4:48 pm
the most sincere place in st obviously what we have when people have been dating the future of capitalism and you're having it everywhere in the financial plans to the moment it was there what they should be discussing guess what type of capitalism are we talking about when you're right it's not the old fashioned industrial capitalism but yeah even when you say finance capitalism which it's evolved into finance carefulness i'm this is a whole family. pension fund capitalism a super sort of military interior alyssum in the air and say you. see no capitalism and the end product of all those it's like a radioactive decay process it resolves into one of the flame and get in age ending up in new feudalism exactly what industrial capitalism was supposed to be twice and and let's talk
4:49 pm
a little bit further about this because it isn't what we're doing capitalism and doesn't capitalism allows to do this we meaning us here doing this show we love to compete we love to put out views that aren't there on the mainstream media capitalism allows us to do that so isn't there a kind of capitalism that doesn't lead to the inequality that we see today because in the fifty's and sixty's there was capitalism that we had a much more equal society. well sugarcoat it by a group date of destruction and his idea was that capitalism would have a kind of competition among the needs to increase productivity so lowering costs undersell work and that it was and asked the productivity gains on to their customers in the form of lower prices what you have now is a competition among financial getting sort of this you can come in and the most financial charge it's still giving them is that so they don't rate industry. by making loans in the form of i mean with junk bonds in loans to work great moves it
4:50 pm
will then you can sell stock options you work with earnings not to invest in new plant and especially not long term which which is the phone are up until you hear things to buy their own style or simply depending on the dividends to raise the price and thereby raise the price at the stock options so you have financed capitalism and still the cost of doing business that's the cost of living whereas industrial capitalism was supposed to lower the cost but what it is so you have are what people think of is and let's look at the lesson turned upside down and how do we change this we don't have a lot of time obviously that's a big question but just to give one example of what i think is a problem you know you have area and a half in ten who i watched in an interview over the weekend talking about how we need moral capitalism men and how she keeps her up at night and she's thinking about this during the day and you know more fair system and yet her writers boycotted first seven months a couple of guilds in unions because she capitalizes on labor that she doesn't pay
4:51 pm
for he doesn't pay some of her writers so this kind of hypocrisy how do we ever really talk about the real problems well i only have mistrust up politicians who talk about morality children like to talk about morality and rick santorum the more all of it is usually the people who. are the sleazeballs of the legal system that talked about morality hoping that people are going to look at their words not . really doing for their own can get to do so is what the problem is to put in place a system where people do the right thing by serving their own interests then now the system of the regulatory system a legal system a people for going to the getting more oil and more of these become self just not the way to promote society as people expected it to be back when economics was political autonomy or borrow philosophy that's a really interesting point
4:52 pm
a great one to wrap up on we really appreciate your analysis as always a nice breath of fresh air after listening to mainstream economists all last week and davos i really appreciate it as always dr michael hudson. all right so now that i'm back from davos i just want to say first thank you so much to our viewers and to the twitter community and to guests like jim rickards and ed harris and max kaiser and stacy herbert who were so super supportive of the coverage and my trials and tribulations at the world economic forum now if you watched our show or read my tweets you know about the experience but this was my
4:53 pm
first davos so i did want to kind of debrief you on my biggest takeaways on a personal level now before this i had only really read about davos and learned about it from a chapter about davos in superclass which is a really great book by david rothkopf which jim records actually recommended to me which gave this really good kind of insider e. account so i don't know what i was expecting but i think davos is probably completely different based on who you are and what bad you have been so i can really only speak for myself i'm not trying to characterize the whole thing i'm not trying to paint with a broad brush i just want to give you my personal account of my impressions but some people view this as a leaders meeting the haves all getting together while the have nots are locked out a conversation that's really had a lot this year because of the whole occupy movement and the demands for democratization but what about the have nots that are allowed inside there is this whole hierarchy with in davos it feels like and we've heard the stories of the badges i know it's kind of been believer but you definitely feel that with in davos
4:54 pm
with the attendees and the press there is this whole hierarchy ok this i want to burn everywhere you go you have to scan this. this is what security guards see and tell you you can't go there this is what participants see and go i don't want to talk to you you scan it and you get rejected if it's not open if you're not allowed to access that area and your access is pretty limited somebody you think wrote that this is like high school but in high school i didn't need a bad to be considered a cool kid i had no. nothing that whatever that took care of itself anyway if you're a billionaire i'm sure you're rich enough that you're doing your own thing you don't care because you're a billionaire and if you're a businessman judging by the ones i talk to you're mostly concerned with doing business networking but i just got the feeling with with some of these people with the feeling of the group that some are just dads old by the access and the rubbing
4:55 pm
elbows with some of these people and it really makes you realize where the herd mentality and the obsession with the establishment comes from and the desire for acceptance that part is like high school it made me think of some of the things that guess like reggie middleton and others talk about with their herd mentality and why people missed the crash as a result of it back in two thousand and eight and with some of the financial issues facing the country in the world today you know i had a friend that used to work for the obama administration and said that he seen grown men cry over riding on air force one and i got the feeling that the same kind of thing might upset some of the people at davos now some of the most interesting conversations i had were actually about where they were substantial and about economic problems that went on a deeper level what was when i was speaking with the occupiers who actually wanted to talk about economics and were seriously questioning the way things are or someone for example who works for world economic forum but is in banking and we had
