video evidence from the country raises questions as to exactly what's happening there just a warning you may find some of the images in this report disturbing. each and social networking sites have for the past ten months being one of the activists he means is offering the world glimpses of been violence this tool in three syrian activists goods reports how we got the brick through and we've just seen pictures which the b.b.c. called verify to say many differing numbers and reports getting to the ball some of what's really going on is a major challenge even from inside the country. was. that i think they think. you're right if they. had as the u.n. security council showdown this weekend and the violence in syria seemed to reach fever pitch with activists reporting

a massacre in homs that was live the headlines and watched with horror by people worldwide initially the death toll that night was put over two hundred you see there could be as many as two hundred dead just in the last hour or two that was later significantly downgraded street to access policies they have made it difficult for many foreign networks to get their correspondents into the country to collect evidence at the end of last year i leveled this criticism at the foreign minister's spokesman we've never banned the media by the way. because objectivity we've been filtering you how can you justify for instance you on the people relying on you tube and broadcasting one side even though or even on you tube you have also atrocity committed by the elements it's true that to a large extent mainstream coverage of the trade of the canned has been pretty sparse . this graphic video appears to show every. being hanged with the clear picture of

exactly what's happening in syria right now to know what the western allies that the u.n. basing their assertions which is not really about genuine human rights and democracy this is all about region change dissatisfied with the wedding of the resolution china v tahj the latest prepays many felt it contained disturbing a case of libya russia and china believe the do or a pin for foreign military intervention as a conflict between the two sides as the crisis in syria is becoming increasingly internationalized but a miss is in place slim a bold to try to put an end to the violence again has to be very careful not to make the same mistakes made in libya seems to be backing one so i think the looking like civil war. are not. indecent and

hysterical that's how russia's foreign minister described the criticism by some western countries of the russian china veto sort of rob was speaking ahead of his upcoming visit to damascus where he's scheduled to meet with syrian authorities tuesday or he's peter all over has more. this was continuing on from the system by china and russia to veto the recent un resolution on syria from moscow so he laughed it off saying that russia had asked the un security council to delay the vote for several days in order to allow mr lovett off to complete his trip to damascus now they were that request were turned down by the u.n. security council so he left off heading to damascus on tuesday bearing with him a message from president dmitry medvedev a message that's believed to request the assad government make strong democratic changes in the country now the foreign ministry very unhappy about this the russian government very unhappy in fact going as far as to call it disrespectful to allow
2:06 pm
the not allow the vote to be delayed until. it completed that trip now. with regards to the comments that it be made from around the world following that the session by china and russia to veto the u.n. resolution with a condemnation from the united states from france from great britain the foreign secretary in great britain going as far as to say that this meant there was blood on the hands of those that had vetoed it well so very unhappy about these comments he was speaking at a press conference alongside the pattern of foreign minister he said that he was scathing in his response to those comments made from abroad some western comments on the outcome of the u.n. security council syrian resolution vote sounded decent and almost hysterical in this connection i recall the old saying that those who are angry are really right why these are still recall statements attempts are being made to blur what is really happening in syria and what's really happening is that there are several
2:07 pm
sources of violence in syria not just one it seems that the resolution cool authors who rushed to vote despite the odds are more interested in simply finding somebody to blame drawing attention away from the armed group. that are receiving weapons and other kinds of encouragement from abroad but with regards to why russia vetoed that resolution over the weekend twelve russia's position on syria has always been the same they condemn both sides both the assad killed and the the opposition and want them both sides to put down their weapons and come to the table for talks now as far as russia will come soon the resolution was on the table only focused on the government forces and didn't make any requests from the the opposition to lay down their arms and as far as russia concerned that's not acceptable when it comes to a u.n. resolution on syria for some perspective on this let's speak with fergus hudson from the political a political analyst from the future of freedom foundation. so russia and china
2:08 pm
traditionally stand together to resist u.n. resolutions on syria put forward by the west now this is kind of like a big issue that's tough to put in a nutshell i guess but why is there such a division between these two permanent security council members and the rest of them so they have a closer relationship with syria only much more reluctant to support interventions . of the russian. military and naval capacity as it has a base in syria so there are various reasons why i wouldn't i wouldn't say it's a distinction as you might have characterize it because china has said that it basically taking a neutral position on this and not necessarily supporting or opposing what syria is doing. so far russia has taken most of the criticism from the west for the double veto with china why do you think the reaction why do you think china's decision seems less harsh here. they have made the point clearly that they are
