the comeback turned into triumph lubin of scored his second on the night to give his side the three to lead the eastern star swore giving their best to call was by it was the western netminder or months media again who stole the show in then and producing to him a zing saves and them to net their advantage setting the final score for two. we just lost our concentration up to take it to no lead we thought of the main job was done and would score a couple more goals and win the game easily was completely the opposite and we were made to pay for overconfidence talking we still have a lot to learn. there was no pressure we know each other very well and it was fun to meet on the ice once again and settle scores at such a high level of competition. everybody was cheering for the east but the crowd support did not. well there's the we didn't have time to build any sort of

the arab league is expected to call on the un to create a joint peacekeeping force for syria as a group aims to mount pressure on president assad. police in greece particles into crowds of protesters running outside parliament which is set for a vote on more public sector cuts. and the run promises to reveal major advances in its nuclear program which it insists it's a peaceful energy purposes despite the long list of western sanctions imposed against it our top stories.
2:01 pm
the arab league is expected to call on the u.n. security council to pass a resolution creating a joint peacekeeping force for syria the group also wants more international support for the opposition and hopes to pull further pressure on the regime where we hope to get some reaction from cairo a little later on the latest developments concerning the arab league meetings there but in the meantime let's now cross live to london and talk to author and journalist action returns see. action with the arab league now looking very likely to be calling for a joint un peacekeeping mission for an intervention is inevitable now isn't it. one module dictators talking about another dictator i think the arab league is being used presumably as some kind of proxy because we know that the united states and the european union have all but military intervention. could happen
2:02 pm
should happen some sources even saying british sure special forces already in the ground so maybe there is already foreign intervention we know there is some kinds of foreign intervention but it's there under the guise of a peacekeeping mission wouldn't it create peace and therefore create an environment for negotiations. look i think bill there is a role for the u.n. and if it can get past its paymasters as it were on monday we human rights chief is delivering a talk about human rights at the u.n. general assembly this is carefully timed as other other announcements have been turning the u.n. could have a role i mean we have heard about al-qaeda. in syria now and they could police the guns and weapons going into syria now that would be a great thing you could do all the borders are notorious. forty seven hundred fifty two hundred dollars a gun in iraq few months ago the now one of the few thousand dollars
2:03 pm
a gun which is the demand for weapons by al qaeda insurgents going to support american and british interests in syria who is much questioning over the make up of the opposition you just mentioned al qaida in effect are we not seeing. washington and its allies actually supporting al-qaeda that in effect. yes once again the united states and european union states as usual supporting al-qaeda as they did in afghanistan prior to nine eleven will they never learn it is shocking to hear a american statesman like john mccain calling for intervention presumably u.s. troops and al qaeda side by side fighting against president assad of syria this really shows what exactly americans are up to they are not protecting the interests of u.s. citizens and nor european union leaders our very statement to back any attacks with

