1:18 pm
it reads while most people are focusing on whether the patriots or giants will win on sunday we had eyes have our sights on a different type of victory defeating the international counterfeiting rings that illegally profit off of this event that f.l. its players and sports fans saw looks like some of the fan as like to have a little play on words there really a different type of victory let's take a minute to define victory here is the sites that were taken down allegedly were selling fake jerseys caps shirts jackets they can have all goods worth and allegedly four point eight million dollars that's i think a lot to you well to put on perspective here first of all let's point out the obvious reason that people turn to these sites for fake sporting gear because the authentic stuff is ridiculously expensive now for the sake of the big game on sunday let's say that you wanted to buy a tom brady or another patriots jersey from the official an f l site you're going to be paying anywhere between one hundred fifty to three hundred dollars this is a money making monster you guys it's not about sports fans but ice reminds us that
1:19 pm
no matter how expensive you've got to play by the rules in their press release they went on to say in sports players must abide by rules of the game and in life individuals must follow the laws of the land are you guys i've had enough i'm crying foul here better yet a fly on the play ice claims that they're protecting the n.f.l. and the fans you see according to forbes each n.f.l. team is worth about one point zero four billion dollars and there are thirty two teams in the league so if you do the math that comes out to about thirty three point two billion and that does not even include the money that they make off of contracts for all four networks to broadcast the games and that's just during the regular season remember that super bowl technically is post season so that's just more money for a special commercials gear and such all filling in the n.f.l. money vault so not only is that f.l. committing a major price interference against us fans as a whole by taking away their opportunity to show off their team spirit but they're also committing a personal foul against your wallet now the league just want. deceiving get away
1:20 pm
with roughing the consumer but hopefully there are enough refs out there to make sure that doesn't happen like that i guess we can be cute till it's all over a little puns about football and combating paraphernalia but in all seriousness the n.f.l. just call it ice begged them pretty please to remove any of their competitors from the web we already make billions but we really can't afford to lose a couple million dollars in this process so please help us government now listen before you take this the wrong way i'm not supporting counterfeit goods all i'm saying is that it's very obvious that some industries in this country which are massive money making industries like the n.f.l. gets take advantage of fans and all those consumers three hundred dollars for real jersey is absurd and the fact that they can obviously call up the feds have them host a super bowl themed crackdown just reminds us how awfully close to big business and big government really have become. all right so jobs numbers were released today for the month of january and compared to what we've seen in the last few years signs are pretty positive official unemployment fell to eight point three percent
1:21 pm
the lowest since february of two thousand and nine the economy is said to have added two hundred forty three thousand workers with numbers for december and november also being revised up now they use six measurement which includes discouraged and marginally attached workers also fell to fifteen point one percent however long term unemployment remains a major issue with the share of the jobless who have been out of work for more than six months currently at forty three percent also that a whopping one point two million people dropped out of the labor force in just the past month so how do you break this all down joining me from our studio in los angeles is richard esko senior fellow with the campaign for america's future richard thanks so much for joining us tonight and like i said i mean overall these numbers are pretty positive do you think that we should look at this as a a one off we had one good month with who or are we finally seeing some kind of a steady trend. well it's too early to tell i think look first of all they are
1:22 pm
positive there's no doubt about it they're certainly positive in comparison to the numbers we've been seeing for quite a long time now but we have to be very careful to make sure that we don't mistake a better month for the kind of month we need i mean let's put this in in a little perspective in order to keep up with population growth and to get unemployment down to what we've always considered on except our rather acceptable levels we'd have to see four hundred thousand jobs a month for three years so i think that you know it's a delicate balancing act here because on the one hand the republicans are going to try to destroy the very measures that have caused this marginal improvement and will try to do things that will spike those numbers up even higher but on the other hand the democrats have got to be careful about thinking it's time to take a victory lap and i've got to double down on the things that need to be done to get these numbers into an acceptable range i mean we're talking about projections that
1:23 pm
