climate change takes millions of years but all steps of change are right in front of our eyes. it was plowed in the one nine hundred sixty s. . they planted corn. but it didn't work out and it ruined the steps of the. very hydrophilic they drew out all the water and left small sand junes in its wake could be. throughout history the cow mix of lived as a nomadic tribe of herders that lived in harmony with nature breeding horses camels and even a special breed of cow make sheep these sheep were perfectly suited to life in the desert they were grazing did no permanent damage to the grass as hitler's army approached the volga during world war two counted sheep herds were taken to kazakstan as a result the county kurds had to be restored with a different breed after the war. battle belying is a long time sheep herder and is very familiar with another factor that is causing

the desert if occasion of can make it. one of the fine fleece merino breeds came from grozny. unfortunately that breed ended up replacing the culm it breeds and we ended up with over three million in grozny sheep even a. couple of cup with its got very small shop who they damage the ground to argue with. bad choices in crop planting intense cattle pasturing and unfavorable weather conditions of all brought about an ecological catastrophe these daily winds that blow over county contributed to the disaster they carry solid particles of dust and salt from the drying our old sea vast lush pastures have been all that robbed of their moisture. alexanders clad remembers all too well how it started thirty years ago. but i know they're both and

a master plan of countering desert invasion was put together. when an emergency state was introduced in the republic almost all farmers schoolchildren and students were involved in seed collection and subsequent sowing works in the region brochure the results achieved proved that it was possible not only to stop desert invasion but also to bring life back but there were not that but it'll take fifteen to twenty years for this land to become step again. you know we should remember that it's impossible to revive step in its original form on the open sea. but the water goal is not only to reinforce the sandy soil but also to create quality pastures that will foster the development of cattle breeding in kalmykia where. it's a tough task selecting which plants are fit for life in the desert and those that can help turn the desert back into step in the bush is was selected by way of trial
7:51 pm
and error which. was one of the first scientists who proved which plants are most likely to survive here at the cordon just going to be this is a collision and route one of the bushes planted to study this. it would be the roots can grow fifteen to twenty metres deep you know it's a very convenient plant to use because it grows in the sand and doesn't require watering. when you get in the world enough scientists recommend planting cuttings of killing you know much the same way grapes are planted that. we were hesitant at first but it turns out that it grows well after all even on certain people can't help wondering but tell us what's the use of planting sticks but after three months the sticks start to blossom. today residents of the county village of pecans kate will start another round combating

the desert all they have is an old tractor with soviet era of quick mint attached to fight the invading sands the new agricultural technique of planting cuttings with just the working team is composed of three people two technicians who plant the cuttings and an assistant who stamps on the ground around the plants to make it flat but one planting machine can cover up to twelve hectares of sand in a single shift it is hard work especially considering temperatures often reach forty five degrees celsius one hundred thirteen fahrenheit in the shade in the first year the young plants will shoot out a strong and lengthy root system then every bush gradually gains a territory of about thirty square metres all to itself when the sand invasion is stopped the spaces between the bush rows will be filled with grass this is how a former desert is going to become a pasture. there is a great variety of deserts and some of them instead of being a hindrance can be

a natural wonder six thousand kilometers east of moscow in the foothills of the kadar ridge behind lake baikal lies the chara desert it is a unique place siberia. tourists from all over russia visit there even though it's hard to reach the desert is surrounded by rivers and marshes every july it hosts a festival the real. enthusiasts stay away from the proper roads for the trip to the festival location is an adventure in itself some travel across tyga and rivers and trucked off road vehicles others had through the marshes on foot one group of thrill seekers fall by force has chosen an especially difficult route. dimitri balaban of a shy program from kazakhstan is the focus of attention his car is completely unfit

for off road exploits yet he has travelled four thousand kilometers to join the band of adventurous. at u.b.s. i was of course i'd never dared to go to such a place on my own. but going with a group is a different thing. besides the experience guys took a look at the route beforehand and said we should be able to make it only probable . dimitri ran into problems assumes the cars left the highway and the next five hours were very hard however his fellow travellers tell him it's the only way a rally across tigar is a real test but for the driver and for the vehicle. adrenalin is pumping the car is stuck the wheels are spinning and the terrain is getting more and more difficult now the participants will all experience the front shapes of traveling off road through the siberian tiger the crews will help each other out if

not many of these cars will end up abandoned in the swamps forever by the time the convoy rives it is already late but the drivers for go exhaustion and start repairing their vehicles right away are the good with no i probably wouldn't want to come every year. because you need some time off but almost it's a very intense kind of experience. early in the morning while the campus is sleep a leg is son of an experienced hiker well acquainted with the area sets off into the sands his task is to check how safe the route is before the new arrivals hit the road to explore the charred desert the shortcut to the desert goes through a marsh land and a pine forest we're going to explain landing in charge of the flies over the desert . with the passengers are always but will the two actually see sanjay and hear. that legend has it that once there were two brothers younger. and older both were

