and bad but is really hurting this nation terribly the revolution in tunisia started with one fruit seller the french revolution started with one girl talking you know the price of bread going up and talk about john brown one individual starting the the revolution back in the u.s. in that time you know you talk about the financial crimes you know to contrast with say asia and middle east north africa the more information they got the more upset they became you know the satellite photos and to nancy a of how the top one percent was living got everyone upset in the u.s. however the more information they get the more docile they become you know julian assange or wiki leaks giving information makes people want to just lie down and cuddle up into a fetal position and hope it all goes away isn't there again is it drugs in the water is it obesity is it too much football what's is it d.f. aleutian. americans doubt i know

a lot of republicans don't believe in evolution but do they believe india evolution because it appears as though the mindset of the average american is devolving there are a number of things going on that revolve around the question of authority and legitimacy and especially the news media and you know i it personally i consider myself allergic to conspiracy theories and i don't think that there is a media conspiracy to keep the american people ignorant but they're certainly doing a terrible job of reporting you wonder why the call thought leaders in places like the wall street journal and the new york times have they haven't reacted at all to the shenanigans going on with the new york state attorney general and the taskforce for mortgage fraud and the smoke screen at the department of justice they're just not paying attention so you know we're seeing some kind of an epoch

a failure of people in charge if it's like you know control fraud itself which is using accounting. by people who run things namely people who run banks and the people who regulate them and the whole idea that you are a legitimate vested authority and people expect you to be discharging your duties and doing things properly but yet you're not doing it and you know there's kind of an equivalent to that in the news media. so we're getting kind of a control fraught of news too but you know it seems to me to be more a matter of incompetence malice and in the case of the news media a-k. don't buy into the conspiracy theories that are out there however a cording to a recent survey people who watch fox news are less informed than people who watch no news so clearly the fox pay paul. you know that if you

have a population that is being dumbed down by purposefully inflating the debate with lies deception and fraud that's a that's a population that you can steer by the nose in any direction you want to go ok now chris hedges believes that part of the reason for the national defense authorization act is that the banks are going to collapse and that bankers don't trust the police to maintain order so they want to give the military some boosted powers in the united states because they see this thing collapsing and they want protection from the mob your thoughts chris is a very intelligent guy and very experienced as a war correspondent and you know i think that he's a voice that we ought to pay attention to i would imagine the problem a little differently you know i think that there's just kind of a general level of nervousness throughout the whole culture that it's not just the

bankers but it's really everybody in any kind of authority is so nervous about about the failures that they have brought about that you know they they really no longer trust the system to keep on running it and you know they're taking extraordinary measures in regard to your previous statement about fox news when i was a young newspaper reporter i investigated religious cults and political cults and one of the things that impressed me tremendously was how a group of people could simply subscribe to a bundle of ideas or shall we say programming and then you know there are a whole mental program was then set and they didn't really have to review any of their beliefs and i think that that's happened to a tremendous extent now and in our culture right so you've got bill o'reilly is more like charles manson than edward. armorel now let's talk about something you're

very keen to write about and talk about over the years peak resources and i want to ask you is there any connection between the curtailment of civil liberties in the us and this peak resource the peak oil peak water etc well there certainly is a connection between all of these enormous looming issues the failure of capital finance the failure of civil order and the faith that we can run a civil society and the availability of the vital resources that we need to have an economy that continues to grow and produce the ability to do things like service debt so yes that you know these things are all intimately connected and they all end up read down being into the question of whether or not this is a society that has enough confidence that it will be able to keep going and carrying this project of civilization into the future right now we're not too sure

about that james council has another curious thing there's a washington post show that with a democrat novice the anti-war movement made up mostly of democrats has declined drastically they are apparently fine with the wars while they team up while their team is en subtle spake how what's that all about it probably again the question of authority you know if you identify yourself as a democrat or a progressive and your party is carrying out the wars and doing it in a way that you know there's no draft so people aren't being dragged off to you know against their will they're volunteering and in fact it's really kind of a job center for that disappearing cohort of young men especially you know who who need to work with their hands and can't go to work in a factory or do some kind of you know or or any longer you know build houses or do other construction jobs so you know they work with their hands killer. people in

other lands so you know probably it's regarded as a kind of a jobs program right well and of course when they go to these wars they often lose their hands and then goldman sachs creates hand come out of times and collateralized futures contracts they trade with other banks and they profit in another way on the death and misery of poor u.s. servicemen sent to do goldman sachs dirty work ok and there's another war the ongoing financial war and then once again frankly the democratic voters don't mind financial crimes because their guy obama is in office so somehow like i listen to bill maher on h.b.o. no matter what finance a crime is committed he repairs the same stupidity that comes out of white house about how the bailouts are profitable how the auto companies are doing fantastically well and so these liberal so-called just because they have their guy in office they don't seem better still to finance a crime is what is it just financial illiteracy on that huffington post side of the

aisle i don't think so and i think it is certainly all parts of the political spectrum thomas frank wrote a book a few years ago called what's the matter with kansas and the basic point of his book was why do voters get snookered by political parties into voting against their own interests but the situation has changed now a few years later and what we're seeing is something a lot worse than that what we're seeing is now a comprehensive failure of leadership and not just in politics which is the most visible kind of leadership but comprehensively through american life and to some extent western life you know a failure of leadership in politics business in the media you know in the clergy. in education at every level and that makes for a very. nervous society all right james howard kunstler we're out of time. thank so

