aktion simply vacuum up all the equity and take no risk what does this matter yes i mean clearly these sort of economic systems any time you've seen them when we've discussed previously the examples of egypt and tunisia what they and you know the they come under the pretext of being good for the economy being good for the national greatness of the nation or they always find nice sounding pretext for why these just these interventions into the market economy are justified however the real consequences of it is always that it ends up either benefiting the status quo benefiting the people who are in charge now no this isn't this is the real problem with this is not just that it's not fair the real problem with it is that it's very destructive economically because what it means is that you keep the productive companies and the unproductive firms and industries you keep them alive and they continue to survive sucking up valuable resources that would be used otherwise in society and channeling these resources capital land labor office space computing
10:49 am
power all of that stuff they channel it into unproductive uses of capital and the result of that the product that they produce is something that is obviously not desired by society as evidenced by the fact that they fail on a free market so you by giving corporations the incentive to both be able to make profits and to make losses you give them again the idea of risk reward there is always a risk associated with when you try to make reward so if you take out the punishment if you take out the risk if you take out the possibility of losing from this you're going to end up with corporations that are unproductive and i think this is this is this is really the reason that the economies of the u.s. and britain i would say are stuck in a recession because so much of the productive capital of the country so much of the smart people so much of the office space so much of the computers in the country are being used in unproductive enterprises in unproductive industries and if these industries were allowed to fail. will people in them would move on to other
10:50 am
productive avenues of economic activity and that would be much better for everyone in society right so you end up in britain and in the u.s. with financial dictators and meanwhile the middle east the dictator corporatist like adopt the ben ali and move barack. they've been overthrown more last or in the process of being overthrown are there is this arab spring has been going on so what does this mean for the west of course the dictators in the west who rely on the resources that they were getting from the dictators in the middle east well i think the interesting thing is to see how if you look at a place like egypt right now we're seeing the revolution is continuing in the sort of struggle between the old order the of the remnants of the mubarak regime who are still in power versus the current. the versus the new forces that are being unleashed by the revolution i mean one of the key issues that is being fought over
10:51 am
is the issue of the loan from the eye enough to egypt there's a lot of back and forth between the i.m.f. and different members of the egyptian government about whether those laws are going to take place or not and whether they're going to be provided low interest rates or not and what sort of conditionality is attached to them. a lot of talk about it but sir for yet the egyptian government has not officially taken on those loans what's happening is that the rating of the egyptian government is being downgraded by the rating agencies and the bottling costs of the egyptian government are getting very high so people know we're expecting a fiscal or possibly a monetary crisis in egypt which is you know obviously going to be a very bad thing the unfortunate thing is that this is being used as a justification for rushing through the i.m.f. loan and for getting into even more debt than other people looking at it logically and saying this road of spending and borrowing has brought us to the brink of disaster and we should just quit this idea of the. to think that we could borrow
10:52 am
from outside in order to build our country it has not worked for thirty years almost in which mubarak has been in power it has only served to enrich mubarak and his cronies and it is not brought development of the country all that it has done is increase the indebtedness of the country and make people liable for paying more and more and more of their income towards taxes to go towards paying off interest on that and i think egypt needs to make a clean break with the past with these policies of the mubarak era from the respect of particularly by making a statement on the debt. letting the for industry be basically repudiated and mubarak should be made liable for it and the domestic that they need to reach a sort of agreement with the domestic creditors that you know save the save the banking system advance it from a collapse by recapitalizing the banks in case they have a problem with the liquidity because of the treasuries and then after that they must have a balanced budget there is no alternative to fiscal responsibility as you look at
10:53 am
europe and what is happening in europe or in the us or in arab countries there is really is no alternative for as an individual or as a country there's no alternative to being fiscally responsible so the path through it is to eliminate interest payments as a massive part of the budget and reformulate the budget in a way that doesn't hurt the poor and in a way that stops giving favors to the connected people from the regime and as a result leaves the budget being able to be balanced without having to resort to foreign borrowing because this is really the main problem if you get involved in foreign borrowing it leads to puppet regimes that don't have that intimacy in front of their people as mubarak and the not his regime are and it also leads to a massive giant drag on the economy as people continue to generate more and more and more money that goes simply towards paying off taxes to go towards paying off interest on the debt right mubarak is gone but now it's time to overthrow the real dictator that being of course the i.m.f. now we've had the arab spring. and then we found the occupy wall street movement
10:54 am
now a new movement is taking shape around the world these are up protestors who are protesting again so people either stop on line piracy act and related intellectual property laws that are attacking the internet from the corporate side the core protest want total control of the internet and is that a fair statement are is this a case of the corporate test who are attacking the innovators the entrepreneurs and the free marketeers do you see this playing out as as an extension really of this global insurrection absolutely i think it's seeing with the internet is very interesting because as markets in the real world continue to be strangled and controlled more and more by the managerial state by governments all over the world the internet is really the place where the market where the free market has gone because in the internet you can click anywhere you want and you can design to use any website you want and people have the freedom of choice and because they have the freedom of choice and their choices aren't and forced upon them upon which was