4:56 pm
a very content candid conversation about the problems with the banking system and the press team were the coolest most down to earth people at davos they were the best now there's so much going on there you really can't catch everything and there were sessions i couldn't even access or couldn't attend but most of what i heard was the same kind of establishment stuff nothing particularly contrarian or alternative yes inequality was on the agenda but golden from oxford university summed it up pretty well when i talked to him he's been going to davos for fifteen years and said even though it's grown at the end of the day davos over. resents the business elite and people are concerned about inequality yes because yes there is some common humanity but you can only go too far with that that at the end of the day it's about self-interest people are worried about higher taxes and populist movements bringing governments to power that aren't big fans of the rich and most of the people i spoke to were panicking over the economic issues we face and after
4:57 pm
a few days i was like get me out of here i don't want to get stockholm syndrome so personal feeling as long as these people are the people in charge i don't have a lot of faith that much is going to change i think people see things relative to their situation and when you're flying into davos in a private jet and partying with prime ministers and c.e.o.'s you're a little out of touch with most of everybody else and if you're trying to hang out and run with the cool kids who are riding in their private jets then that's probably problematic too as far as really understanding the situation for most people and on a personal level i really don't think i ever need to go back until i get a white bads and p.s. a lot of people that tweeted me were very interested in the height of people and there was a picture tweeted with with geithner and christine legarde saying you know how short really is geithner i didn't see him but i do have to say that i did see christine legarde walk right past me and have air kisses with the chairman of society general and she is very tall so there is a possibility that she may be working tim geithner simply because she's so tall all

with max concert for a no holds barred look at the global financial headlines tune into cons a report on our. horrifying sights and sounds from but altogether a familiar scene that coming out of oakland california rockabye wall street protesters are fighting with police yet again hundreds of arrests and dozens of injuries so what's really under attack here the occupy movement or the free to. of assembly. of the. real you. design your version. and when protesters on the only ones pushing back it's d.-day for occupy d.c. members and the national park service is serving up one eviction notice after another we'll bring you the latest from both states. and one day away from the
5:01 pm
florida primary and conservative critics critics are cracking down they say ron paul is causing a split in the republican party and they're calling for an end to his campaign immediately but when all is said and done who's got a bigger piece of the g.o.p. pie we'll explore. it's monday january thirtieth five pm in washington d.c. i'm christine for you watching r t r let's start off today with the major new developments in the occupy wall street movement as we speak the longest standing occupy camp the one right here in d.c. literally a few blocks away from our studios here is in the process of being dismantled at least in part the u.s. park police chose today to begin enforcing an overnight camping ban in macpherson square it went into effect at noon and protesters were told to remove all signs of
5:02 pm
camping here's what it looks like there just a short time ago. we know you. never will we understand there have been no arrests today police said they would be enforcing the rules of no bedding or camping materials the protesters will be able to keep their tents up as long as one sign of what they call temporary structures are kept open at all times as many of those protesters remain as fierce and square they've built what you see here this giant tent over the main statue there also some major activity over the weekend in oakland california where more than four hundred people were arrested apparently it's the largest mass arrest in oakland's history according to police there i think it's important to note occupy oakland seems to use different methods other than the other occupy movements around the country in fact occupy oakland's general assembly actually rejected the policy of peaceful nonviolence choosing instead to use quote a diversity of tactics well we've put together some pictures for it from you from
5:03 pm
over the weekend. now among the activities their protesters use force to try to take over an abandoned community center they were hoping to turn that into headquarters protesters also apparently stormed city hall breaking into the building using a low bar to get through the emergency exit door a little mayor jean klein says protesters trashed much of the bill building vandalized several areas and caused massive damage of protesters also burned an american flag on the front steps of these photos making their way around from the weekend and in response to those arrest occupy movements from around the country marched in solidarity to show their support for occupy oakland arrestees we have got independent journalist lucre down here in studio to talk a little bit more about that in live from what i understand you were just in new york last night at an event that was scheduled to show solidarity with the oakland
5:04 pm
arrestees talk a little bit about that it was definitely a lot different than all the other movements and marches that took place in new york city there was a lot more people dressed up in black as anarchists very crazy hectic night bottles were thrown at police officers there are people in the crowd who are very angry some people being violent i just released the video today on my you tube channel youtube dot com port flash we are change of police officers grab an anarchist letting him go and then watching him the police never let anybody go in new york city especially when they grab them in those kind of situations we caught anarchists attacking a lot of streamers people who were there filming exactly what was happening i actually got a picture of this guy's face i hope people can defy him because as many times you know during major demonstrations in major rallies the police officers like to dress up as anarchists to incite violence because then the police have an excuse to crack down on all the protests so you think that the guy that the protester that they grabbed and then let go they did so because he was one of them process under cover