eh. welcome to the low to show we look at the real headlines with none of the mercy and we're going to live out of washington d.c. so i'm going to speak to glenn greenwald about whether it's the media is pushing the war the wrong narrative even more than the government and china's v.p. is in the u.s. for a visit so what's on the agenda and what does it say for the relationship between the two countries and also a new pew study shows that one in a voter records are flawed but how do we get past the myth that this is the sign of massive voter fraud and instead focus on our outdated paper based system of

registration we're not all that more fair not including a dozen happy hour but first let's take a look what the mainstream media has decided to this. well it's another day in the political horse race of the g.o.p. race and what do you know there are two new polls for the mainstream media to cover obsessive fully. rick santorum is now on top in two brand new major national polls out there this morning underfunded and outmanned two new polls show that rick santorum is now tied with mitt romney in the republican race for the white house the back and forth race for the republican nomination is all tied up in the polls right now a dead heat between mitt romney and rick santorum in recent weeks he's really gaining momentum and now in a statistical dead heat with mitt romney that's right according to this hugh research center poll is going to look at that right now he leads by two percentage points in terms pulling ahead of mitt romney in two national polls and riding

a double digit surge into a dead heat with the former governor rick santorum is gaining ground and confidence this is the momentum that he built by these wins just we can go today in colorado minnesota and missouri. now as do. definitely interesting to look at the resurgence if you can even call it that of rick santorum especially relative to the entire race to the white house right the consistent proof that republican voters really are not that stoked on mitt romney but at the end of the day are they still going to go with mitt is this just another flavor of the month episode like we saw with bachmann and cain and gingrich before now i think that those are valid questions and go ahead spend a few minutes talking about it but again do we need the nonstop around the clock santorum mania to take place at a certain point you just want to scream at the top your lungs tell these people for the love of god to give it a rest especially when there are so many other things going on in the world and if we're going to spend countless hours looking at polls and statistics why not branch

out a little bit why not look at other stats that come out on a daily basis that will tell you about widespread systemic problems and abuses within our country i want to give you one good example today that i've really seen covered anywhere else and we've known for a while now the n.y.p.d. has a bit of a stop and frisk problem my problem i mean that there is an obscene amount of people who are being stopped and frisked in new york and there's a lot of evidence of points to clear racial bias and the majority the time what they end up getting people for is maybe having small amount of marijuana if anything not stopping violent crimes from happening so in the years since two thousand and four when this program began the n.y.c. l.-u. says that more than four million people have been stopped in two thousand and ten the n.y.p.d. broke their all time high record of stop and frisks with six hundred one thousand and fifty five stops but guess what new data is out for two thousand and eleven and attorneys out that they've broken their own record yet again they would gotham as

described best as another champion season so here's the big number for you in two thousand and eleven the n.y.p.d. stopped six hundred eighty four thousand three hundred and thirty people on the street turns out only twelve percent of those were arrested or received a summons the rest were all released. now if you want proof of the racial bias i'm going to give you the breakdown for the last two years in two thousand and ten about eighty four percent of those stopped by police are black or latino while only about nine percent of those people stopped are white last year we saw the same old thing eighty seven percent were black or latino and nine percent were white and i say it's a pretty clear sign that there is discrimination at work here that innocent people are being harassed that there is a massive problem seems like a number of city officials in new york agree with me they've asked the federal government to launch a probe because they feel that thousands of young people are being criminalized and the mainstream media where they've been on this issue well let's just say they've been steering clear of it ignoring it acting like it does not even exist now you

might try to claim that this is too localized of a problem for the national media to be covering but come on you guys you know the on a daily basis on this show we point out how d.c. and new york oriented the national mainstream media is they live in a bubble they prioritize everything that happens within this little bubble of new york and d.c. over what's going on in the rest of the country technically the stop and frisk issue fits into the bubble but who are we kidding right the bubble only includes government officials media leaves not the rest of us not the thousands of people living in muslim communities that have been targeted by the n.y.p.d. for their religious beliefs and then monitor it with the help of the cia mind you and certainly not the hundreds of thousands of minorities that are being harassed and stopped by the police and treated like criminals just for walking down the street and i'm not saying that this policy doesn't play a role that we don't have a need for a vigilant police force but let's not let our judgment in our understanding of the importance of the value of civil liberties to be clouded by some kind of fear that

is a police weren't great the new records every year and how many people they stop and frisk the world would be a much more dangerous place because the truth is the numbers aren't there to back it up but back to the point here this is exactly the kind of story the kind of statistics and members of the mainstream media choose. as to miss. all right so we've been covering the incessant cheerleading for war against iran pretty extensively on the show drawing comparisons with the buildup to war with iraq threats of weapons of mass destruction al qaeda and how could we forget the u.s. intelligence community saying that iran now poses the number one terror threat against the united states and it seems that public opinion might be swaying thanks to that fear mongering recent poll from the hill shows that amongst their respondents nearly half of all likely voters believe that the u.s. should be willing to use military force to prevent iran from obtaining

program or not but why in that case you know if the drumbeating specifically coming from the media a lot of the time is surrounding iran's nuclear program do people still buy it haven't we learned from iraq you know don't we have enough examples there that where you start to get a little bit skeptical. but the things that's being done and in terms of the propaganda campaign is there's a sense of anger because everybody knows including them the big you have a good program in the sense that they're trying to develop nuclear energy which everybody agrees is that absolute right to do and say other times that we need. to do is their task about nuclear program and in part of that that's a nuclear weapons program in part that it's beyond dispute that they actually developing nuclear weapons even though. there's an official as an intelligence official agency has said that we have no evidence whatsoever that it is as actually decided even to develop