10:55 am
so they should read which website is used for their e-mail they end up making choices on the providers of these services that are for i would argue better than what would happen if you had a central planner trying to dictate this to them under the pretext of some of the usual corporatist excuses so because the internet is a wonderful place where you can exchange all this information very freely it leads to good information marketplace as well as a good example of a proper marketplace what we're seeing with soap and people is just a very strong attempt to try and bring in the power of the state from the real world onto the internet and so now the failure and success of websites will not depend about whether on whether people want to click on them if people want to use them but the failure will depend on what some particular bureaucrat decides in some position of authority in the government so this of course it would be very dangerous you know from the phone from the perspective of the freedom of information because what it does is it leaves the knowledge of the information that is available for members of society to be decided by. particular people who get to
10:56 am
know everything and then decide what you should be able to know the optimistic thing about it is that the internet is just it's a very resilient thing and it's really hard to clamp down on international connectivity and you know it was very encouraging what happened with this. with people. in terms of actually. alerting a lot of people to the reality of the problems of the intellectual property paradigm it's the problem is much deeper than just these two acts which are probably going to die in congress now the problem really is in state and fortunes of intellectual property which serves in a very pernicious way it harms most the artists who produce the art or the authors who publish the books as well as the then the fans or the readers who want to consume this material neither of them really benefits from intellectual property laws they go towards the middleman basically and what technology is allowing us is more and more ways to cut out the middleman more and more ways for fans to communicate directly with musicians they like to listen to or readers with authors
10:57 am
and this cuts out the profit that middlemen can make and so this is why the this industry is trying to bring in the government in order to keep their old antiquated model so that they could continue to keep their job as the middleman and they want the state to enforce that that's exactly the definition of corporatism and so you see people like chris dodd going on about you know hollywood creates jobs or hollywood is an important part of the u.s. economy was the you know it's a tiny part of the u.s. economy it's a stunning part of the world economy and you know most importantly it's very easy for them to find other business models business models that actually serve the artist rather than serve the old. production industry that really is out of date and out of place today ok that's all the time we have on the kaiser report thanks so much for being on thanks max that's going to do it for this edition of the kaiser report with me guys or as stacy ebert and i thank my guests a for dinner most if you want to send me an e-mail please do so at kaiser reported

intelligence would not talk about his death a spy saga you turned the father of a former f.s.b. officer poisoned in london six years ago accusing him of putin of being behind that there was a mistake. gets a story first hand. the german leader takes. to convince china not to write off that you would get beijing support for the oil embargo against iran. moscow promises to all the past deals are not stopped sending arms to syria insisting and involved it would not stop weapons reaching opposition groups from abroad our top stories this hour.
11:01 am
international news and comment live from moscow this is. an unexpected change of heart the father of a former f.s.b. officer poisoned in london in two thousand and six has backtracked on accusations that then russian president vladimir putin was responsible for his son's death walter lippmann and co said his claims were driven by hatred saying he had no idea his son alexander worked for british intelligence. over went to meet him. but you. know this is how we found mike that leads me and co praying in his tiny telling apartment no electricity no gas no water. what. if it wasn't for the help of various people i would have died from hunger
11:02 am
a frozen to death the last time i took a bath was on christmas eve you know we expected more because six years ago after his son former f.s.b. officer alexander litvinenko was poisoned in london he was taken care of by some very powerful patronage makes elphick south there is berezovsky and i have and a tourist former chechen militant both hiding in the u.k. . yet you get extremist dorsett there and he's just give me a yes but here dorothy you would be. the one vital you to namco sent a letter asking to be interviewed by russian television we expected more of the same but instead we're going to let me have an image of it if you're watching this program please forgive me for all the slander that i said and wrote about you for
11:03 am
all the hatred i had for you if only i had known my son worked for british intelligence i would not talk about his death he could have easily been shot as a double agent betrayers should be shot what else can i add to this. the u.-turn vile turn says came when his son's we doe marina litvinenko revealed to the british media that her husband had worked for m i six further details followed when a newspaper launched its own investigation how it's on the live in yonkers was receiving a retainer of around two thousand pounds a month from the british security services at the time he was murdered it's understood scarlett's now the head of m i six and ones based in moscow was involved in recruiting him to the secret intelligence service. at first by turnitin and cole like many others claimed his son had been poisoned with polonium two ten on putin's
11:04 am
order the former f.s.b. officer and fierce critic of the kremlin alexander litvinenko spent twenty three days in a london clinic slowly dying from a toxic substance possibly consumed through a cup of tea even before police in london started questioning suspects the victim's father was actively accusing the russian government today by their admits he was saying only what the west wanted to hear. of course i realize russia's f.s.b. or not it is enough to take plone into london sprinklers over some heads and leave traces everywhere and their suspect they lugovoy is not a fool either it was anger and blind hatred speaking inside of me my turn now believes his son fell victim to his own game of double agents now he wants his words to be heard but the media outside russia which once beat down his door for interviews now won't even reply to his requests. and why.
