they are being biased in the letter to eric holder he said the following the same pattern as immersion when media outlets ongoing study of new hires and division in the divisions other ten components and the seven sections analyzed so far all seventy nine hires had quote far left credentials these were likely either obvious on their resumes or reasonably discoverable through a quick internet search noticeably absent were new employees with resumes very obvious conservative or neutral ideological credentials now it's also know that the media outlet that has signed cites in this letter here is pajamas media a conservative operation headlines on the web site kissing assad's ass and celebrate black history month slap a leftist author of the report because it was part of the bush era civil rights department with its hiring practices were breaking the law so we have enough most credible source the d.o.j. responded to represent of smith and the letter was obtained by mother jones and the response they outline their hiring practices a career attorney is in charge of all hiring rather than political and appoint
6:49 pm
appointees excuse me as was the case under the bush administration internet searches of candidates aren't allowed to reduce the chance of bias now that obviously rules out reps missed suggestion of a google search to expose the radical leftist tendencies of the qualifiers and letter also of the year olds that hires can only be overruled by the head of the civil rights division a political appointee with a written statement why don't more same world representative smith would be trouble that the d.o.j. isn't able to find more qualified conservative civil rights attorneys but i think that we all know it's not a sane world right in fact that we're wrote about this morning in mother jones is pretty interesting to hear smith complaining about hiring bias in the first place high requirements have long been the bane of the conservative movement existence after all they're the ones who railed against affirmative action the very notion that one person would be hired based on age race or ideological consideration over somebody with equal qualifications being antithetical to the principles of a. well apparently not when it comes to hiring conservatives for jobs that they're
6:50 pm
simply not qualified for in that case let's have affirmative action as long as that means that they got the jobs and not the women or the minorities so who are complaining of the most qualified civil rights attorneys wearing conservative rather and then wondering why that's the case we award representative lamar smith tonight still time award. are you guys have time for a happy hour and joining me this evening lauren lyster host of the capital account here on r t and j.p. for air and senior communications strategist with new media strategies hey guys i mean we have a valentine's day happy valentine's day ok larry i mean you know everyone's talking about gingrich and santorum and mitt romney and i was tell you how they obsess about it on the media but sometimes the way they choose to describe these people
6:51 pm
and i guess you could say compare these candidates to give a little over the top so listen to this clip from morning joe today. you get the idea. newt gingrich sat alone is in his room. eating candy bars reading history rick santorum you get the idea of a bunch of brothers and they beat him because tormes that tough guy when he gets attacked doesn't get angry he just looks at mitt and you see it on the stage he's a really. i mean really if you're oh really and when i asked you think back i was going to beat up a bunch of guys i don't worry i was grown up it's like the monkeys sergei's you think they're waging jihad against them he's like being them his teeth are really clenched all the time he's kind of always imitating i think clint eastwood in that way so i mean he might have you know if you go to the patient look to me i mean maybe maybe he he was listening to when he talks about iranian scientists because in that regard it sounds like rick santorum is
6:52 pm
a little darley when he talks about how sas aims great i think the u.s. needs to send that message you're intolerant ok but do we think that gingrich is sitting in a room eating candy and that when i read actually you. and i can actually i don't know marilyn's his family is quite the ladies' man so i don't know when we doing that with his you know next to him if you. know nancy grace. i wish that we could still play our devilish dance for the night but she all she does is build up these cases and i think often just scare people and spread a lot of misinformation and like she basically made the entire country think that casey anthony was guilty and now with what he's saying about whitney houston. i'd like to know who was around her who if anyone gave her drugs following alcohol and drugs and who let her slip or pushed her underneath that water. i mean she's already saying that somebody pushed her underneath the water but are you
6:53 pm
surprised are you kidding she wants this to be her next big story casey anthony put her ratings through the roof i think they put a gel lens ratings through the roof if you were going for the next case and michael jackson is probably sweating about now let's admit it well compared to casey anthony i mean this could be the next big thing but the thing is the police already said that she did not you know she didn't drown she was found about that not an issue for nancy grace but little details like that the celebrity news coverage has always eluded me i've never quite understood why why we become so fascinated with what happens to the celebrities after their deaths i mean they're good singers what do i want to know about their i call into her life and i know it well they're in line kind of with us actually right after their death like let them die in peace for a minute before you start talking about the drugs that are already of all it's around you you raise the price of their albums thirty minutes after they actually got into the court fine fine i'll come down this road with you all pretend i actually care no i'm totally curious who did push her under the water. and let me into the
6:54 pm