princes and they lived in peace and harmony really never was me until they came upon a treasure trove of gold they proceeded to divide it mostly but they could never come up with a fair hogs one always ended up shorter than the other and this led to fighting and civil war the gods were greatly displeased with it and turned one prince into the kadar ridge and the other into the old become rich while the gold they were fighting over became a stretch of sand between them and the first groups of tourists are approaching the charas sands. each person has to improvise a way of walking over the difficult terrain where the tiger ends and the desert starts the walk ahead of them is fascinating yet tiring the key to success here is to ignore the burning sun and insect bites of the tiger. there is no complete explanation as to the deserts origin one theory is that it was produced by

centuries of winds eroding the sediment of an ancient lake. the lake dried out about fifteen thousand years ago and its form of bed was walked on by packs of mammoths and woolly rhinoceros tusks keep turning up in the area to this day. landscape is a breathtaking combination of north and south brought together as if by magic. there is no other doesn't like it anywhere else in the world these fabulous sights completed by the impressive skyline of the kadar mountain range the chara desert itself is quite small but just over fifty square kilometers. some members of the talk rupert stayed behind in the count there completing preparations for the relay competition on the festival's program it's going to be tough with over fifty experienced hiker's after the trophy. so that the who naturally our goal in coming

here was not to take some wild rides in off road vehicles or like bonfires balls that are both of quite the opposite. we were trying to appreciate the beauty of the desert as it is then we'd like to make sure it stays this way for times to come that some countries a desert is considered disaster just the char is a place for us to get together and have a good time in a friendly atmosphere. just like today's festival. the relay competition route is set a few kilometers away from the desert the chara desert itself is a protective nature reserve and visitors only allowed on foot this is no place to host a competition but the protection of the law and the deterrent provided by the sounds themselves make sure that this one of a kind natural treasure remains in its original state. in the evening visitors are treated to one last one. the sun setting over

a quiet lake lights up low clouds and fog on the horizon creating an unforgettable beautiful picture. once the sun has set everyone gathers at a large meadow by the lake it is time for the awards ceremony and singing songs by the fire all just for listening to the music of the night forest by the slumbering siberian desert. sure is that so much given to you because it is right on the mark with crude blockade and the turning off of the time as the united states and the e.u. again sanction iran iran is also a threat be imposed. free. education free. free. free free. free.

free. download free blog video for your media project free media are t.v. dot com. images that look like a war zone welcome to battlefield oakland or seems like there's a played out time and time again so where's the love or at least the freedom to assemble. and while oakland protesters stand up to police occupy d.c. members are getting a jolt of reality this time with an eviction notice and while the national park service tells occupiers to get out these protesters say you can't evict an idea we'll bring you the latest. and one day away from the florida primary conservative critics are demanding ron paul step out of the race but with so many youth voters

