. russia's foreign minister says the libyan scenario of foreign intervention or risk being repeated in syria as a case is build against the assad regime to justify external military action. a fresh wave of downgrades sweeps across the struggling euro zone six nations get their debt ratings cut all while greece faces further bailout hurdles from the e.u. despite the latest harsh austerity plan. and russia's military predicts the west might decide on a strike against iran before summer as clouds gather over terror on following israel's accusation of the islamic state was behind monday's attacks on diplomatic personnel.
2:03 pm
eleven pm in moscow i matter as a good to have you with us here on r t our top story moscow says there's a significant risk the libyan scenario for intervention could soon be repeated in syria russian's foreign minister warned that a case is being built against the damascus regime that could be used to justify external military action. was speaking with journalist during his trip to the netherlands are piskun all reports. other foreign ministers also criticized the recent proposal needed by the west to put together the so-called group of friends of syria because according to this project such a group included members and representatives of the syrian opposition and not of the of thought which is according to moscow not a productive approach in the situation i said you know our office said that the
2:04 pm
international community has all we need quiet enough efforts to prevent the syrian opposition from having peaceful dialogue among the soon enough stories while russia stand still for peaceful communication for talks between the board signed off this conflict another issue touched upon by the russian foreign minister is the recent proposal by the arab league to deploy u.n. peacekeepers into syria and the foreign minister said that this proposal has to be dealt with quite a lot of attention because it is a complicated matter and the most important thing about it is that deploying any peacekeeping contingent into any country has to be supported by the kind of the receiving side he said meaning syria of course and in this case it means that it has to be confirmed and welcomed by the authorities and the
2:05 pm
opposition which brings us again to the matter of a desperate need of dialogue between both sides of this conflict and another matter is that if such a peacekeeping contingent would have been deployed in syria one of the tasks for it would be protecting civilians and we do remember another mission to protect civilians which was the only dia and just spired spiraled totally out of control kind of went for beyond that to. protecting civilians and basically. as the foreign minister said once again the many western countries just took one side of the conflict and that's what moscow doesn't want to see happening in syria syria's opposition says the restive city of homs has come under some of its heaviest shelling yet from government forces rebels claim around four hundred have been killed in the several days of an intense assault syrian authorities blame
2:06 pm
violence on armed terrorists operating in the city with al qaeda now adding to the increased turmoil there are fears that syria could soon plunge into sectarian chaos r.t. sara firth explains. the predominantly christian town of million lies in the syrian mountains yet even here in this hauntingly beautiful place and the signs of the pre-writing conflict that is tearing apart much of the country right now creeping in and the sense of foreboding hangs heavy locals tell us they don't travel out of this area much longer feel it's safe we speak to the nuns at the monastery here they tell us about the town's preservation of the ancient aramaic language and like their cherished tongue they hate the fine balance of religious groups in the country can be kept even in these difficult times we have been living here with all people regardless of their religion ethnicity in peace for a long time. back in the center and damascus is known as
2:07 pm
a melting pot of religions alloway sector a minority in the country but despite making up around just twelve percent of the taito population heloise have occupied elite positions in the government and the military for decades and now there are fears that resentment among the majority muslim sunni stack's could erupt the country that until this crisis breakout was religiously diverse as the tolerance now the can increasingly polarized the genuine fears that just where those divisions my laid his a sectarian tensions being further exploited have been staked by the emergence of an al qaeda video link the holy war illustrate the assad regime the violence is just not going to end we see it happening and iraq neighboring iraq sectarian violence that is catastrophic and nobody is reporting on that the reporting on syria and they're not focusing on the potential problems that syria could lead into
2:08 pm
another iraq on the streets through an increasingly desperate population has called for help in whatever form it comes as long as it stops the violence there's little time for them to think about long term sick carrion rests. well as many of them worrying about they survive will anyone who. we are with you to hear to say yes to anyone over the cell phone decision. yes i do on in syria right now the split still largely remains along pillis a collines that is concerned that is this increasingly bloody conflict continues it could turn into a sectarian one as well. damascus syria. for perspective on this i'm joined by patrick hayes reporter for online magazine spike so russia has warned of a repeat of the libyan style scenario in syria despite diplomatic efforts of moscow and beijing not to allow it so how likely do you think foreign intervention of
2:09 pm
a certain kind is. well obviously china and russia did veto the u.n. resolution. over a week ago now but support what we seem to be seeing is enough resolution being put on the cards being proposed by qatar and other countries and it does seem like it's the typical kind of situation which the west particularly good at which is that if they don't like the fact that resolution was vetoed in the first place they'll just put forward enough on till people. are satisfied then they get their will so you know i think you. see the french and british prime minister and now talking about having a summit about how they can help the free syrian army everything seems to be pointing towards a desire from the west to intervene in the libya style way again and again it's this kind of. posturing this is kind of grandstanding from the west who don't really have a strategy for what they would do you less just
2:10 pm
a desire to meddle to interfere to have a kind of knee jerk reaction. to basically trample another country's sovereignty and interfere in their business now that won't be good for the syrian people and i don't think that in terms of international relations in one room what kind of out of vision do you think there is among the west or just the metal that interfere for no reason whatsoever i mean certainly there is some kind of geo political reason behind it don't you think. yes absolutely but i don't think it's a thought out geopolitical strategy in the way you would have seen historically in fact i think you know in terms of the veto from china or russia you know there was this horrific reaction from the u.s. and other countries to the fact that there is this pito there's all this reaction from people like william hague saying this shows that china and russia have got blood on their hands except. you know they talk a lot as if countries aren't allowed to have strategic interests now you know if you know for example america and britain are basically the you know the window of
