and outreach coordinator for united republic he's also a writer for united republic's new blog report thanks so much for joining us tonight what do you think of this plan i mean it's kind of an interesting development right it's just one guy that's doing it just like the one guy that decided to run for congress but an occupy wall street pac i think it's really interesting it seems like this occupier down alabama is trying to do is trying to use the campaign finance system short sort of i guess you say then mr super pac i'm going to raise all this money we're going to support candidates who want to reform the campaign finances those that are kind of sort of trying to utilize sort of the weapons of the system against itself now it's sort of interesting in this is that they want to support people like elizabeth warren who actually sworn off super pacs were saying along with their opponent scott brown that they don't want to protect supporting them so i think this will be a dilemma the occupiers faces you know should we be using the sort of tools of the system against it or should we just be staying away from this sort of trying to reform the system in other ways that are a little cleaner or do you have an opinion on it do you think that this makes them

look like hypocrites if they choose to work within the system but you know like you said there's always that argument is do you work within it to destroy it from within and reform it from within or from the outside or one of the those i guess the occupy visit doesn't have lead. you know they're not going to take advice from me to sail or anyone else but you know what i would suggest is maybe back away from the super pacs from the sort of these big sort of monstrosities a lot of people do a limited spending you know let's not get to that gave it to where everyone's playing it you know rather you can form a normal political action committee and raise that certain amount of money for candidates you can donate directly to candidates you can do sort of political ads and worry that it doesn't in a certain involve political action committees and number of options that you can utilize to sort of change the political system without using the super pacs and i would definitely suggest the utilize those before going to them were they'll definitely be outspent i mean super pacs you know they're they can take unlimited donations from unions or corporations now to sort of do what they're doing and or from rich individuals and honestly they'll be outgunned any way they try if you super pacs although i guess you could say that it could be interesting if you saw

some ads out there that weren't just supporting a certain politician or a certain candidate but that we're taking on the whole system that is taking on both parties that really had some kind of occupy rhetoric behind and that you didn't really have somebody to point at and say like only use that when it's when it's to your advantage now did you catch the top of our show their night we were talking about maybe the irony of rick santorum releasing all of his tax returns to try to prove to people that he's really the every guy compared to mitt romney and what do you think about that right when at a time like this this is a guy who is still a millionaire but he's supposed to be the poorer candidate the more normal one you know i think that's really fast. you can actually make a lot of really great people lot of good conservatives who like the idea of what we write we're writing our public report or what we're doing but at the same time you saw rick santorum standing up there talking as most like an average guy but the person who introduced him was a guy named foster friess to obviously get

a little infamous today from some comments he made about he was going to get into that later and you know really this is a super rich rich guy who's financing rick santorum super pac is basically escalating in high up in this presidential race. that's the only reason rick santorum is really having any success right now is because it's basically being bankrolled by one guy and a handful of other guys and you know at the same time your show covered him he's making you know ten times the media more than ten times the median income of the american family they're saying he's the average joe i mean maybe in the republican race at this point you know it would be between him and ron paul being the i guess the average joes versus like the gingrich and the romney but you know if anything i think this speaks to how sort of our system has been itself towards the ultra rich to where you know maybe ten years from now you and i will be talking about multimillionaires representing the average joe versus you know the multibillionaires rather than talking about someone like santorum who are six hundred thousand dollars a year and it should be noted that part of santorum is the earnings that are in those years was flacking for a number of corporations very in for using his political connections so he was

doing you know a lot of the lobbying but not legally lobbying the sorts of things so you know honestly i think it's a really really sad reflection on sort of how the political debate has turned in this country but do you think there is any way back to think that we can still pull it back and the average joe actually can still run in a political election you know i was also talking about that the numbers from the center for responsive politics and they're showing that half of the members of congress are worth at least a million dollars have there i think is worth seven hundred million dollars they think you know a range there but is it only going to keep trending in that direction or could maybe something like occupy try to change it you know that's what it will and so it will and i think you know occupiers tea partiers conservatives liberals progressives moderates whatever i think all of us have an interest in reversing the system right now because the way that we're going is basically we're in a death spiral you know we have the democrats and republicans and or super pacs and divorcing unlimited corporate contributions and the union contributions and other big special interest groups and we're going to we're going to revert to a system where we have one of us people ruling us in a class of people you know living under that and so right now i feel like you know twenty is really