2:09 pm
not taking a position either way they're not a lot of themselves with the syrian leadership in the way that the russians may be since they are going and meeting with the syrian leadership tomorrow and as i mentioned they do have a base. on syrian on the syrian cars line so russia is a much closer relationship one that could it could be interpreted as being supportive of the syrian leadership as opposed to china's more neutral stance don't want to get involved do you think china's increasingly important role in the global financial system also plays into their decision in this regard sure yeah i mean definitely the us of those you know one of the half trillion dollars to china they are. growing more and more and more dependent the u.s. is more and more dependent upon china for financial support and that's only going to grow over time so yes i mean. you could make that claim if the moscow and beijing ever pay diddly warned against taking sides in the syrian conflict saying it could cause more bloodshed the u.s. u.k.
2:10 pm
and france have been putting pressure on the government while openly supporting the opposition why do you think that is but the european and u.s. allies if i can call them that they seem hell bent on a regime change and nothing less so any sort of more peaceful resolution that would allow assad to stay in power would not be sufficient in the minds. of the same countries that i've also said that russia and china who oppose foreign involvement in syria should bear responsibility for the bloodshed at the same time do you think western allies are prepared to take responsibility for civilian deaths that were incurred during the nato campaign in libya and the unrest sense. choi insofar as that they they funded and trained yes they can they do have a responsibility to supply and right now the u.s. and european nations are able to invoke what's going on in syria in terms of funding and training of the opponents of the free syrian army so
2:11 pm
yes they do have some responsibility they might say that in the long run that that responsibility is worth it that they are achieving you know positive long term goals. with it whether that's the case and it remains to be saying right now it's only getting worse all right fergus had said a political analyst from the future of freedom foundation thanks for your insight my pleasure will stay with us here on r t still ahead this hour a whistleblower nominated for the nobel peace prize a u.s. soldier accused of using secret files to wiki leaks now on the list of candidates for the prestigious award we talk to one of the people behind his nomination. but first with less than a month to go before russia's presidential vote emotions are running high as campaigns shift up a gear following a day of demonstrations across russia a prime minister and presidential hopeful vladimir putin continues laying out his electoral program this time it's more about web shape democracy with initiatives allowing people to suggest their own laws online or he has more. well the main idea
2:12 pm
of the sort of go is that civil society in russia has grown and developed and become much more active most importantly compared to say ten years ago and what comes to the state well it's a lagging behind at the moment people do want to be more active and have more influence on the political life and one of the mechanisms providing these opportunities is the internet and this is not only about the tens of thousands of people who now take to the streets for this or that rally is about millions of internet users in russia who over the past few years have become very active there is stories of blogs and forums videos all internet wars between political movements and all of them are going on on the web and the prime minister wants to see the role of the internet is influenced increase more user friendly government websites to provide proper bases for public discussion and not only on initiatives
2:13 pm
put forward by the state any person any internet user has to be able to put forward their own draft law and if it gains say one hundred thousand approval signatures from other users it has to be reviewed by the parliament the internet also gives another opportunity to evaluate civil servants for example if locals of a district of any city are not satisfied with the way the head of the local police department works or a judge or even a principal of a local school they have to be able to voice their concerns on the web be heard by the authorities so that the civil servants can be substituted but let's move the web aside for a bit and focus on all the initiatives like reintroducing the elections of local governors was initially put forward by the president and supported by the prime minister now another initiative in this sphere is easing the rules for registering new political parties which should make way for more competition now this brings us to another problem of corruption and the prime minister is proposing to increase
2:14 pm
the salaries. in exchange for their complete transparency and put together a list of the most corrupt jobs. people wanted all the guards there a need for civil servants because these positions are often viewed as possibilities to make easy money quick and. it's time for that to change as well. but you can find plenty more on this and every story that we're covering a click away at our t.v. dot com including this the kremlin wants a more competitive approach to politics and russian president medvedev saying the country needs a strong liberal party to break the mold of current politics more highlights of what he had to say a click away on our website. plus u.s. battleships carrying out military drills off the east coast of the country ahead of their deployment to the persian gulf it's thought the drill map could depict a country resembling iran find out more by clicking to our key dot com.