ratings for the i want to show you what i can. let's get it through you know there's been a lot of debates these days over contraception and birth control here's a little bit from mitch mcconnell. legislation that would ban any group that had just a quote moral objection not just a religious group but just to any group that had a moral objection to that would would you be willing to push that in the. yeah you know if we end up having to try to overcome the president's opposition by legislation of course i'd be happy to support it. all right so not just you know religious organization the catholic church doesn't have to do it but now if anybody does ation of the boss morally objects to something he doesn't have to provide you with insurance that's crazy i think that there will for the real compromise here the real ideal thing the thing on which we can all agree is that health insurance
6:55 pm
should not be tethered to employment and that is that that is the absolute worst way to go about it because if you get fired from the job if you get laid off you can't bring that insurance with you so in also it destroys the i didn't i didn't want you to state your case on health care well no i mean way no but the important thing i mean i do have i do know that it's coming out with some guy that you know shouldn't you be able to have the guarantee that you can have health insurance from your company so it's not just up to some of the whim of some boss want to feel what i like about this is it's religious or moral objections so i can just see any boss being like ok let me see the price tag for all of these things ok i got a moral objection to that surgery too expensive got a moral objection to that i mean it was a really creative way to like corporations pick and choose what they want to do i hear what you're saying but at what point do you stop i mean you're talking about a cadillac health care plan right that's that's the ideal it's got everything in it right ok so they don't force me to give people dental readings actually so i mean. we're going to going to go all the way through and say ok everything is permissible
6:56 pm
i mean people are going to want to cut costs somewhere but i don't think that that's where the religious objections come up and i do think that once we're talking about you know forcing religious employers versus regular employers to do certain things i mean if we're talking about somebody who runs a small business for instance and employs the rest of his family not a religious organization but this person is a religious person they should be forced to purchase something that they don't that they don't agree with you know in terms of moral i don't understand why there were even be any connection i just i don't want my employer to know anything about my health care i don't want them to have any. hand in it if they are paying for my health care insurance i should be it well i think you buy at the end eventually and you're invited on the bracket insurance company which will not have you so much power and that should be and you almost agree with me and so you know we'll get a fist bump out of it i mean you know which isn't really. debated topic now shoot we're running out of time so i think we're going to skip once we discovered had the sports illustrated and and who is on the cover i think we have
6:57 pm
a clip of this girl first time in dance. i am all right there she is on the cover everyone always looks for is to the swimsuit issue every year but what has those. katie bottoms and you and i you know where one of you wanted me to wear one and i objected on principle because it's one of the rules yeah i should do in order to leave a little bit to the imagination it's like a fine and sexy if it's a swimsuit edition i mean you know there really is no imagination how emissary would there is a scene with playboy let along for a month everything is vague so some say oh we're going to win it this segment is really just about having been able to show the show that clip avi that you have admitted to having arrived on sorry guys you got to wrap it up thanks for joining me that's it i'd say oh thanks for joining in make sure we come back tomorrow kevin glassman town halls and you joining us for happy hour in the meantime don't forget

first. it is absolutely vital that we have a strong relationship with china. well one moment we adore them the next we are bashing them with every sharp word we've got love them or hate him the fact is the us needs china support will show you the schizo frantic nature of us rhetoric. and here is a riddle for you if the us says the war in iraq is over then why is the pentagon wanting to three billion dollars to fund operations in the country this year so was the troop withdrawal a ruse well explore. and back here at home to tell the truth or not to tell the
7:01 pm
truth they could cost you a campaign is president obama really willing to lie his nose grow a little white lie to win reelection or will a truth squad of volunteers rally support. it's tuesday february fourteenth happy valentine's day at seven pm in washington d.c. i'm liz wall and you're watching r t. o eight meeting of the minds here in washington today as president obama meets with the man slated to be the next president of china here is china's vice president xi jinping meeting with president obama this afternoon he's also planning to head to iowa and the west coast during his time here in the u.s. now while no major breakthroughs are expected the visit comes as tensions rise between the two countries and we thought it would be a good time to take
7:02 pm
a closer look at the relationship between the u.s. and china it's oftentimes a confusing one mixed with filled with mixed signals artie's christine for our reports. it was me let's me know that age old question is one china at least has every right to ask for guarding its relationship with the united states just in the last three years china has been wined and dined here and. praised and envied for its ability to do whatever it wants to right now china the government can disconnect parts of its internet in the case of war we need to have that here too the chinese pay zero capital gains tax folks in congress are also going to get a chance to decide later. in the month whether our construction workers should sit around doing nothing while china builds the best railroads the best schools the best airports. in the world but it turns out those chocolate covered compliments
7:03 pm