11:05 am
because they like it when i scold the regime though i was a real treasure for them well there are very few people who would say as many horrible things about putin as i did. in two thousand and eight but the only thing young called what russia or sanctuary need to leave is settled in the sleeping quiet town of sunni ghalia it over did you anonymous life the man claimed putin was his number one enemy so hiding in europe he believed was the only safe solution today was the only thing and co is still afraid to open this door not because of putin though but because of his landlord to whom hill has a lot of money this miserable life has made him a slave of his sanctuary. that might only be sold everything he had in russia to come to italy he opened a small business several years ago but it went bankrupt things got worse when the seventy three year old had buried his wife but are now fears her casket could be removed because he hasn't paid the coast of
11:06 am
a burial plot and it's been months since the electricity was shot up to his flat he's lost forty euros went on a gas canister and that is gone to you this is how i warm myself there was talk i open this door to let the southern wind inside. there is east and there is russia my homeland. for tourists i want to go home to russia. i don't want to stay here. sit in the church over our t. sity got eataly. iran's nuclear ambitions and the euro zone's debt struggles topped the german chancellor's agenda on her trip to china and the merkel is calling on beijing the biggest buyer of iranian or not to buy more after an e.u.
11:07 am
embargo and to use its influence to persuade to iran to abandon any possible atomic weapons ambitions she also wants to offer reassurance that investing in the eurozone is still a safe bet and i think a lot of this crystal horse still believes getting support for germany's economy is the main reason for the trade. i would chancellor on a triple or begging to if she wants money for europe she wants you know a support from beijing for the new un resolution which beijing is not going to give and she also wants beijing to cut off its own oil supply which beijing is widely not going to do and of course beijing has also to take into consideration that india its competition in the region is standing straight with iran and buying ever more rain in oil so i don't think she has any chance of you know talking china out of buying uranium oil or that were not happen again i would say she will not put any much focus on it she will she will say that she will look to the ceiling
11:08 am
and then she was smile and say let's talk business now her main focus in this trip is german economy and she's wise to do that she will even not you know lobby very much for chinese investment into europe because she knows in our heart of hearts that this is truly a bad investment. coming up on r.t.e. the whistle blower's final appeal. is charged songs to the british judges like extradition to sweden on allegations that excellent well coming up for me in london and just to make. up for it was a country on the brink on the brink of complete meltdown and chaos. find out why the careless comments of u.s. politicians could be costing america credibility on the international stage. still to come for you but first russia's defense ministry has reiterated moscow is
11:09 am
committed to agreements made with its international partners and will continue selling arms to syria russia as against the weapons embargoed saying it would not prevent the arming of opposition groups from abroad although progress has been made at the u.n. on syria resolution moscow is adamant it will block any draft which doesn't rule out military intervention was also words for the arab league observers recent report which accuses both sides of the conflict to be taken into account when the un debates syria it knowledge is the existence of armed groups involved in the killings of civilians and government forces to marcus papadopoulos the editor of politics first magazine said it's not in western interest to listen to the report's findings. western interest in the conflict in syria isn't guided by wanting to advance human rights democracy or the rule of law in the region if it was about that then we'd probably see an american naval flotilla off the coast of saudi arabia which happens to be one of the most repressive and brutal regimes in
11:10 am
the world but it follows a pro western foreign policy the reason why western governments are we can all in the findings of the report is because it doesn't fit into their agenda syria is a huge player in the in middle eastern politics and the west principally america has a very problematic relationship with syria so it would be very much within america's interests for the syrian government for president assad to fall from power and for a more accommodating a more sort of pro western government to come to parallel should that happen. that would give a washington almost food dominance politically in the middle weights and it's what i would describe as a jewish chess board so it's not within the interests of western powers principally america to take into account what has been actually said in the in the reports of
11:11 am
the arab league. more analysis on the situation in syria is available on our website r.t. dot com online all the time there right now for example at the moment frozen water pipes inside japan's crippled fukushima nuclear plant despite warnings months ago that exactly this could happen. praise the spontaneous protest that started on twitter the arab revolutions may actually have taken a decade of expertise to prepare and millions of dollars to fund this story along with many others are available for you right now on our website party dot com. it's the last chance for the world's top whistleblower at the u.k. supreme court in the sciences appealing against extradition to sweden where he's wanted on allegations of sexual assault sanj denies the accusations and insists the case against him is politically motivated parties nor smith is outside the supreme court in london. we're not expecting to hear just station today we have