greece's prime minister is struggling to get coalition party leaders to buy into harsh new international bailout terms talks have now been postponed until tuesday but a massive fifteen thousand jobs cut has already been accepted this is pressure mounts on athens with the european commission spokesman saying that deadlines already passed the country must now accept even more painful cuts if it's to get a one hundred thirty billion euro second lifeline from international creditors if the deal falls through greece is expected to fall by the end of march for more perspective on this i'm joined by next creek as an economic analyst an international lawyer so talks between the greek coalition party leaders have dragged on but some concessions have been made including this fifteen thousand civil service firings that we've mentioned does that technocrat government have
2:16 pm
much choice in the matter. but there is actually very little choice for greece at the moment both options on the table are very bad you either accept draconian measures from international lenders or you head for the dollar and you default calamitously and it's a chaotic eurozone exit but i must reiterate this for the international audience it's not exactly a technocratic government it's actually a caretaker government under a technocrat prime minister it's the three political leaders that will actually call the shots and even if they agree they still have to persuade all of the parliamentary deputies in that body to actually pass this through parliament. now how much more can the greek people take do you think unions are calling for another nationwide strike meant there will be a twenty four hour strike tomorrow by the private sector umbrella union and the public sector on broadway union a it looks like it won't be a very good weather day so we may not see the hundreds of thousands or even twenty
2:17 pm
or thirty thousand which we usually see but they may be some violence now what greeks can understand and can cope with ease structural reforms most create some of this then that there is a need for they're not particularly happy about fire sale privatisation because that really offends people what they have hit the limit with ease tax increases and more cuts to pensions and especially private sector wages on the ballot policy hasn't proved to be very effective so far greece has already got an international cash but it's a debt still continues to grow why do you think e.u. politicians are so committed to this bailout and austerity solution. matt they committed to bailouts in the sense originally that they wanted to support the european banking sector far more than the greek state because it would have been. untold losses for the european banking system and it would have abraded around the
2:18 pm
world of course it was a very shortsighted plan to begin with what they completely ignored was that you had to reduce the day because it was unsustainable to begin with it took them one and a half years to figure that out and of course they also be ignored and the ideological guys that austerity was a dead end it's just been a very toxic mix and over those perhaps it's crushed the man which has led to economic shrinkage the greek economy has shrunk fifteen percent in the space of two years and of course that means less tax revenues harder to service your debt. now we're seeing more distance slowly between politicians and people in greece and in germany chancellor merkel determined to keep greece in the euro zone most of the german people seem to think at in the should leave why do you think there is such a polarized point to polarize point of view here in greece i can understand that the polarization completely the political system here has been diluted in my eyes the greeks had not been told the truth of many decades they didn't understand that
2:19 pm
the prosperity that they were enjoying was on the basis of dead rather than actual growth here in terms of germany i think that the politicians have not exactly expressed themselves very well they've been quite populist they've jumped on to certain media interest that have tended to vilify mediterranean countries and living in greece and not having told the whole picture now it's much harder to sell the average german taxpayer that they need to help and how they should help. experience as economic analysts and international lawyer thanks for your type. claim of private bradley manning a u.s. soldier accused of passing classified material to whistle blowing web site wiki leaks has consistently made of into the headlines mostly in connection with his trial but now his name is on a different list that of more than two hundred nominees for the nobel peace prize brigitta yon's daughter a member of u.s.