2:11 pm
amnesty international or some other humanitarian group there's a strong sense now that geopolitical interests of a country asserting its own interests in a particular region is seen to be a very negative thing actually i think what's far more dangerous some potentially far more destabilizing is this kind of humanitarian intervention which you see from the u.s. the west. britain france where which basically goes completely disrespects national sovereignty of countries and goes in and tries to have this kind of knee jerk reaction to events and often that can cause far more problems than it actually resolves the bloodshed has been going on for almost a year in syria both the government and opposition so far refusing to lay down their weapons do you think there is room for a dialogue. well i mean just. i'm not necessarily a big supporter of dialogue in this situation i do support the syrian people's
2:12 pm
right to self-determination and i do think in this situation may have to be free force rather than necessarily a dialogue. but at the same time. what's happening is this kind of intervention is really looking at their own either the removal of diplomats from syria. the desire to own the free syrian army from the west and to basically support them to give them kind of sectioned off training areas where they can develop and strong opposition apart from the kind of threat of assad's all suggest that you know the west is willing to have you know encourage any kind of dialogue or discourse and to alternately they want you know they've now polarized the situation they've now said you know. these evil we need to get rid of him they use those kind of terms evil you know the. overall bogeyman and you know the syrian people are vulnerable victims really to be protected by the west you know i think we saw the same thing with kidnapped three and it's always
2:13 pm
very striking that you know it was only two years ago that assad was seen as the great reformer in syria the west were basically queuing up to talk to him and they gave him dialogues now they've been in now he's completely been for straight as this absolute just absolute figure of evil needs to be kind of tackles and i think the west has this tendency to polarize the situations and again that can cause massive problems later on a wave in i say did in libya get rid of the leader as they did with gadhafi and then effectively little league a vacuum to it which allows for no space for struggle of the people of those countries to fight for freedom establish leadership to establish a direction for the country but instead what you get is this well as i said this kind of voids this vacuum which would. do it instead. and i think i know you and i've sorry i don't mean to interrupt but i want to get one more last question in before we run out of time in bahrain police have been using tear gas and grenades
2:14 pm
to disperse pro-democracy protests there yet no words of condemnation yet from their western allies why do you think they back some uprisings in some countries but not in others. well know it's that's very striking actually and we've seen throughout the arab spring that bahrain has always been that you know interests from from you know the u.s. in particular in those circumstances there's a desire not to focus on bahrain to just ignore it and i think is massively problematic and that's where you do see a certain assertion of western interests in a more traditional way that they pick and choose their battles you know i don't think there's any move to really kind of emphasize the struggle of the bahraini people or the suffering there and i think that really does bring out the double standard of the west let's focus on syria let's ignore bahrain and it's interesting of course when you look at the arab league it's well there are a lot of dictators you know who are part of the arab elite and now condemning syria
2:15 pm
they're queuing up to condemn assad and to call for him to leave and surpass new resolutions and actually what you see a lot of the time are these countries these dictators just trying to detract attention away from the fact that you know often they can be just as bad when they are in their treatment. all of the people of their countries but they want to cozy up to the west be seen to be doing the right thing and just hope that they can detract attention away from their own situation so they don't have similar uprisings their double struck standards in general with the situation very striking and it's amazing just how quiet the media and also the west can be about them and how they just when it comes to bahrain they just don't want to talk about it and i think that's very revealing and i think we should all bear in mind also when we're looking at the syrian conflict all right we have to leave it there patrick a reporter for our line magazine spiked experience. thank you. the debt ridden e.u. has suffered another blow from ratings agencies moody's has downgraded the debt

already stole them. as international pressure on iran is mounting russia's military has assessed the probability of a western strike against the islamic republic is being high concerns of pending military action grew after israel blamed tehran for two bomb attacks on its diplomatic staff monday and today's blasts in bangkok are he's peter all over as more. the chief of staff of the russian armed forces said on tuesday that he thinks a plan for a western attack on iran could be in place by the summer of this year and he's basing that statement on the fact that since the arab spring started a year ago russia has been monitoring the area of the wider middle east very closely enough to looking at the findings from that monitoring this is what he's come up with now and this comes just a day after two israeli diplomats were targeted with car bombs in the capitals of
2:21 pm
georgia and india now the bomb in georgia was able to be defused however in india that car bomb exploded very very close to the residence of the prime minister of india and injured several people now israel was very very quick to point the finger of blame for those attacks at teheran despite terror experts looking at the findings and coming up with saying well there's pretty much no evidence that was behind those attacks this is all really part of the ongoing blame game between tell of the terror and the iranians claim that the israelis have been behind a two year campaign of assassinations on their nuclear scientists well on tuesday in bangkok what we've seen is a rainy unmanned taken into custody by police after an explosion two explosions in bangkok injured several people there now it's really media very very quick to point the finger of terror towards that iranian man who's being detained there so this is
2:22 pm
all part of as i say a blame game that's ongoing between tel of eve and terror on. in the next hour we hear about the pitfalls of the u.s. approach to dealing with iran from brian becker a member of the antiwar answer coalition here's a little bit of his interview coming up. the u.s. says they're not carrying out regime change but in fact everyone who is watching knows that indeed is the u.s. policy to create pressure on iran carry out overt operate covert operations economic sanctions and now these new sanctions are not really even a like the old saying they are saying to the rest of the world if you dare do business with iran central bank if you buy iranian oil which constitutes half of iran's g.n.p. if you have any business with iran whatsoever you will not have access to american banks to american corporations to the american market this is in fact a blockade. russia's