5:05 pm
i had him under cover cop actually assault me done an occupy wall street couple weeks ago that goes up also on you tube. walk away or run away to other police officers for safety as i filmed them running away so there's undercover police officers especially there i mean the n.y.p.d. has spies in different countries spying on people they spy on colleges they spy on average citizens and for them not to be in the occupy movement is really silly they're in there we know that for a fact we've got video of undercover cops in there you know some interesting numbers came out speaking of this police treatment of reporters of journalist some interesting numbers came out this is by the group reporters without borders every year they compile a list of countries from around the world and they rank them in terms of how journalists are treated by authorities i want to show you these numbers this year than the united states actually moved twenty seven points down largely due to the treatment of journalists covering the occupy movements they're down to number forty seven now luke what is going on here what does this say doesn't surprise me i mean
5:06 pm
the police officers are actin irrational last night actually filmed a police officer that i filmed before and trying to intimidate and harass me he went after one of my camera guys talked him into the floor put him in handcuffs and told them he was going to find twenty ways to arrest him because he was with me and filming everything that was happening we embarrassed officer before and you tube and now it seems like they're acting child loosely sadly but journalists have to shed the light on that too and show people exactly what's happening because the only way to face these problems face journalistic freedom going down is to face it head on and to tell the people and show the world what's happening and speaking of showing the world what's happening out there right now r.t. has several crews at macpherson square and i want to just play a little bit of what's in this protester say some of these voices of people at occupy d.c. right now. this here in the fearsome square is a symbolic protest and we're dreaming of a better world and by not letting us sleep they're not letting us dream but feel
5:07 pm
but given the media presence we're not going to see a strong police force me to go camping regulation until there is a dispersal of the media i think we're going to sit comfortably here until it gets dark. at a certain point we're going to see the cameras turn off or we see the police come in. very sweet or discussion you in all the media outlets possible but if you go back to the he's the leader and organize. and be the change they want to see. and. all of these movements all over the country talk about what you've seen recently a d.c. i'm not sure if you were here today or not i well i just got here because i heard that there's going to be a possible vixen and a lot of times when the mainstream media leaves or gets kicked out in new york city the police officers were going after journalist with n.y.p.d. press passes and telling them they're going to lose their job they're going to lose their passes if they're not there but i'm there just like all their life streamers
5:08 pm
they're trying to stream exactly what's happening to the world to show them because when it's past midnight and the police officers come in like they usually do when they lie when they said they were going to come in at twelve today they're not they usually wait until everybody leaves so there's no attention so i'm going to be out there i hope other people also are going to be out there we're going to stream video record everything because it's all about transparency and openness and that's what the movement follows and that's what life is all about i think when you talk about some of the specifics of this ordinance that they want to. you know what into place and force down there has to do with camping and sleeping a lot of people are usually awake during the daylight hours so i think it's going to you're going to be there and show that i know that yesterday park police started to put up notices talking about the fact they were going to enforce these rules and i want to show you what happened when one of the protesters there took down these notices. so.
5:09 pm
you see that protester they're being chased by pulling. being detained as you see right here he was just taints falls to the ground in a way it seems to me at least to the pain that protests are then arrested taken into custody. this is it this is unique i will say for d.c. you don't see a lot of this type of action this is blocks away from the white house the police here it's national park police they're certainly not using batons not using pepper spray this is unique but. you know what's the word on the street how are people responding to this type of thing happening here i mean obviously there's a lot of anger towards the police department in the park department for doing this i do personally believe the teaser was excessive but he was resisting arrest. people are not taking it well and there's a lot of people trying to maintain that message of nonviolence but when incidents like this happen people who call for violence are heard more but i really hope that
5:10 pm
this doesn't happen because the more they attack goes the more reproving right especially in the occupy wall street movement and once you stand there and don't become like your enemy and don't fight back that's when people see that you're right and i hope people understand that i hope people follow that principle of nonviolence and continue that as an independent journalist i'm trying to remember luke we've been talking to you since this all started back on september seventeenth how have you been arrested covered trying to cover the story i've been be in baton pepper sprayed had a horse step on me but i actually was never arrested detained many times by police officers but i was out there with the camera and always make sure to get out of there so people could see the video certainly interesting and i think there's going to be a lot more to come that we see both here in our own backyard in d.c. and across the country new york oakland a lot of actions continue to be planned for this movement we do appreciate you covering this throwing it up on the web wanting us use your video at times independent journalist ski here in studio with us if you haven't. also ahead here
5:11 pm
on our team in the republican primaries it's a race to the finish just as soon as ron paul is getting a comfortable pace some critics are trying to trip up his campaign so could this split the g.o.p. cause a major cause a major world walk on the road to the white house that story next. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through it's already been made can you trust no one. is your view of the global reach and where we had a state controlled capital score fashion when nobody dares to ask we do our t. question more.