seem to come just as frequently as those cold hearted criticisms from human rights to currency devaluation to trade we finally need to confront the issue of trade with china all too often china's been competing in a way that's tilting the playing field and is unfair to u.s. work and it's not just the president himself those hoping to take his job also tend to flip flop on china these guys around for us and and and and and looking for ways to. to work to harness china doesn't want to various they want to see has succeeded thrive so we can buy more chinese products ivan eland senior fellow at the independent institute says the paradox transcends the rhetoric we borrow a lot of money from china too so it's quite a curious thing that we're really borrowing money to pay for defending other countries from china right i mean that's what really doing the mixed messages are reaching the masses as well in a recent gallup poll by fifty two percent to thirty two percent americans were more
7:04 pm
likely to name china than the united states as the leading economic power in the world today even though it's not however in a separate survey when asked which country represents the greatest danger china came in second only after iran in life and love there appears to be a fine line between resentment and respect i want to beat china i want to go to war with china and make america the most attractive place in the world to do business if you look at china they're in a very different such as they say for their own retirement security they don't have the f.t.c. they don't have the modern welfare state and china's growing it's that growth and the sharing is caring relationship that has bound these countries in this holy union this trade and economic interdependence with china is really a defining factor and perhaps like most relationships there's nothing simple. about the one between the u.s.
7:05 pm
and china there are disagreements about who gets to lead when how to spend the money and how to raise the children but the fact is this relationship is one that's going to be around for generations to come in washington christine r.t. . well now to talk more about this apparent love hate relationship between china and the u.s. i spoke with former reagan administration official paul craig roberts earlier take a look. at the main difficulty with the united states chinese relationship is the neoconservative idiology of american change enemy so instead of just accepting an economic relationship. it gets it gets mixed up with the superpowers drive to be the controlling influence in the world and so that sort of takes the economic issue out of its context and introduces an
7:06 pm
issue of rivalry and that's a real problem when it comes from this neoconservative. idiology the american judge in every now that it is election year we've seen a lot of ads he china rhetoric but it gets kind of confusing because we do see candidates from michele bachmann to newt gingrich touting some of the aspects of china that make it more desirable to do business there and create more jobs why is there this contradiction. well you see newt gingrich probably. wants to cut the minimum wage drive down wages and he talked about having school children playing the tallest in the in the interest groups and the whole notion of sort of the republican right wing is that. rewards to labor stand in the way of progress in economic development well because the wages in china are far
7:07 pm
below the american level and that explains the job to help children which as so greatly benefited the chinese development you know with american firms take their technology and capital business don't go to chatter and they build factories to produce there to bring back good so that the chinese gain all that knowledge and so in this sense the american corporations have been a huge boon to the development of the chinese economy. and speaking of labor and trade i want to play you for you paul this michigan senate campaign commercial that was played during the super bowl and it's starting some controversy take a listen. thank you michigan senator debbie spend it now debbie spend so much emotion money you borrow more and more from us your economy very weak. get very good we take your job thank you have you spend it now i think this race
7:08 pm
for u.s. senate is between debbie spend it now and can't spend it and i'm spending not puckster and i approve this message. now that a candidate is taking some heat now for possible racial claims that there is some racial bias and this and this car show but i want to get your reaction on this is there any truth to this ad can kite china be blamed for job losses in the u.s. is that a fair accusation no not really the people who make that i'm referring to the chinese peg of its currency to the dump and they claim the chinese currency is worth more because when china biggest currency to double a purpose it was to show that its currency was as good as the day it was a communist country trying to get into a new game and that's why this turns now the message that we just saw is highly misleading because it's not so much the chinese goods that are coming into america
7:09 pm
it's the goodness of american transnational corporations who now produce all sure and bring their goods back here so the real the real blame lies not in china but only american firms who are all suring their production for the american market you see this doesn't come out stead they blame china but at least fan the imports from china are goods produced by american firms in china in order to sell here and they do it because the lower labor cost means more profits for the shareholders of american firms and greater performance bonuses for the management so when you blame china you really are the flecked in the attention all of the rules problem which is the jobs all sure i was so you're saying that the
7:10 pm
blame should really be focused on these corporations that are sending the jobs overseas and of course they're doing that because it's more. fiscally. profitable for them to do so they've abandoned the american workforce for the sake of their performance bonuses and capital gains for their shareholders and that's what the real problem is right there you say until and until the chinese to change their mind and open their own economy to western capitalist was a possible so it's a relatively new thing and it's really the fault of the american firms interesting well so i want to bring up another point the obama administration has announced this military shift from the middle east to china especially as china's influence is growing in that region i mean how can we expect china or can we expect china to remain guarded and skeptical of the u.s.