lethal consequence in a letter twenty eight dead in december forty four dead in damascus. this is getting out of hand is getting dangerous let's hope that turkey which refused to operate it called all senators could have happened they see sense countries like turkey and of course qatar using soft power at the moment to great effect to give a distorted view of what's happening in syria today talking about the effectiveness of the u.n. security council a week ago a resolution was vetoed there over concerns of impartiality we're now seeing the friends of syria group forming which includes the u.s. and its allies is this in fact a way of bypassing the u.n. and international law to push forward the agenda from the west point of view. what an incredibly dangerous group the friends of syria will be presumably will have hillary clinton and british foreign secretary of the foreign secretaries and i don't know mr harry him self all in all meeting together as friends of syria this
2:05 pm
is a determined attempt to have demonic power it is it is i think going to fail because perhaps president obama election even his policy advisers are telling him this could rapidly spiral out of control and one only has to see the president as a room where he sits can see that his allies iraq iran lebanon these countries will trade with syria so there's not going to be any sanctions but what is saudi arabia up to what is qatar up to. the real test of the united nations it's rapidly getting more and more serious this is interesting you mentioned the allies of syria some analysts we've talked to believe that washington actually wants to use this conflict along with the arab and other nato allies as a means of targeting iran and hezbollah in lebanon you see this clearly as an implication here it's obviously reverberating in the background all the time there
2:06 pm
are reports now that television studios like a b c news the graphics rooms are already preparing graphics and so forth and training the senior correspondent strew cover a war against iran i think i think at the moment what seems likely to happen is that people will start to back down from the. u.s. foreign policy just very briefly after we see that iran actively getting physically involved in syria itself if we saw foreign intervention just briefly from nato and the west and arab allies just briefly. that there have been erroneous reports that iran is sending in people into syria it certainly isn't getting involved in that way at the moment of fact iran has made critical statements against the assad regime as to how it has been treating its people into spoke to reform so i don't think iran before any full scale war would get involved in of course if there
2:07 pm
really was a military attack on syria we can expect to see white spread widespread disaster in the middle east and blowback in the united states al qaeda must be thinking well will follow again will work with us yet again and in a couple years time another nine eleven and america will again. and what sunni extremism and so laugh as a means action we'll be talking about this again no doubt in the near future thank you in the meantime for your thoughts there live in london afshin rattansi joining me well now we can go to cairo to get the latest from our show she is there where the pan arab arab league has been meeting why is the league calling for this action this peacekeeping mission along with the u.n. and what would it actually mean for the situation now in syria. well by the looks of it the arab league is running out of options as a matter of fact they have at one point postponed their official statement and there are some rumors saying that the reason for that is because els year and
2:08 pm
lebanon have actually come out saying that they are against a u.n. peacekeeping mission that they do want syrians to sort things out on their own without any foreign intervention however by looks of it the arab league is going to call for u.n. peacekeepers to enter the country they're also going to call for tougher sanctions on syria and they're also going to abort the observers mission which was a hold to last month of course all of this is coming amongst the growing violence in the country which has been escalating by weeks essentially of course that the president of syria bashar al assad is saying that there is foreign intervention already playing at hand here and he did say that there were some. that there was some military support coming from all qaeda fighters and mostly only on the outer regions of syria and there was some iraq intelligence which did support those claims they did say that some. of the iraqi at the that the al qaeda fighters were
2:09 pm
of were flying into syria or or coming into syria from its border with iraq of course all of this is also coming right when washington is pressing hard on assad to step down and it's railing for anybody willing to join the coalition the so-called friends of syria who are going to meet in tunisia on the twenty fourth of february and that was also one of the main points which was discussed at the arab league on sunday is meeting in cairo so again the situation in syria remains very tense the observers will be the observers mission will be pulled out what exactly will happen with the country and the mission keeping mission or the observers mission is not really quite clear at all river means and. remains to be seen of course. both sides to hold talks is there any chance of any sort of negotiation happening. well most go again there was one of the one of the two
2:10 pm
countries until now they were saying that syrians need to sort things out on their own most russia and china have vetoed the un resolution which was very very adamantly position against syria at last at least that's how russia saw it russia did supports the arab league plan for the observer mission but they did believe that sometimes the mission was not entirely successful let's have a listen to russia's ambassador to the united nations without the choke and we had something to say on the matter as the morning during mission of that i believe was there and the as the situation was of warming everybody saw the the government troops were pulling out of certain domes or sort of quarters in the city is that door to door he was taken over by armed rebel groups that would mean that the the armed confrontation will continue and escalate. a russian

delegation was in damascus for talks with president assad just on tuesday and after those talks president assad has emerged saying that he's willing to come into it to come and join the dialogue with the opposition the unfortunate thing being of course the opposition is not willing to carry out any talks with the current syrian government russia insists that syrians should should sort things out on their own without any foreign intervention. however unfortunately by looks of it the the rest of the world community isn't. it isn't all of the same opinion and the meeting of the arab league in cairo on sunday proves that point once again that hearing the thanks for that these are in english the reporting live from cairo. in greece police have fired tear gas and stun grenades into crowds of protesters who throwing stones and far bombs at them have been reports of several injuries