show unemployment to be way over what's considered acceptable for at least several years going into two thousand and fifteen two thousand and sixteen and later so we have to really be talking about that we have to be talking about the long term unemployed which consists of millions of americans whose lives have been devastated we have to kind of do that a balancing act between saying yeah less bad news is way better than terrible news something's trending well and i think the other side of it is we have to say how much of this is at risk because of other forces that are going on the chance of europe you know hurting our performance or the chances of being know some other catastrophic event bank failure so it's complicated it goes in a lot of different directions but basically good is only so-so. so we really get things moving again and you know when you listen investment rich i mean i'm happy
1:24 pm
you mentioned they're into the long term unemployed because while we have these positive figures right now on the surface there really is this entire shadow class that's forming and we have forty three percent of people that are been unemployed for more than six months it only becomes increasingly difficult to get a job after you've been unemployed for a long time and like i said one point two million people just dropped out just gave up and aren't even part of the workforce and aren't even counted in the government's figures one point two million in just one month so how do we properly talk about that. well and i think to add to that you have what's essentially a primarily white people's recovery right now we still have devastating unemployment in the african-american community in the hispanic community among young people so we have a whole segment of the population being sliced off and so we have to be careful first of all not to turn these numbers into an excuse for the kind of destruction the republicans want but also not to let democrats take
1:25 pm
a victory lap when so much more needs to be done we really should be talking about serious government investment over the next couple years and putting people back to work what do you think that the government necessarily should be investing at right for example manufacturing sector gained jobs in the month of january we also know the president recently rolled out a new plan for manufacturing but then some people out there are asking whether that's really the right thing to do do we necessarily want to get manufacturing that or should we learn how to diversify should we learn how to teach workers new skills so we can move forward and progress. you know there's a reason why manufacturing jobs are going offshore and the apple stories that have come out about the deaths and injuries that apple suppliers in china are great example of that one of the reasons why we're losing many of manufacturing jobs in this country is because companies like apple look the other way and tacitly encourage their contractors overseas to engage in unsafe work practices that cause
1:26 pm
great harm to their employees so we should be looking at rebuilding manufacturing in this country which is an achievable goal we should be looking at making it impossible to look the other way if you're an american company while allowing and tacitly encouraging your suppliers to cut costs by threatening them in life and safety that's doable we should stop believing this fifty thousand number fifty thousand new manufacturing jobs as a lot of people scratching their heads but it shows us one thing for sure that those of us who are saying we can have more manufacturing jobs in this country are right so we should do more to keep that momentum going all right and then what are your thoughts today the president gave a speech in arlington where he talked about new initiatives for veterans he wants to set up a veterans corps he wants more communities to hire them as police and as firefighters you know want to give grants to communities that do that as well as you know also
1:27 pm
help them get new training so they can be entrepreneurs and set up small businesses i think that it's about time that we did that until. sure of course i mean something like that should be a slam dunk it shows how crazy our politics are that that's even controversial but of course republicans will vote it down now but the problem is that people will look at that and say that was the most we could possibly consider doing that proposal is great but it's very inadequate for the job that needs to be done if the president's and the democrats are going to lose on their proposals they've got a little learn to lose better by telling the american people exactly what we need to get back to the kind of employment that this country can and should be seeing all right so you say that it's not enough last question have me switch gears for one second new york times had an interesting report today because we've heard a lot in the obama administration that they're trying to be more vigilant about going after mortgage fraud and what not but new york times says that if you look at
1:28 pm
the as the thiel looks like over the years they have always let the big firms go. well i wouldn't say always but i would certainly say in the last decade for sure and the administration's record in terms of enforcing criminal or fraudulent behavior on par on the part of the big boys is really one it should be terribly embarrassed about and ashamed of and if it wants to go ahead and show the american people that it's serious i think the new york times is absolutely correct it provides a lot of valuable information to add on what we already knew and i think it's now time for the administration to show its serious by beginning some criminal investigations against some of the major banks and other institutions where there's overwhelming evidence to create what lawyers call reasonable suspicion suspicion and start an investigation as an action instead of just the rhetoric richard thanks so much for joining us tonight. you bet good to be. coming up next that get the school. again going to tell the. florida wants to cash in on right after the break
1:29 pm
we're going to speak with atticus fareed of the young turks to find out how the state might break records when it comes to prison at the same.