7:11 pm
amid this new military strategy. well that's what i was referring to earlier this rivalry that the united states feels it's trying to prevent china's rapid rise because it doesn't want to have anyone challenging its position in the world and that then explains so much of what's going on and explains the attacks on iran because china gets twenty percent of its all from iran so if you can interfere with china's independent access to oil you can slow them down that's the reason that my opinion for the whole attack on libya was to disrupt china from its all investments is to libya and so when you take that type of attitude and you start applying it to a rise in country you're going to create animosity you're going to create troubles and but the troubles seem to be coming out of this neoconservative idiology of american heads enemy that doesn't seem to be china. that is raising the stakes like
7:12 pm
this it's washington. now i know paul so this visit it's the first visit of this with president obama he's slated to be the next leader of china and amid all these conflicts between the two countries how far do you expect this to go in terms of mending the relationships between the two countries and making progress in that area. with the chinese will this to develop into the woman external trade. and i would imagine that that would be made clear to all and so then the it comes back to the americans what will divert. from at this rise or will they try to block it. in the 1930's with japan was rising power they tried to block restricted japanese access to energy.
7:13 pm
and try to travel with the resources that they needed so i don't really know what will happen in the united states whether they go sad all this world or gentlemen it's too expensive and i hear well i guess we show way and the great to have you on the show as always that was former reagan administration official dr paul craig roberts. also had an hour to the war in iraq is over but that's not stopping the pentagon from hemorrhaging money into the country so it was a withdrawal all for show that story next.
7:14 pm
welcome to the capital account i'm lori mr. pepper spray that just burns your eyes right right i mean it's like a derivative of actual pepper it's a food product essentially. this is much stronger than anything it's the bio absolutely thousands of times and stronger than any kind of variable ever put in your. well president obama has unveiled the department of defense's new budget and among the military splurge is nearly three billion dollars for a war we're supposedly not fighting now this is supposed to go toward what's called post operation new dawn in iraq what exactly is part of that operation though is
7:15 pm
unclear so months after the president announces the end of the war in iraq is this the mysterious beginning of something else or earlier i spoke with retired army colonel douglas macgregor the billions being spent in a country where the war was declared over i asked him how this adds up here's what he had to say. well there are several things that contribute to this outcome first of all there's washington which lives in a state of denial and the denial is that iraq has been a strategic disaster for the united states that iran and not the united states is the dominant influence in baghdad so that's the first thing there's a desire to somehow or another maintain this enormous presence in the face of this reality as compensation to the failure of the policy secondly. there is this mistaken belief that this can be a listening station and intelligence complex a place where we can gather information not just on iraq but on iranian intentions
7:16 pm
and unfortunately that really doesn't hold up to historical analysis of the larger and the more obvious your embassy the less you usually learn that's not how to gather intelligence now this is this is being called post operation it new dawn but it is very unclear as to what exactly this operation intel so i mean how do you suspect these funds will be used three billion dollars i think the biggest single concern at this point is to maintain iraq strangely enough as an outlet for the u.s. defense industry it's a place where the people in the meat in the military defense industries think they can sell their wares so this embassy's job is to go out there and ensure these contracts or are reached and utilized and do you know money is made for the defense industry that needs to sell its wares overseas now. that the wars both in iraq and afghanistan wind down make the argument that we're kind of leaving both wars without a clear victory i mean so did we have a clear victory there on
7:17 pm
a vigorous defeat. exactly that certainly a lot of people share that view point does this suggest that there is in fact a lot more work to be done and iraq and the usa is going to stay to stay behind and try to maintain their present lot of through the neo cons that brought us is who are anxious to do that but the answer is no we need to get completely out we need to focus internally in the united states on our own problems we're on the verge of a very serious fiscal crisis lots of people are pointing to it i would expect a huge economic downturn next year and over the next two years as things here are going to look a lot like greece we don't have time for this we can't afford it and we don't need to be there and with billions of dollars being funneled into iraq what does this suggest about u.s. involvement there does it suggest that we are not ready to leave the well as i said we will continue to try and buy influence by information.