during the scuffles outside parliament in athens lawmakers are debating a choice between tough new cuts or an imminent default which the country's prime minister says would lead to chaos the creditors want an unpopular new a sturdy bill passed in return for the one hundred thirty billion euro rescue package the cabinet has cleared the plan but lost six ministers or deputies in the process some coalition m.p.'s of threatened to vote against it if it goes ahead though fifteen thousand civil servants will lose their jobs and the minimum wage will be slashed thousands of greeks have been protesting the deal throughout the week investment advisor patrick young has told me earlier that eurozone leaders could now be prepared to expel greece from the currency union. in every possible respect greek greece is not a tragedy and it is due and the reason for that is simply because there is no way that they are going to be able to implement whatever austerity they're talking about this weekend against such a backlash of public opinion whatever happens there the problem for the rest of the

euro zone is that not i we have to basically prepared to defend the whole integrity of the euro and actually if you read what's been said behind the behind closed doors this week at the euro zone and indeed from the summit you can see there's a spirit that you know what we may have to do three so we may even have to end up ditching portugal from the euro zone but we're we have to defend not i is italy and that's really going to fall on the shoulders of the technocrat mario monti and this is going to be our cataclysmic event during the course of the latest april does the euro survive at the moment i think probably a shrunken euro it's sixty forty it can do but ultimately we're going to see swinge in recession even worse of the recession read out of we've already been receiving for the course of this week through why do european union and that's bad for everybody in the world regardless of what happens today regardless of what the vote is ultimately within the next maybe it weeks greece is going to be forced to default and that's going to be quite cataclysmic patrick young talking

a little earlier with these are live pictures now from the center of the things we're bringing to you here on our team we can see thousands of protesters have gathered outside the greek parliament we've seen protests there all week and now we're seeing them today because this is the day when parliament is debating more deep cuts and we can bring you all these events live for you on our web site of the moment just head to r.t. dot com cream the life events there from athens throughout the night. well still ahead here on r.t. a year since the toppling of mubarak but instead of celebrating. his people feel betrayed by the military rulers and want change that still hasn't come. a good mix of politically active russians take the matter of election transparency into their own hands organizing voters leak. all that sort of come before us iran says it will soon reveal some major advances in its nuclear program speaking on the thirty third

anniversary of the islamic revolution present. would never stop enriching uranium iran insists its nuclear program is to serve its domestic energy needs but united states and its allies the e.u. and israel suspect tehran could be pursuing nuclear weapons they've been piling up sanctions against iran but i didn't warns that europe's planned on embargo will backfire political analysts coming was uneasy says washington and brussels want to weaken the islamic republic but fail to see the danger that actions are creating. they've taken into consideration that iran is going through election by elementary election probably the thing this is kind of backfire in terms of the population of iran against. america and the european big one very far because this is kind of an implication for the world economy especially this escalate to a military showdown and everything is going to be on the table all the inspection

by the nuclear agency. found that iran is actually weaponized there is a system there a point there are actually following the nuclear treaty agreement there is no violation to that and they ran said very clearly they're willing to cooperate with the international community but you have to wonder what really the international community at this point and what the american one at that point and as i said there's a lot of politics in it no matter what they saying coming at you no matter what they are just a fine or opening their facility there is some judgment already been rendered against you ran. for the first anniversary of the ousting of former president hosni mubarak egypt's activists have called for a general strike to ramp up the pressure against the ruling military council they want the council to step down immediately saying they're blocking reforms the

military said it won't accept any ultimatum. presidential elections. people fear they will remain in power beyond this thing. generals build true says egyptians have every right not to trust the military. people are unsure about whether i'll actually transfer power in jean and so far the military the ruling military council has yet to fulfill any of its promises that said since they came into power also just generally on the streets we're seeing massive human rights violations towards protesters with people expressing their freedom of speech and we've seeing excessive use of tear gas and cartouche they call it here which is birdshot and maiming protesters has been absolutely no reform of the police as it exemplified by the football disaster a few weeks ago which saw over seventy four people die so essentially we've seen very little reform since mubarak stepped down and people are a basically anxious that nothing will change.