5:12 pm
welcome to the capital account i'm lauren lyster. all right so tomorrow is the florida primaries and as usually happens in presidential primaries votes for one candidate are votes that of course don't go to the other candidates and some conservatives say they've had enough and they've launched a petition to try to steer support away from ron paul now included in it the quote the time has come for true conservatives to rise up and take a stand they call those who support wrong call ron paul quote radical leftists and it also says the real conservatives of the republican party here by demand that wrong paul and his presidential campaign at once and accept the g.o.p. all along with his radical cult followers and supporters. i don't know about you
5:13 pm
but the supporters i've seen of ron paul they don't seem like the type of people to pay any attention to these this someone threatening language so i did talk to somebody somebody deeply involved in all of this her name is mary wilson she's a ron paul supporter herself and here's her take. we're getting pretty tired of that kind of language but we're happy that he hasn't really answered the question but we don't think that he will run a third party ticket and the ron paul supporters are not going away there's no way that their vote is going to any other candidate and the g.o.p. needs us they need our vote so we're getting loud and we're getting organized and we're explaining and telling everyone that you know our vote is not for sale it's not going to go to any other of the candidates so if they want to try to run him out of this race and put him on to a third party ticket it's only going to backfire in their faces because we will write him in and you say mary that you're getting loud you're getting organized i
5:14 pm
mean from what i've seen not just in this time around but back in two thousand and even now secretary of state hillary clinton says when she was running for president she would show up to events and the ron paul supporters were always loud and were always organized their numbers might not be as strong as some of the other candidates but i want to point something out something really really interesting people keep saying you know ron paul hasn't won any primaries yet but the supporters he has are not only loyal many of them are you know one of the target demographics they are young people i want you to take a look at some of these numbers from new hampshire. when you look at voters between one thousand and twenty nine years old ron paul in new hampshire got almost half the vote forty six percent apparently in iowa it was very very similar ron paul got about forty eight percent of the young vote so talk to me mary i why do you think ron paul resonates i mean he's the oldest candidate running and yet resonates so much with young people. i think that the young people are more connected to the
5:15 pm
internet and doing their own research having more of an understanding about the direction that the country is going in which the current leadership and the other options that were being given or told to go for are not any different than obama so we've done our research we understand what is fractional reserve banking we understand what is happening to our currency so long as you know they're allowed to print trillions of dollars and inflate the prices of you know all of the goods and food and everything else that we need to survive and you know we're looking at this for the long term and i think some some people at the elderly or middle age or something or they're getting their information from the mainstream media and they're not looking at things from all sides so i love you guys a station i i watch russia today it's my favorite but i also watch nine probably nine different international news networks to get my information and that is what
5:16 pm
the young people do and you know we are energized about this because it's a it's a dream it's a it's not it's an idea it's not just ron paul it's an idea and you know right now a lot of people think that the government needs to take care of us so that we need the government to take care of us but people who believe in themselves and believe in this idea believe that we can make a difference so you know what we're excited that once ron paul gets into the presidency that you know we can also make a difference in our community as well focusing on that why do you appreciate your kind words about our team mary and i think it's really interesting and important that you mention a lot of young people are very internet savvy from what i understand it ron paul has more has been mentioned more in sort of facebook updates and shared articles than any of the other candidates so you really have a look of that in action how much the young people you. also said though your your vote is not for sale so even if ron paul stays in this through august which many
5:17 pm
believe he may a lot of people are starting to talk about how to treat ron paul supporters we saw on one side that petition people very angry at people like you but i know even former g.e. c.e.o. jack welch says you know we've got to be nice we've got a p considerate to ron paul supporters what is your message for those who may be courting your vote in the future i mean is do you most ron paul supporters say we either vote for ron paul or no one or you know is there talk of who to back as a second choice. there's no second choice for ron paul supporters you will never hear of a former ron paul supporter anybody who hears the message and does some research and understands it pours their heart into it and it stirs up a passion and we're growing and you know i'm a member of an activist group here where we're organizing to win california for ron paul and we know that.