a twilight year you know we need to have movements like the occupy that we need to have tea parties are sympathetic to this message of getting big money out of politics to really right now make a big fuss about this you know because we might not be able to turn back from this i mean there are many moments in history where you just. the end you know that if you don't do something now that you know catastrophic things are good and i think that's the moment of america's entering right now why don't i think it's an interesting time even from. new organizations like the one that you're working for right where suddenly everybody is hopping on board this idea that money is corrupting the political system and you know what's one story that really stuck out to you the part of this week just for you was the perfect and i guess the example of the worst of the worst of how our system works. you know the interim thing really really bugs me in the sense that there's a guy who can who can leave washington. as a senator and peddle as influence on behalf of all these other people and then he can go around telling his working class credentials and he can get a billionaire financier to run as sort of a can compete with the sort of the romneys of the gingrich's of the world and he

continues and continues to sort of tell him self as sort of a working class hero for the people and it's exemplified through every story that we're seeing now in the mainstream media i mean even with even with a number of social issues i mean i mean access to birth control is a class issue to a large extent and like i said before i think that you know what's happening in america right now is that people in the occupy movement people in the ninety percent whether tea parties or occupiers are waking up and saying this is that isn't working for them and we really have to do something to fix it right now you know that's why i hope everyone joins us enjoy other groups that are trying to combat this problem all right that will thanks so much for joining us tonight and i think it's worth pointing out seventy three reporting on it because as i mentioned the rest of them just seem to kind of give it up and they think that it's normal and that's the way things work i disagree i think change and think things. ok guys so i want to ask you a question and you've heard of a pilot fish you know that's the first thing that comes to mind is maybe a bass or

would completely outlaw abortion and mandate up to life in prison for those who purposefully terminate a pregnancy and this ban includes cases of rape incest or saving the life of the mother and oklahoma lawmakers are one step closer to passing the personhood act as it's passed through their senate now that's the bill that gives rights to an individual embryo at the moment of conception so effectively it outlaws birth control and on the topic of birth control carol i said i hosted as chair of the house oversight and government reform committee hearing about religious freedom versus health insurance having to cover contraception but hearing however included no women on the panel not even a single person who disagreed with the catholic church and then of course there was this really lovely statement from the billionaire backer of rick santorum campaign on m.s.n. we see today. i get such a chuckle when these things come out here we have millions of our fellow americans unemployed we have a job a scam speen set up and central in latin america which rick has been warning about

know and as a nation we are still in broiled in wars abroad our economy is still in very very rough shape to be targeting women and to be targeting women's bodies and reproductive choices is not just counterproductive but you know it just seems frankly stupid to me. well what do you think too you know when somebody like foster friess big that it's a really good joke to say national television that women should just squeeze aspirin between their needs is a form of birth control. well i mean that form of birth control has never worked in the history of the world you know abstinence. society why it has never been a way that has really successfully lowered the unintended pregnancy rate you know i think the one thing he was right about is that maybe we do need a national therapy session when it comes to sex and you know rick santorum who seems to be very very interested in the details of what goes on in all of our

bedrooms maybe should be the first candidate for that kind of therapy. he definitely is a little too interested if you ask me what's going on in everyone's bedroom all right so let's talk about it let's talk about this hearing today. didn't have any women on the panel i mean at the same time we also saw the obama administration come back and make a compromise right to this entire mandate for health insurance so why do we need to have a hearing about this now. well we don't you know many religious organizations including catholic organizations catholic charities usa catholic health organizations all came out and supported the obama compromise which doesn't require religious institutions to pay for contraception but what it requires is just for insurance companies to cover contraception for women so there really isn't a religious freedom issue here anymore and i think the obama administration was pretty savvy about creating this compromise that takes that took the any religious

challenges off the table. i think what the e.c. hearings really point to is the fact that this isn't about religion it's not about religious freedom it's about a right wing hostility to women's rights and how about the fact that you know it's so male dominated we actually even saw democratic lawmakers female democratic lawmakers all decide to walk out today and i think we have a clip here from one of them. what i want to know is where are the women when i look at this panel i don't see one single woman who was gentle with her permanent. staff to get the rules mr chairman but better late than one in which the chairman we've been denied the right to have a would normally hamel right to make up our monthly inquiry. so that was you know during the hearing there and i think it's good right to think it's going to take a stand that something brought up. yeah i think it's great and i wish more