joining his stride it's a lot easier said than done so are these critics splitting hairs or splitting the party all together. you know that saying it's going to hell in a handbasket well that might not be too far off from the truth for the eurozone and while the euro crisis may be on top of the agenda for world leaders how much is changing. bluster we'll break it all down for us. good evening it's monday january thirtieth eight pm in washington d.c. i'm christine for you watching our team. well to begin tonight it's been one of the longest on q. patients in the occupy wall street movement the one right here in washington d.c. since late september protesters have been camping out in macpherson square and freedom plaza and have for the most part been unbothered by police here the parks
8:02 pm
are patrolled by the national park police who notified protesters the beginning today at noon they started forcing the law that's been in place along the no camping law are to correspondent liz wahl spent much of the day at macpherson's square today to see how everything was shaken up. so we are here at macpherson square where protesters have been occupying the park since october they were out the demonstration about one hundred tents have been pitched here but today park police say they have to go the national park service has repeatedly slapped these notices on tents here macpherson square informing protesters that they can no longer camp out here that means they have to get rid of sleeping bags and any other material which allows them to live here protesters are responding by painting that symbol on the notice which demonstrates the fact that they do not agree with this mandate. the deadline noon today for tens can stay but their doors must remain open
8:03 pm
proving no one is living in it the notice warns protesters that violate the rule are subject to arrest and it's basically a symbol of opposition. to. you what everything that this move is opposing right now and so i think the tents are really important part of occupy but police presence was sparse with no reported arrests they stand mostly on the sidelines refusing to answer questions from the media no reason why but occupiers made their message loud and clear they are not giving up the fight here as you can see protesters have erected a massive shadow over the statue here at macpherson park it's all the demonstrations of the anticipated even action by park oh yes this is our tents of dreams we want to be able to sleep here so we can dream of a better world where everyone has access to health care education housing and where the rich and corporations banks no longer have control over political system the
8:04 pm
federal government and the political leaders and wall street were all tone deaf they could not hear this so the occupy movement has offered them a hearing aid and they're getting our message loud and clear now the purpose of this was to unite us in this space so if they want to arrest one of us after arrest all of us or not of us at all because everybody would get around. i believe so. that was artie's own liz wall now one of the loudest heartbeats of this movement has come from oakland california and if you thought oakland protesters have gone away or that their energy has fizzled out you'd be wrong over the weekend more than four hundred people were arrested as part of various activities including breaking into city hall then the lising city hall and also trying to take over an abandoned community center they had hoped to use as their headquarters here's a look at some video shot in oakland from over the weekend.
8:05 pm
police say that mass arrest was the largest in the city's history when protesters say they'll continue to fight and you may remember it was open where a pair of porch shutdowns were conducted and also were off for a veteran scott olsen was injured a few months back oakland has a long history of being a little more militant than other movements across the country occupy oakland blogger jessica holley joins us now from oakland hey there jessica talk to me about this weekend what you saw and what the discussions been like today. well this week . is really dramatic a normal march as you were what happened in san francisco last weekend but instead there was increased amounts of violence on behalf of the police department and both were really get into it wanted to address something the vacant building that they were trying to take over was the henry j. kaiser center which was
8:06 pm
a big auditorium which. various organizations have used to run it out before so it's been vacant for a very long time it wasn't an actual community center and that the protesters did not break into city hall the doors were open as they normally are around seven eight nine o'clock on a saturday knee oh according to the mayor there she said that a crowbar was used to get into the emergency exit door so obviously just a dispute of sort of yeah it is doing that or ok thanks for thanks for clearing that up so they tried to take over the center that they wanted from what i understand to have their headquarters because the occupy oakland protesters as we know have already been kicked out of their occupation sites is that right. well i mean they've stopped people from having very large umbrellas by creating structure by creating a lot of safe structures and they want to allow tents but there's a twenty four hour seven day a week presence at the original site but then yes people were still trying to get some sort of buildings so that we could have like an inside for rainy days for wet
8:07 pm
weather and specially for the individuals who don't have homes to go to who are surprised trying to how cool from what i understand as occupy oakland is a little bit different from a lot of the other movements because i know the general assembly there actually voted to allow all types of tactics and forms of resistance not just as many other movements have voted on nonviolent ones from what you've observed what's the reason behind this. well first five think it comes down to defining the terms many people say that they're not being violent they're acting in self-defense because the police are unjustly attacking them and so that's where a lot of the indorsement of autonomy's actions comes into where we say we include all tactics because give any in any given situation you may have to defend yourself from being unjustly arrested or beaten and so that in turn would i guess amount to to violence to some people so where they had to make a statement to i don't know be an opposition there what are your take on some
8:08 pm
interesting numbers that came out by the group reporters without borders now every year they compile a list of countries from around the world and rank them in terms of how journalists are treated in those countries. treated by authorities in those countries rather and just come putting these numbers up on the screen this year the united states actually moved down twenty seven points largely due to the treatment of journalists covering the occupy movements the u.s. now number forty seven i want to get your take i mean what do you make of this it seems to me that is a significant drop. i think it's a significant drop and if you ask my opinion after this weekend it should be lower while i was filming the police i'm standing there with my pink hello kitty backpack as usual full of battery packs and i. and i'm streaming and some officers run and pull a rifle shot look and i don't know they train it on a woman who's fallen trying to run from the police and when i'm screaming to please
8:09 pm
not shoot her and they raise the gun at me and i start screaming to please not shoot me i have my press passes on so the police see the entire time everybody's let cameras watching them so when they decide to advance it's not a surprise about the individuals who they are advancing on first which is usually to journalists. so really you've seen first hand the treatment of police not just the sort of violent treatment toward the protestors but also toward members of the press and the media as well most definitely there's actually some you to footage of another journalist who was complying with the oakland police department on january fourth when they were telling him to step back and no matter how far he stepped back or how fast he moved he was still going to be arrested and he was arrested there is actually really it is yes but on you tube a whole lot has come out of this weekend and i think it's really important even the mainstream networks the large networks are showing some of the footage from over the weekend i wanted to ask you i don't know if you know the answer to this there
8:10 pm
was talk that a woman was but tahn or hit hard in the kidney and that she may have been pregnant i don't know if you've heard anything about those of you know of her condition i believe her name is amanda chappell. we've got photos right here of the woman on the stretcher and there's been some talk i know in the last twenty four hours that she was in fact pregnant have you heard anything. you know there have been a lot of facts circulating right now. i've been under by the minute to not just close any further information about that until a little earlier is that ok to not exactly sure. ok it really to comment on an clarify. right occupy oakland blogger jessica holley we do appreciate you giving us the firsthand account of this weekend as you say it was a pretty pretty huge weekend from everything that came out of there ok thank you. now on to the nation's capital where the occupy movement has also been put on
8:11 pm
notice earlier today i spoke to someone who's been following the movement since the start independent journalist nick ridout ski now as i just mentioned a bit earlier i asked both to comment on the u.s. as dramatic drop when it comes to the freedom of the press take a listen doesn't surprise me and the police are acting irrational last night actually filmed a police officer that i filmed before trying to intimidate and harass me he went after one of my camera guys talking to the floor put him in handcuffs and told them he was going to find twenty ways to arrest him because he was with me and filming everything that was happening we embarrassed officer before and you tube and now it seems like they're acting childishly sadly but journalists have to shed the light on that too and show people exactly what's happening because only way to face these problems face journalistic freedom going down is to face it head on and to tell the people and show the world what's happening and speaking of showing the world what's happening i know right now r.t. has several crews at macpherson square and i want to just play
8:12 pm
a little bit of what's in this protester say some of these voices of people at occupy d.c. right now. this macpherson square is a symbolic protest and we're dreaming of a better world and by not letting us sleep they're not letting us dream but feel but given the media presence we're not going to see a strong police force me to go camping regulation until there is a dispersal of the media i think we're going to sit pretty comfortably here until it gets dark. at a certain point we're going to see the cameras turn off or we see the police come in. or discussion. but. he's the leader and organize and. change they want to see. all of these movements all of the country talk about what you've seen recently on d.c. i'm not sure if you were here today or not i well i just got here because i heard
8:13 pm
that there's going to be a possible vixen and a lot of times when the mainstream media leaves or gets kicked out in new york city the police officers were going after journalist with n.y.p.d. press passes and telling them they're going to lose their job they're going to lose their passes if they're not there but i'm there just like all their life streamers and they're trying to stream exactly what's happening to the world to show them because when it's past midnight and the police officers come in like they usually do when they lie when they said they were going to come in at twelve today they're not they usually wait until everybody leaves so there's no attention so i'm going to be out there i hope other people also are going to be out there we're going to stream video record everything because it's all about transparency and openness and that's what the movement follows and that's what life is all about and that was independent journalist. also ahead on our team it's survival of the fittest when it comes to the g.o.p. as primaries heat up ron paul continues to gain steam and many republicans are asking him to call it put the split in the g.o.p.