11:12 am
heard already from documents released by the supreme court that although this is day two of the two day hearing they're going to be reserving judgment for what they term a number of weeks which starlight could mean between two and eight weeks so we will have to wait to find out the birthday this is day two as i say into the nostalgia right this morning about how the full proceedings started again looking fairly relaxed just as he did yesterday saying hello to a few his supporters standing behind me who have braved the at today's subzero temperatures in one to turn out to show him that they are still. rooting for him yet today we heard his legal team giving their side of the story this case out here at the supreme court is no sit back out whether or not associates guilty of the allegations that have been made against him it's about the nuts and bolts of the legal system and specifically about whether the european arrest warrant under which his extradition has been requested is valid the his team say that the swedish
11:13 am
prosecutor who issued the warrant doesn't have the all thirty six do that because it's party to the case and therefore it's not independent and impartial so they can use against a bundle of fundamental difference with the rule of law but today the swedish prosecutor's legal team will be arguing that that doesn't matter and that in fact the issuing authority doesn't have to be independent and impartial we are hearing from inside the court that the argument of the swedish prosecutor's team is coming under a lot more scrutiny than associate teams argument did the judges the much more question of it seemingly less impressed by it that this is the final avenue for him here in england this is the highest court in the land that we're in now he could then take his case the european court of human rights but that's by no means guaranteed however there's a backlog in strasburg. about to eight years so he could be hanging around in this
11:14 am
sort of bizarre limbo if he doesn't win here the cool stuff goes in greatest fear is that he would be an exit resign. from here to sweden with its feet literally wouldn't touch the ground in this week's events sent to the streets of america which of course had the best interest in this either with these allegations that need to be worked with wiki leaks where he he released a huge number of very embarrassing files for the us government and other governments around the world and international businesses so we'll have to wait and see what he does and how how he's going to pass the time and indeed he does decide to continue with. the respect that the blunders of u.s. politicians have inspired jokes and parodies for decades with the presidential election campaign heating up as a whole new supply of ammunition but is there an important report some believe the comments of displays of ignorance and disregard for the facts and no laughing matter. every four years america's top job is up for grabs.
11:15 am
with each new election comes a new batch of candidates with compromising foreign policy credentials when they ask me who's the president you beki beki beki beki stance i'm going to say you know i don't know do you know i'm afraid that it's a very hard struggle particularly given the situation on the iraq pakistan border you can actually see why russia from land here in alaska africa was a country on the brink on the brink of complete meltdown and chaos geographically illiterate us candidates have supplied comedians with endless material but all jokes aside some presidential hopefuls vying to lead the world's most powerful armed forces know very little about america's military interventions so you agree with president obama. forming a cohesive sentence on geopolitics can be
11:16 am
a struggle i do not agree with the way he handled it for the following reasons. no that's that's a different one differentiating between friends and enemies is also a challenge obviously not a fan with our north korean allies in the case of republican candidate mitt romney mixing up presidents and prime ministers can be common i think that president bush represents a real threat to the. stability and peace of the world the overarching ignorance on international affairs has caused american political commentator bill maher to conclude i think anybody could be president in this dumb country. sort of like at this point now where i think if you're gonna be it when you register to be a candidate you also have to go take a test about foreign affairs and if you fail the test we might get you one chance to take it again and then i'm say sorry go run you know for city
11:17 am
council in your little town in alaska if a country with the world's highest national g.d.p. is being represented by politicians with a deficit on international affairs the biggest consequence is likely to be america's credibility around the world and even who we target in let me finish this i just get lost in a blizzard of words there this is where it gets really dangerous for united states of america it's like wait a minute how could they possibly be right about terrorism how could they be right about north korea are going to be right about iran so-called nuclear program when their candidate doesn't even know that there's a north and south korea i think the us is why and so then the world has this very paranoid view of the united states because of the candidates not understanding basic facts or understanding basic principles of international law which unequivocally prohibit torture and if i were president i would be willing to use waterboarding i thank you.
