the crowd began throwing things at times at the officers and that is what ultimately triggered this clash between police officers came to occupy an optimist but as high as we know this is not the
2:12 pm
first time we've seen a fierce clash between officers and activists in oakland california back in october there was a least three hundred people arrested and a former u.s. marine by the name scott olsen was left in critical condition with a head injury from being struck in the head by a police tear gas can canister and this is something odd that put a lot of criticism on the police department in oakland california they've been criticized for being very harsh with occupy out. reporter there will for more perspective on saturday's protest in oakland i'm not sure. the international action center well despite all the arrests. calling saturday's demonstration a success. well it's important to recognize that the occupy movement is focusing attention on absolutely abandoned
2:13 pm
unused property at a time when there are millions of people homeless in the u.s. and at a time when the occupy movement has been thrown out of its encampments across the country really internationally coordinated planned so this is another creative tactic by the occupy movement in oakland to take abandoned unused convention center space and have a new center for the occupy movement in oakland but what about i want to hear. what i say are what about those people who broke into oakland city hall that certainly isn't about the building they are we saw reports of them smashing glass pictures burning an american flag shortly violence and destruction actually undermines the cause doesn't it. overwhelmingly the occupy movement has been talking about property versus people and the police talk about
2:14 pm
protecting property private property for the one percent and not the people's needs so there's great anger at city institutions that are enforcing and protecting and bringing forth the police against the occupy movement now all across the country there have been now for for months and months and months we've seen a very powerful six months now a very powerful movement very strongly coming out again and again in organized protests young people asserting their needs the needs of the ninety nine percent against the one percent and again and again the media tries to bait this occupy movement as being violent the violence has come from the police and a broken piece of glass is not the broken heads that the police are inflicting on the occupy movement so those who are burning the american flag for example pursuing
2:15 pm
other violent means would you say they are actually even representing the majority of occupy protesters are all they actually are a small group of radicals. well there are many many different forces in the occupy movement and the unity is very important i think it's important to look at the entire occupy movement the very courageous actions that it's taken the action in oakland yesterday against the abandoned convention center that's really the essence of the occupy movement it's also a movement that does represent many different currents they'll be militant actions within it will be educational actions within it there are mass marches within it and all of that is a challenge to the one percent who rule this country and also rule the world that us. is what's responsible for bombing countries around the world for military
2:16 pm
occupations for drone attacks and assassinations so there's a lot of rage also against what the flag stands for globally and what it stands for in the u.s. which is not representing the people's needs right here today i'm not going to really have to say represents rage also frustration because many would say wall street movement really isn't achieving its goals really those who should be listening listening what's its future. briefly well it's very much achieving its goals in terms of waking up the youth in the us waking up working people in the us to the reality the reality that poor and working people are losing more and more and that the one percent actually one thousands of one percent is gaining a normal new wealth so that they are very successful in drawing attention to that despite

deadly clashes between fighters belonging to libya's interim government and soldiers a lot of the slain colonel gadhafi in bani walid this week spot fears of a new civil war the national transitional council reportedly began amassing forces including truck mounted and aircraft weapons near the former stronghold of the gadhafi regime the build up came after government troops were forced out of the restive town the unrest mirrors the growing frustration in libya many people accuse the n.t.s.c. of incompetence and violent power struggles between former rebels chandan a spokesman for british civilians for peace in libya explains why the council is failing to unite the country the gadhafi regime could control the whole of libya could find peace amongst all the tribes the new regime cannot even control something in one town or one area i mean they've turned libya into

a war and of the hunting of black skins they have they're selling off their oil and natural resources and sovereignty to nato and now the thieves that is the rebels they're all falling out with each other so really this is the chief of freedom and democracy by nato it's all become very clear people of syria and the people of lebanon and the people of the global south have to see about what's happening in libya is coming to them if they're not able to defend themselves and stop this rolling western aggression against other countries in the global south. libya's interim leadership also came under fire from the u.n. this week over a failure to stop the torture of thousands of prisoners to international organizations doctors without borders and amnesty international say detainees have been tortured and killed in recent months they also point to widespread abuse of former gadhafi supporters and as if an ocean reports hopes are fading that the nato backed government can actually offer a new beginning. doctors without borders known for going do their job in the most dangerous and notorious places around the globe but an end to see run libya the