decisions to break through it's already been made who can you trust no one who is your view with the global machinery see where we had a state controlled capitalism score sessions when nobody dares to ask we do our tea question more. how to nearly twenty debates paris sex scandals and more than half of the candidates already dropping out well tomorrow is the primary election in florida and on the sidelines of the mitt versus newt boxing match over morals money and conservative values is another battle those who are concerned about ron paul now you may be wondering why given that he hasn't yet want to primary and he's polling in a distant fourth place in florida well ron paul supporters are not only loyal many of them also happen to be in a target demographic group they're young take a look at some of these numbers these are out of new hampshire if you look at
8:16 pm
voters between one thousand and twenty nine years old ron paul in new hampshire got nearly half of them forty six percent and apparently it was the same in iowa very similar results from paul got forty eight percent of the young vote there so this is just one of many factors involved in the pot of ingredients we call the fight to become the g.o.p. nominee so to talk more about this ron paul effect earlier i sat down with one of his supporters julie barofsky and she told me why so many young people are following his stride. yet it's kind of strange to see a seventy six year old me and a very conservative very villages get so much support from young people and i think one of the reasons is because ron paul tells it like it is he doesn't sugarcoat things he has a consistent record he is going to do what he says is plan to restore america he wants to cut one trillion dollars in the first year alone he's talking about big ideas and the other candidates are not so you think that something that resonates
8:17 pm
with young people. it's interesting because there seems to be a feeling of being frightened by ron paul so and some of the supporters also so this is what happens in presidential primaries you know votes for one candidate means that those votes don't go to other candidates but some conservatives say they've had enough and i don't know if you've seen this truly but these conservatives have launched a petition to try to steer support away from ron paul want to put it up on the screen and include in this petition quote the time has come for true conservatives to rise up and take a stand and will call those who support ron paul quote radical leftist and says the real conservatives are the party republican party hereby demand that ron paul and his presidential campaign at once and exit the g.o.p. along with his radical cult followers and supporters now i don't know that usually about a lot of the ron paul supporters that i've come into contact with this sort of like threatening language they've also threatened.