1:30 pm
ten thirty pm in moscow these are your r.t. headlines russia and china vetoed the u.n. security council's resolution on syria at a vote in new york moscow wanted all references to regime change taken out of the draft. more than two hundred thousand brave the bitter cold across russia to ensure their views on national politics are heard one group demanding fair elections march through the streets others are out in support of the current leadership. of the european demand a free internet as people flood the streets in protest against an anti-piracy act
1:31 pm
being signed across the continent. up next the alone a show takes a look at the tense relations heating up between the u.s. israel and iran as well as the latest report on the u.s. jobs stay with us oh. oh . hi guys it's time for science tools i'm award and tonight we're giving one huge gigantic prize to the federal bureau of investigation as a whole if you attempt to nab those tied to the hacktivist group anonymous the
1:32 pm
f.b.i. reached out to scotland yard to try to build a unified case against some of the hackers are under their radar but during a conference call on january seventeenth between the two agencies anonymous took the liberty to intercept that call which could prove to be a big help to some of its members so the topic of the call has to do with two not jake davis better known as topiary and ryan clearly the british teenager whose home was raided by police both of them were supposed to face trial on january twenty seventh but that trial was delayed and now we know now why such a charge and this was really wrong and clearly a charge started this year of course on the twenty seventh. for instance discussing with your coffers we're looking to try some time in sort of operational buses from so on your side of the water. now the conference call also discusses the rearrest of two other hijackers and the delaying of their arrest
1:33 pm
without the defense's knowledge so they can throw anonymous off. the rest of. the flow. and so we know. prosecution counsel make it up because you're. in charge because a without defense knowledge. seeker why to try to some time a lot of them suspicious. so much for keeping these hackers out of the loop they are the entire plan you guys both know here's my question to my f.e.r.s. calling yard bank to have anybody tech savvy check and make sure that their correspondence was protected after all you guys are going after a pretty savvy group of hackers but now. they didn't bother and look who's featured on anonymous event and f.b.i. friday none other than the bureau itself and elise call which you can listen to in its entirety on the web certainly doesn't inspire
1:34 pm
a whole lot of confidence and what's worse for the f.b.i. is that anonymous has been really busy on this f.b.i. friday hell they've been multitasking between this and hacking for the sake of exposing details of the hit the massacre and attempts to show the legal musings of our military judicial system anonymous took down the website of the attorneys who defended sergeant frank wuterich the man who sentence was reduced in a plea deal over the head to the massacre in iraq one that left twenty four civilians dead back in two thousand and five now in their hack anonymous left this message on the attorney's website so it's part of our ongoing efforts to expose the corruption of the court systems and the brutality of u.s. imperialism we want to bring attention to u.s. embassy sergeant frank wuterich can you believe this scumbag had his charges reduced to involuntary manslaughter and got away with only a pay cut meanwhile bradley manning who was brave enough to risk his life and freedom to expose the truth about government corruption is threatened with life imprisonment so yeah i think it's fair to say that anonymous has been splitting up its efforts over a few different projects yet somehow they've just managed to outsmart the feds once
1:35 pm
again it's not only embarrassing but it's a little disturbing you know the organization tasked with protecting the people against terrorists organized crime and yes even hackers cyber warriors who obviously are incapable of handling some of these threats if they're having their lines have to by the very people that they're talking about i mean the irony here is just too thick while talking about anonymous they get hacked by anonymous so i think i've said enough that is tonight's tool time winner. well the state of florida is currently front and center for the debate over private prisons in america lawmakers are voting on a piece of legislation that would result in the single largest expansion of for profit prisons in the country would make twenty percent of the state's correctional system privatized as being sold as a cost saving move state of florida face a more than three billion dollars deficit but looking at past examples across the country looking at campaign donations can say that this is about anything else than money for big business and if florida does take this step and the third largest
1:36 pm