republican women were also on board every survey has shown that the only group of voters that actually opposed this obama compromise are male republicans even female republicans think that the compromise was a good thing and you know more than fifty percent of them support it so you know this very much has become unfortunately a gender issue which is right wing male republican lawmakers kind of against everybody else including against many religious people who use birth control or support birth control access but why are they still allowed to do this i just don't even understand right now we have hundreds of members of congress if even republican women are not supporting them the new kind of a delusional world they live in where they still think then that to this very small group of republican men you know to make this an issue. well i mean they live in a world where unfortunately that very small group has traditionally held a lot of power and i think what they're seeing is that that powers slowly slipping

away and that can be very very terrifying when you're used to being in control and so i think this you know increased hostility not just toward abortion but to word sex education toward birth control toward anything that allows women in a greater share of the power pie is incredibly frightening to them and i think we're seeing how that plays out now we're trying to give the same old group of middle aged white men a bigger platform and more power than they really deserve or are entitled to the i get through call a scary desperate last grasp for relevance or you know for some kind of attention but while that sounds funny to me let's talk about the legislation that's being passed in some of these states which really is. scary because it's going to affect people right it might even take women's lives for example what's going on here in iowa that they want to outright ban abortion make it a defense that's punishable by life in prison and that also includes you know if

it's about rape of it's incest or if it's about saving the mother's life i don't even understand something like this is that legal does it does it stand up legally . i mean as long as roe v wade is good law a law like this can be enforced. which makes it even more offensive because it's essentially just a waste of everyone's time you know it's a waste of the time of lawmakers in iowa you know have to vote on the stupid thing that's not ever going to be law unless roe is completely overturned you know it's offensive to iowans who have elected these people to actually get things done in their state you know it's offensive to all the journalists and bloggers you know news people that now have to cover this stupid law that isn't really going to matter at all the long run but that just really expresses hostility toward women generally. i guess lastly to have been following the fact that they chose not to extend something that they've expanded in the past when it comes to the violence against women act because senator grassley decided that including the community

made it no longer one group was being prioritized and he called them undeserving. yeah i mean there's sort of no words for that right it's i mean the fact that violence against women act is at all controversial at this point in two thousand and twelve. is shocking and the fact that you know are not being given the same consideration and you are somehow i guess being considered as. a threat or people that don't deserve the same level of protection. it really speaks a lot to the kind of values that republicans hold. hopefully they're losing this battle you know i think the rest of us realize how ridiculous that is joe thanks so much for joining us tonight. thank you. i had time for a last break then i've only come back i have tonight full time working for you and

hi guys it's time for tonight's tool time award and tonight goes to a tennessee police department for being just the latest law enforcement agency to jump on the islamophobia bandwagon see this week roughly a hundred tennessee law enforcement officials all attended a three day training course about islam and the threat of terrorism against what surprise surprise there are reports of the topics covered in that training were incredibly offensive and islamophobia now is a sound if you will or to you because it should the rather for a county police department joins the long list of law enforcement agencies across the nation that have been caught using training methods that are islamophobia and personally i'm getting a little bit of deja vu so i'm going to let the clips here tell the story. if you take a deep look into these training courses the picture isn't pretty you see poor oversight questionable accreditation practices and experts with no background in his law or counterterrorism who teach our cops to all muslims want to take over america i

think it's pretty safe to assume with members of federal law enforcement being taught that there is no such thing as a moderate muslim that's going to affect the f.b.i.'s relationship with the muslim community to f.b.i. training instructor they gave an incredibly offensive and bigoted view on muslims not only did william got there call muhammad a cult leader but he basically taught the concept that all muslims sympathize a jihad and the more religious a muslim is the bigger threat they pose to the us. yeah that's right over the last year we have spoken time and time again on this show about the outrages tactics that are used by these trainers that are instructing everyone from the f.b.i. to the n.y.p.d. and they have all been caught using trainers that are unqualified and known to make islamic statements and dangerous generalisations let's go back to tennessee in this specific case the instructor in question here is named john doe he's a retired f.b.i. agent who resigned following a sex scandal and since that scandal won a little has become the vice president.