prison system in the nation sees itself so why the privatized think how we stop it from happening everywhere else joining me to discuss this and because barry and co-host of the young turks and thanks so much for joining us tonight you know this is a topic that you and i have discussed many times before but do you think we've ever seen anything of the sheer magnitude of what's being debated in florida right now. definitely not the same magnitude you see similar things happen with the expansion of private prisons in arizona you've seen this happened in ohio and you know the private prison lobby is very very successful at lobbying toward republicans and getting republicans to not only pass tough on crime laws that put more people away behind bars but also expand the prisons so i love that you brought up you know the cost saving. excuse that a lot of lawmakers make when it comes to private prisons because we have a lot of case studies to look at when it comes to arizona and ohio where you have
1:37 pm
a little last time that you and i spoke about this topic i think that we were speaking about arizona specifically and it turns out there that it was costing the taxpayer more money you know to keep the prisoners in private prisons but then since that you know has anything new come out have they at least tried to launch a new study before trying to push this legislation in florida. well what's really interesting is that those all the studies that have been conducted so far have been mixed when you have studies that have been commissioned by the private prisons that say oh we are saving money don't worry this is a really great thing for you to do and that's what the politicians in florida are using as an example of why they should expand the private prisons there but when you look at arizona specifically yes it did cost taxpayers a lot of money because what these private prisons do is they're run like businesses their incentive is to make money like that's what they want to do so what they do is whenever they choose which inmates they take into their private prison system
1:38 pm
they make sure that they take in healthy prisoners prisoners that do not have any mental health issues so what happens is all of these private prisons get the healthy nonviolent prisoners that doesn't cost very much money to take care of and then the state gets left with the ill prisoners that the taxpayers have to spend a lot of money on so in the end it doesn't save the state money at all that's what we've seen in arizona and there have been other studies that prove that private prisons do not save the taxpayer money it's amazing to me is that they're called private prisons but at the same time all of their revenue is needed by the taxpayer . there's a really good point so you bring up there and especially if you're supposed to be taking in the low cost prisoners and making it cheaper and it's still not coming out any cheaper that i would say that you know that something is amiss now you mention of course the fact that industry does lobby heavily and they have done so with republicans in florida i believe the having opposed said. they spent about one
1:39 pm
point four million dollars or one point four million dollars for florida's representatives do we see the same kind of thing across the country. absolutely the prison lobby is very powerful you know just like any lobby in the country they use financial incentives to laura politicians into whatever agenda it is that they have you know when you look at florida law makers in recent years they have donated one point four million dollars in order to convince these politicians to expand the private prisons and also as in arizona to pass a law or a tough on crime i should say laws for instance s.b. ten seventy was one of the laws in arizona that these private prisons were really pushing for and they were very successful with that and you see the expansions you know in ohio in arizona in florida to give you a very specific example the florida senate president mike carey darpa lists received twenty five thousand dollars recently from the private prisons and
1:40 pm
haridopolos is extremely extremely supportive of the private prison system in fact he just stripped a senator mike as arnold's chairmanship because of the fact that as i know has been very outspoken against private prisons and you know i got to give him a world of credit because he is a g.o.p. lawmaker but he's saying look we have a huge budget crisis here in florida we need to do something to actually save money in the private prison system is not ceding these states money at our look at these case studies in arizona look at ohio we've got to pay attention to this we go do something that makes sense also keep in mind that we can you know privatized system the problem prison system and have these not violent of the ender's go away to prison we should be focusing on things like giving them the help they need so they can get over drug addictions or whatever nonviolent offenses they're guilty of. i'm just curious is there any kind of you know relationship or battle between the
1:41 pm
private prison industry and the prison guard unions those that work in the state run or the federal run prisons because i've seen you know also that one of the effects that they're afraid of here in florida as that once a prison is privatized there are going to be massive layoffs they're going to find out how to do it with fewer workers at the same time we often blame the prison guard unions for pushing also for tough on crime laws because they want to keep their jobs and they need the prisons full. the excellent point about that as you know one of the main issues with private prisons is they don't need to have you know not unionized jobs so a lot of these employees that work in county and state prisons could lose their jobs if you see this huge expansion of the private prison system at the same time you know those who work in these you know nice job and those in the private prisons all of them push through the tough on crime policies that don't make any sense at all if anything we need to focus on a completely different way of dealing with nonviolent offenders and you know drug
1:42 pm
abusers in the country and honestly when you really think about it that's the only way the state can save money instead of locking people away and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on them each year why don't we give them you know drug rehabilitation programs and other forms of getting over whatever addictions they have instead of putting them in jail right now locking up drug offenders at a ridiculous rate and we're spending so much money on this war against drugs if we just ended that we would save so much money but of course it's sort of doing that we live in a police state we want to expand the private prisons we want to put more people behind bars in the last decade alone we have seen a one third increase in the number of inmates in private prisons and it continues to grow so it's not really a great thing for the country i think we're focusing in the wrong direction when it comes to saving money and dealing with all these budget crisis crises throughout the country and we all know that money can be pretty persuasive especially if
1:43 pm
you're a politician you know some companies in the private prison industry want to donate a lot here a campaign so i think of this case in florida here might be a good test like i said is the third largest correctional system in the entire country so if they fall and they go this direction scare to say what will happen elsewhere and i thank so much for joining us tonight thank you. i still to come to my fireside friday and a happy hour roseanne barr to be president and to cover the latest on the conflict between the coleman foundation and planned parenthood.
1:44 pm
from los angeles to chicago to birmingham twenty trauma centers have closed since two thousand severe problem is not enough inpatient beds not on the third emergency department beds and not enough nurses to man goes there to take care of all the people who are here the only real health care system that we have in the city of los angeles is the los angeles fire department in fact when i started my venture is a firefighter i didn't want to do your mass and i started out going to just do firefighting it's about eighty two percent of what we do the farther problem is medical but they had a rescue couple weeks ago waited four hours for big i've waited sometimes three
1:45 pm
hours but i was it's a same francis and we went for four hours and fifty minutes standing against a wall with a patient and we have a federal law that mandates that you can't turn no one away who seeks care in an emergency room. we have the most expensive health. it's in the world and it's probably valued the least. to tonight's fireside. this week we saw a perfect example of just how dysfunctional our political system has become just how hypocritical our politicians really can be and i think we all remember really well the battle that went on last summer as republicans pushed the country to the brink of default and pushed against raising the debt ceiling but
1:46 pm
a deal was made the cuts would be made and that a congressional super committee would have to decide on one point two trillion dollars worth of those cuts if not a trigger would go into effect cutting evenly six hundred billion dollars in automatic to cuts from defense and six hundred billion dollars from domestic programs as we all know that fateful supercommittee failed to reach a deal and so as of january of two thousand and thirteen that trigger effect is supposed to come into play now as unhappy as republicans were about it john boehner have said that they would honor those cuts if they would honor the deal after all this wasn't something that the president imposed upon them this was a deal that congress had reached and had agreed to. that notion seems now that they might actually agree to something on paper and then fulfill that promise you see this week a number of republican senators unveiled a plan to delay or basically try to avoid those looming spending cuts from going into effect in two thousand and thirteen and this is where it gets kind of ridiculous this is where you see just how hypocritical the republicans are about
1:47 pm
defense how completely untouchable it is in their eyes and let's be honest here it's about the kids that believe in austerity and believe in god but they believe in it everywhere except for where defense is concerned so in order for the defense budget to not get chopped by another six hundred billion this was the plan that was unveiled it would do the fall it would reduce the federal workforce by five percent and freeze federal pay for. two and a half years so in order to cut so-called government spending which republicans supposedly hate they will get rid of part of the federal workforce of the defense the largest chunk of nondiscretionary government spending can stay so that numerous contracts can continue to be given out to by the government to defense contractors and the like now let's also not forget that all of this was done in order to refrain from having to raise taxes because raising taxes according to republicans is a job killer but here in order to not raise taxes they are killing federal jobs so does this make any sense to any of you.
